The Chip Shop in Norwich

August 22nd, 2024: Awful awful overpriced fish and chips, £10.00 bag of undercooked battered fish and rehashed chips from lunchtime service, really poor quality portion of fish, I definitely do not belive it was a cod fish that they served me, not cod flavour. What a shame as it used to famous for excellent fish and chips cooked and fried to perfection. Look before you buy and if the batter looks really thick on outside of fish then you can be sure it's really slimy and snotty on inside, and undercooked. Never never never will I visit this shop again.

I love the chip shop, in fact I travel past several others to go there. The chips are thick and not greasy which is a big thing for me as well as being cooked to that point where they’re soft on the inside but not outside. The batter is always well done without needing to specify, I mean who wants wet batter? Lastly, given the current state of affairs I don’t consider it to be over priced, I could probably find cheaper but you get what you pay for and here the portion size is good as is the food. Keep doing what you do guys.

Best chippy in norwich (though they don't do chicken* :)) decent portions too, slightly smaller then last I was there but still good value, be prepared to queue as it can get very busy (it really is that good) *update: they now do chicken, really really nice chicken

A very good chip shop offering tasty food for a good price. Ordering for four people in my family only came to around £18 and I think that’s a very good deal. The fish is massive and tastes really nice, the chips are made from new potatoes giving them a nice and fluffy texture which taste amazing and the batter is beautiful. Portions are big and the staff are friendly. Unfortunately they take only cash and sometimes it can be hard to find a cash point in The Golden Triangle, however, this is a very good fish and chip spot in Norwich.

Friendly staff. The fish inside the batter was ok. The batter was excessively oily. The chips weren’t fresh & were excessively oily. Hugely disappointing. Would not go there again.

A staple weekly visit for my family! Probably one of the tastiest chip shops I've visited, and VERY glad it's local to us! EDIT - Pro-tip, visit the chip shop around 630pm - 730pm, after the initial rush.

I placed a very large order. They were very helpful. Packed it into boxes and labelled everything. The order was correct and very tasty. My battered mushrooms were lovely.

Stafford Street chippie is one of the best outside of the city centre. I have had gorgeous cod and chips here several times before and I have never been disappointed.

Local chippy, immediate, friendly service, battered sausage and chips are less than a fiver. As a bonus they let you do your own salt and vinegar. Can’t ask for much more.

Had not eaten a fish and chips for a few months. This was first time in Norwich. I recommend very much. We had scampi Chios and mushy peas. Was so tasty and really well cooked. The staff were very friendly and all at a reasonable price

Was in the west of Norwich and needed a fix of chips……checked google maps and found this one……wow what a great plaice (😂) Got a large portion of chips and shared with my wife in the car parked outside. Absolutely fantastic chips and guess the fish would be as good. Now my problem is how to avoid the area since it’s got to be a return trip at least!

Have been using Stafford Street Fish and Chips for at least 7 years always been pleased with food bought but recently it has been horrendous.The chips look awful as though they have been cooked the day before also really really hard I was frightened I would break a tooth the fish batter is also very hard . I will not be visiting again. Paying £20 for something we cannot eat is unacceptable

1st visit under new owners. For me I wouldn't go back, personally the batter is way to thick, everything else was good.

Tastes like they've changed the oil recently from vegetable to beef dripping... might be worth checking before purchase if you're a vegetarian.

Great traditional chippy, with excellent portion sizes and really tasty food! The batter is always so crispy. Really big chip portions so I'd say order a size smaller than what you think you need!! My fave traditional chippy in the city. Staff are always really friendly but don't seem to sanitise hands often - handling cash and then food after. Maybe not the most covid-secure place?

Really lovely fresh cod and chips , will definitely return soon ! Friendly staff too . Probably we will cut down on chips next time as a medium portion would be more than enough for two . The cod was a very substantial portion , well done Stafford street once again !

Decent chips was working nearby, last Friday thought I’ll give it a go see what it’s like. An I would defiantly come back over to get more thank you fish was amazing

Friendly, accommodating (we like skinless), tasty and good value - nothing more to add! We have tried many chip shops in Norwich and this remains our favorite.

Best Chippy in Norwich by a mile. Everything is cooked perfectly every time. The portions are generous large really does mean large. The fish is of the highest quality and the batter is always golden and crisp as are the chips. You really would be hard pressed to find a better chippy anywhere.

We have gone to this chip shop for years, even buying from here when we moved much further away. Since the long term owner sold the business to his colleague it has deteriorated hugely. Tonight we bought a little New Year treat and it was dreadful. Everything was swimming in pools of oil like we have never experienced before. We tried to pat it all off with kitchen roll but ended up throwing most of the food in the bin. Waste of £20 and I don’t think we will ever return

Used to be the best chip shop in Norwich but we were disappointed tonight! Chips were still good but the fish was flavourless and dry. A bit too expensive. Have had better else where

The chips were okay, but for the second time in a month or so, the fish was so oil logged, like it had been in the fryer more than once.. not great for £4.50..and not much fish, just a lot of oily, greasy batter..

This chip shop is really great. Lovely staff, really well priced and their chips are always good. Do be sure to take cash, as they don't card payments. Covid safe.

Good size portions, massive piece of cod as the pic shows, even though I didn't take the photo quick enough! Fish was quite greasy in the paper and realised my ordered pickled egg wasn't there, but had already got home 😔

Lovely food. We had a fritter, 2 sausages and some chips. A medium chips are enough to feed family of 4 and they taste great. Service is fantastic and always happy in their work.

We might be biased but we think this is the best in Norwich, often long lines on the weekend but they get you through. Food is high quality, well prepared, reasonably priced and fresh. Always look forward to it and never been disappointment.

Totally chaotic tonight. Always busy but usually orderly but tonight couldn't get in the door because all people who had placed orders were congregating and unable to get into shop without a fuss. Perhaps they should stop taking orders over the phone.

Just how I like them - not overcooked or all mushy. Believe it or not I am an expert on chips and these were flaming lovely. I had to just pinch a few before the lady wrapped them up for me!

Has been taken over what a shame the chips where inedible, either yesterdays reheated or lunch times chips, dry and hollow and greasy had to through them all away. I cant see the point in saving money on re heating chips for the chance of losing customers. Won't return i'm afraid and has been my chippy for 45 years, thank the lord for Grosvenor fish bar!

Really good fish and chips. Tad pricey, but I'd rather they charged what they needed to than tried to cut costs. Do be aware portion sizes are very large.

Good God, these are great chips. Cheap too.. Staff polite and not too friendly, and smack bang in the middle of Hummus Central. Yeah!! Btw Aldi do a fantastic Moroccan Hummus for 65p; nothing wrong with that!

This used to be the standard by which all other chip shops could be measured but tonight I am saddened that despite having the same lovely staff of old ( the new owner I do not know so can't comment) the meal was inedible. The chips were ok, but the fish was too dry to eat, and the batter was like cardboard. The pineapple rings the same. I tried to phone but no reply. Sorry guys: this has never happened before in over 30 yrs I hope it was a one off glitch

not happy ,...been using stafford st for years,best chippy in norwich,never ever had bones in my fish since the chinese have taken over there are no kebabs anymore and i had bones in my fish. looking for another chippy to use.

Superb chippy !! This gem on Stafford St is just the best for miles. I do miss their kebabs .." RIP " the best kebab in Norwich.
