The Chequers Brasserie in West Oxfordshire

We went here for a Sunday Lunch with 10 of us. The food was really tasty and visually appealing. I opted for the small plate which was plentiful and topped off with a large perfectly cooked Yorkshire pudding. I particularly liked that vegetables weren't what you would normally get, the addition of red cabbage was a great touch. The pub is also very dog friendly and they even do a doggy roast. We travelled from Bicester, Oxford and Witney to meet up and I would definitely make the journey again based on the food we had.

Friendly staff and delicious food. Lovely open fire and a range of cocktails as well as real ales, colouring for the children and a cheery atmosphere. The chef, Liam, went above expectations by making a special vegetarian option even with a brilliant varied menu. . We have now been back for the best Sunday roast in Witney. (We’ve tried them all) we will be back.

Corn Street is often missed by visitors to the town which is a shame as it has a good variety of eateries, pubs and delicatessens . We had wonderful lunch at Chequers yesterday and were well looked after by the two Liams. They offer a variety of tasty dishes at a reasonable price and the food is all freshly cooked. Apparently there are no microwaves in the kitchen! They are starting a Tapas evening on a Thursday soon so we intend to go back to try that out. It’s well worth a visit.

Popped in here for a stop off. So glad we did. Met Liam who was a great host and looked after us as we had our bikes outside. Intention was just to have a pint but we were enjoying it so much we had a couple and also sampled a bowl of cauliflower cheese which was delicious. Will certainly be back to try the roast dinner if that was anything to go by! Thank you Liam, we will definitely be returning.

The Chequers has recently changed ownership. Don't miss an opportunity to eat here. We visited last night with 2 other couples. Steaks, burgers and belly pork was ordered. All of the comments were great. I had belly pork and and have to say it was one of the best meals ever. Evidently the burgers were excellent as was the steak. The wine was reasonably priced at £17.50 per bottle. The staff were excellent-friendly yet professional. The chef who won Masterchef Creme de la creme visited our table and even offered to buy us a drink. Support this local establishment otherwise like so many businesses in Witney we will lose it.

The brassiere is right on my doorstep and I can guarantee the next time I fancy a Sunday lunch I won’t be going any further. The food was beautifully cooked and presented. Great value for the price and the staff couldn’t do enough for you. I’ll definitely go back to try out the French cuisine on offer another time. We need to support these little independent restaurants, it should be far busier than it was. Try it, you won’t be disappointed.

Just don’t go there - Absolutely appalling - having been pressured to arrive within 5 minutes of the booking time we arrive to find the place almost deserted! We left after the main course arrived- coq au vin swimming in clear liquid and a sour tasting steak - even the waiting staff were embarrassed!

Had a lovely 3 course meal, served by a delightful waiter. However we were bitterly disappointed with a table of 4 people who disturbed our meal complaining about their food, not sure what there was to complain about. No fault with our food, cooked to perfection. Will be returning

The food makes such a welcome change from the gastropub/pizza/burger fare available elsewhere locally. The chef's special (chicken ballotine) was full of flavour and very refined ‐ a real treat. The desserts are delicious too and not overly sweet. I'm looking forward to going back soon.

Fabulous food. Highly recommended. If you’ve ever wanted somewhere to go, that serves amazingly authentic, tasty, perfectly seasoned French food. This is it!!! I started with a perfectly light chicken liver parfait, topped with a citrus gel, and served with a yeast butter (wonderful), and pear. The vehicle for this wonderful flavour combination was a brioche bun. It was just a really perfect starter. My husband had Camembert with sweet onion jam. But again, this was really well balanced. The breadcrumb outer layer was light, and the onion jam had enough sharpness to perfectly balance the creamy Camembert. Mains were perfection. I had Toulouse sausages with puy lentils, smoked bacon, tomatoes, and button mushrooms. One word: DELICIOUS!!! My husband had Coq au vin. So so tasty, served with a really clever addition of fennel flavoured rustic bread. All so perfectly seasoned. And to go with the fabulous food, we took the recommendation for the wine, which was also delicious. Dessert was rum baba with chantilly cream for me. I was already full, but managed to squeeze this into my dessert stomach. Salted caramel pot for my husband, which was too much to finish. Would probably work well between 2. The waiting staff were fabulous too. Miss Griffith was lovely. We’ll definitely be going back, and would encourage anyone else who craves this type of food to visit. Excellent experience.

Today my partner and I went into the Chequers for a roast dinner. The guy, who runs the restaurant was very accommodating and very friendly. The interior is absolutely beautiful-a perfect blend of exposed stone, beams, hardwood floor and a bar countertop made of burr elm, which has a interesting history attached to it. I digress…the meal itself was beautifully well presented and the beef was cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend this French brassiere to both tourists and locals alike.
