🚇Temple 🍺 £6.70 Mahou A Charming Backstreet Boozer. Not to be confused with Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese on Fleet Street, The Cheshire Cheese is located just off The Strand in the Temple district of London. The nearest Tube is Temple. There has been a tavern on this site since the 16th century, The Cheshire Cheese was originally built in 1810. The pub was rebuilt in 1928 and is Grade II listed. The pub is split over three levels, there is a cosy Cellar Bar, a function/overflow room upstairs and the main bar on the ground floor. The decor here is everything you want to see in an old London pub. There are dark wood Georgian panels, stained glass, leaded windows, beer barrel tables and a drinking ledge. The seating is predominantly high stools, opposite the servery is a leather buttoned corner banquette. The beer selection was good and included a decent line up of craft and well known brands, there was no cask ale due to lack of demand. I decided on a pint of Mahou, my pint was excellent, price point was above average. I was kindly offered to try the Jubel Peach Lager, it was a refreshing Lager, a little sweet for me. If you’re feeling peckish there is a Bar Snack menu available with hearty Sausage Rolls, Pork Pies, Cheese and Ploughman’s Boards. I arrived around 3pm on a Wednesday afternoon in February. The main bar was fairly quiet with a few punters in attendance, upstairs was busy with a liquid lunch meeting taking place. The atmosphere was calm and relaxed with a local feel and a superb soundtrack in the background. I was invited to visit the pub and was given a guided tour by Nina the pub manager. Nina was the consummate host and was very informative telling me about this charming backstreet pub. The pub has just installed three new TV’s in the cellar bar to show live sport including the upcoming final Six Nations games. I have visited the @cheshirecheeselondon on a few occasions and have thoroughly enjoyed every visit. This is a delightful independent pub that has that unique old London pub feel. The pub is not open Sunday and Monday so plan ahead. ℹ️ Info correct on visiting 07.02.24

We went for the tasting menu that chef Robbie has moved from a Brixton pop-up to a more permanent location. Big shout out the amazing service got from Shelley as well. Each course is designed a different story, linked either to Robbie’s life, to the eighties, to South London, or to the beloved tv show Only Fools and Horses. It’s a fun experience with some really well executed dishes and the menu changes monthly. Popular with foodies, you must go and try this experience - good for a meal out with friends as I did, or for a date night.

This pub - not to be confused with "Ye Old Cheshire Cheese" on Fleet street, is off Fleet street, and as charming in it's own way. It feels as if you're on an excellent stage set in Victorian times: bowed, lead, cross hatch windows, dark wood interiors with wood beamed ceilings and it looks like it probably looked when it was built , other than 1 TV, which didn't really intrude. We only had a quick drink as we were off to the theatre but would love to go back. The prices were fine and the staff were friendly.

The friendly yet professional staff who make you feel welcome and never ran out of real ale. Usually had 4 real ale pumps all in use. Last December ran out of real ale. My recent visit - run out of real ale. So everybody has moved to the Edgar Wallace. They never run out of real ale.

Even seasoned Londoners do not know of the existence of this little wood-panelled pub, tucked away so close to the bustle of The Strand where it meets Fleet Street. I approached the pub from Temple tube station, via the oddly named Tweezer's Alley. Take a look at all the street name plates that you pass in the alley. You will notice that not all feature the apostrophe! This part of London is dominated by the many-turreted bulk of the Royal Courts of Justice, and the Inns of Court that cluster around it. Round the corner from the Cheshire Cheese there is a road with two or three busy pubs, where in the evening people from nearby barristers' chambers spill out on to the pavement, and yet the Cheshire Cheese remains relatively undiscovered. This is partly because it was closed for a while for refurbishment, and indeed the kitchen has not yet reopened. When I visited, I sensed that the bar staff did not expect a lot of customers. They had not opened up the basement or the upper two floors because it was "quiet". Stocks of drinks and snacks were low. There is a danger that this sort of attitude becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. When a pub reopens, the first people who visit are the early adopters. If they find a half-hearted offering, they won't tell their friends to come. At some point, the management just have to take a leap of faith. This pub needs big personalities to make it work. It has very good acoustics, ideal for customers with loud voices and ringing laughs. When it is empty, it is forlorn. The ground floor bar, which as I say was the only one open, is very small. There are diamond-paned windows, the light from some of which was blocked by a large TV set, showing a film about a group of retired males setting off for Las Vegas for a break. There was no sound and there were no subtitles. The music playing in the pub was really good--Kate Bush and The Beatles, for example. The volume was not too loud. The new lights that have been installed as part of the refurbishment are painful on the eyes. I moved around, trying to find somewhere to sit where they wouldn't shine in my eyes. The beer mats have polar bears on. You can look at those safely. I like the place, and hope it soon attracts more customers. I pondered afterwards the mystery of why it was fairly empty when the pubs round the corner were so busy. I wondered whether perhaps the explanation was that the Cheshire Cheese had once been a journalists' pub rather than a legal pub. At one time, the Fleet Street area was full of newspaper offices, and many of the pubs served the people who worked in them. Could it be that somehow the idea that the Cheshire Cheese was "not for us" had embedded itself in the psyche of the legal eagles who worked in the area? But it seems to me that this is a pub that could easily become very popular with visitors to London, if they found out about it. It is great to find somewhere so quiet, so close to the action. It's a secret worth knowing. I just hope that the kitchen opens soon, because it seems that until it does, Shepherd Neame may not give the pub the attention it deserves.

Met friends here for beers after work on a Friday eve. You'd expect most London pubs to be rammed on a Friday evening. This recently refurbished Shepherd Neame pub near Temple and the Aldwych was doing a decent trade, but you could still get a seat. Located down a little street off the Strand right by the Aldwych, slightly out of sight and therefore possibly missed by a lot of people, The Cheshire Cheese is a corner pub arranged over three floors. It's pretty cosy and traditional, and the refurb has done it a lot of favours - gone are the old chairs and tables and the old pub carpet, replaced with new but traditional furniture and stripped floorboards. Beers are good - I was on Sam Adams IPA and then San Miguel. Have not yet tried food, but will try next time.
