The room was a little dated and the notices threatening fines for any damage a bit OTT given the presumed normal clientele, but I did enjoy my stay. Nice breakfast set up and pleasant staff. The coffee in the rooms was best avoided.

. Desayuno muy básico y huevos recocidos. No recomendaría alojarse aquí.

Nice traditional privately owned hotel. We stayed the night before riding the Bay Cycle Route as the location was very good. Clean rooms with a nice bed and en-suite toilet and shower, the breakfast was very good, with proper butcher made sausages and bacon. The staff were very friendly and the owner let us leave our car in the large car park for 3 days while we completed our cycling ride. I’d happily return.

Stayed here while attending a wedding a mile away. Was happy with the 4.5 stars so didn’t read reviews. I always book rooms with a 24 hour cancellation policy as having a 4 year old life can be unpredictable. Firstly our trip was almost cancelled due to myself and my husband getting Stomach flu 2 days before travelling. When I called the hotel at 9am the day before check in I was told that the cancellation fee was the full price of the hotel room (this is not what was advertised when we booked) but I had no proof as it wasn’t on our confirmation email. The receptionist was very rude and when I advised we may let our friends use the room if we didn’t attend we were also told no. A bit ridiculous considering we’d already paid, what does it matter who uses it. We decided to travel to the wedding as my husband was much better and I was on the mend. We arrived at 1pm and told our room was ready but if we wanted to check in before 2pm we had to pay £15 for early check in. We said that we didn’t need the room and would just check in after the wedding around midnight. We were then told we couldn’t do that as if we checked in after 12am we’d loose the room! So reluctantly we had to leave the wedding half way through to check in, very inconvenient and something other hotels do better. The hotel itself was very dated and smelt like a nursing home. Was definitely in need of modernisation and a good deep clean. Maybe some scented candles!! The room was again dated but the bed was comfy and clean and the shower was very modern although it stopped working 2 or 3 times while I was using it. The water just stopped for 30/40 seconds very strange. The best thing about our stay was the breakfast. Hot and plenty of choice. Our friends stayed at the Chequers hotel up the road. Was cheaper, they had a 24 hour cancellation policy and were allowed to use their room early as it was ready when they arrived at 12:30pm even though check-in wasn’t until 2pm. This place i’d revisit. I wouldn’t recommend The Chetwynde or stay here again.

Rocked up on a Tuesday night to find the bar and dining room empty. Good service, reasonable menu and fair prices. Lovely food! Returned on the Thursday just to learn that the restaurant is shut Thursday. Never mind.

This was a last minute bargain for us and it was a fantastic hotel, gorgeously decorated interior. Rooms were nice and big and had everything we needed. Casual Lounge/Bar was perfect for relaxing in at night before we dined in the Hotel Restaurant. The food was excellent, portions, quality and presentation were all outstanding. We would definitely visit here again my husband and I when in the area.

Visited with relatives. The attractive bar was very quiet but the staff were attentive, pleasant and helpful. The food, however was a different matter. I had scallops with cauliflower puree. The 2 scallops had no colour to them and the puree was tasteless and under seasoned. A very disappointing start. The sea bass was OK but came with 'chefs' salad', a bit of lettuce with a vinegary type of salsa and coleslaw, which was totally out of place. The fish would have been improved by a better caper butter sauce, which seemed to have disappeared except for the capers, and the salad omitted. The salad also appeared on one of the starters and on the pork dish which had already had creamy sauce!! The veg and re-heated potatoes were uninspiring. The goats cheese starter and pork main went down well. It's a pity the food was a let down, and perhaps why the place was so quiet, because the staff were very good and should get 5 stars alone.

First visit for a meal with a large group in late November. Able to order cocktails from the bar on arrival, which were lovely and service was good. Salmon starter was great; fresh and light. Lovely beef main course, with plenty of fresh veg and extra gravy for the table as requested. I ordered a cheeseboard for dessert and would definitely recommend! Beautifully presented and good choice of cheeses, with nice relishes and quality crackers etc to accompany. Service was good. Just one point would be that nobody offered teas/coffees at the end of the meal, which I'm sure many of the ladies would have been happy to pay extra for. Overall, good food and good value for money. Had a lovely evening.

A nice hotel run by a Barrow based couple, the food is very good with a lovely atmosphere. It mainly caters for business clients during the week therefore it can be quiet outside of this time. Weddings at weekends with the occasional funeral tea coupled with good service makes this a good place to visit.

Stayed here for a third/fourth time last week on business. Always an excellent stay and good food from staff who clearly work hard to make the visit a wonderful experience. Stayed for two nights and It was a busy on the second evening in the restaurant at the Chetwynde (this fact was advised politely by the on-duty Manageress upon arrival which was courteous and professional I thought). A man (whom was with his wife and family) in the restaurant waiting for food, was in my opinion, downright rude and agressive towards the Manageress on how long they had waited to be served. He'd had free drinks from what I could hear due to the long wait and I understand he had also walked into the kitchen and presumably gave his feelings towards the chef. The irate man was a hotelier himself apparently (he verbalised this fact to the rest of the restaurant) and in my view, he should have known better. If this is how he treats his own staff then well, words fail me. Manners cost nothing. My only regret (and after speaking to another couple next to me visitig from the Midlands too) was that I didn't get up and give the man a piece of my mind in defence of the Chetwynde Manageress - this I regret. The Manageress dealt with the whole situation impeccably and with upmost professionalism. The staff work hard at The Chetwynde, in fact, throughout the hotel industry and there are civil ways and means on dealing with displeasure. I also commend the young Manageress for dealing with the situation after and then coming to everyone in the restauarant to see if all were OK. 10/10 from me.I recommend folks to visit The Chetwynde. It's a lovely place. Quiet and well-priced. Of note: the Annex was excellent - one of the best rooms I've stayed in for a long time. Decorated tastefully and to a high quality level. Brilliant.Keep going Chetwynde. Excellent stuff! :)

Had a funeral tea there charged £800 plus extra £200 for extra sandwiches and chips. Had on menu homemade sausage rolls they were frozen party ones. Said homemade scones they were stale shop bought cheap ones . And the buffet was made up of mainly sandwiches which were very cheap to make. It was an insult what they served up at such a sad time for people. I was thinking of going there for Christmas dinner before this but will definitely not go back again.

Myself and a group of friends met and dined at Chetwynde Hotel on Saturday evening. To begin with we had cocktails in the bar/lounge area (I highly recommend the margaritas!) which on a cold November night was both warm in temperature and ambience; I could have stayed on the big comfy sofas in there all night, it was really lovely. The food in the dining room was delicious and the staff attention (as it had been in the bar) was very good - nobody went without anything and we were asked regularly if we wanted more drinks bringing to the table from the bar. In a nutshell it was a truly lovely evening and I would look forward to any future visit. Thumbs up to the Hotel in every way!

What an awful night, very poor service and even the food was not up to much. My partner & I went to Barrow to visit my in-laws we had a choice of where to go out for an evening meal because I enjoyed my last visit I suggested we go here what a mistake. We arrived at 8pm waited around 5 minutes for any member of staff to welcome us they just walked past. When we attended too we went into the lounge, we was given menus to peruse & was told I will let you settle for a couple of minutes & I pop back for your drinks order. We had fifteen minute wait & them member of staff was surprised we still had not be asked what drinks we wanted. We ordered a bottle of wine & gave her our food order as well. She came back and apologised, informed us one of the items 2 people had ordered for a starter that they only had one left, so another starter was picked. A short while after the wine arrived was told it would be on the house as they had sold out of that starter. This did redeem the wait & the problem with the starters, we was informed that a ten minute delay with our starters. The ten minutes turned into over 40 minutes by this time we had finished the bottle of wine and very hungry. I sought out a member of staff & asked how much longer as we was all getting past it I was informed our starter was just about ready. In fact it was another 5 minutes before we got them. This made it over an hour from ordering to getting served with our starters. The wait was not worth it, my father in law had nachos they had a very small amount of cheese & a tomato sauce on top which was very bland. The non-covered nachos were soggy and tasted stale. My mother in law went off menu & had prawns with a side salad which were ok. My partner has a salad dish it was a few leaves & small scattering of a few other items, it was bland. I had a potato dish it was vile, bland, not very hot I did eat it as I was so hungry, The mains came about 8 minutes after I have to say they were all very tasty & well cooked, we all enjoyed them but was it because we was so hungry? When it came to deserts in 22 years it’s the only time I have known my partner not to have one, he said if he ordered one they probably would not have one anyway & we could not tempt him. My mother in law had the crumble, not quite what she expected they crumble topping was a scattering of oats and she did say they filling was ok. My father in law had Lemon Eaton Mess which he enjoyed. I wish I had followed my partners lead, I was recommended the cheesecake, I could taste why when it came it was stale and nothing like any cheesecake I had tasted before it was vile, the worst I have ever tasted. The restaurant was around a quarter full, the staff just could not cope & the food on the whole was not worth the wait. I would recommend that you don’t use this place there are plenty of restaurants in the area and another hotel open to non-residents just across the road go there, don’t waste your time or money on the dreadful place.

We've been here a few times in the past and it wasn't very nice but now, it has new owners and our meal was absolutely delicious. Made fresh by the chef and for the amount of people in there, they agree with us. A lovely "Olde Worlde" Country pub and very friendly staff. Will visit again!
