We ate here whilst staying at the hotel. It was during a Wedding Reception. We were warned ahead of time that there may be a delay in the food arriving. However we felt that there was no perceptible delay. The food we ate was delicious! The Staff were very friendly and approachable.

Staying with work but the food in the restaurant is excellent. Had the 3 course set menu which was very tasty. Thai haddock fish cake for starters, turkey roast for main and then cheese and biscuits. All very enjoyable. Second night I had beer battered haddock with chunky chips, again very nice and well presented.

I have the set menu as part of a work corporate deal but no complaints. 3 courses and the main of blade of beef was so tender and tasty, served with seasonal veg,. Nice prawn cocktail and ended with a reasonable selection of cheese and biscuits.

Eat here two nights running as on a corporate deal through work. For starters I had breaded brie the first night and broccoli and Stilton soup the second. Much preferred the brie with a balsamic glaze. For mains I had salmon then on the next day pan fried lemon and thyme chicken. Both very nice but chicken just edges it. For dessert a nice mix of cheese and biscuits but the honeycomb cheesecake was a clear winner. To be honest couldn't fault food or service. Breakfast is also very good.

Stayed at the hotel through work so eat in the restaurant. I had 3 courses and all very good. The goats cheese stater with veg was tasty and nicely presented. For mains I had a very good rump steak cooked rare as requested with chunky chips. For desert the rhubarb pannacotta was a delight. Two years since my last visit but much better now. Really enjoyed. I also had breakfast and this too was excellent.

I attended a function, the tables were so close together that the staff had to ask guests to pass food to one another (including hot plates), the food was average and the service was chaotic, they were lacking decent management. The temperature of the food was very hit and miss, even for people on the same table who had the same dish.

Saturday evening we had the misfortune to book a meal for 2.The door to the restaurant was open so we could see and hear out onto the bar the tv was showing Mrs Brown's Boys & the bar was filled from a wedding in the other room. We felt like we were left in a side room out of the way. The food when it eventually arrive was cold, unappetizing & very small, the waitress kept apologising because there was a wedding on & the chef was doing the buffet food. The table behind us sent back a cold meal & another table had a cold meal. We had stone cold steak & cheese garlic bread. I had the choc fudge cake & ice cream Which I'm sure was put on with a teaspoon but was melting by the time I got it. This ruined what was supposed to be nice evening out, we would never go back there or recommend this place.

The five of us met before going to our friends wedding the next day and had drinks in the bar before going up to the first floor restaurant. We decided on two courses and most of us chose the mackerel or duck pate and then the fillet of chicken plus side orders of vegetables. WIne: Montepulciano red and Pinot Grigio white and Becks beer and at the end americano coffees. The total bill with small tip was £150 or £30 each - very good value and excellent service.

Very beautiful building. Had a Christmas meal there with a large group of friends. Table and service was excellent as was the waiting staff. We had our own room and a personal waitress who was very attentive. The table and room were decorated wonderfully. However cant say the same for that actual meal. Traditional Christmas dinner was ok , but the beef was overcooked and hardly any vegetables! Most did not like the puddings either!!!

The restaurant has no natural light, so it is quite dark, which is not what you want on a sunny lunchtime. The staff were rushed off their feet with a private function, although the restaurant wasn't even a third full. We waited for half an hour before our starters arrived. The food was OK, the young girl who was our waitress was friendly and polite and pretty much had to deal with the restaurant on her own.

El hotel es muy elegante para como del viejo mundo y en una forma de moda. Stayed in the hotel for four weeks on bussiness. Four weeks of breakfasts consisting of eggs in every possible form. Boiled, scrambled, omlette, eggs royal, benedict, and so on, and so on. Unfortunatly, despite specializing in eggs, restaurant haven't mastered prepering them. On several occasions they were underboiled, and only spice used for omletts was salt. It's possible that they do better with dinners, but after trying several of the breakfast dishes, I didn't feel like checking that. On the bright side – staff was kind, chatty and welcoming.

A lovely restaurant with nice decor and a small menu which normally translates into very good food. Not exactly the case here. We ordered a steak and lamb dish. The steak was delicious but the peppercorn sauce (despite reviews the the contrary) was a little salty. The chips were not cooked properly, hence none were eaten. When the waiter queried this we informed him that they were underdone although my partner said it didn't matter much as he was on a diet (!) The waiter made no comment other than 'ok' and took the dish away. Not really acceptable for a £26 dish. My lamb dish, ordered as medium came out as a bit well done and instead of the dauphinoise potatoes on the menu, two rather pale roast potatoes (at least the chef had started to roast them, not sure he had finished the job!). I didn't make a fuss or comment as didn't want to ruin the night. So a rather expensive meal without the perks of well cooked food or getting what you actually ordered! Won't be returning....

My order was taken and intelligent questions were asked like "shall I bring your dressing in a small jug?" Well my partner had Scallops which were declared 'fantastic' and followed by Sea Bass which was 'Amazing'. I held a wake at the Old Palace Lodge on Friday 17th January 2014 for my son who tragically passed away. Unbeknown to the staff or management I have worked in the catering industry for 13 years so inevitably a lot of my guests were restaurateurs and hoteliers from across the country. Never before have I experienced such a perfect balance between personal and professional service. The venue is deceptively large but manages to remain warm and homely despite oozing a contemporary class. Kylie, the Operations Manager and her staff pulled out all of the stops and surpassed my expectations by providing such a seamless experience. We had a buffet for our guests which was elegantly laid out in a separate room, all of the food was great, all home made by whom are obviously true professionals. I cannot fault the Old Palace Lodge in any way, you have made my final tribute to my son a very special occasion and I will never forget what you have done for my family and I.I would like to wish your venue and staff the success that it and they deserve.Best wishes,Nic

Many years ago this place was considered pretty high end, but that cannot be said today.Went here midweek at around 2030hrs, we were the only ones there. The comments about them having only one guy running around doing everything are true, and if it wasn't for him this would be a 1* review. We both had the duck to start, it looked and tasted like a tin of cold tuna dumped on the plate, we both thought it was vile.I had the venison which was ok, but nothing too exciting, my wife had the lamb shank, you cant usually go wrong with this choice, but she said it was very fatty and tasteless. The tart for dessert she said was like no other (that wasn't a compliment) and the chocolate truffle was ok, but nothing to shout about. The wine we had was very nice though!!Being the only ones there we could here the banter from the kitchen, and overheard one kitchen staff member ask another if there were any tins of tuna left, hang on i didn't see any tuna dishes on the menu, pheraps we had them for our starters????£70 for what was a total dissapointment, bar the wine. We booked afternoon tea for four about a week in advance, this was dealt with by the event organiser who couldn't have been more helpful, When we arrived the staff were waiting for us and conducted us to the old library where a single table was prepared for us. We had expected to be in the restaurant and to have a private room was a real treat. Our party included a vegetarian and a gluten intolerant guest. The Chef had prepared separate plates of sandwiches for these two as well as a seperate stand of glutent free cakes. There was a good variety of sandwiches which were obviously freshly prepared and well presented, the cakes and sweets were varied and excellent. The service was A1 and unobtrusive, fresh tea being brought in on request. We all really ate too much, but the food was so nice we just had to clear the plates :-) A very special afternoon for us and we shall return. We do enjoy an afternoon tea when we can ~ our overall service experience here was far better then at Woburn, much quieter and personal than that at Frosts at Willington and better service and fresher food than the at the Swan in Bedford,

If you are looking for refined then this is not for you. The Bedford room is somewhat drab and to be frank needs a good clean. I was sat next to the window cill which has a few ornaments which had clearly not be dusted or washed down for some time. I appreciate that spiders can spin webs through the summer very quickly but this genuinely needs a good clean. When the room is not clean this makes me query what else is not clean! Having pre booked this tea for a girlfriends birthday I could not fault the afternoon tea itself. The sandwiches had a good amount of filling and the scones were light for me, perfect. The cake selection for someone who is dairy free was great and the service was also good. There is an excellent selection of quality teas and other drinks too. Overall I would of liked to give a very good rating for the tea itself as it was lovely but the surroundings and cleanliness really let this down and it could be so easily rectified.
