My wife and I, recently celebrated our daughter’s 18th birthday at The Cherwell Pub, with various family members and friends. We cannot express enough how grateful we are to Landlord Joe, also - Lillie, and Sami for making the evening so very special! From the moment we arrived, they went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect for us. The atmosphere was inviting, and our daughter, family and friends had an amazing time. Joe, Lillie, and Sami were incredibly attentive, making sure that nothing was too much trouble. Their warmth and dedication truly set the tone for a memorable evening. We highly recommend The Cherwell Pub not just for a couple of drinks, but also as a fantastic venue for celebrations. Thank you all so much for the unforgettable night! Bar staff were friendly and prices not too bad but the downstairs toilet was absolutely disgusting we were in there early in the day so it definitely hadn't been cleaned and if it has they need a new cleaner! Apparently it has been recently refurbished but I couldn't see what was different apart from an awful carpet!

Currently closed but no signage in windows or anything on social media about it being closed or why it's closed

Seeing the decline of this service, staff are great, but the breakfast with a coffee £17 and was dreadful!

For once Paulicarus and Jorvic made the wrong choice. The large bar is undergoing a major refurb but clearly aims for a younger market. My Fullers London Pride was just about OK but the Pinot was awful and left undrunk / poured down the drain. Large noisy interior with TV's blasting out music?!. Picnic tables out front on the street.

Food was very poor, probably the worst dining experience I have ever had. For example, my wife ordered a chicken salad, the chicken was inedible and the salad was just some basic iceberg lettuce with some cucumber and tomatoes and she couldn't eat the lettuce because it was brown! And the salad cost about £11! Also the restaurant was very tired looking and smelled. On the plus side, the service was good, very friendly.

I come to this pub every Friday afternoon with my children and it’s always friendly staff… the manager Hannah is always chatty with us and bar staff Taz and Mal are always joking around and helping entertaining the kids. The food has always been good and service is quick. Staff are happy to change the tv channel so I can watch my cricket and sports that I like. They even split the screens so other customers can watch other sport too. An all round family friendly pub ☺️☺️☺️☺️

I am regular customer am very unhappy black guy he very unpolite , behavior not good , am feeling he want to fighting with customer, I don’t want come back there

After thirty years of using this pub I can't get over how rude one member of staff in particular is to customers. I will not be using this establishment again! If you like service with a smile & basic manners go elsewhere.

Back working in Banbury again and can't believe how much this place has deteriorated. Poor service and prices have gone through the roof, prices can change depending on when you visit!!! Deliveroo guys crashing around the place, moaning at staff. Customers are kept waiting while staff are dealing with delivery drivers. Ran into a couple of ex-locals in another pub who got fed up with the ridiculous prices. Owners are obviously struggling, the new sports bar is a lot cheaper and the service is better.

Went for lunch yesterday absolutely disgusting . Chips were anemic and freezing ,wrap was cold . Husband was missing butter of his toast. Another bloke who had steak commented his chips were anemic .

First trip to the town , found the Cherwell pub to have a quiet afternoon drink maybe some food and pool . The pub looked warm and welcoming from the outside and nicely decorated for the festive season . Unfortunately the welcome inside was non existent! After being ignored at the bar for more than a few minutes , even though we were the only people there, the bar staff eventually took our order , the gin I requested was not available and the bar staff were not at all helpful in suggesting an alternative . To top it off while pouring our drinks the bar staff took a napkin and proceeded to clean out his nostrils and pick out the contents ! Suffice to say we didn't hang around after our 1 drink and would not even contemplate returning ever again !

Very short staffed & felt sorry for the chap running round trying to do everything! But will not eat here again. Though the breakfast is cheap it was awful. My slice of bacon for want of a better discription !! Was 3 peices of the fatty cut off ends you get on a slice of bacon piled on top of each other, had less bacon on the plate than would have got with a slice of streaky , rock hard egg & cold beans to say the least. Nice cup of Tea though. Thank you

Very disappointing to be honest. Waited almost an hour for food and it wasn't even busy. Chicken and bacon salad without the bacon. Very poor unlikely to visit again and we wasn't the only people to be let down.

Simple easy food, with good service.

Basically nothing wrong with the place but the variable pricing is just plain stupid, Carling £4.90 because the fair is in town

Worst breakfast ever wouldn't recommend it

The worst breakfast me an my family have ever had it was either over cooked or not cooked at all an the member of staff behind the bar really didt want to be there at all ,if you hate your job that much leave.

Popped in for lunch today with family including 2 young children, food arrived within good time and was very enjoyable, my little and wolfed down his dinner! Garlic bread was cold but the staff were more than happy to get it replaced and did so with a smile on their face. The gentleman that looked after us (jamie) was absolutely brilliant! Very smiley, and happy to help couldn't fault him! I haven't visited this establishment in about 3 years and rarely come into town but will definitely make sure I pop in for lunch next time I'm in the town.

Prices varying, because some sort of event is on weather football, rugby, whatever, or whoever, might snow next weekend Prices will go up, and now a fair price goes up a pound ??? Apparently for extra staff (none) door staff (none) its a Saturday lunch time, licensing laws (wold really like to see that one) and extra cleaning, oh please, maybe in winter months when every all pubs need customer???, hind sight, basically how can you justify a variation of 20p to £1 a drink in minutes

Absolutely shocking place, terrible rude staff, and terrible food

Pub looked like it hadn't been cleaned in days. Tables were covered in plates and food. Food took an age to arrive and when it did it was awful. Ended up with a full refund and a stomach ache... at least spurs won. I won't be returning nor recommending to anyone...unless I hate them.

Another lovely visit this week having a trip trying places new. Was very impressed with the welcome and friendliness of the staff and how they wanted to have a chat with you. Food was really nice and we had a great time. All in all, I'll definitely come back again. Xxx

I've visited here each time I'm in banbury for food and it's lovely. Good food for a decent price. Staff are friendly amd welcoming.

Poor staffing slow food delivery time’s missing toast with both all day breakfast missing gravy with the kids meal waited 20 minutes for kids ice cream usually have no problem hopefully it’s better next time we visit if we return

The food was really good, the place looked nice, bit old but really nice. Good offers for kids eating for 1 pound, great beer selection, plenty of screens. Would come back for sure

Awful food not worth the money, staff very attentive couldn't fault them. Toilets disgusting needs a massive revamp. Would avoid for food.

I hate to do this but WTH! ☹️ Over priced, burnt, so much pepper I coughed a lot. If they spent more money on better ingredients shall we say, than the tv screens. The food maybe more palatable.

Disappointing. I have gone for breakfast before at the Cherwell, which was okay. However I paid a visit on the 10 December as a sibling was taking me for a Birthday meal. Which i regretted ordering. We ordered the chicken with a mushroom sauce, peas, and half a tomato. One meal with chips and another with a jacket potato. It was busy so we did not mind waiting half hour. However, when the meals came, they were a sight for sore eyes. The tomato was missing, on each plate. There were about half a teaspoon of peas on each plate, which were hard. The Chicken was dry and covered with a mushroom sauce with about four shrivelled up mushrooms. And both meals were cold. It looked like they had been previously microwaved. They looked like a microwave meal. I asked for a refund. And left to go eat elsewhere. I would not have cared waiting the extra time for our meals. But i cared that what we was served was such such sub standard. My 12 year old niece could have served up better food. Who is cooking in the kitchen? The manager and customer service were polite and helpful, though.

Great place, only popped in for a drink but will be back to try the food.

Today was the 2nd time in the last 4 weeks that we have been for breakfast at the Cherwell. I myself would not have returned as the last experience was cold beans, cold plate undercooked dry mushrooms that had not seen a cooking pan. My partner was starving today and wanted the nearest place for breakfast. A total bad decision. Again cold plates but the worst thing was fried eggs that had either been cooked yesterday or very early before the pub opened at 9am. The 4 fried eggs were rubber, burnt to a very dark crisp, on the bottom hard as hard boiled eggs.. I told the staff but they only said oh we will let the cooking staff now. When this place was a Weatherspoons it was spot on for all meals. We will now only go to the Exchange in Banbury for food from now on. Bullet yolks and black on the bottom is not acceptable . If you want a very unenjoyable breakfast go to the Cherwell😢 Any cook or chef should know how to cook a perfect runny egg that is required for a full English! One star was for the Americano coffee. Following contact from the manager at The Cherwell who apologised for our bad experience of breakfast on the 17th April we were invited back for a complementary meal. We returned today, 25th April and had a complementary breakfast each. I also took my older uncle for whom I paid for a vegetarian breakfast. Unfortunately we won't be retuning in the future. The sausages on the plates of both my partner and I were cremated. I had to remove the first piece of the end of the sausage from my mouth as it was so hard and crunchy due to being extremely overcooked. On cutting open the sausages it was obvious that they had been either totally overcooked or reheated a number of times. Please see the picture attached. Dissapointingly whilst the mushrooms on the two full English were cooked, the mushrooms on the vegetarian breakfast were dried out and uncooked. Again see picture attached. We will not be returning to The Cherwell. Thanks to the manageress for trying to rectify the issue we had last time but it's obvious that the standard of cooking is below par.

Every time I visit the cherwell I can be sure that I will have a good time. The atmosphere is great and the staff are very friendly. The food and drinks are top notch and the prices are great value for money.

Went to watch the football league cup final and the rugby was on at the same time waited an hour for two drinks I don’t no who thought it would be a good idea to just have three members of staff working at such a busy time, knowing there was a big match on

Had several lunches here over the past few months. Food always of good standard and reasonably priced, with a varied menu. Barstaff always friendly and welcoming. Good place for pub lunches.

Screens everywhere, seems like dozens of them, perfect for watching the football. Even if it's packed, you'll find a good spot. Watched the world cup final there, great atmosphere. Food not great though, sausages in the full English were super cheap and bouncy on the knife, couldn't eat them, and the nachos had frozen guacamole, like avocado ice cream - an interesting delicacy but not easy for sticking crisps into. Sort the food out though and an extra star would be on the way, decent boozer, should be busier

Fairly generic pub if you want that, there was quite a smell on entering and the food was lacking. Good selection of drink.

Service was poor, busiest night of the week and only one person serving, had to wait for a long time to get served, others that came in after me got served before me. My friends had a similar problem

Food very, very good, but Bar person served me with an 8% alcohol drink when asked for a NON alcoholic one. I assumed he knew his job and drank it, which made me feel a bit ***as I was taking strong painkillers with it. Thankfully I wasn't driving and got home OK on the bus..

The beer selection is good the food wasn't so good, burnt hash browns and sausages under cooked eggs, bacon and toast ok but there was a lot of people ordering so maybe just a one off. Friendly Staff polite and helpful though.

Never again....my drink is Strongbow and from £3.85 it's gone up overnight to £4.45. I know that everything has gone up but I wish I could get a 15% rise. I was also told it's because of the football World Cup! Even worse though was the food. I had a normal chicken tikka masalla but it might has well been called "spot the chicken". There was 3 small pieces of chicken in it! At least I think it was chicken. The microwave must have been broken as well because it was warm at best. This is a review of The Cherwell, Banbury where I've had many a pleasant evening over the last 9/10 years. Now though, I'll drink in The Swan or The Dog and Gun and eat in Wetherspoons or the Church House....these provide much better value.

Ordered the mixed grill. No good. Asked for well done and everything was still alive. Asked for no peas but came with peas. When I mentioned it they said well push them to one side. Definitely will not be back here 🤬

The Cherwell Banbury is one of the best Stonegate venues I have ever visited. Located in the centre of Banbury just off The High Street it's position is perfect. The bar staff and security are always friendly and polite, the bar tariff is reasonable for a town centre pub and the food is of good quality. The only criticism I have is the lack of entertainment on a weekend, eg local bands, soloist, duo's, trio's, comedians, DJ's etc.

Basic. Food pretty poor compared to how it was a year ago. Staff friendly. Lots of tvs for sport

Average breakfast , bit tasteless its a pub doing breakfasts , not overly friendly polite enough but no real interaction, on morning i eent coffee was only hot drink available.

Plenty of seating inside and outside. Varied menu and suitable for vegetarian and vegans. Good prices.

Scuffy full of Drunken Men hogging the Bar area ordered a Sticky Toffee Pudding arrived Cold eventually got it changed but without any cream as it had melted and they didn't ask if I wanted any more Toilets a disgrace

I thought I would try this place. The bar person was a bit cheeky and was more concerned with chatting with his friends/colleagues rather than to serve me. There were some locals in there play-fighting with their child. Perhaps I'm alone in thinking that a bar is not the place for children to be, but it seems to me they get bored and play-up and make a lot noise that would otherwise not be there. I would think its a good place to watch sport though.

Attracts all sorts and noisy. Good deals and the place for sports on TV though. Gone downhill since The Litten Tree days.

I can't believe the good reviews, my food was disgusting. I had a cheese baguette with jar salsa smothered all over it and lettuce that looked like it was from the bin. The chips were hard & cold. I asked for a lemonade & lime ... think they 4got the lime.. don't bother... So disappointing 😞

Love it here! Been to the Cherwell pub many times for many different occasions and never had any faults. Feels very comfortable, clean and relaxed. Always helpful with ordering food with allergies. Good choice of events and good music. Last of all the staff are always helpful and friendly.

Such a lovely place to grab food and to watch Abit of sport with multiple screens dotted around the place including booths. Food quality is say was probably 8/10 however the friendly and attentive staff made up for it an it is great quality for the money 👌

Food was bit undercooked and tables dirty. Staff were very nice. Toilets absolutely disgusting and all 12 toilets if not blocked were filthy.

Staff were rude and looked like they wanted to be there even less than I did, and I'd rather have been at a funeral. After waiting 45+ mins for mains it then took 15 mins to scoop ice cream into a bowl for the kids after asking 3 times I stood at the bar until they did it (even offered to do it myself to help out)

Great pub just needs a good clean

Unbelievably slow! This place has a reputation for being slow at serving, however we thought we would give it another chance. That was a mistake as we ended up walking out again (as did others) There was only ONE person serving behand the bar and they were not exactly fast either. The que just kept getting longer and longer and people were running out of patience waiting at the bar. We walked out after about 15 mins of waiting and went to another pub, where we had several meals and drink. That’s business that the Cherwell lost as well as any future business. If this place doesn’t make an effort to acknowledge or serve people, they will simply go somewhere else. The Cherwell is poorly managed, the staff are unprofessional and they certainly do not value their customers. Avoid this place at all costs !
