We had a voucher for a meal and booked sundsy lunch at the cheshire cat. On arrival we were given a warm greeting and shown to a table immediately. The food came quickly and was delicious. We were looked after by Sas and her team from start to finish. I would recommend the cat for service and for quality of food

Don’t go if you want a peaceful Gastro pub experience. Do go if you want rave/dance music blasting with kids running around and clientele that would ordinarily be seen in a Brewster chain. Simply terrible and it’s so sad as the building and location has great potential.

Food was dire. Gave the stars for Katie the waitress, who was very good. I really cant remember eating such a bland and tasteless dish. How does anyone get fish and chips wrong. The mushy peas had been watered down, without a doubt and there was zero flavour. The three times cooked chips were a frozen offering that hadn't been cooked through properly and the fish was horrid. My friend had the curry and she said it was bland, lacking sauce and flavour. Wont go again and wouldn't recommend. I note some of the good ratings for this place are for the rooms , read the food ones before you book, shame as lovely building in a lovely place.

Such a shame that such a nice looking restaurant was so average. The only thing that wasn’t average were the prices, top prices for very average food and service. Our first drinks arrived after the food. We ordered two roasts which for nearly £20 each were small, the broccoli was raw and inedible, the roast potatoes were tough and seemed like they had sat for a long time. The beef was inconsistent with my wife’s beautifully pink but mine was like brown leather. We received two different sized Yorkshire puddings, one small one large. Service was done but with a lack of enthusiasm and care. I would have mentioned all this but the young girl who asked if everything was ok was in the next room before she had finished the question. All in all rather dissatisfied for the price. There are many far better places to eat near Chester.

Very disappointing. Waited a very long time for our food. We were told there would be a wait due to a large group- we didnt expect to be ignored and not even offered more drinks. The vegan curry option was the chicken one, without the chicken! For the same money!!! When the food arrived the burger was cold and the wrong chips were sent. The mac and cheese was the blandest I have ever tasted, the ciabatta garlic bread was like cardboard. Portions were smaller than would expect for the price. Staff were friendly but didn't have any idea how to look after a customer. Had to track down a staff member just to pay.

We stayed one night in the Cheshire Cat en route to the car ferry. We have stayed around Chester quite a few times as a stopover on this trip and this is the best hotel to date. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Lovely location by the canal with a garden to sit out in and enjoy the weather. Room was clean and tidy although we did have to go looking for towels as none were left for us in the room. We ate in the bar that evening. The food was good and served quickly. It was not overly busy, but one annoying thing was that tables were not cleared away when guests left. Guests at the table beside ours left just was we sat down, and the table had not been cleared by the time we left. It just makes the place look scruffy. Breakfast was good, freshly cooked and good value compared to what we have been charged in other establishments we had stayed at in the area.

My husband & I have just visited The Cheshire Cat with some friends. We have visited your this pub on numerous occasions and always been very happy with the food & the service & location. However, today was totally different.. we arrived at our pre booked table at 1, placed our order at 1.10… we received our food at 2.10 !!!.. only after we had enquired as to where it was! When it did arrive, one of the meals was cold & had to replaced… 2 of the others were mediocre. The problems didn’t stop there.. we had to get someone to eventually take our plates away. We placed our pudding order.. another long wait! Finally when we asked for the card machine to pay the bill .. it didn’t arrive.. !! In the end we managed to scrape enough cash together to pay & walked out.. by now it was 3.30!! To be fair the staff were very apologetic & did knock some money off the bill . It was clear the staff were rushed off their feet & it was obvious there were not enough of them on duty to deal with the volume of customers. I think in the future we may take our custom elsewhere !such a shame. I would welcome the managements thought on this . Regards Gillian Benjamin

We had a one night stay here as we had been to the races. We had a lovely evening meal, the food was really nice. The only negative was that the place closed at 10.55pm and if we wanted another drink they said we would have to take it to our room as they were closing so we couldn't even sit in the bar. The room was very nice, very clean. Would come back, but closing early on a Saturday night was a bit disappointing.

Visited on Sunday evening after spending a very enjoyable day at Oulton Park watching the Touring Cars. We were recommended to go to the Chesire Cat by a friend who used to live in Boughton. On arrival we were told we were 10 minutes early for our booking so would have to wait for a table to become available. After being seated we were told there were no roast dinners available as they had run out, no mashed or roast potato's, no cauliflour cheese and no signature beef burgers. Given the pub actively promotes its sunday lunches and was one of the priorities for our choice of venue, it was disappointing (and poor planning on the part of the pub) to be told there were only 4 or 5 items on the menu we could only have with either chips or fries. We would have gone elsewhere but for the fact it was sunday, 8pm and we were hungry after our day out. We ordered some chicken burgers, a pie and fish and chips. The fish and chips were terrible - the batter was overdone outside, soggy under the top layer and the fish dry - it was as if it was overcooked or had been reheated and was served with rock hard peas Nobody even questioned why most of it was returned uneaten. The chicken burgers were OK but nothing special and I'm told the pie was alright as well. We didn't do puddings as the experience had put us off. The only bright spot was our waitress. Poorly organised, limited and expensive menu with poor quality food. Given the recommendation we had to book this place, we wouldn't choose to return. Sorry but a very poor customer experience.

We used to love this restaurant, it is local to us and on our dog walking route but honestly the service at managerial level that we have experienced during our last few visits have been terrible. We walked to the cat for breakfast on Sunday. Breakfast is served until 11am and we walked through the door directly to the bar at 11am. The male manager bluntly told my husband without making any eye contact we could no longer order even though food was coming out of the kitchen and it was 11.01am. My husband asked if we could then order something else to which he was barked at that the kitchen was closed, again with no empathy, smile or eye contact. What the cat is now missing is customer service and a managerial team who are prepared to go above and beyond. We would have understood that the kitchen was no longer taking orders for anything at 11am if it had been delivered in a more friendly manner. This is not the first time we have had rude encounters with the male management and its such a shame because the place used to be so lovely and friendly. On a plus note we carried on our walk and found another little cafe in the centre of christleton that we didnt know existed that was serving tea and toast so we will be going there on our Sunday walks from now on!!

Bit of a mixed bag. Starters were lovely and service was fine but really didn’t enjoy the Sunday roast. The pork was all fat and the beef was really rare, which my little girl couldn’t eat - there is ideally an option on the children’s menu. The potatoes were not great but the veg was plentiful, I imagine if you went for the main menu it would be good but I personally wouldn’t go again for a roast.

Went today for Mother’s Day brunch with bubbles. Food was very nice. Had tea/coffee with breakfast. No mention of the bubbles. Ate the breakfast which was very nice but sat for quite a while after with no sign of bubbles. Eventually my son went and asked and waited another 10 minutes until bubbles arrived. This seemed to be the case with surrounding tables who saw us but had to ask. A bit disappointing as my son booked this for a Mother’s day treat with bubbles, we would have preferred the bubbles with our breakfast or at least to be asked when we wanted it.

Good value with a tasty sea basd in the evening. Breakfast, aka brunch, was also well prepared but strangely was not a standard cooked breakfast, a la carte rather than inclusive. There was no toast & marmalade / jam on offer. It is an almost world first in our experience. The waiter on breakfast was charmless & not a good advert. The rest of the young staff were friendly but lacked a leader. Check inwas completed twice, once on line as requested, secondly at the hotel. IT seemed to be a problem. It certainly was for our evening meal. It took a good 5 minutes for staff to sort out ee had booked a table. Also, a minor point, we had to pay separately, despite staying overnight. Our room was small, but adequate for one night, though lacking an easy chairt. A complimentary bottle of water would have been a nice touch.

My wife & I dined at this very nice, warm, friendly pub & guest house. We took our 2 dogs (who'd already had their tea) as this pub is very dog friendly! We'd earlier booked a table as if you have dogs it is advisable. Upon arrival we were shown to our table - after the staff had made a huge fuss of our dogs. We were given a bigger table due to the size of one of our dogs, & they were provided with a big bowl of fresh water. We ordered our food & drinks (table service) & our meals arrived in good time - freshly cooked & hot! We decided on desserts & they arrived in good time too. All in all a very nice pleasant visit to the Cheshire Cat. I would recommend a visit.

Have reviewed this pub / restaurant before I honestly only visit as my partner and her son love the place ?! . On a positive note when the food did arrive it was hot and tasty so no complaints to the kitchen . The ambience and atmosphere was lovely no complaints here . The service however is absolutely appalling after finishing a course the plates were not cleared which therefore had a knock on effect to our next course ?! Maybe the kitchen manager could ask can you check on table blah blah starters ?! Or a waitress could check k to see whether we had finished our starters ?! After waiting 20 mins for a waitress to clear out plates our main course arrived 30 mins later , again after finishing our main course after half hour wait I had to go to the bar and ask to see the dessert menu our plates were then cleared by one of the four waitresses chatting away with what looked liked the assistant manager . After finishing our desserts yes up again after a 20 minute wait can we have the bill please . I always tip on this occasion I could not purely on principle . Come on Cheshire Cat your food was lovely your service abysmal training training o and more training and enthusiasm or you will lose your customers .

There were items that were not available so the menu didn’t really have a lot of choice. Drinks were good food was ok. I had the Turkey and the gravy was served in a very small gravy boat and looked very watered down. When the bill came we were charged for 3 deserts we didn’t have, when we told the staff they said oh I remove them. No apology. Haven’t been here for a few months won’t be rushing back. The toilets are upstairs and the staircase walls badly need decorating. It’s a long walk. Make sure you check your bill for things added on. The pub is busy in the summer as it’s by a canal and people walking by. When we went on a Sunday in December was quiet lots of empty tables

Dont normally post reviews but feel i have to regarding this visit. Arrived for a 6pm baking for 5 to celebrate a 16th birthday. Positive, the staff, despite the venues failings in kitchen management, were very good. Negatives, well where do we start, the menu, at 6pm on a Saturday evening, was decimated with items not available, no fuss and chips, no pies, no pizzas at all and we took the last Mac and Cheese, reluctantly we might add as our original choices were not available. Meal took some 50 minutes to get to our table and were just adequate in quality. It was obvious, in my humble opinion, there were "issues" with kitchen and general supplies into the kitchen. Acceptable in certain and rare circumstances but not early evening on a Saturday. Thoughts go out to those customers who followed us in to eat, their choices were diminishing by the minute. Stairs leading to toilets were grubby, walls and doors stained and marked, toilets very tired indeed, little investment needed I would venture to suggest. We ate, we paid, and we left and will not return in a hurry, if at all. Very poor experience.

Terrible experience. This place sets hospitality back to the dark ages with the staffs attitude to customers. We turned up at 7.50pm on 22nd October only to be told "We have been busy all day and can't be bothered to serve you." That is effectively what they said to us even though there were other people around studying the menu and getting ready to order. Appalling customer service and frankly, the staff don't deserve to have jobs. I understand they all want to go home early but openly expressing that customers are too much trouble only leads to disaster for a business. Hope management reads this review. Wonder how much they will care if they do? PS. And I'm not interested in any excuses re: Sunday's / Co-vid or any other nonsense. You are a restaurant purporting to serve food to customers.

3 meals were not completely available. Broccoli and cabbage were so undercooked I could have done with a chainsaw to cut them! Chicken pie was ok but mash potato was lukewarm. One gammon meal was returned as it was overcooked and inedible. Altogether disappointing experience.

Seemed understaffed throughout our visit, not sure what was going on, but our waiter Matt handled every table with ease and made our experience not just enjoyable but unforgettable. Had a good laugh and everything was clean. Food was also delicious - pizza was huge (and very reasonably priced), sea bass cooked well too. Our only regret was that we were too full for desserts. Can’t wait to return - but we do hope they sort out the staffing issue to take the pressure off!

Got to say that this is the first time we've been in the Penny Black for several years and so we decided to call in for breakfast. Table spotless, service at bar excellent, delivery of food excellent. Breakfast consisted of bacon, sausage, hash browns, egg, beans and toast. Everything was very well cooked and tasty, the egg also had a lovely soft yolk. Also added black pudding which again was perfectly cooked. Unlimited freshly ground choice of coffee's topped off a most enjoyable breakfast.
