Wonderful hospitality and wonderful food!! everything was great but the chocolate mousse desert was absolutely sublime!! It was possibly the best pudding I have ever had - certainly the best I can remember - it was one of those things where you have to stop and just savour every mouthful! Silky smooth chocolate mousse with a quenelle of cointreau Chantilly cream and a fantastic chocolate crumb! Words can't do it justice you must try it !!

This is a traditional British pub off the beaten track just outside Horsham but it is worth seeking out Interesting traditional pub menu with all the usual options. Friendly staff Not cheap but not too expensive either. Only observation too many dogs. The day we were there for lunch there were five tables occupied including ours and seven dogs.

We came here for dinner and drinks with family. We are visiting from Canada do it was lovely to go to a very traditional pub. The food was excellent as was the service. We all had something different and it was all very well prepared. The local beers were very nice. We certainly recommend this delightful pub and will be back on our next trip to the UK.

We have been dining at the Chequers for many years. It used to be very good, but, sadly our most recent visits have been extremely disappointing. The menu has hardly changed since they first opened and the standard is very disappointing. Last night however, was the final straw. We sat down at our table at 7.30 and our food didn't arrive until 8.45. Quite disgraceful. We will certainly not be going again.

We are regular visitors to this pub as the food is great, reasonably priced with friendly staff. Tonight we both thoroughly enjoyed the fish and chips. Light crisp batter encasing juicy flaky cod with crispy chips and mushy peas. As always, food was delicious! Only issue this time was that we asked to see the dessert menu and having decided what we would like, we sat and waited for our order to be taken. After nearly 15 minutes of waiting we gave up and settled our bill. It wasn’t even busy, we were the only diners in the main dining area. Never mind, we shall still return, but hope for better service next time :)

Last time we ate at The Chequers Inn it seemed to have rather lost it's way and had become a little ordinary. I am pleased to say that our recent visit showed that many changes had been made and our meal was a pleasure. The concise menu offered a nice range of food without it running to pages and having too much choice. I have enjoyed meals at the Chequers for almost 5 decades and through many changes of manager and staff in all areas. Our visit coincided with an event in the much larger restaurant usually venues fail to manage the larger group and this becomes an issue across the whole dining experience. However the larger numbers and busier atmosphere did not affect service to the smaller dining room. Well done guys I know it won't have been easy. I was worried that The Chequers was in a decline but it seems to have pulled itself up and we shall be back again in future.

Booked a table in the restaurant for 7.15pm. Arrived on time and we were shown to our table and we were asked if we would like a drink. My wife asked if they had any low or non alcoholic wine. The waitress said she would enquire. 35 minutes later, we were still waiting for an answer! After attracting the attention of another young lady (there were several flitting about but they kept their heads down and avoided any eye contact) we placed an order. Eventually our drinks arrived and I told the young lady that we were still waiting for someone to take our food order! By this time, we had been waiting nearly 50 minutes.! She apologised and took our order. When the food finally came, it was very good. It was well presented, tasty and very good but the long wait and the appalling service spoilt the whole evening. Whilst I accept they were quite busy, the fact that we were virtually ignored for almost 45 minutes was quite unforgivable. Just to have been acknowledged would have helped! Even though we live quite close by, I would have to think twice about returning unless, of course, they change or train the serving staff!

Food was standard pub grub but over priced for what you get and the service was terrible. Meal felt rushed, I assume because the kitchen closes at 8:30pm to the extent that our mains were brought out while we were still eating starters. Once we had finished our mains only half the plates were cleared away despite the service staff coming over twice to offer us dessert. We declined each time and despite having empty glasses we were not offered more drinks or coffees etc. we had planned to stay longer but given the poor service etc we decided to leave early and asked our taxi to collect us early. Would not return, far better places in the area for the same cost. Such a shame as we heard great things about the place but a real disappointment.

Great food, down-to-earth pub cum no-frills restaurant in a perfect little hamlet. There's a garden and a patio at the front. The menu is not fancy, it's just good food from Fish and chips to a Sunday roast and all sorts in the middle. It's not cheap, but who's worried because you won't be disappointed. Don't go there, I don't want too many people to find it.

I really enjoyed our recent experience at The Chequers Inn. The food was good and the service was excellent. I had a very good meal, which was the South American steak and a very nice pudding which was the honeycomb ice cream. The staff were friendly and helpful. Pre pandemic we used to eat regularly at the Chequers and the food has always been excellent. An impromptu lunchtime visit proved that despite the incredibly difficult trading conditions that all pubs have faced since covid, the Chequers is still up there producing lovely food. The bar staff were friendly and welcoming and the calves liver and bacon was absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection and totally hit the spot. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Well done to all.

Delicious food, cosy atmosphere, reasonably quiet (although all tables booked/occupied). For us it was wonderful. Liver and bacon was delicious, as was the soup and the dessert. I can’t get my head around a previous comment mentioning the cost of living crisis - menu is available online with prices, have a look before you go and if you can’t afford it go elsewhere. Based on our experience I would highly recommend.

Had a nice evening here with family but was just left feeling a little disappointed after very positive reviews from friends. In general, the atmosphere was nice. The liver was good, fish and chips ok, but the vegan burgers really let the food down. £14 for a burger patty, a bit of chutney and a bun with a small side salad and no chips was a real shame as the actual (externally sourced) patty was a brilliant vegan patty! Just felt that it could have easily been so much better with the salad inside the burger, and some chips. Considering the cost of living crisis, it seemed very very stingy. The service was OK, considering the staff member was new, the lack of knowledge of what beers on tap was understandable. However, it did take about 15 minutes for staff for remove empty plates from the table after our courses despite popping their head in a number of times. Good selection of deserts, all of which we ordered (sticky toffee, Panna cotta and churros) were ok.

Our intended Wednesday lunch venue was the The Fox at Rudgwick but it has now closed so a search came up with the Chequers Inn. We were a walk-in and were well accommodated with some friendly young staff serving us two. Three real ales available so that was a good start. The small bar area was indeed quite cool despite a lovely log burner. (Suggest to the Owner that one of those fan/blower things next to the burner might distribute the heat better.) A varied menu to choose from so it was the beef carpaccio and then fish and chips for me. My partner went for the veggie burger with mash and vegetables. My carpaccio was very good (delicious tuilles) but could have been a bit more ‘a chambre’ temperature. The fish (-hake, my favourite-) and chips was indeed excellent and possibly the best I have ever had in a pub or restaurant. The bill was a bit of a surprise what with Shere Drop at £5.40 a pint and charging a bit too much extra for the mash and veg even though we had discussed options before hand. I told the Cook/Owner how good the fish and chips were and another customer agreed. We will visit again.

Visited The Chequers at Rowhook today (Bank Holiday Monday) for lunch. Weather was blustery, and quite cold. Had to eat in the garden due to Covid restrictions. And had just THE BEST experience!!Seated in large marquee area which kept us warm, out of the wind, and strangely quite cosy despite being open-ended, we were 5 adults from an 82-year-old down to 27, plus a 2-year-old; so our table represented a fair cross-section of customers! Firstly the food; between us we had roast pork, roast beef, ham egg and chips, and pan-fried calves liver. ALL were excellent. Followed by apple tart, dark chocolate and raspberry tart, and of course for one, the obligatory sticky toffee pudding; again, very very nice. Great food,as we all know only too well, can be let down by poor service; not here tho. Literally from the moment we arrived and were greeted with a warm and friendly welcome, to the moment we left, NOTHING was too much trouble. Not only did there always seem to be a member of staff on hand when you needed anything, they all served with a smile and a happy attitude. New beginnings for us all, post-Covid, but once again The Chequers has not only delivered, but it seems to have actually upped its game - well done to Cora and her team, and of course to the chef - we will be back soon! Many thanks Nick & Debs

Love Chequers and have been going there for years as it has been our favourite restaurant. However, Covid has changed the place and not in a good way! Let's face it, most of us are sensible people and understand what we need to do to keep ourselves and others safe but blimey, this restaurant has become unrecognisable! Firstly, you have to view the menu via a QR code! What's wrong with a disposable paper menu (which can be easily disposed of!) Trying to order wine was quite a painful experience without a wine list, the waitress clearly had no clue which resulted in us receiving the incorrect bottle! The head waiter was, as often, arrogant and abrasive, the tables were sticky and the service was poor. One waitress for the whole place! That said, the food was excellent but for the money, the service lets the place down. Shame. It'll be a while before we return

We have been to the Chequers a handful of times over the last couple of years and have loved it, the building and atmosphere is beautiful and is complimented by great food and good service however we were sad to be disappointed this time. When we arrived we were greeted by an older gentleman who was very rude about us being 30 minutes early for our booking as we wanted to enjoy drinks beforehand. ‘Well your table is not until 7:30 so we have to serve all the other bookings first’ This made us feel extremely unwelcome! I am unsure if they have changed their chef but the food was not quite up to the usual standard of the Chequers we were used too either. Everything seemed over cooked which made it really dry. Will give pub another chance as might have been a one off due to the difficult circumstance but sad to see what was a great venue loosing it’s high standards.

As above, we were very pleased with the food indeed, delicious. Service could have been a little faster, however the staff were pleasant and helpful but we were most surprised to see the staff weren't wearing masks as the staff in our local in Hove were, also like the aforementioned pub our details weren't taken for track and trace. Apart from that effort seemed to have been made with sanitising etc. On the whole we were pleased we had booked

Lovely pub with great atmosphere and very friendly staff, however was so disappointed with the food.I had Fish and Chips which were terrible. Very small portion , which has obviously been cut and the chips were dire, thin and looked and tasted more like oven chips. Should be chunky and fresh not frozen. Both Beer and diet coke were flat ... So disappointing . Will try again to give them second chance. If no improvement we will not return

Chequers is one of our favourite places to eat and it was lovely to be back after lockdown. Great care was taken by the staff to ensure customers were safe. The food was, as ever, excellent. We both had the fish and chips (which, despite Chequers being a country pub, is probably the best you'll ever get). For pudding, I had a chocolate and salted caramel pot, my wife had affogatto. In the many times we have previously visited, we have never eaten outside before but as it was a lovely day, we sat on the back patio area, shaded by vines. It was fantastic. A great job by a talented team getting things up and running again and, given how busy it was, many people clearly agree. We'll be back again soon.

Wow! Each course is full of flavour and perfectly cooked. A hidden gem that more people should know about. We dined from the A La Carte menu but you have the choice to dine from this or the bar menu (or mix and match) Staff were fantastic and knowledgable. Highly recommend and we will be back!

I was visiting in the area and recalled a visit to this pub some 10 years previously. I just wanted to see what had changed etc. Nothing pretentious from the outside with one wall seemingly clad in some some form of corrugated material. Inside just as I remembered. Friendly, welcoming old fashioned pub with no "gimmicks"!I just wanted a quick bite to eat and opted for the battered fish and chips as I overheard that the pies take 25 minutes to serve. I wished that I was not in a hurry when I saw the pies arrive. Seemingly of very man sized portions and from overheard comments, I believe they were much appreciated. However, on delivery my fish batter seemed to be slightly over cooked. But on tasting, it was possibly the recipe because it was delicious. Furthermore, it looked a little too short but on inspection what they had done was to apparently folded the fish to make it thicker before placing it in the batter. I might be mistaken but it was just what I wanted and the chips were very much to my liking. None of this thrice fried nonsense of chips that look like wedges of potato as thick as my thumb. The salad was a little too much and frankly I did not eat it. I will be back for a pie next time.

We enjoyed super steak ciabattas in the bar area, the sandwich was excellently cooked (pink) and served with a lovely salad and parsnip crisps (yum). Staff were attentive and really friendly, particularly in chatting with our son. We’ll definitely be back!!

We revisited this venue after moving away from the area over 30 years ago. What a change, the food was excellent and served on hot plates which is uncommon in a lot places we have eaten at recently. The staff were exceptionally friendly and we were looked after all the time we were there.

First time visiting here after looking around the area and reviews but definitely not the last absolutely hands down beats my previous favourite places Welcome friendly, also liked there was already water on tableAs for the food I’ve tried hard to nit pick and find a fault but honestly I can’t quite often I come out after a meal and say it was nice but I can do that at homeAbsolutely not this time the scallops and especially the homemade black pudding were out of this world My MIL who I was dining with had soup, boring you might think, no it was so flavoursome and don’t even get me started on the delicious breadBoth mains were equally delightful and desserts were awesome You’re gained frequent new ladies that like to lunch

Ancient pub with woodburning stove. Low lintels so watch your head. Good value menu with well prepared dishes. We had the leek and pork sausages which were excellent. The onions which came with the mash had been caramelised to perfection and tasted deliciously sweet. Sticky toffee pudding made on the premises was light and moist. My wife said that the profiteroles were the best she had tasted.Good selection of beer. This is a quintessential English pub now added to our list

We visited for dinner on Thursday night, a night early for Valentine's due to other plans on Friday, and we weren't the only ones! The pub was busy with diners but the staff ere friendly and kept up well with orders. We enjoyed starters of squid & chorizo risotto and scallops with black pudding and pea puree, accompanied by lovely warm bread and butter, then my husband loved his rump of lamb with dauphonoise potatoes and my hake on a bean and chorizo stew was excellent. Courses were just the right size and we managed to find space for desserts too - for me a tasty Apple tart drizzled with caramel sauce and my husband had profiteroles. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Not been for a year or so but will be back!

We are buying a new home near to here and went to celebrate signing our commitment paperwork. The food was excellent, they will adapt for both Vegetarian and Vegans (I am full time Veggie and also flexiVegan if that make sense). They are also dog friendly and although we didn't have our dog with us we will be definitely taking her in the future. The staff were really friendly and good fun to be around. Rare for us to find a Michelin guide gastro pub that is so accommodating. My wife and I would thoroughly recommend paying them a visit.

Having driven past this pub several times I had always wanted to try it. We booked last minute and were able to get a table for the following evening. Right from when we arrived the service was impeccable. The staff incredibly friendly and attentive throughout our visit. We arrived 40mins before our table booking to enjoy some drinks in the bar then enjoyed delicious food in the restaurant. Food quality was super very very tasty.

The Chequers Inn is a small(ish) pub tucked out of the way in the Surrey countryside. On entering it looks quite basic and a little rustic but this hides the fact that the food they serve is of the highest quality for a pub-restaurant. In fact, their food would not look out of place in many more expensive places.

We dropped in for lunch on the way home and found that The Chequers Inn had improved since our last visit. A fire going in the bar, an improved menu with lighter lunch time type offers and some reasonable beer. Not Bad. Please note that it is advisable to book a table if you intend to eat.

A great visit, great service and food of a good standard. Will be back. A great British pub serving classic dishes with a slight twist. We were welcomed by the team and at no point felt abandoned. The food was yummy and clearly cooked fresh.

I cannot begin to tell you how poor our turkey christmas meal was today. The meal was luke warm. Turkey had no flavour; roast potatoes had been previously cooked and not reheated properly; vegetables were nothing to shout home about and service was very laid back to say the least. What was meant to be a most enjoyable family meal quite honestly was a huge disappointment. I would not return to this site again even if someone paid me.

Driven passed this pub at least 30 times on way to Gatwick over the years but never stopped. Visited on Thursday 26th September at 1:30pm. Reasonable sized car park with lots of spaces. Pub has oak beams which gives it a real traditional vibe. Didn’t book a table but was able to be seated straight away. Good choice on the menu. We had ciabatta baguettes (one halumi one sausage/onion) washed down with a Prosecco and a beer. Service good and baguettes only £9 each. View out the back of the pub over the South Downs is stunning! Worth knowing that last food orders are 2pm for lunch. Would definitely return.

Free entry to explore the marvellous gardens at Leonardslee when booking the Ultimate experience. A thorough wine tasting, brilliantly conducted by 'Simba', a true credit to his profession as a sommelier. Fabulous wines and that Sabre moment when the cork is 'popped', my friend did this with such distinction. An excellent, delicious Afternoon Tea followed, nothing waste much of a problem, photo opportunity, carrot cake a welcome extra but 'Simba' created the icing on the cake. Fantastic experience.

Every time I order the quality is always consistent. Particularly recommend the cookie doughs. Why go to a sloppy chain when you can support a fantastic independent!
