Wow! I thought serious food at lunch like this had pretty much died out! Stepped through the door for a pint of Greene King IPA with a friend and decided to stay for lunch. Interior is clean and simple with an extensive well-lit dining room but I preferred to take a table in the bar. On Thursday lunchtime, it's unlikely to be packed but even so a couple of tables of appreciative regulars were in place. The service is impeccable, helpful and knowledgeable. Rarely use the term 'gastro pub' but if that's a place that turns out great food and can keep beer well, then, this is it. I did linger over the wine list but was driving so couldn't be tempted to even a decent fino sherry to start or a glass of the excellent Hungarian dry tokai or a bottle from the impressive list on clarets. The evident quality of the produce and the fact that local suppliers for beef, game and poultry inter alia, get star billing is a major tick of approval in my book. Enough of me blathering. After an amuse-bouche of pumpkin soup topped with a spiced oil which really hit the spot, my starter of confit pork belly - caramelised underneath with a layer of crispy crackling on top - with herbs, microgreens, apple and vibrant dashi stock was one of the best starters I've had in a very long time. My guest's spiced chicken was similarly impressive and kept this curry fanatic very happy with it's nod to the enduringly popular chicken tikka masala. Sadly, it was a quick lunch or we would have tried the prawn cocktail in savoury cornet and the venison dish from the snacks list as well. I have to admit lasagna rarely sets my pulse rating on a menu. I'm pleased that the unusual combination of pine nuts, aubergine and sage 'reeled me' in but was still not prepared for the rich, highly flavoured stack with which I was presented. A momentary doubt that it might be a bit dry was immediately corrected by the addition, at table, of a fabulous cheese sauce closely followed by another which resembled more a pesto than a sauce. These together with deep fried sage leaves completed what amounted to a substantial dish. The control of ingredients and exact techniques of this kitchen were also on show with lamb main course chosen by my guest. Can't say much more because my concentration was taken up with my lasagna! Would have loved to have tried either the cheeses or one of the magnificent puddings on offer but time did not allow. I ear-wigged from a conversation with the manager on another table that the kitchen here has five chefs at lunch on a week day; seven in the evening! That's an investment in quality and technique that one is rarely confronted by nowadays when you call in a for a casual lunch. Great food, great pub setting, wonderful service. The two or three course lunch menu also represents great value in these uncertain times. I shall be back!

This is by far the best restaurant in the whole county if not the UK. It’s tucked away in the village and is so unassuming from the outside. But once you step inside you are in the home of amazing food. The Chequers is a place for foodies and customers that want a culinary experience. I have enjoyed the friendly staff and the excellent food for many years when I lived locally. I now live in Canada but on every visit to the UK this one of my must places to dine in. If you’re reading this and is deciding if to book. Don’t hesitate to join Ranka and her professional team for a meal that you will relish. Book and enjoy eating at The Chequers.

Amazing Friday launch. Nice new menu, good balance of vegetables and fish for you if aren't a meat person. We really loved the wine and the prosecco we started our meal was great. We finished with desserts that were amazing and have something very refreshing like a sorbet, not sure what was the name of it in the menu)) The team is friendly and knowledgable, any single question about the ingredients for a dish story were covered immediately. Space and around: cozy zones in the restaurants, each of them a bit separated from another -so during the launch you will find enough space and neighboring tables won't bother you. Nice parking area. The outside space if the weather is good is also available.

The Chequers is in the heart of a very attractive village. The prices are high end but, we felt, worth it for the standard of food and service. We chose from the set lunch menu but they were happy to adapt it for my dietary needs (I am diabetic and allergic to shell fish) We had Fillet of cod with charred cucumber oil, cauliflower, scallop butter sauce. I was a bit worried about the scallop sauce but they said no worries, they would leave out the scallop for me. It was still delicious. My partner had the scallop sauce and pronounced it very good. I was concerned about the desserts as they all seemed to be full of sugar and carbohydrate (not ideal for a diabetic) However I asked if I could have plain ice cream which they brought with a topping of fresh strawberries and other berries. My partner chose Strawberry and custard ‘trifle’, long pepper meringue, strawberry ripple ice cream. It looked (and tasted, he said) wonderful. For anyone wanting somewhere special to go for lunch or dinner, and prepared to pay higher price than most pub-restaurants, I can certainly reccommend the Chequers

We visited The Chequers Inn for my birthday and enjoyed the experience immensely. The menu was excellent, with a good range of dishes - simple food in reality but excellently delivered at a reasonable price. We had the salmon and the pea soup starters which were wonderful, the roast beef main which was superb (the beef melted in your mouth) although it could have done with a little more vegetable, and the chocolate mousse and Madeline, along with an aperol granita pre-dessert and bread. Probably the only criticism of the food wasn't that there wasnt more because it was so nice! The staff were lovely and friendly, and provided me with a card and small selection of chocolates as I had mentioned it was my birthday when booking - a lovely, thoughtful touch. Definitely worth visiting

Went for dinner as a group of four, all having the tasting menu. The food was exceptional, and the chef was able to adjust for a "No Fish" person, changing dishes to fantastic alternatives without any pre-warning. Service is always important at tasting menus and the wait staff were knowledgeable, friendly and enhanced the experience. Whilst we didn't opt for the wine flight, i must recommend trying the Hungarian white wine on the menu. Seemingly exclusive to them as the owner purchased a large amount of this wine direct. Price wise, I would put this on-par for the experience. Expect to spend £100/person for the tasting menu, and I feel this is completely validated by the experience. Would recommend and would return.

The tart tatin was most unusual but never less tasty . Service was efficient and friendly. A bottle of Bechereau Pomerol helped the lunch go in a flash. Well done the kitchen and the team

We had dinner here during our short visit to Aylesbury - mainly prompted by the great reviews - and it certainly didn't disappoint in any way. As others have said, the team have the balance just right in terms of a genuinely warm welcome, background music that was eclectic and discreet enough to mask other guests' conversations, great food served attractively at a table dressed in crisp white linen - in fact the whole restaurant was a tasteful blend of new and old. We had good advice about the dishes ad serving sizes and accompaniments (we had eaten a large lunch so didn't want to over order!). Each dish was delicious. The scallops (small plate) served as my main course and it was amazing - as was the cheese and chive mash that accompanied it. I would definitely return if we are ever in the area.

I’ve been fortunate enough to eat at this establishment a number of times over the years. I’ve not quite been able to put my finger on what makes it special apart from the obvious, delicious food and consistency of an excellent quality unrivalled in the local area, indeed you’d have to travel some distance to enjoy comparable food. It really is excellent. So what do I think really sets this place apart? It’s the people, the team. Clichéd sentiment perhaps. But I don’t say it lightly. It’s worth booking a table at different times and days. Subtle differences to be enjoyed. I know this review may sound over the top but as a keen cook and lover of fine food I can’t help but gush at the achievement Dritan and Ranka have created in The Cheques Inn.

Despite high expectations , very good service and a lovely environment this gastro pub is trying too hard . In our experiences terms it ranks as a blob and smear restaurant with elaborate descriptions of the food not borns out by the reality on the plate . A shepherds pie starter was two mouthfuls served on a high plate , belly of pork was two pieces ( well cooked and well flavoured ) with little meaningful accompaniment , a treacle tart was delicious but minuscule for such a cheap dish . It all added up to an experience that left wanting .Prices also are at the high end especially wine like a modest NZ sauvignon at £53 . There is better elsewhere .

Visited here a few times and it’s gradually got worse. The last visit we were made to feel very unwelcome. The food standard of the tasting menu was very underwhelming. The worst tasting menu I’ve had by far. Just small portions of pub grub. The...

We visited The Chequers for a birthday meal, and enjoyed superb food and service as always. The complementary gift of home-made chocolates was absolutely divine. Already looking forward to our next visit.

Have been a customer for many years and for very good reason - Ranki, Dritan, Jamie, Kristo and team never disappoint and definitely delivered on my (big) Hawaii birthday. Hostly as ever and food is next level. Coronation Cauliflower and Hafod Cheddar scotch egg was...

We arrived to find we were the 2nd couple who had booked for the whole evening. So why were we sat at the next table? Initially no music so we were whispering. Eventually music was put on. There was just no atmosphere at all. The...

This gastro pub is truly, truly wonderful. The food is incredible and more like a top end restaurant than a pub. The wine is delicious and they have a great range. Finally the staff cannot do enough for you. We have been here many times...

Went in on the off chance of getting lunch on a busy Easter Sunday. Visit regularly as in same village as we live in. Always an interesting menu and very good food. Staff friendly and knowledgable about meals and drinks. Highly recommended.

A mini escape to France (où peut-être la Belgique?) on a chilly winter's evening in the UK. Frédéric's beautiful restaurant had a log fire burning in the snug / bar to welcome us in, and he was a delightful and entertaining host. Delicious, authentic food and wine in a cosy dining room with just a few candle-lit tables. We were served a whole loaf of freshly-baked bread with butter to the table but still managed to clean our plates. Such a treat and thank you for your hospitality.
