The Chequers Pub & Kitchen in Central Bedfordshire

We made an impromptu decision to eat in the pub, despite not booking, the pub were very accommodating. The kids were very well catered for and happy with their generous meal choices. My husband and I enjoyed the vegetarian burgers, which were simply delicious and very satisfying. Vicki and the team went out of their way to make my husband feel special in his birthday with a complementary cake and Prosecco :) Thank you so much, it’s wonderful to have such a gem on our doorstep which prides itself in fabulous food and exceptional service.

We came across this wonderful thatched pub, we decided to stop for some food and omg it was amazing, the staff are really friendly and helpful and very attentive. The food is amazing,I had roast pork belly which was the best I have ever had it was cooked to perfection and the crackling was spot on, I also had pigs in blankets with cauliflower cheese again utterly amazing. My friend had a sea bass which he said was one of the best he had ever had as well. I would make the 2 hour drive again just to eat here, very very impressed Would highly recommend.

Went for Valentine meal. Everything about the evening was first class, excellent meal, staff and atmosphere. Well recommended.

A lovely return to a restaurant that we had not been to in a couple of years. We moved out of the area for a short while. It was good then and it's still good today. Food was excellent Well presented Hot Fresh Tasty Service was very good. Lovely staff. Worked consistently. Well worth the money and visit. Will be returning for our next celebration.

A fantastic place for a family get-together. 14 of us pre-booked for a family meal and I can't praise The Chequers enough. A friendly team, great food and a very pleasant atmosphere. What more could you want?

Absolutely fantastic restaurant! We went here on a last minute whim and wow, we're so glad we did. The food was amazingly good, the service was great and the restaurant itself was a really nice place to sit and have a meal. If you're a vegetarian or a vegan ask for the vegan menu because that just opens up a whole new world of choice. Honestly, the vegan menu was so good, better than any other restaurant we've been to. Not cheap, not expensive but a fabulous experience. Highly recommended.

Visited with a group of friends. The food is consistently of a high standard and the service second to none. Lovely ambience and a well stocked bar, what more could you need? Will return soon.

This is based on numerous past visits, though it's been a few months since the most recent. This is probably my favourite gastro-pub in the country. Years ago, I accidentally found it when taking a break off the M1, and its location is handy for M1 drivers, but only if you know of it in the first place. The staff have always been very nice to me, treating me as a valued customer. (It being an older building with low beams and ceilings, they also tease me for being ~6'5, a friendly teasing which I love.) There are some reviews regarding slow service, which may be true at busier times, but I've never found it unreasonable. Don't expect the menu to be cheap, but at that quality the prices aren't so bad for S.E. England really. The overall ambiance is top notch. I hope they can retain their high standards. I cannot recommend this place enough, especially if you're driving near J12 of the M1.

We are new to the area and so have been visiting the local eateries and pubs. We visited in October and booked again for last week. The Chequers is head and shoulders the best place we've visited and we're looking forward to going back. The staff are friendly and attentive especially the manager in the colourful shirt. Food was excellent and big portions.

Meeting friends for a Xmas get together. Very poor bar service, everyone around us served for 15 mins while we politely waited. Not sure what the issue was. We opted to go to our table in the restaurant early. No atmosphere whatsoever. Service ok-ish. Without drinks for long periods of time. Saving grace was the food. Starters and mains all great, hot, tasty and plentiful. Desserts and cheese awful. Cold brownies and inedible cheeseboard as both had been obviously kept in fridge unto service and were stone cold. Very poor considering we've pre ordered. Also the white wine was not chilled...yuk! A very mixed bag. Weirdly the whole place was empty by 9.30pm. Distinctly lacking in festive spirit. Go elsewhere!

Came with my (gluten free) wife for their Christmas Menu. Excellent service, attentive and friendly staff and the food was excellent. No issues at all for my wife, careful checking of gluten free requirements at all parts of the menu. Really nice people, great atmosphere and will certainly come here again.

Would really recommend the chequers, westoning, great service and food, car park is a little tight if you have a larger car but plenty of spaces, believe you get what you pay for !!! And it was worth every penny 👍👍👍👍👍

Great Sunday roast and superb sticky toffee pudding!!

Brilliant service from when I booked on the phone through to the event itself. I was asked on the phone if it was for a birthday, I told them yes but not a special one. They made it special anyway (I won't spoil it for others!) The staff were very friendly, the food was great and the facilities were lovely. I'll definitely be going back.

A fantastic restaurant. They accommodated us within an hour of calling them despite being busy. The food was excellent with plenty of choice and the staff were fantastic.

We started coming to Chequers Westoning in August and have come back various times since, sometimes for a meal and sometimes for drinks. Always super friendly, very helpful, dog friendly, they even have a VID (very important dog) menu. We came last month, phoned ahead, as coming back from hospital physio, they close the kitchen at 2.30pm (and reopen later for dinner), we would only just get there by 2.30pm, there response was, don't worry we'll keep the kitchen open for you. Omg, they did and we were treated so well, over and above all expectations. Today it was just a nibble and tea, then we couldn't resist the doggie roast for Pebs. Again service was excellent, food was excellent. Staff are amazing here. The outside seating area is a must in the sunny days, but the restaurant and front dining area (which is dog friendly too) are great, a lovely setting.

A family commemoration lunch for 10 on a Saturday, which they handle very well. Food was lovely atmosphere and service good. They, did not try to move us off the table and and presented separate bills for tge varuos family groupings.

Lovely food, well presented and obviously not mass produced like some pub Sunday lunches.

Took friends here Friday for lunch for their wedding anniversary. There was a card on the table and two glasses of Prosecco a lovely surprise for them. Thank you We had a lovely meal & the service was brilliant. Another very pleasant lunch.

Great food and service and surroundings

Very friendly place, really nice food, it's great! It's a special, low cost, local event with a speaker, a mens breakfast, with great hosts. I'm going to return here to have an evening meal, I've been a few times now, being vegan it's so good to find that there is a menu, a whole A4 sheet, amazing xxx

Very disappointing experience. Arrived at lunchtime on a very hot day with a view to sitting in the garden under a parasol, but not one outside table had a parasol. Upon asking the manager if there were any parasols he replied with “no, they are on order because we’ve had a few broken”. As there are limited places to eat in this area we stayed and ordered 3 soft drinks which took almost 15 minutes to arrive. Likewise a long wait for our light lunch of just sandwiches. When they finally arrived they came without any kind of cutlery or napkin. Impossible to eat any kind of salad without cutlery, even though it was just a garnish. Very poor service all round. Won’t be going back.

My husband and I went for lunch and had the 2 course lunch set menu, which was amazing. We sat outside as the weather was so lovely but the outside cushions had not been put out. Now I'm a bit on the short side so couldn't reach the table to properly to eat my meal, but the staff were so accommodating and got me some cushions to sit on. Everything about the Chequers is great. All served with lovely smiles.

We had a last minute booking at this delightful restaurant for my Birthday. The staff and management were outstanding in their attention. Superb food and even a card and complimentary glass of bubbles and dessert. I would highly recommend this restaurant

We had a wonderful Father's Day Lunch to day 3 courses you could have had 2 but the food is so amazing we had all 3 all beautifully cooked as usual well worth a visit

Had a meal with some friends over Xmas. It was lovely. Had venison scotch egg, pork belly and sticky toffee pudding. Would definitely eat that again and recommend this pub. We ate in the restaurant. Have eaten in the pub side too. The staff are very friendly.

Overall our experience was good. There were two mistakes made with our order but rectified very quickly by the manager. Two of the servers were very young and a little immature. Flicking each other’s hair and acting silly. Hopefully they will improve with more experience. The food was of a high quality and the restaurant is very nice.

You found us a lovely table, fed us fabulous food, ( Theo couldn't believe how tasty the salad was, it was the first thing on his plate to disappear ) we were fed up, hungry and thirsty.. ...you soon changed that. We had a lovely meal, met and old friend I hadn't seen for years and had a proper giggle to boot. Theo loved his forbidden pud, he'll be forever grateful that you were on his side.. 😂 The sun came out when we finally were able to go home and we achieved all manner of things as we were smiling again and well energised . Came here for breakfast recently and found that when the food arrived it was tepid. Not very wheelchair friendly, the disabled toilet not very accessible as you have a couple of steps to navigate before getting there.

We were staying in the area over Easter Weekend with our family to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary and booked after reading a few reviews - I did mention it was our Golden Wedding Anniversary. When we arrived we were greeted by very friendly and welcoming staff. The Manager unexpectedly presented us with an Anniversary Card and two glasses of bubbles for my wife and myself. We had an excellent meal which was enjoyed by all of us. Two of our party required a vegetarian and a Gluten Free meal which they had no problem choosing from the excellent menu. The staff were so friendly and attentive and together with the excellent menu made it a very enjoyable anniversary celebration.

We had a really lovely time celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. First time we’ve been, definitely won’t be our last. Very highly recommend.

A fantastic local pub with freshly prepared food. The staff were both welcoming and helpful, they were attentive to your requests and had great local knowledge. The food was amazing, I can recommend the Chicken and Gammon pie, lush.... My wife had the penne pasta and said it was full of flavour and more than enough for a lunchtime meal. They have a good choice of beer and ales and also an interesting insight to whiskey with over 30 different varieties from around the world. I have recently discovered a Welsh whiskey, Penderyn, I think you need to add this one to your collection, smooth and light. The pub had a great beer garden too with plenty of seating,both sheltered and open. Well worth a visit.

Having eaten at many pub restaurants in the wider area, this is the best. The food is tasty and imaginative, according to friends, the steak is the best they've eaten. The atmosphere friendly & welcoming, the staff (with special mentions for Lewis & Anna!) are friendly and efficient. The owners are both professional and perfect hosts. All this and competitive prices. What more could one ask? And that's not to mention the special evenings, many to raise money for charity.

Visited for Sunday lunch having pre booked. Clear booking process with confirmation email. Plenty of parking. Nice friendly welcome and seated on nice table in stable area. Drinks order taken and arrived promptly. Very attentive staff throughout with regular checks. We all went for Roasts. All excellent, plenty of veg and unlike the trend in other pubs,they do not charge extra for veg. Puddings also excellent,in particular the Orange and ginger cheesecake was spectacular. I have visited several times and never been disappointed. Staff very well trained,lots of checks regarding allergies etc. Highly recommended

The attention to detail was amazing, the front of house staff turned a meal into a unique dining experience 😊 Helping us celebrate our daughters birthday and the extra little touches made it even more special. The food was astounding and the price did not reflect the quality, well done to the kitchen team 🙌. What I was very appreciative of was the " transparency" we were told on arrival because it was our daughters birthday and had brought a cake was there would be a charge if no desserts were purchased. Absolutely agree with this and appreciated being told prior to us sitting down. Well done Chequers team we will be returning.

Party of seven for Mother's day, staff are so friendly and only willing to assist in all your food requirements, we choose from the Mother's day set menu, two of the party choose from an excellent vegan menu. Food was very filling , with the roast beef cooked to perfection which included three large slices. For a busy lunchtime service all courses were delivered on time. Staff were prompt at clearing table . The whole experience was most enjoyable not one of our party had any complaints which is unusual when dining out. The toilets were very clean. Having dined there previously we will return in the future especially as my wife has dietary requirements and this is somewhere she can eat a proper meal and feel safe. We are very satisfied customers.

I have always enjoyed eating here, and today was my trip out for food with my family and our puppy. I am so glad The Chequers was our choice. The staff were incredible! The front of house/manager was very attentive, friendly and made us and our puppy most welcome and treated him to his first puppychino. In fact all the staff, and service team were excellent- we could not fault the service. Sadly I only scored 4 star for food as two meals were returned to the kitchen. However, the staff apologised, promptly dealt with the issue, and removed the items from our final bill. In fact, they wouldn’t allow me to include a tip when paying, and yet they totally deserved a good tip! Will definitely return with our puppy, and treat the then from their dog menu. Such a special touch! Thanks for another wonderful meal!

Lovely food good service would eat here again

From what the Manager just told me after I mentioned a constructive criticism. It seems that if you don’t book and your a walk in, you choose from a set menu at lunchtime don’t expect the same quality of food that you would get if you booked and ate from the main menu because your expectations are to high. He also mentioned staff shortages in the kitchen and a very busy 60 lunchtime covers to contend with. Is this really what customers want to hear.

First time visiting but very friendly staff welcomed us on arrival. Food was nice ranging from sandwiches to full meals. We chose to eat in the bar area rather than restaurant. Service was great, food was great and we had a nice seating area perfect for catching up with friends. Will return.

Second visit in 4 years and worth going out of our way to experience the quality of The Chequers.

Couldn’t fault anything. The food was delicious with generous portion sizes. The staff were welcoming and friendly. A family favourite and lots more visits planned for 2024!

One of our favourite restaurants, excellent food with lovely flavours, good choice, great service. The staff are fantastic and we always enjoy returning.

Went there on a Sunday and it was excellent. The staff were welcoming and kind, the food was amazing and the chocolate brownie desert was honestly the best I have experienced. Will definitely be going back!

Wonderful staff went above and beyond to serve us in a cheerful, attentive way as ten of us celebrated a family birthday. The food was lovely and we sampled many dishes on the menu including the three meat roast, sausage and mash, risotto, sea bass and pizza. Great meals at a good price and we especially liked the dog friendly snug where we felt right at home. Thank you.

Had lunch here today and it was fantastic. As I am vegan, there is usually only one or two options when I go out to eat (especially for lunch) however here, I was spoilt for choice! We were served by Matt and someone I didn't catch the name of but appeared to be a manager or supervisor. Both were incredibly friendly and helpful. Food was amazing and were good portions, too. Food and drink quite pricey but worth it!

Amazing experience ! Went Sunday 15th October with 2 friends Birthdays , they got complimentary drinks , great service , fantastic food , and desserts too and complimentary desserts too , not the cheapest but the food was out of this world and worth every penny , 10/10 : )

Ordered from the Lunchtime Menu. The food was very good and the Service was excellent as well. Lovely pub with rear parking and a nice adjacent courtyard. A biggish pub/restaurant-but very cosy eating and drinking areas. Definitely worth a visit.

Popped into this old pub for Sunday roast as we were passing through the area. We were seated next to a lovely couple. Food was of good quality, we could not eat all our roast. The puddings looked amazing. We will be back one day with friends

Haven't visited for a while and previously had a really good Sunday lunch experience. It's not the biggest car park, just for note. Attractive building and looks well maintained. It was nice to see a range of meats offered. I had roast pork. My partner had turkey and was underwhelmed. Roast potatoes not really roasted. Ordered a side of cauliflower cheese and this was a bit bland. I remembered the restaurant being a lot busier before, and it lacked a little something in atmosphere. Everyone who approached the table was polite but personal engagement was missing. Denise wanted more cranberry sauce and it was waiting to gain someone's attention rather than awareness of staff. It was a meerkat moment. A little underwhelmed and so we left to go somewhere else for desert. I would go back and try their evening menu as it looked to have had some interesting dishes, it just won't be in my favourites list.

We returned to The Chequers to celebrate a 48th wedding anniversary and received the normal friendly welcome, good service and excellently cooked steaks from the butcher opposite the restaurant. A wonderful evening thanks to the staff of the Chequers.

Sunday lunch with visiting family. A mix of ages and dietary requirements. All met without fuss. Good menu - all delicious.

Great little find, quaint cosy comfortable pub/restaurant great breakfast, eggs done to perfection just bread let it down as was boring shop sliced. Friendly service, fairly attentive reasonable prices & easy parking in their own car park. Might try Wednesday Steak night next 😊

i love the owners of the restaurant/pub because I've lived here my whole life. I am a rather fussy eater and i love the burgers 10/10 would recommend. My entire family like eating there and the food. The staff are always polite and understanding. Also good access for wheel-chair users btw. The interior and exterior is pretty and it feels cozy both inside and outside. I recommend coming here.

5* for service, setting and atmosphere but I didn't have a meal so I can't rate that - although it smelt lovely :-)

We had a great evening. The welcome was warm, the staff were attentive (but not overly), the food was fresh and good. We were there from 18:30 to 21:30 and not rushed or pushed to leave. There was no noticeable background music so we were able to talk chat (and hear) easily. A great evening

The food and service were excellent. This Gastro pub offers a variety of dishes cooked to perfection. The service was a little slow on the evening we went, as the pub gets very busy, understandably as it’s very popular. Value for money, it’s great.
