The China Rose in Doncaster

I have been coming to this restaurant for over 25 yrs and it has always had a great reputation but the last couple of times we have been everything has gone downhill, the food not sure what’s happened but the staff are new and are disappointing, really puts me off going back when spending so much money and everything is below standard.

Been going for 20 years, its really gone downhill.. Absolutely gutted this was out go 2 place.. Staff are terrible now gutted , food is now shocking Not sure whats gone off, all our go to food options we have every month the taste now different.. Must of changed the chef

Absolutely brilliant. The best Chinese restaurant for 50 miles. Fab food, cooked to perfection and menu adapted to cope with dietary needs 😋 Service excellent and a brilliant setting.

Food was amazing. We were a party of eleven and the staff were very slow at fetching drinks, and even slower at checking if you wanted another drink. All very young, and it was very busy but it's a basic thing to check if customers need drinks.

This is without any doubt, the best Chinese restaurant in Yorkshire. With a car park included, a dress code is in place, a shirt is required for gents and no shorts. Food is excellent, on top of quality and the facilities are amazing and plenty of space, don't need to be sat in less than half a meter from the other table. Service is absolutely outstanding as well , very focused and pending for any request, it is a very pleasant experience every time I come with the family. Price is according to the quality, don't expect fast food pricing for this standard and this service.

Probably the best Chinese restaurant I have ever been Too, the food was good and presentation was nice, attentive staff and a great atmosphere. The price of the food was good but the cost of a bottle of house red was shocking, the mark up to £25 for a bottle of Merlot that would be £6 in Tesco was a bit much. Our vegetarian friend enjoyed her meal, but was a bit disappointed with the lack of meat substitute. After all tofu is a staple diet of Chinese food. All in all 9 out of 10. We will dine here again.

We love the food here so we always return for this reason, service isn’t the best as it’s mainly served by school children. Would be a 5 if they improved on the service as the prices reflect a 5 star experience.

Here Saturday night for a meal, it’s a bit expensive but compared to a similar restaurant here in Nottingham, the food is on another level. Service excellent, lovely atmosphere, so yes, top marks. The only negative is the parking, for people coming from outside the area. The car park is very small and one way in and out, so, as happened to us, the car park was full, we had to reverse all the way out. It doesn’t help that at present, there are roadworks with 3 way traffic lights right outside the restaurant making finding somewhere to park even harder not knowing the area. Definitely recommend.

We visited the China Rose with friends last night, the food was delicious and service excellent. Staff are friendly and professional. I would like to ask the question however, why when booking you are told smart dress is required and text to follow reminding customers that certain items of clothing e.g shorts ,trainers and baseball caps are not acceptable. On last nights visit and previous ones many customers wore shorts , obviously well worn trainers and jeans. My point is why stipulate smart dress code but not implement it. China Rose is definitely not a Pizza Hut environment. Please stop offending the people who do make an effort to make the night a special occasion by dressing appropriately. We do not need the constant reminders.

First visit and it will not be our last. From the welcome reception and the drinks served as we looked over the menu from the comfortable sofas to the full dining experience. 5 star all the way. Highly recommended.

Upscale Cantonese restaurant with excellent very tasty food and friendly service.

My brother was blown away with the food and the friendly staff who engaged with him when they heard his American accent. Fabulous night. Thank you China Rose.

Our 1st visit here for daughter’s birthday. Beautiful venue, large and classy feel. Went to the bar for drinks 1st and sat in comfortable seating area. Ordered from there. Food was served promptly and very nice. No chips served here, sautéed potatoes instead. Starter, mains and a dessert. Free icecream for birthday girl but I thought I was told on booking that it was a free dessert. Chopsticks available on request. The only slight negatives were the dip that we asked for for the prawn crackers was chargeable and we had to ask for a second round of drinks, despite our glasses being visibly low to empty. Would recommend.

I had my birthday cellerbration here .Beautiful place welcoming staff and our food was great too. Keep it up you have something Great to offer the people who come regular and fir those who have just found you and I live in north yorkshire thanks

The food is excellent. Service this superb. It is a restaurant of high standard cuisine with an oriental ambience and flavour . Chef Jason deserves special praise for his five star food.

Always a fantastic night out at this place - never does it disappoint - starters are superb a the main courses are even better - I would have them every night if I could afford the weight!! The theme nights are always packed - not to be missed! Highly recommend this great and iconic restaurant!!

My first visit and unfortunately will be my last. We felt very rushed with the main course but had a wait for dessert. The chicken in the chicken curry didn't seem to be fully cooked and was slimy. I was very disappointed as I was led to believe this was an amazing restaurant, it is not.

First Visit, after reading some of the negative reviews I was slightly nervous about the potions/quality/price. I can honesty say the food was good quality, portion sizes about right and good value for money. The Menu/ food is more Western Chinese rather than authentic Cantonese. We had an early booking on a Wednesday evening, by the time we left the place was packed, so that says something.

Have been to China Rose many times and had wonderful meals, after recently being diagnosed with gluten issues I was delighted to see they did a gluten free take away so we ordered some for my wife's birthday and I was greated by soup that looked and tasted like they'd scooped some dish water and floating bits of veg and meat. The main meal looks like someone forgot to cook the chicken and is 90% spring onion ends with additional couple of large lumps of ginger thrown in. (Picture included) The gluten free wasnt labelled or kept separate from the rest of the food. I look forward to my time in pain as we have no idea if cross contamination has happened. For the price we paid I'd expect much than what we received.

Went for my daughters 18th birthday with the family absolutely loved it great food great service was told it was really expensive but to be honest it thought it was very reasonable and try the spare ribs they are absolutely lovely

The food was very good and cooked to perfection. I had duck in orange sauce and hubby had prawns in garlic sauce with egg fried rice, and ice cream and cheesecake and coffee afterwards. The occasion to celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary, can only afford special occasions as very expensive and exclusive but would highly recommend.

Unfortunately not a great experience, poor service, food expensive and nothing special in terms of the food, some good staff but some need further training in customer service unfortunately won't be returning

A fantastic venue and the staff cannot do enough for you. We were a group of 8 with 2 children (aged 5&6). The staff were great with both the adults and children. The table was a great size and the lazy Susan was invaluable. The food was, for the most part, fantastic. There were just 2 dishes that lacked the same flavour and were overcooked leaving tough chicken. That being said, I'll certainly be visiting again.

Food still a decent standard but overall very expensive. Waiting staff just standing chatting and not paying much attention to customers needs - not checking if drinks needed or orders taken. Very little atmosphere - travelled some distance for a disappointing evening.

In our review already now we’re near the 5 * in display 2* especially with managements disbelief of our ruined night. That’s most incorrect!!!!!!!!!’ False !!!!!!!!

After the reviews I’m still in shock, upon entering we were greeted very nice and taken to our table and all the staff were very friendly hence 5 stars on the service. We ordered half crispy duck which was ok pancakes had sat a while and had dried together so tore quite a bit but was ok We were very excited about main I was torn between three dishes and asked the waiter he said the staff like the pork one so I said go for that, my GF had crispy chicken in sweet sauce I couldn’t stomach mine it was like oil engine oil with a lump of pork no veg of any description I had to leave it, I had to eat some of my GF’s and that was over sweet sickly batter with no chicken I could taste but that I could stomach. The egg fried rice was actually boiled rice which someone had put some bits of scrabbled egg in, it had never been fried and had no taste 2cokes and £75 lol My local takeaway is ten times better and a fraction of that cost

I have been raving about going to china roses for age to my partner. Went many years ago. Silver serves. Smart shirt and trouser's shoes no trainers . Made you feel really special. So sorry for the review I’m leaving. But was very disappointed . Reception and shown to are table great . However , two blond hairs on the table, 1 in my nicely folded napkin. It was rowdy .cold , no welcoming atmosphere ,some waiter using table brunch pan before we had paid, maybe a good idea if he did that before paying guests sat down. Expensive disappointing experience won’t be going back

Fantastic party atmosphere at the 90’s event with DJ, complete with glow-sticks! The food was hot, beautifully cooked and delicious. It was served efficiently and in a timely manner. Highly recommend the events if you’re looking for a great night out.

Fabulous 90’s events evening with DJ and glow sticks too! Appealing to ages from 12-82! Wonderful party atmosphere; everyone had a great evening. Food was delicious; set menu of two courses, hot & beautifully cooked. I just love the coffee with cream afterwards too! Service was good. Venue is perfect with a little dance floor and room between tables; good job as everyone was up having a great time! Will certainly be back! I don’t know why but the ladies loos are clean, but have an awful sticky floor (was exactly the same in December) makes you feel a bit icky!

Went as a party for Chinese New Year. Have been many times for dinner and always been delighted, expected the same standards but it was not to be. Our food was delivered in dribs and drabs and by the time everything had come out for each course everything was stone cold. We were given luke warm plates which were also cold by the time the food came. The service was appalling and the quality of the food for £70 per person did not meet anyones expectations. In my opinion they tried to cater for too many people and neither the kitchen or serving staff could cope. To say we were very disappointed is an understatement and unfortunately we will not be returning.

Salt and pepper chicken and the chicken in lime sauce is worth buying. Great time great memories all thanks to Carol for helping us with the booking.

Went to china rose on Sunday which was a celebration of Chinese new year. The atmosphere was really good and had a good vibe to the evening. It’s a shame the food didn’t live upto the hype. Once seated we were given two small baskets of prawn crackers between 9 people. Starter one piece of spare rib , a pancake roll and some mince with lettuce leaves which wasn’t too bad . Main course was two small bowls of rice and three plates full of main meals ( between 9 ) no noodles , vegetables or prawn crackers. You would also think that if you have paid £70 per head that desert would be included , oh no we will charge you another 6 or 7 pound for that ! So needless to say we did not partake, Tea and coffee included but we will forget tea requires milk ,not cream. Plus point, the waiting staff etc were really good ,and the entertainment was outstanding . First time coming out of a Chinese restaurant then having to have a sandwich when home. Will not be returning, not value for money, what a disappointment!

We used to love coming here as a special treat over 25 years ago. I have to stay that really things are not as good as they used to be. Our waiter seemed very young and inexperienced and was unable to answer some of our queries. We were sat right at the back of the restaurant near the kitchen, not ideal. The gentleman who seated us was very friendly and told us a little of the history of the restaurant but it kind of petered out there. Food arrived quickly, we ordered the expensive duck pancakes. Everything was hot when it arrived but the side plates we were given were cold so the food as you tried to assemble it quickly went cold, not really enjoyable. The 2nd course was similar, arrived hot but once on cold plates was just ok. To be honest the food just wasn’t as good as it used to be, some of the flamboyance of the place was gone. No earth in the testaurant and no music so it wasn’t welcoming, not sure we will be rushing back .

I’ve been wanting to go to this place for ages and was really looking forward to forward to it. Had a table booked for 9pm. We were seated near the bar with menus and ordered our drinks at the bar. There were a few large parties also waiting. Decor/restaurant seemed very dated They took our order about 30 minutes later and soon after we went to our table. Starters arrived, chicken satay skewers, nothing special, okay. Then half a duck (they don’t do quarter?). We only had 6 pancakes that were overcooked and had a load of duck left over. Main arrived - chicken in sweet and sour sauce. It was tasty. No peppers or onions?Very small bowl of rice and noodles where you had to hunt for the bean sprouts and onions (just about found one). No one came over to ask how our meals were. We had to ask for a wet wipe at the end of our meal. When we paid at the end the waitress came over and asked if we wanted our change back? Maybe my expectations were too high. Won’t return. Thank you for the experience but a very disappointing one.

Everything tasted like a soya sauce... Texture was OK, but to be honest... Not much better than a takeaway. Worst thing for me was the staff.... No helping hand at all... Wasn't sure what I wanted so asked for a recommendation... Literally got nothing out of em... Also didn't hear one of the staff very well, so asked 4 times, could you repeat, each time I had same very quiet answer that I didn't hear anyway.... So yea.... Takeaway it is from now on🤣

Whilst it is nice to have standards and I would discourage men in tank tops and gold chains... it is however Bawtry. Most people know how to be presentable. I advise removal or dress code with exception of no caps and to not take phone calls unless good reason. The emphasis should be on conduct, maybe a sign that loud parties, crude conversations are not tolerated, this then helps give staff confidence to address the yobbish shaved side haired boys who were talking about their sexual conquests near us. Chinese food is Chinese food, its not the clean haute cuisine we've had in London, the thick illuminous glaze is still reminiscent of your local Chinese so having people dress up seems a psychological trick into thinking it's worthy of extra £££

Renowned Chinese restaurant that's been around forever serving authentic top quality food and fantastic service

we went for a meal for my husbands 64th birthday and our 37th wedding anniversary, it has been our go to restaurant over the years, this year however was an absolute disgrace. after finishing our starters and just starting our mains we had the unpleasant experience of having a table of 8 sitting over from us, the language and chosen topics of conversation from these 8 was absolutely disgusting, neither me or my husband could carry on our conversation as we could not hear each other over these low life's, neither me or my husband are prudes in anyway and fully accept that people use fowl language, but there is a time and place for it, talking about having oral sex etc is not in my book acceptable, along with the f word and many more used. we left not even halfway through finishing our meal, we did report it to the manager and he assured us he would speak to them after we left!! we paid £91.30 for 2 drinks and a starter each, not bad for an evening out, this will not be our go to restaurant anymore, gone are the days when this was a nice and respectable place to eat. we were going to book a family table for my mum's 80th in February but that will NOT be happening now, I would not recommend the China Rose as a nice place for anyone decent.

Food was really nice, is expensive for what it is however. Restaurant good for getting dressed up / having a special meal. Only downside, for me the service could be way better for the price you pay to eat here, nothing particularly bad happened, but a smile and a bit of enthusiasm from staff could go a long way, especially as most people go here for special occasions etc & are paying top price, should receive top service.

They gave our takeaway food to someone else, so it wasn't ready on time, and they missed the pancakes which went with the shredded half duck. Disappointed. Food was tasty, though.

Yesterday was my second visit to China Rose. I have to say I do not understand the hype around this place at all. The restaurant itself now looks tired, dated, and in need of a refurb. There seemed to be a surplus of staff just standing about yet the service was not attentive at all. My quid started was nice, but nothing special. My monkfish main was gloopy and tasteless. The restaurant claims to be Cantonese yet the dessert menu consisted entirely of non-Cantonese, low-quality desserts, that I imagine come in frozen. A disappointing (but not completely awful) experience; will probably never go back.

Impressive dining area; beautifully decorated and set for Christmas. Great party atmosphere and entertainment (Take That tribute). Enjoyable food, plentiful amounts. Very efficient service to very large numbers. The young men & women serving at tables are very well trained indeed, really polite and friendly & really seem to enjoy what they’re doing; refreshing!

This is a great restaurant with great service and a really nice atmosphere. Although we really enjoyed the food we were a little disappointed that most of the dishes we ordered seemed to contain chillies which weren't needed in my opinion and slightly spoiled them.

Mid week meal out with family recommend it greatly.

Unfortunately we had to cancel our booking on Friday 20th October due to the flooding of roads caused by storm Babet. We live about 40 minutes from the restaurant and at the time it was considered unwise to travel especially as our friends are in their 70s and were afraid of getting stranded. We asked if it would be ok to move our booking to Sunday 22nd October and I was told that wouldn’t be a problem but we would lose our £60 deposit. We were told that we could have a take away but as we couldn’t travel it didn’t help. Not very customer friendly and very disappointing. We first ate there 30 years ago but unfortunately we won’t be returning!

Had a family meal here last night . Total of 8 of us and all can say it’s everything was 100% perfect ! The venue , the staff and the food ! We had the best time and although we was there over 2 hours , the night flew by . We had 3 courses including duck as a middle course and every dish was cooked to perfection . The food was very plentiful with very good size portions . This is a place that we will definitely be returning .

It was a take away therefore no comments on atmosphere. We spent nearly 80 pounds and the food was inedible. It tasted as if not the usual chef did it. We ordered pancake rolls bbq spare ribs ( really awful, when they used to be the star of the food), curry chicken tasted as the whole curry powder container fell on the pot the sautéed potatoes were terrible, the egg fried rice was sticky and not loose as it normally was. Plus other dishes we ordered were low quality, greasy and tasteless. We called to complaint. A man took the call and all he said was he hoped next time the food would be better. He was not apologetic. This is not good enough. We thought the person who answered was one of the people at service, so we called again hoping to talk to a manager. A lady answered the phone. We requested to speak to the manager and it was the same man. No point to talk to someone who was not apologetic, it sounded like he was mimicking what we told him. We have never complained before but only praised the food . It was a really bad experience and the food went to the bin unfortunately. Ribs tasted like ham hoc BTW. Poor client service at taking reviews. We called to be heard but not only we wasted money, we wasted time too. It was not one dish, it was all the dishes. Definitely something is not right in the kitchen and consequently not right with management response.

Excellent service and the food selection were great. We had the set menu, and I loved every dish. Great atmosphere and great service along with great food. What more could you want.

I have always wanted to go to China Rose and finally went as a Birthday treat from my husband. After reading some of the negative reviews & it being my first time I was a bit apprehensive. On arrival we had the option of being seated at our table or at the bar - we chose table & was seated immediately with drinks ordered as well. We had complementary prawn crackers while we waited for the starter which came around 5/10 mins.later. We were asked if we wanted the mains straight away or wait a while....the food was absolutely delicious, well cooked & flavoursome. Our waiter was excellent, gave us enough time in between courses & assisted our every need. All in all, would highly recommend & will definitely be returning.

We went this Friday. And had a lovely meal all tho very salty. MSG?. Lovely service on entering. Very polite. Got sat at the table. And served by 2 young ladies who were to busy giggling. Then we ordered a bottle of wine from a young GIRL. Who had no facial expressions at all. And had about as much energy as a pregnant earwig. Half way through the meal she asked "if everything was OK". Me... Yes it Lovely thank you. Bit later. I'd finished eating and she came up stone face and asked if we'd finished. My girlfriend said "No" as she still had her knife and fork in her hands. Taken back the young GIRL said. "Oh right how long ya gonna be". I burst out laughing at the look on my girlfriends face. 🤣. I asked the young GIRL "if it was her first day". She was so happy to tell me it was her second day..

Fantastic Chinese - I've been coming here for years, sometimes I sit in and enjoy the restaurant and sometimes I order for takeaway. Yes the takeaway is a bit more expensive than your traditional takeaway but the quality of meat and ingredients is second to none. I visited last night for dinner and the food was fantastic. The service is always excellent and the attention to detail to make you feel like a VIP is always on show. I love the fact you get the choice of using chopsticks 🥢 or cutlery, I always ask for both as I like to have a go with the chopsticks 🥢 The place was very clean and tidy. The coffee ☕ and crème was yummy 😋 Thanks for bringing a bit of China to Doncaster and Bawtry. I love it here and highly recommend it. Access ♿ is good for all abilities, ramps are available and lots of seating. 🇨🇳👲❤️

We had a table booked for 10 people on Tuesday 19th September for our grandsons birthday, but unfortunately he and his girlfriend became ill with covid. We contacted the restaurant and explained the situation, and so as not to infect their staff and other customers, we asked if we could re-book for another time but were told that was not possible, and that we would lose our deposit of £100, We were not specific with the re-booking date, but we were only offered take aways as an alternative for that date. Absolutely disgusted with the attitude of the manager, when we were trying to do the responsible thing and not spread covid. Robert Cheetham

Had the chicken and cashew nut main and it resembled prison food - slimy, pallid boiled chicken and unappetising veg without seasoning or sauce. We felt it was over-priced - sides are extra and expensive. Had to ask if I could order a drink while we waited - staff were too busy standing around in little huddles. On the whole, uninspiring, poorly cooked and not worth the money. Definitely won’t be coming back.

Abismal, had takeout, had to pre pay and was told to get there at 5.30 or wouldn’t be available, had pork mince lettuce wraps, was reasonable but not as nice as had from other Chinese , the s and p squid was dry and inedible...

Was planning on visiting until I read all the reviews about dress code sounds absolutely bonkers. I've also just read no push chairs or prams.. I don't even have kids but what's next they won't allow? Disabled people? I wouldn't give money away to such a backwards business.

We wanted to try this restaurant as it was recommended by a friend. Drove nearly half an hour to get to the place from where we live but as soon as we got in we were approached by the receptionist, who was rude and abrupt. She told us that if my husband can’t change into trousers we wouldnt be admitted in. We were surprised and annoyed on how we were told we arent allowed to be in due to what my husband was wearing. Fair enough if it is stipulated in their website that their is a smart dress code then we could have prepared to dress based on the policy!!

Poor restaurant apparently have a dress code. Even though the restaurant is empty on a mid day. Very very poor when dont state website its 2023
