The best afternoon tea we've had in a very long time. The staff were very attentive to my husbands pescatarian needs and brought a couple of extras to add to the selection which was so kind of them. Lovely venue and atmosphere especially for the festive season

Quite simply the best fish finger sandwich I've ever experienced - home made from scratch, well presented with a side salad sprinkled with roasted fava beans. Coffee also excellent, staff welcoming and the food was very reasonably priced for the quality.

Visited this lovely eatery for dinner. The chef was visible behind the glass window into the kitchen which was a nice touch. The menu had a nice varied selection, of maybe 6 main dishes. Fish meat and veggie options. Our meals were delicious, the fish was moist, perfectly cooked, the Venison nicely pink. Rack of lamb was really tasty. Really great value in my opinion. A real fine.

I know I haven’t rated the food well, only because the cakes we had weren’t too nice but the staff who served us was absolutely lovely. The location is great, the place inside was beautiful and peaceful. I think it was value for money because it’s almost like I’ve paid for the experience. We haven’t tried any main meals so they could be lovely. We only went there for a cake and coffee break.

Britons Arms is Norwich’s best kept secret. Situated in Elm Hill, on the old cobbled road not far from the cathedral, awaits a warm, welcoming, quaint restaurant. I have dined there while visiting Norwich with my sister and while working away from home. Richard who runs the restaurant is always welcoming and lovely to chat with. His menu has a great variety and the food is exquisite. I always feel spoilt for choice. The puddings are to live for! and there is a nice selection of wine and spirit’s. I love the quirky building, one of the oldest buildings in Norwich, which was in the film Stardust. If you visit in the warmer months it’s nice to eat in the little secret garden which is adjacent to the church garden. The atmosphere is very relaxed and arty with a friendly rustic feel. I almost forgot to mention the home made cakes! Pop in for coffee and cake while out shopping, you won’t be disappointed. I highly recommend this wonderful gem and looking forward to my next visit.

Worse place to go for lunch. We had 3 afternoon teas and all the sandwiches were dry. A sausage roll cut into 3 pieces so a mouthful each. Cake was awful so that went to waste. My child had a cheese toastie and it came with bugs all over her salad. Took it back and asked for another 1 in which they did but made it with the wrong bread, so my child had to go without but still got charged for it. The cheese was not cheese it was plastic cheese. Very quiet and no atmosphere. Defiantly will not be going back - awful!

We come once or twice a year. Yesterday was pretty good. We felt the roast was a bit more basic perhaps than previously. Different chef maybe. Slightly undercooked parsnips. I had leeks I think, don't think my Wife had any for some reason. Didn't feel as good as last time. That said we ate it all no problem so I'm giving a four. Good choice of Mr Winters bottles or Ampersand cans I think they had. I had a stout. Decent wine list too. They were busy yesterday perhaps people getting out of the rain. The girl and lad waiting were a delight however. An amazing building. Historical. Go for coffee and cake or more substantial for lunch or dinner. See you again soon.

I was hoping for a good meal here as I had been before (which was nice) but sadly not. I had the Lamb 'stew' which wasn't a stew at all. The dumpling was flavourless and cold in the middle (I'm thinking frozen) and the Lamb was also just about tepid in the middle. The mix of different beans had what seemed like vast amounts of chutney in so that was all you could taste and made it very acidic. There was no overall decent flavours in the meal whatsoever, I had to add a fair bit of salt just to get some taste. My girlfriend had the mushroom soup, which came with a cheese toastie. The soup tasted like water with a very slight hint of mushroom and really did not taste good at all. Overall, very very disappointed! I will not be returning unless I know the chef has moved on!

I had high hopes for Sunday lunch at the Britons Arms after reading so many 5 star reviews. What a disappointment. Yes, the building is a historic one but the interior is not charming. Furniture was cheap and basic, tables were sticky. All this could be forgiven if the food was good - but it was really awful. My fish pie was watery and inedible, and I couldn't eat more than two mouthfuls. My companion's beef roast was a horrid school dinner style mess. Piled high, yes, but dreadful quality, overcooked beef and roast potatoes that looked and tasted like they'd been cooked days before. On the plus side the service was good - the younger waitress who served us was friendly and capable and apologetic when I said I didn't like my meal. In hindsight I really should have complained more forcefully and not paid - but hey, we're British and tend to shy away from complaining in restaurants! There are so many cafes and pubs in Norwich so do yourselves a favour and steer well clear of this one. Oh and there was no loo roll in either of the toilets!

Really nice food at a reasonable price, generous portions. Outside beautiful but inside lacked ambience and character. This could be amazing but just needs some music, a little interior design help and some updated furniture. It's pub food in a cafe setting so there's a part of me that's looking for a wood burner etc. It would be helpful to have a printed menu and some fresh/dried rather than plastic flowers. Facilities must be too small or old as my meal had changed when I received it. Fortunately I didn't mind. They were very rushed and slow on the Sunday. Ideal for smaller coffee cake visits. Beautiful tasting cuisine though. Just not what I asked for. The vegan pie was also more bland than described. Toilet v cold! However i did have a beautiful moment when I saw that view over Elm Hill! Loved the vibe of this ancient building and the cosy feel the owners have given it. Food was awesome too. Sadly docked a star for the temperature. Locals had told us to wear thermal layers and we thought they were joking - they weren’t unfortunately. My RIP (romantically involved person) and I visited here around 6 pm on a sunny Saturday after a couple of hours of mildly energetic rowing on the Wensum. Consequently, we were both thirsty and hungry, but what’s more in a bit of a hurry, as we had tickets to the theatre (Julius Caesar - don’t bother). We were accommodated adroitly; our request for a jug of water and a glass of excellent local wine was fulfilled promptly. The food was also served quickly and it was outstanding; the veg were cooked just right, and my companion’s fish pie was top notch; I had the chicken supreme which was very tasty, and the accompanying sauce was worthy of a eulogy by Mark Anthony. Oh and the salt and pepper pots were “suffused with whimsy”, according to our host, if not salt and pepper, but this was quickly corrected. We left satiated and impressed at the value for money on offer.

We had to return as we had such a good experience on our first visit and it was equally fantastic this time. You don't go many places where the food actually makes you smile as it tastes so good! We had the full Tasting menu and Vegetarian tasting menu and loved every minute of it. The salt cod beignet and the venison loin especially stood out for me and my wife loved the Puy lentil & mushroom cottage pie. Service was relaxed and efficient with perfect gaps between the courses and our wine complemented the food perfectly. Cocktails were great too!
