The Chequers at Burcot in South Oxfordshire

We were looking to stay in the Oxford area, we settled on the Chequers because it ticked most of our requirements. Free car parking. King size bed, en-suite room not above a pub and not too far out of the city, etc. We took the bus. Accommodation in the city was/is overly expensive, some had very limited parking and there seemed to be a trend of not providing breakfast onsite. Positives at The Chequers; Easy parking, check-in painless. Room first impression appeared clean and well presented. Good facilities. Easy WI-FI connection. We pre-booked a table for that evenings meal. Restaurant was clean with a friendly atmosphere, open fire. Food was good. All staff excellent. Negatives. Restaurant is a bit over priced. Some dishes excellent, others not so much. Fridge in our room was noisy but easily sorted by switching off overnight. Minor issue. The flashing lights in the smoke detector above and facing the bed, very annoying. Noise from the road, really intrusive with windows closed. There seemed to be people coming and going at all hours in the gravel car park. Mould in our shower cubicle sealant and grouting. Water overflowing out of the shower tray flooding the bathroom floor. Only one cup of coffee provided in the price for breakfast, you could purchase extra coffee at £5.50 per cup. Coffee machine in our room made good tasting coffee, but only managed to make it luke warm at best. Would we stay again, probably yes. Despite some of the above issues the overall experience was good. Thanks to all the staff who do a grand job.

First impressions really great, room great. Advertised free wifi but I irked to sign in as you have to provide your full name, date of birth email and telephone number so they can send you advertising and who knows if they sell this list to anybody. No permission option to reject. I find that is an invasion of my privacy. I stressed the importance of wifi on phone as needed to work in my room. They never mentioned I would have to give all my details. I would rather have paid for it or I would have gone elsewhere. The next morning I was meant to check out at 11 and because I was trying to finish an urgent project I asked whether they minded an extra 2 hours. The lady at my room said it would be 10 per hour so total £20. I said that was fine. At 11 on the clock a woman came to my door armed with a card machine and said it was £40. I am in the travel business and travel a lot. I never get charged for extra time yet. I think £40 in relation to the room cost of £90 room only is atrocious and just the attitude of coming to my door with a card machine as if I am going to flip before paying. Breakfast is £9. I said I would come for a coffee in the morning and possibly lunch. I had my coffee before all this saga and when I was leaving I thought I better go pay for my coffee. The man said it’s fine but the woman said no and again with her card machine charged me £5.50 for the coffee. More than half the breakfast! I left instantly not interested in lunch in case of another rip off. I understand costs but the way it was done, the attitude of the people and the rates for a small inn which I incorrectly saw as a welcoming place to stop over for the night left me feeling pretty miserable! I won’t be back!

Been here a couple times for lunch. The food can be pretty good, but significantly overpriced. The acoustics are pretty bad and combined with background music it can make for an awkward meal where you can't even have a conversation. They charge a premium price but it's not a premium experience overall.

From start to finish, my stay was nothing short of exceptional. The hotel and its staff go above and beyond to ensure every guest feels valued, with no request being too much trouble. The rooms are beautifully designed, featuring luxurious beds and underfloor heating for added comfort. The food is outstanding, with the crispy poached eggs and venison being particular highlights. I would return without hesitation and highly recommend this experience to others.

Always beautiful food and amazing service from this lovely place! Our favourite place to go for date night :)

The best roast lamb I have ever had!

Went here on a Sunday evening for a family meal with our Boys 12 and 17. 2 roasts 1 beef 1 Lamb, 1 crab salad and 1 avocado salad. The price was £176 with 2 beers and 5 Cokes. The Crab salad was good and enjoyed. The Avocado was OK but not mixed well with clumps of ingredients. My Wife enjoyed the Lamb with the Mint sauce being very nice and Lamb well cooked. My roast beef was cooked well but 1 potato was rock hard, you get 2 and looked like it was from a few days ago. The roasts weren't hot, barely warm. Yorkshires we're like hard, brittle biscuits. All the deserts looked nice but the Sticky toffee was small, tasteless and not hot. I think Steve needs to do a better job for what he charges. Overall nowhere near worth the money. We won't bother to return.

Exceptional. My wife and I went to end our honeymoon week and could not have been happier with the service, The food was outstanding and the staff were so friendly. We were greeted with a card from the staff and at the end given a dessert on the house to celebrate. We will be going back.

One of the most wonderful vegetarian Sunday roasts I've ever had! The setting was gorgeous, the staff were kind and friendly and the food was fantastic.

Exceptionally good on every level!

Can’t comment on rooms as have only been for lunch and supper. The service is exceptional as is the food. Always consistent. Been there so many times and can honestly say I have never had a bad meal.

Just wow! Stumbled across this place needing to stay overnight near Oxford and we have found a gem. Food was next level and they really know what they are doing. Hotel accommodation sweet and hospitable.

Chequers was recommended to me and it didn't disappoint. We visited for a birthday meal and it was lovely. The service was great and the food and cocktails were delightful. I'm looking forward to visiting this lovely pub again soon.

I have just spent three nights here as a solo traveller. The staff were beyond lovely. From the moment I arrived they were so warm and welcoming and Kim really looked after me during my stay. The breakfast was delicious and the eggs were cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend the place to anyone.

We have just returned from a 2 day stay. It was first class accommodation and the food was superb. Thank you to Steve, Maddi and the team for such a welcoming break. It's 5 stars from us all round.

Nice room, but really dusty.minimal cleaning between guests I feel. Food service was quick and efficient. But the 2 star overall rating was due to food produce quality relivent to price point. Banger's and mash for £17, with the richmond style sausages. £40 for two cooked breakfasts with only slightly better ingredients than wetherspoons. This vastly needs improvement .

We visited The Chequers last September and booked a deluxe room which advertised Prosecco on arrival which we didn’t receive. We assumed this was our mistake as there were mini bottles in the fridge. Upon arrival this year again we didn’t receive the prosecco advertised so decided to ask after breakfast the following morning and we were told not to take the miniatures as we would be charged but our query would be discussed with management. We heard nothing and again mentioned it the next day on check out, and received the same answer. The rooms at the Chequers are lovely and the high ceilings and exposed beams are a nice feature. Our room (1) had some paint tester patches on the wall which seemed strange but I’d guess they are looking to redecorate. The only negative would be that you can hear everything outside and the gravel driveway doesn’t help that. There was also a wash cloth left in the bathroom by housekeeping and areas of the room were quite dusty. The service and quality of breakfast was excellent too. I would recommend staying here but it’s slightly frustrating for something to be advertised and not received on 2 occasions.

We had lunch here. Tasty, well-cooked food at reasonable price. Bar was a bit noisy so we sat outside. Excellent service.

We spent two wonderful nights here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The food was delicious! We highly recommend the Berkshire lamb rump, the Cauliflower steak and The Burcot Breakfast (especially the scrambled egg!). The room was spotlessly clean, nicely decorated and had everything we needed. We were so impressed by the fantastic customer service, from the phone call when we booked with the manager, to our arrival (chilled Prosecco and glasses in our room) and then a special anniversary brownie and card at dinner. Highly recommend this for an overnight or short break.

Our room was very clean.Spacious bathroom and lovely room with comfy bed. Maddy and her team were so friendly and polite.Nothing was a problem for them. Food was absolutely delicious.Especially loved the starter of greek salad so tasty. Definitely will be back

We ate here last night. Food was incredible as was the service. Friendly and welcoming staff and great menu. Bit on the pricey side but with the quality of the food it didn't feel like we were being ripped off. Definitely recommend.

I know was a miserable photo but it was the most delicious bannof art all! The service at the dinner, all servers and the ambiance was wonderful! Kitchen was wonderful and those meals for 3 were impeccable! Kitchen is extremely clean, I saw the team clean the kitchen more than 9 times! Best ever restaurant! 🇧🇷 This restaurant was an excellent experience from beginning to end! The kitchen is impeccable and the team sanitized the place nine times! The menu is wonderful, covering vegans and vegetarians, the wine list is delicious and the dessert is phenomenal! I highly recommend it! the

My husband and I have jut enjoyed an anniversary dinner at the Chequers and what an evening! The food was fantastic, service impeccable and a great atmosphere. The staff made us feel so welcome and spoilt us from the moment we arrived. I cannot thank the team enough and look forward to the next visit!

Fit in a table of 11 last minute and from a ‘hard to please’ group this was the best roast we’ve all had. Thanks team.

Absolutely delicious meal. Unfortunately I was so ravenous I didn’t pause to take any photos but I highly recommend the pork belly bites, scotch egg, calamari, venison burger (really fantastic), perfectly fried fries, broccoli pea and cabbage side. Rhubarb crumble was also superb. Nice surprise was that they had an English white wine on the menu (from Devon) which was quite unusual worth a taste. Service friendly with helpful recommendations. Dogs welcome too!

Room was beautiful and clean, smelt of fresh linen. Being a bit of a clean freak this made me really happy. Great room faculties and not that far from the centre of Oxford. We eat here twice and each time the food was delicious, so no complaints at all. Thank you for a lovely stay.

First time visiting on my way back home from SW. Food and Staff was excellent a real find !! and will visit again in the future. Room did have a few issues but it would not stop me booking again

Had been wanting to try this pub for quite a while but sadly it didn't live up to the hype. The starter was really salty and the roast wasn't value for money. Won't be going back.

The most wonderful staff, especially Mac. What a welcome, made us feel so at home, true hospitality. Service impeccable. Very close to Oxford for exploring the sights.

Popped in for breakfast. A warm welcome greeted us and we were both very impressed with the food. Service was prompt and the decor is beautiful. Would recommend and will return.

Friendly, happy staff. Just what you need on a well earned venture day out , restaurant was very cosy, lights and flowers on the ceiling, down to the food, well I would say it was worth every penny.

Always stay in a room overnight as the owner to experience what a customer experiences. The rooms look good initially but No.5’s chair is dirty. A lot of the fixtures and fittings are loose. The fridge was loud so had to be switched off, the taps are too small to use if you have any dexterity issues. The bedding is not good quality but the worst thing was the communal entrance. You can hear everything, and I mean everything that goes on next door and in the hallway. We had a very selfish couple who would bang the doors, smoke stand outside on the phone and talk loudly. Admittedly that is not the hotels fault that they were selfish idiots but there is no noise dampening between rooms. The restaurant is VERY expensive for what they serve. The food was okay but definitely not worth what they’re charging. Drinks were at London prices which put us off staying any longer than one. The car park is gravel so you hear every car and not disabled friendly. Overall, very disappointed with our stay and definitely not returning.

Had lamb roast was nice soft meat. And desert was OK would prefer it served different was tricky to eat out a pot

Just visiting area booked in for early dinner. I had version burger my partner had a salad. Salad was good my burger had flavour but was luke warm at best . The fries were fries. Service excellent and the waitress was kind enough to knock off the service charge after I mentioned the burger. Expensive for what it was.

On 27th April 2024 my wife and I held our wedding celebrations at The Chequers in Burcott, we cannot be any happier with the service and attention that we received. The food was amazing, as it is every time we visit, the service from the incredible staff was the best we've ever received and the rooms were so comfortable after a long day on our feet. We set our wedding celebrations expectations high, Mads, Steve and the team delivered so far above our expectations, in each and every way possible. We've received so many compliments on the food, drinks selections, service and atmosphere from all our friends and family that celebrated with us. If you are thinking of visiting the region, looking for somewhere to eat, drink or stay overnight, go to The Chequers as this is bar far the best venue in our region - you will not be disappointed. We just stopped to eat dinner. Delicious unpretentious savoury and generously served by friendly staff. Reasonable prices and atmospheric premises. For an expat like myself looking for British classic tastes, I got lucky here!

Every time I go to The Chequers at Burcot, I come away with a smile. We turned up this time with a party of 30 and they comfortably squeezed us in and provided a great afternoon's respite after a long day walking. The last two times we came to eat and the food never disappoints. "Scotch egg heaven" as my family describes it 😊. Added 12/4/24. Another enjoyable night, with a perfect combo shared platter to start with Scotch egg, onion rings and fish bites.

I love this place ,ive owned Michelin bib gourmand restaurants,and I cannot fault the food,not ever. The new young guy who has taken over as manager is just amazing,I think he is called mac, he's totally on the ball,he misses nothing,his attention to detail is superb,it's a fantastic experience,faultless,

Took wife for birthday meal,we were greeted with v v happy chatty hostesses (owners wife, and she is lovely ) birthday card on arrrival for the wife,, nice touch, early for booking so were sat by bar for opening drinks menus arrived advised of where table was and ready when we were 15 mins later shown to table . Given time to browse menu, plenty of choices ! Order taken with a smile and convo from young efficient waitress, starter arrived approx 10 mins after ordering ...impressive for v busy sat eve , tasted lovely and piping hot both dishes! Nice break given between starter and main, which arrived looking spectacular and tasted superb...all in all brilliant food staff atmosphere the.whole experience

It's less than a mile from home, hence perfect location to have some food and drinks, however it's never ordinary... Always exceed our expectations! Tks chef and team.

Went for a NYE meal with my partner. Lovely food, great atmosphere and very friendly service. Highly recommended as a place to eat and drink.

Good food, but extremely overpriced. £15.50 for a gin and tonic, £13 for a glass of wine and £13 for children's fish and chips. Won't be going back.

We have been visiting The Chequers at Burcot for years, it used to be ok but recently the prices have increased and the quality of the food and the service has dropped. I took my mum for a NYE dinner and her £36 fillet steak arrived like charcoal, mine was less burnt but not right. The fries were greasy and cold and the mac cheese looked worse than store bought. Upon pointing out the charcoal steak to the waiter, he told my mum to try it, she might like it and proceeded to walk off in a huff. When he returned to the table with condiments, my mother informed him that a he didn’t like it. He was then even more obstinate, saying “this steak is cooked by Steve Sanderson, the owner and that is cooked correctly, plus you wanted it cooked well done”. At this point I informed him she would not be eating it and it needs to be changed, he ripped it from the table and stormed off. Following this service, we decided that we would not be continuing the meal, I spoke to another server/FOH and told her we would be paying for the drinks but nothing else. I realise that she was trying to apologise, but there was no amount of touching my shoulder that would make me change my mind. And felt like an invasion of my space. So we paid for the drinks and walked out. On the way out, another server joyfully said ‘I doubt I will be seeing you again, maybe on the street’ Thanks to Steve Sanderson and the team for ruining our NYE.
