Bit disappointing. Atmosphere good, setting lovely, menu choices good and staff friendly. However our meals were very disappointing. The portions generous but taste, not so good. A very poor Sunday dessert menu. I wouldn't rush to go again

Popped in for Saturday lunch with dogs. Kind of dog friendly but you can sit in the nice area of the garden with dogs which is off. Looked at menu, only main menu given, asked for lunch menu to be told no lunch menu on a Saturday, no wonder it was so empty. Older relative could t if managed a big meal so had2 tapas style starters which were ok, whitebait (no sauce) and wedges. I had nacho starter which was ok but chilli lack heat and flavour. Others had ploughman’s which were ok. I heard the pub had improved their food offering but it still feel like you are inconveniencing the staff and your custom isn’t really wanted. Has such a great location it should be bustling on a Saturday lunchtime but it wasn’t, I can see why now.

Visit today with family and friends. Food terrible and would definitely not recommend. Used to be good but dead flies in egg on ham egg chips meal! Chip hard. Very disappointing. We mentioned it to staff when she asked and just said they didn’t believe us and flies must of landed after but no we showed her them in the yolk!! We had two dogs. So they got the fatty ham and hard chips etc. staff not interested in an apology and couldn’t care a less won’t be back!

Have visited this pub (now our local) three times in the past month. The food is about 7/10 for quality and a 9 for value. The sticky toffee pudding for £5 is amazing value. We like the atmosphere as it is not too formal and is dog friendly. The negative comments on here about staff members and management is not something we recognise at all. Everyone has been very friendly. Only negative was the music which was much too modern for the aged customers.......some 60's classics would have been much more welcome .

A beautiful pub to walk to through the Loose valley. I have been here several times and this time went with a friend with her very well behaved dog, on the first sunny day for ages we planned to sit outside, but unfortunately there was some gravel being laid. There was an area open but we were told very rudely that we were not allowed there with a dog, and had to sit inside, we proceeded to another table and we were also told we weren't allowed to sit there. When we finally found an acceptable table things started to improve. I understand work needs to be done and about having separate areas that are dog friendly, but we were made to feel unwelcome. A polite request with a smile would have made all the difference.

Tried the new specials menu last night, we shared the belly pork skewers as it was too much for one person, accompanied by cucumber dressing - delicious. We both then had the scallops and prawns wrapped in a fillet of sole on a bed of rosti with a cream sauce - outstanding presentation and again delicious. More on the specials menu to be tried, apparently this menu changes every month - very adventurous of the chef which is to be greatly commended. Back again soon.

Decided to visit The Chequers for a drink and a bit of lunch as we were walking in the area. Ordered drinks and asked for a menu (service with a smile definitely lacking). After looking at the ‘boring’ menu we decided not to eat…mainly because it was usual burgers, pizzas etc…but also completely put off from paying £4.00 for each additional extra. £20 for 3 small bowls of fries and 2 salads in addition to £13-£15 for a burger or pizza. Unfortunately you lost business today….how can you justify £4.00 for a small bowl of chips!

We had a nice lunch, food was good. Waitress must have visited our table approx. 6-8 times to check we were okay, did we need more drinks when they already just arrived, asked us three times if our meal was okay! Then whilst friend was paying me and my elderly Mother were waiting at the door and someone came over to us to ask if we’d paid. As we were standing in the doorway, not the best getaway and a little insulted. Staff need to chill on the ‘Is everything okay’ If we need drinks our glasses would be nearly empty and asking if the food is okay, ask once not three times! Presume two more older people are not trying to cut and run and don’t tell me this happens often in Loose

I booked a table for three online for myself, my father as it was his 81st birthday, and my wife as she had not been here before. Great choice of real ale including two from the Musket Brewery which is just up the road. Service was great. Unfortunately the kitchen was running low on steak, so I had to go for a second choice which was a burger. No matter though it was delicious. All the food very well presented. Food and drink prices very reasonable for the range and quality. If you have not visited this pub you should make the effort. Summer evenings in the garden after a walk along the stream are fabulous.

Visited for Sunday lunch. Unfortunately the experience was incredibly disappointing. I ordered a Sunday roast but if you want any sides with it you have to pay extra. Sides were all £4 each so a roast dinner with 2 veg comes in at a hefty £22! Went for 1 veg side described as a “little bowl of green veg” and was expecting a large portion for the money. Food arrived and my husband laughed out loud. 3 small potatoes, 2 slices of dry overcooked ham and gravy. I had to send back as too dry and inedible for the money it cost. Manager was very apologetic and offered something else but I opted to go without. Such a shame as it’s a lovely pub but the menu is just too pricey and very little atmosphere for a Sunday. We were sat alone in the dining room. For what you get in other local pubs in terms of value for money I can see why they struggle to get diners.

As always, my most recent visit to the chequers was superb. The food was great, atmosphere lovely and it was really reassuring to see their social distancing measures in place. A doorbell on entry to monitor the amount of people in the pub, online ordering so, once sat at your table you do not have to get back up again, the tables in the garden and in the restaurant were spaced out and I heard staff telling customers who chose not to order using the online service that only one person per party could come up to the bar. I felt safe and comfortable, and they have achieved that as well as still maintaining a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. The friendly staff, lovely food and beautiful surroundings make this an absolute must visit. Well done to The Chequers who have absolutely got social distancing done correctly in a pub!

The measures they have in place are good they’ve even got a door bell now so they can monitor numbers entering the pub. There were plenty of staff working so if we went to the bar time there was minimal and distance appropriate. Table service was offered as well. Visited for lunch earlier in the week with family. We all really enjoyed our food but felt really uncomfortable with the apparent complete disregard to any form of covid measures. The most unsafe I have felt anywhere since the beginning of this pandemic in fact - including the hospital I work at! The backs of the chairs were touching between tables, thats how closely we were sat to others and no masks worn by any staff etc. This lack of precautions then leads you to wonder what other lack of hygiene/ precautions go on in the kitchen. We left without dessert and sadly won’t be back.

But we needn’t have been, we had booked and our table was in a well ventilated area, all windows & doors open. Greeted by a lovely lady (Rowan) who showed us to our table. Ordering was simple and our food (starters & main) was delicious. We had a most enjoyable evening and nothing seemed too much trouble, it was clear that all feedback was gratefully received - as with most pubs trying to get back in their feet in these trying times - all they want is for you to have the best experience possible and that’s exactly what we had. I look forward to going back with my “bubble” friends very soon.

We visited this pub last week for a drink and chips snack whilst fishing in the stream. We were greeted by a happy and welcoming man on the door who took details for track and trace-we wee others eating and the food looked lovely so we booked to return for a birthday meal. Sadly our next experience was a sour one! And if this was the first visit I’d have never returned! We were greeted or should I say grunted by a woman (pony tail, glasses on head, tattoo for management to identify and maybe reconsider this ladies position in the business) who confirmed our ‘booking’ but then said ‘sit anywhere’. So we had to walk around the pub and hunt our own! We chose a table out of the way, tucked in a corner as one in our party is just out of ‘shielding’. We were then stormed at by said staff with a ‘You can’t sit there I’ve just got off the phone and booked that out’! I will add, after stating we also booked and were told to sit ANYWHERE we would remain where we were!Last week the gentleman on the door had everyone told. Shoes, tops, etc. Yesterday’s experience I think it depended who you was! There were people with no tops, no shoes, roaming in nappies. The doorbell would ring and the phone and you’d hear staff shout ‘’Go away we’re closed’‘We were given used menus! No children’s menus So again had to hunt our own! You were made to order at a cramped bar, with no shields.Covid compliance in this pub is non existent! Thankfully We carry gel, Wipes etc everywhere and you certainly need them here to feel safe! Shame.Let’s not forget my first experience here was a good one... There were other very smiley, happy, friendly staff. Visited for dinner with the family recently . Pub is in an idyllic location by a stream .All the food we ordered was fantastic however the Covid proceedures left a lot to be desired . On the plus side outdoor tables were social distanced . However I wasn't impressed that the condiments were self service, menus had been used by previous diners and food and drink orders had to be placed at the busy and cramped bar rather than taken at the table by a waitress or placed via an app . It was therefore impossible to social distance when placing a food order. As great as the food was this lack of Covid rules would prevent us returning .

All staff were friendly and attentive, even though there was another very large party there. Our food came quickly and was just soo good. Could not fault the food, service or anything about it. Amazing 10/10. Highly recommended.

Relaxed atmosphere and tasteful decor in this wonderful old inn. Took our 3 dogs there and had the lunchtime deal for 2 burger meals. Service was first class and the food was unbelievable for the price, all home made and tasty. Staff are extremely welcoming and efficient, and our dogs even got some treats. Very rare to find such an unpretentious non overpriced pub, which incidentally had some great real ales on. Will be back as soon as we can!!!

There were four in our party and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening at The Chequers. We had three courses with starters of Tempura prawns, whitebait and soup which all came quickly and together and were delicious. The mains of salmon with broccoli and sauteed potatoes were also delicious and the salmon was a really good portion. We finished with desserts of crumble and sticky toffee pudding which were really good. We will come again.

Great food, friendly service, wonderful local. Had a tasty steak dinner, cooked to perfection, washed down by a pint of Doombar and finished off with the cheese platter. The Chequers is a period Pub located in the picturesque village of Loose catering for locals and diners alike. Due to the quality and value of the food it is wise to book a reservation to avoid being disappointed.

Not a place I would recommend to go for a friendly meal, reasons being:-1) They aren’t very friendly (unless you’re a local it seems)2) The food is terribleThe plus side is; its set in a beautiful location however the ambiance ends once you step through the door

Loose is somewhere quite difficult to escape from. The Chequers is very much at the heart of the community and providing great food, real ales and a really friendly atmosphere. There are specially themed nights and special offers, such as the 2 for 1 burger night. As a vegetarian I particularly enjoyed the halloumi burger. They have Doom Bar on draught too. The service is really good and overall it is exactly what you want from a country pub. There are regular events, such as band nights and the location is stunning, outside spaces next to a river and meadow.

Visited the Chequers this week, we had mains and desserts. I had the ribs and my partner had the fajitas, both meals were fantastic. Then both had a sweet, one sundae and one chocolate brownie. Again both super yummy.

Met a friend for lunch and the staff, food and overall experience was great. I know the pub well and the staff in particular are great. A call out for Rowan in particular.

The bar area is quite small and cosy, but the restaurant and gardens give more room and space. The beer selection is good and the food menu serves up the regular items you'd see on most menus.

A table of 11 you'd think you'd be eager to impress in the hope of future business but clearly not! Went as a family for a birthday lunch but will never go back ever again!! Me and my partner shared nachos to start which were served stone cold!!the roast dinners were disgusting, the beef was chewy the broccoli wasn't fresh or cooked well, the roast potatoes may as well have just been booked potatoes and the cauliflower cheese looked like it was finished with some kind of radio active cheese,I mean illuminous yellow!! Then on to the desserts, not only did we have to wait for ages in the world's most uncomfortable chairs which make your back feel like you've been tortured for a couple of hours But when it came out was inedible! The cheesecake was clearly frozen and not defrosted as I couldn't even get my spoon through the base! So didn't even eat it. Will never go back to this place again!!

I came for lunch here with a group of friends and absolutely loved it here. Most of us had burgers from the burger section of the menu and they were delicious! Great value for money and the pub is charming.

Chequers looks charming, situated by a gentle stream and a pond, and inside is delightfully traditional. The food is standard pub grub, with an occasionl venture into the slightly exotic. We started with some whitebait in a heavy crumb coating (the portions are generous - a ‘small’ was quite enough for two) and my partner chose steak, as we had arrived on Steak Night, and I decided on Spaghetti Alfredo for a change (and wished I hadn’t). The steak was good, but the chips were small and overcooked and looked like the last knockings from the fryer, and the Alfredo was a clump of spaghetti with large slices of chicken on top which were hard to cut up. We finished with a very good, and sudstantial, sticky toffee pudding, which again, we shared. We mentioned the chips to the waitress, but heard no more.

It has been some time since we last visited this pub for a meal because last time we came here we were very disapointed especially as the food here had always been very good. Fast forward a couple of years to today and my wife and I were driving past to see a pub garden full of people enjoying the last Rays of summer so we stopped off to have a quick drink which ended up with us having one of the best pub Sunday lunches ever. Well worth a visit and we will be back very soon to try out their evening menus which looks very enticing indeed.

A nice dog friendly local pub, good quality food made with quality ingredients. The drinks are quite expensive though - £3.20 for a pint of lemonade out of the ‘tap’ is not good value.

I visited with my partner on a Sunday afternoon after a walk around the area for a Sunday afternoon lunch. The food was wonderful and we sat outside which was very peaceful and pretty. The service was fast and all of the staff were friendly and helpful. We were so impressed that we returned two weeks later for my partner's birthday meal and once again had a great experience. The food was outstanding and even the booking experience a week before was straightforward (I booked by phone). They are very accommodating and create a great atmosphere, it's very relaxed and welcoming. The location is beautiful and perfect for a picturesque wander. We'll keep returning without a doubt, even though it's a 45 minute drive away for us, it's certainly worth it.

In a day and age where instead of speaking to the staff to compliment them we instead go online and criticise, I have made in my resolution to review as many places as I can.

Recent visit with our friends for Sunday lunch, great choice of food on the menu especially the burger selection. When the food came the food was very generous, tasty and so many homemade thick cut chips. Only one of us had room for a dessert which was a shame as they are all gluten free and homemade. Good selection of drinks too especially if you like gin! Service was good and very friendly atmosphere. Did not sit in the beer garden as appeared far too smoky. Inside was comfortable and had a nice table in the window.

We spent 2 nights here - the night before and the night of our son's wedding. The rest of the bridal party - including the Bride and Groom - stayed here on the wedding night. The Manager, Mark, was quick to address and resolve a couple of problems that cropped up as a result of an engagement party taking over the entire restaurant and bar the night before the wedding. The rooms were clean, cosy and comfortable. The breakfasts were great - especially the one for 24 people the morning after the wedding. Nothing was too much trouble. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and appreciate the care Mark and his team took of us all. Thank you.
