We ate dinner at The Chimneys while staying nearby in August 2024. We booked the restaurant on a recommendation and found it to be a generally enjoyable experience. The restaurant is well located for the M56 motorway as well as being on the main road towards Chester. There were a good range of drinks including Tarquin's Gin, which my wife had previously enjoyed in Cornwall. We had fish and chips which were all cooked well, the only disappointment was that the garlic bread starter we had was pretty tough and not really edible once it cooled down. The interior of the restaurant was very warm but I appreciate that on a busy day, there's probably not a great deal that can be done about that in an old building. Overall we had a good meal here and would return.

We called here on our way home from a morning choir recital in Liverpool Cathedral. We had been once previously, years ago, when it had been very busy. Today, it was extremely quiet, which surprised us on a Saturday. We had not booked a table but the staff were welcoming and gave us a nice window table. The menu was interesting and varied. Service was quick and our server was courteous and helpful throughout the meal. We were pleasantly surprised by the presentation and quality of the food. The flavours were imaginative and different and we were impressed that the servings were manageable and did not over-face us.

When Chimneys reopened we enjoyed meals. Last Saturday we were in for a disappointment. Our soup was served just about warm with a thick wedge of dry sour dough bread, the waitress replaced the soup with hot ones and changed the bread type which was slightly toasted on one side only. The choice of mains was limited being that this is one of the top Vintage Inns. I have never understood triple cooked chips, why would I want to eat food that had been fried thrice and reheated further! Our mains were a mismatch and just about acceptable, disappointing for the cost.

We went there for a family meal for my Birthday. Haven't been there for a long time All I can say it was one of the best meals I have had in along time I had pork belly it was so tasty and tender served with green beans spinach and mash with a really delicious gravy. Everyone of us finished the meals and two of our company ordered desserts.. when the rest of us saw them we were really envious. The average main course was around £18 to £19 really reasonable for the portion sizes and the quality of the food and the excellent service.

Stopped en route to Wales, I have eaten here before but won’t be eating here again. Staff were lovely and friendly, the restaurant is spotless and well maintained but the food was very disappointing. I ordered FORESTIÉRE Chicken breast which come with fries and green beans, they were lovely but the chips where over cooked and like rock, there was no way I could cut or bite them, the food portion was tiny and on a large plate looked lost, I did request a fresh portion of fries and the lady took my plate and replaced the fries, though this did mean I was eating alone as my sister had almost eaten her meal when mine returned. My sister ordered the 10oz steak to be cooked medium, on arrival it was clearly well cooked, she did not want to complain as I had complained about the fries, so she continued to chew the steak until she was defeated and then left half of it. The food here is not pub prices, so I would expect the food to be of a much better standard, neither of us enjoyed the meal, we felt it was a total waste of money.

We live local and thought we would give the refurbished Chimneys a try.First the refurbishment and the best bit about the pub it’s been done really well and looks really nice.we booked a Sunday afternoon around 5pm a table for 3. We were shown to our table and told someone would be back to take drinks orders, someone did come back 15 mins later a young lady who looked terrified. I don’t blame the girl but it was obvious that she had little training and zero confidence..The first thing you notice on the menu will be the prices .They are high end for what is a pub with food and higher than other vintage inns. The manager said it was because they serve a premium product. What a load of rubbish ,so there roast dinner or fish and chips that they serve at other vintage inns is rubbish.A larger £5 and the wines really over priced It feels like they want to charge you for the refurbishment. We ordered a pizza , burger and roast dinner.only the pizza and roast arrived they said they had forgotten to order the burger, so basically the burger arrived when we were finishing the other main meals. Yes mistakes happen but not at any stage did a supervisor attempt to ask if the meal was ok. The food is no better than similar chains in fact the Stamford bridge is far superior and better value. In my opinion a lot of things will need to improve for me to return.. I did call the following day to complain and they sent a £20 voucher I did tell the manager that I wasn’t after a free meal . I just wanted to have a decent meal with my family which we didn’t

We have been here a couple years ago and felt let down by the quality. With an upgrade in place we decieded to give another go for a sunday roast. Very impressed on entering, really nice decor, traditional but with a contemporary edge. The restaurant itself looked fairly busy but not packed.I have to say the staff were pleasant but the service was terrible. The waitress arrived but didnt seem trained in the slightest, she just stood there with no greeting, no wrod at all... I asked if we could order drinks and what ales they offered on tap. She mentioned she reeled off a variety lagers. I said could I please have a pint of hand pulled ale. She arrived later with little bottle of non-alcoholic ale, which was sent back.I had to get up and go to the bar look myself to find an ale. With 2 ales to choose from on tap, I told her which one I wanted and this didnt arrive for 20 minutes. We ordered our lunches, and the presentation was beautiful. But the portion size was megre, I had 3 small slice of lamb at a price of £18.50. I was so surprised the the size of this little portion, I had to ask if this was correct for the price I was paying. I was then bought a little more lamb, which was great but I really shouldn't have needed to ask.The roast potatoes seemed like pre-cooked well in advance, chalky and dry and not crispy as you would expect from a premium restaurant. Although not busy, we had an extremly long wait for the deserts. When the bill came I was charged for the bottle of non-alcholic ale that was sent back. Although this was amended upon request. To summerise: Service was extremely poor, basic training needed. Food was good in the main, small portions, pre-cooked let it down.Waiting times were a little long for drinks and desert.I don't think we will return.

We have been to Chimneys a lot over the years, but never again. Paid £13.95 for fish & chips & it was the size of a child’s meal. Most pubs fish & chips the fish is hanging of the plate not this one, the handful of chips were hidden under a very small battered fish, only one good thing the batter was lovely. Husband had cod loin & tomatoes with potatoes & half a plate full of a tomato sauce, this was £14.95. Plates sizes have definitely shrunk in size & prices are very expensive. Not worth the money, & defo not pub prices.

We had a very friendly welcome from Mike who explained the measures being taken on social distancing and showed us to our table. There were tables not being used that maintained a nice atmosphere without looking sparse. There was plenty of choice on the menu and the beef and mushroom bourguignon and the chicken and mushroom pie were both delicious and beautifully prepared and presented. Zoe looked after us very well and again was very friendly. The small pudding and coffee completed an excellent meal on our first visit to the area and coming across by chance. So pleased by the service and food and that we were able to visit without booking in advance.

The service, atmosphere, cleanliness and surroundings were great.Despite the food being really tasty, I felt that £50 for 3 green (no meat) salads and 2 pints of lager was well over the top. It was a few salad leaves, a few green beans and a couple of asparagus stalks. Nice flavour, chef made it beautifully tasty, but 11.25?!

Nice to be back here, always receive a warm welcome and are taken care of. The atmosphere is not quite the same but that’s only due to the current situation and limited seating. Good social distancing measures in place. The team have done a good job in difficult circumstances. Will be returning again soon.

Ordered their version of rib-eye steak, chips and a side salad whilst my wife had the special fish cakes. She thought they could have had a greaterproportion of lobster included. The steak whilst aceptable was not in the same class as the one I had a week earlier in Burton upon Trent. It did not help that before I had finished the steak the plate had cooled rendering the meal cold. Perhaps it was due to the plate being lukewarm on serving! Be wary of ordering Oyster Bay Sauvignion Blanc wine in a 250ml glass as it costs £8.50 (50p less than a full bottle in Sainsburys)

Went for a family meal, granted things are tough with the COVID restrictions but this was t a very good experience. If it had t been fir the 50% off I wouldn’t have gone. I was told it was a nice place to eat again oh so wrong. The food took ages to come out, had to send mine back as it was stone cold, even the mash had a glue feel to it it had been standing that long. The only thing warm was the starter of which had obviously been microwaved, how can a bowl of mushrooms be Luke warm yet I burnt my fingers on the bowl. The only saving grace was the waitress that served us in the end “Jenny”. We twice asked our original waitress for drinks and fresh cutlery and waited at least 10 minutes. I won’t be going back in a rush.

Called in on spec on a Saturday afternoon. Covid procedure explained. Staff very polite. Could only have food inside. Tables spaced out well. Paper menus given. Wife's food lovely mine not as good as usual. No atmosphere inside. We were only ones eating .The one way system with no other tables in main part takes away the soul of the place.2 meals, glass of wine and one beer, nearly £39. I came away wishing I had gone elsewhere.first time ever felt that about this place. Whatever times we live in I still want value when supporting economy.

My wife and I dropped in for a coffee and some lunch to day sat in the bar sun shinning great we were having a chat when this couple came in with 2 small dogs on long leads and decided to sit on the next table as my wife is allergic to fur I said I think we will have to move the couple said it's OK we will sit somewhere else at which point the staff gave us dirty looks as if how dare you complain which made us feel unconfortable This dog friendly thing is getting out of hand why should we have to leave an establishment because we don't like dogsDogs according to these places obviously have president over the human race and they will do anything to get business animals and food don't mix and never will We are more important than animals contry to what these owners think I don't like dogs so the alternative is to move on I was going to spend 40 quid on lunch but obviously only if I put up with dogs no thanks will give this place a miss in future so if you don't want dogs up your nose don't go thereWhat happened to health and safty animals and food seems to go down well with this pubs philosophy

Another lovely visit to The Chimneys. We visited on 25th February for a celebration lunch for my mother in laws birthday. We have been visiting the Chimneys for 15 years and once again we were not disappointed. Staff were very attentive without being intrusive (and very welcoming to our little dog). The food was delicious and I particularly recommend the lobster fish cakes! Prices were very reasonable and we had a lovely time in a nice relaxed atmosphere.

Looking forward to a special valentines night and although the staff were friendly, the restaurant was less than half full and lacked atmosphere. Our meal was underwhelming, as the menu had a high proportion of fish/seafood my wife went for the Wagyu Burger. Usually a safe bet, it was overcooked, and dare I say it burnt. We’ve eaten here on many occasion, and to be fair this was the first time we’ve left disappointed. As a valentine booking we’d paid £5/head for the booking, which wasn’t automatically deducted, although corrected immediately when questioned. Could do better....

The food was tasty enough but presentation only average. Biggest problem (this seems regular) is that staffing levels are much too low, which prevents staff giving diners the attention they deserve. Speed of service was less than expected for the reasons I believe I have already covered.

We've always passed the chimneys on the way from North Wales to Liverpool whilst on a visit, so as we had time to spare we stopped in for a quick bite for lunch. Wasn't disappointed had a lovely ham and cheese melt with chips, my mother had a lovely beef brisket sandwich with chips. She also had a creme brulee which she throughly enjoyed. Lovely, friendly staff. Will definitely be visiting again when we pass again

Hardly anyone in but out sandwiches took an age to come.. Sent one back because it had hardly any filling. Waitress indifferent and spent all the time we were there chatting to the barman and couldnt get her attention.. Second sandwich appeared after another 20 mins.. Not nice either so we left it.The lady who eventually came to apologise and bring the other sandwich was nice.. Think the other staff wouod be happier if the customers didn't disturb them while they were reading a magazine and chatting.. Unbelievable!

First off, I like The Boathouse. I like the location and I have always had good food , also the beer is good. My reason for only 3 stars is the management. The ordering system may suit them but for the customer it is awful. A queuing system where it appears there is one queue for food and another for drinks( there isn’t) . Young untrained staff whose main function is to tap the computer screen and are unable to pour drinks. If outside dining you have to join the queue to get a drink, whilst watching the solitary barman ignore the queue as he frantically sorts drinks for the inside diners who get table service . Not enough trained staff working in a poor system. Please do something about it or I will have to go elsewhere

Got to say that this is the first time we've been in the Penny Black for several years and so we decided to call in for breakfast. Table spotless, service at bar excellent, delivery of food excellent. Breakfast consisted of bacon, sausage, hash browns, egg, beans and toast. Everything was very well cooked and tasty, the egg also had a lovely soft yolk. Also added black pudding which again was perfectly cooked. Unlimited freshly ground choice of coffee's topped off a most enjoyable breakfast.
