Absolutely fantastic food and extra friendly staff who were so attentive and helpful. Our food was amazing very tasty and really generous portion sizes. So much so we asked to takeaway what we had left, which would feed us both again tomorrow. The overall bill was so reasonable in fact we thought they had made a mistake. Fantastic staff place, I’d highly recommend and will definitely return if we visit the area in the future.

Ordered through their phone line this time at 17:30 (!) as had a bad waiting experience (2 hours) through just eat and we’re told we’d get a more realistic waiting time. Told an hour, arrived 5 mins and had to wait another 25 mins. Ridiculous wait time for a Tuesday night and asked why so slow? Apparently lots of takeaways and deliveries, funny that as only one other person picked up just before me and no-one else waiting, the restaurant had one table. Perhaps they went out another door?? Maybe they need to get more chefs as this is a constant problem and so much so that we are disappointed pretty much every time. Like they seem to be with serving food we’ll not hurry…to come back if at all.

I ordered a takeaway at 6:30pm via the app, the restaurant called me to say due to the size of order it would not be ready until 8:30pm. I said no that’s too long, kitchen says they will have it ready by 8:10pm. I said no that’s ok I’ll cancel and go elsewhere to which the barmaid tells me it’s a big order they don’t want to lose the order and they will have it ready at 7:30pm to which I agreed and said i’ll see you in an hour. On arrival just before 7:30pm I was repeatedly fobbed off with “your order is being packed”. After spending £90 + I eventually get my order at 8pm. I appreciate it was a Saturday night and restaurant was busy but I feel this establishment had no intention whatsoever to have my order ready at 7:30pm as promised. This place should have just been honest. Lying and putting profit first isn’t the way to keep a customer happy - sorry some extra pickles and being palmed off with a couple of small bottles of Prosecco didn’t cut it. Why this place couldn’t refund me the £20 i requested for the inconvenience I do not know - I was robbed tonight! Beware customers - the staff are liars and clearly can’t cope with larger orders.

The only negative we had was we found the pub to be a little cold, understandable due to the high energy costs but it is still important to keep guests warm! This is the only reason we did not give them a 5 star review. Cannot fault the food or the service though, quite simply the best curry we have had in Cambridgeshire! I had a lamb bhuna and asked for it to be madras hot, the lamb was succulent with no gristle and it was the perfect heat. Bombay potatoes were creamy, perfectly cooked and delicious as was the chilli naan. My partner had a king prawn tika masala - also madras hot. The prawns were enormous and plentiful and she thoroughly enjoyed it. Our waitress Lynne was fantastic and knowledgeable when questioned about the menu - a real asset to this restaurant, so much so that we tried to steal her to work in our Pub! Will definitely be back

The food was absolutely delicious. I’ve had westernized Indian food all I’ve the world and this was by far the best! The korma was spot on, not too sweet as some other places do. Poppadoms tasted homemade and the sauces we perfect. My husband enjoyed his meal as well, although I can’t remember what he ordered. Waitstaff was friendly and service was great. The Guinness on tap was the cherry on top!

Seeing as my favourite choice of Indian takeaway was closed on the bank holiday (18th of September, 2022), I thought I'd try this one. Sadly, after waiting an hour for my order to be ready, when I arrived home with it, I found that much of It was wrong. The kitchen blunders ranged from the requested meat samosas being vegetable ones and the king prawn vindaloo featuring no king prawns whatsoever. After speaking with them over the phone, they offered me to return some of the food for a refund, which I did, but that's scarcely the point. Needless to say, I will not be returning and certainly would never recommend them to others.

Thank you. Now the food fresh, well seasoned, tasty, individually unique. You really must try this place if looking for good takeaway or dine in. The added bonus is that they can cater for food intolerance. Thank you!

This place is brilliant! We popped in here after a recommendation by our host at the equally amazing Trinity Hall b&b, we booked very last minute, and the restaurant were very accommodating with us here! Without doubt this is the best indian food i have ever eaten😍 the portions were huge! Everything tasted so fresh! And the chef was able to amend my curry to my preference which was great! The staff were all lovely and super friendly, and it was a lovely way to mark mine and my partner’s anniversary ☺️ Prices are also very reasonable considering everything we had! In addition we were offered dips and poppadoms at the start by this time we hadn't looked at menu and thought it was included but it was, if we knew how much it was probably wouldn't of had that as a starter. The night we visited we had a wait for our main meal of nearly 2 hours. If we had been told this when we called and reserved the table or even on arrival we probably would not have opted to go. The waitress apologied a few times and was run off her feet being the main staff attending to everyone but still we waited. Our main meal came out around 10 pm. The food is always good here as we have dined here before but the wait was hard as my appetite had passed at this time of night. We did get most of food bagged up to take home. I won't let this taint my view and hope to eat out again here.

I have to admit, I really didn't expect this in a little village like Fordham! It is sometimes difficult to find vegan friendly restaurants, especially in smaller locations. Just about every dish was available as a vegan option, not just a few that you normally find. The food was absolutely delicious, and I will definitely be returning for more! Dessert options need some attention, from a vegan perspective. Could not fault the meal.

Recommended to us by the owners of the nearby excellent Trinity Hall B&B; where we were staying. It is always a bit alarming when you realise that you are the only customers but we placed our orders and accepted poppadum's and dips whilst our food was prepared. The dips were the best ever and were left with us for the main meal. We had a Lamb Khurzi and a Shakoothi Chicken with coconut rice and Peshwari Naan. The meals were out of this world and the portions large. I only wish this place was nearer home so we could eat here more often. Also mention of the owner who was very sociably and good company. If you enjoy Indian food do not miss out on eating here. Our table was by a warming fire always welcome on a cold winters evening - it snowed that night.

I've eaten here a few times over the years but my most recent visit has really hacked me off. I ordered a takeaway and on arrival 45 mins later to collect I was told the order hadn't even gone to the kitchen and that I'd have to wait 10 mins. Annoying, but I could live with it. They gave me a beer on the house whilst I waited which was a plus. 25 minutes later I eventually get my food. Then I was hit with the bill. Nearly 60 quid for 4 people seems bit steep rally but looking at their menu on the tables I could see that most of the mains are now £10. Again I can live with that to a degree because in the past all the dishes came with 8 large pieces of meat and plenty of sauce meaning you could actually get 2 meals out of it. Not this time though. My dish wasn't even chicken tikka which I paid for and it had 4 medium-ish sized pieces and 2 small pieces. This meant i had far too much sauce and not enough meat. Don't get me wrong the food was decent but not for the price and the quality of service. This is not the first time they have screwed up with our takeaways either (last time they gave us a side dish instead of a main so one of us had to dip out of the curry).

I'm honestly surprised to see some of these negative reviews, our naan has always been some of the very best I've had (even in India). The pompadons are fresh and delicious. My usual dish is the Shashlik Masala and never disappoints. Sometimes it does feel like you have to wait a while for the food, but it's always worth the wait and you know the cooks are making sure it's the best they can give you. We fancied a curry and thought we'd try the chequers again seeing as we live one village over. We used to be fairly regular takeaway/restaurant customers but started to feel like it wasn't value for money and the quality was going down hill so we'd go the old scotch. This restaurant trip I'm pleased to say that my wife and I enjoyed the curry itself and took away what we couldn't eat. The dining experience on this Friday night was as per previous Chequers experiences where the food simply took forever to come out and I was on the verge of asking where the f it was. This time we didn't go for the overpriced poppadoms and refused the "would you like another drink?" that may distract you for 10-20 minutes while you wait too long. So, It feels a little like two things could be going on here, tactics to extract more money out of you and priority given to takeaway customers meaning a long wait. Not an ideal dining experience and it will be a long time before we return if at all to eat in...maybe a takeaway.

We were passing through Fordham and our daughter was hungry. We saw other children inside eating and cars in car park which is usually encouraging. However it's described as an Indian restaurant and English Bistro which really isn't true for starters. It's an Indian restaurant with 5 English dishes. Firstly my wife's drink was forgotten. Then the poppadoms were stale. For the mains our daughter had sausage and mash which seemed edible. However my chicken tikka was the toughest chicken I've ever eaten in 25 years of eating Indian cuisine and I left over half my main course because it just wasn't enjoyable. The staff were friendly but completely rushed and it seemed to be all a bit chaotic. We don't live close so we won't be back!

After 15 minutes of being steadily ignored by staff, we went around to the other side of the bar, where we waited for another 5 minutes before giving up and leaving. Not one member of staff even looked at us, let alone acknowledged our presence or said that they would be with us in a moment. I've never experienced anything like it! The bar wasn't even busy! It is a real shame as this used to be a fantastic restaurant. As a reviewer said below - what has happened? We arrived to find the Chequers absolutely packed which felt to be a very good sign. And it was, these people were all there for very good reasons. Finding that we could have two glasses of prosecco for £5 before 7:30 got the evening off to a great start. The men were disappointed that there was no Cobra, it had run out, but they managed to find a beer that was equally acceptable. We ordered poppadoms and dips to munch while perusing the vast and quite unusual Indian menu. The dips were excellent, all home made. The menu was difficult but only because there were so many fabulous choices. We all selected dishes that don't generally appear on usual Indian menus and we thoroughly enjoyed everything. The garlic rice was incredible. The naan bread was freshly made and, once again, different and delicious. The curries were outstanding. It was great to be served something that didn't taste like a standard sauce that had had a few extras thrown in to make it a dhansak or a jalfrezi, no these curries tasted different. Different but oh so fabulous. We will be going again but with a much larger group of friends.

I had the pleasure of being invited to join a party at the Chequers Fordham last week. What a wonderful evening we had. The Chequers is an old coaching inn but with a novel twist - it serves the most delicious Indian food (there is also a Bistro menu). The choice is wide and varied, the portions very generous and all the dishes I tried were so tasty. All the dishes had obviously been prepared to order and everything arrived steaming hot and very nicely presented. The service was nothing short of fantastic - so efficient, knowledgeable and so friendly. Sam, who I think was the head waitress was possibly one of the best waitresses I have ever had the pleasure of being served by and made the evening with her expertise and cheerfulness. Backed up by a very good kitchen, the girls out front made our evening one to remember. Thank you.

I've visited The Chequers many times over the years and have rarely had a bad meal. Granted on a few occasions it's been OK during busy periods but never as bad as last night especially considering it was a quiet Wednesday evening.Stale poppadoms, dips that had obviously been sitting around for a while, cold rice and naan bread, chicken in the curry was tough and the service was incredibly poor. When asking the waitress to politely warm the rice it was taken off the table and returned without an apologie. The stale poppadoms were taken off our bill but the whole experience left all 7 of us feeling like we were doing the staff a favour by coming to the restaurant.Absolute garbage and we won't be returning sadly. Such a massive shame as this was a really great place to eat but it's certainly not now.

Our party of six went here to celebrate a family birthday and as I wasn't paying the bill, I felt unable to make a fuss about the distinctly average food. The service didn't make up for it, most of our curries sat on the table going cold while we waited for the order to be completed and the table was sticky.

Like most English restaurants they have a set menu for Christmas, so I didn't get to try off of their set menu but it was prepared well and everyone in our party was served at the same time.

Called here on our first night in the area on holiday and recommended by the man in the co-op opposite. Its an Indian and English bistro in a typical country style pub. There is 10% discount on food Monday night so we touched lucky, seated immediately in the dining room. Food was okay, I had the prawn puree ( not as good as my local Indian) and hubby had onion bhajis which were nice and freshly cooked. We both had chicken curries, and it was somewhat spoiled when hubby bit on a large piece of bark, which the waitress said was from a seasoning and should have been removed. Waitress could do with not being quite so gushy and false. Okay but wouldn't rave.

We were staying in Fordham for 2 nights and the owners of the B and B suggested we ate at The Chequers so we booked a table. On arrival we were kept waiting for our table and made to feel like a nuisance. Eventually we were shown to our small table squashed between 2 others. The table so sticky the plates stuck to the table. There was a good choice of Indian dishes but all the meat was halal which we will not eat on principal, our choice I know. We both chose a king prawn dish. The prawns were over cooked, rubbery and had not been properly shelled, swimming in a sauce. We enjoy Indian food but not impressed with The Chequers. We found the restaurant rather basic and the ladies tatty and not very clean. We found somewhere else to eat the following night so The Chequers missed out on a return visit.

This is what was a traditional pub, which still has some large tables and small tables, plus the original bar.It is quite darkly decorated in a jazz music theme and has lost a bit of the pub atmosphere - but when we popped in, they were very welcoming and helpful with quite quite a few full tables already.Service was excellent with food in front of us within 15 minutes - the food is very generous in size - my friend asked for a curry in a specific way - which they happily did. The only reason I haven't given this an excellent was that they only had one ale (and four lagers) and the ale was chilled to the same temperature as the lagers!

Had a lovely meal at the chequers last night. Beautiful place lovely staff and more importantly the best indian I've ever experienced. Chicken jalfrezi was cooked to perfection, huge amounts of dishes and plenty big enough! Also they do lovely beers! Unlike a lot of Indians. Highly recommended!!!

I've been to this restraint before and had ok/good meals but my most recent visit was really disappointing. They had no heating on in November so the place was freezing! The nann was very undercooked and was mostly still dough. They got out order wrong and the curry went cold very quickly due to the temperature in the restraunt. We also had waits I between getting the curry and rice as other posts have said. I would of mentioned all of this to someone but at no point was asked how my meal was or if everything was ok, even on payment. Very disappointed and will not be returning

Went out of a meal with a couple of friends, it's an unusual place as it's Indian food in a traditional English pub. You think if they are brave enough to do this then the food should be amazing. It was however quite average but almost no spice. My wife ordered the dopiaza which might have been a stew of all the spice it had in it. Also my tikka masala wasn't spiced, although it was very tasty. The Nan breads and rice were perfect. The service was slow, not replacing our drinks very quickly and we had half of our meal serviced first then had to wait another 3-4 minuets for the rice to come out which was a little annoying sat there looking at a plate of curry with no rice.We got stuck sat in the pub area not the restaurant which was also a bit of a shame as we felt like we were in the middle of the weekend drinkers. The staff were really really friendly and served us very well. I wouldn't go back as their curry was average and can get service and food at a more traditional Indian resultant. Food was a bout £25 each with a couple of drinks each

Food was ok, service was slower than any other restaurant I have been too. They wouldn't even tell us desserts we had to get up to see the board. No one bothered with that so they lost out on that money. We paid for the bill after waiting ages for it and will not bother with it again. Plenty of other better currys around.

We have dined here on a number of occasions and always opt for the Chequers Special, it is well cooked and full of flavours. Unless you are famished don't opt for a starter, all portions are on the large size. The service is very friendly, the menu is well priced and its a relaxing atmosphere. Make sure you book to avoid disappointment as it is always busy. You can always opt foor the take away.

This is one of my favourite places to dine and I am a regular here.It is well priced with a laid back atmosphere, and they serve consistently good quality Indian food, which is halal. On a weekend you may get to sit back and listen to a live jazz band, which makes it a unique and enjoyable experience! They also do takeaway, which is perfect for a lazy night in and the food quality is just as good. My only critisicm is that it is so popular, they tend to sometimes be fully booked in the restaraunt and covering a mass of takeaway orders, which can make service on the slow side. Highly recommended.

We have dined here on a few occasions now and have never been disappointed. The Chequers has a vibrant atmosphere and the quotes on the walls are brilliant too. The food is reasonably priced with plenty of choice and the service is also very good. All in all a great place to eat and I would certainly recommend this place to anyone.

My husband and I took my father-in-law here for his birthday and we all very much enjoyed our curries. What was especially good was watching the staff enjoying their work. Our waitress, Amber, deserves a special mention as she had a beaming smile the whole evening and didn't stop working. She was patient with me when I asked lots of questions about the menu. This led me to make a good choice! A very pleasant evening and I would like to return,

Ate here valentines night with my partner. Restaurant was busy with a nice atmosphere.I've eaten here before and as with previous trips the food was lovely. Decent sized portions, hot and tasty food all presented very nicely. The menu is varied with lots to choose from, including a good wine list and cocktails which are rare around this area! Service was fantastic as always, friendly staff, quick service and helpful as ever. For 2 of us each having 2 courses and an alcoholic drink each was a little under £40 - great value for a great meal. It does get busy so would recommend booking in advance.

The chequer tells you it does British and Indian foodWell it does British food very badly went there for Christmas dinner 2013 started of with being served drink by a very young boy (around the age of 13) the roast dinner consisted of a Yorkshire pud, roast potatoes, stuffing balls all of which was aunt besseys frozen veg and a turkey roll desert was even worse with the mother in law having to spit the pips out off her cherry trifle my desert was a cold mince pie made with puff pastry and brandy butter after eating our £3 meal we asked for coffee only to be told I don't know how to work the machine for £50 a head I was very disappointed will definitely not be going back if you can't cook a roast for roughly 35 people you can't cook at all. !!!!!!

I've reviewed the Chequers before and given it mixed comments. On our most recent visit the food was terrible and the so-called jazz far too loud. The owners should know how many people it can serve at any given sitting. In this instance they took too many bookings and the kitchen simply couldn't cope. On the basis of this experience I doubt we will ever return.

A pleasant evening with friends. in a friendly pub that does Indian food after a fashion. The ingredients were of good quality but the end result lacked the intensity of flavour that is characteristic of Indian cuisine. It was like the meat was cooked separately and then covered in the sauce. Some dishes were better than others. Reasonably priced wine list was good and staff attentive. A few less "there you gos " would have been nice.

Chequers is our local. Local pub, easy place to get out for an evening, great Indian - and when Friday nights are just too much, a great take away to eat in front of TV watching a movie. Staff are lovely, atmosphere is friendly and events (comedy & jazz nights) are great. Highly recommended!!

We went on a Sunday night when there is jazz night. A band called fenboy 3 were playing. They were superb (and come to the pub regularly, so watch out for them). The pub served Indian food, and I must admit I was apprehensive (pubs and indian food usually has overtones of something bland by one of the chain pubs and shipped in). I need not have bothered- the food was incredibly tasty and even though we ordered modestly, more than I could eat (I had the Chequers special) which was very very tasty indeed. The service was friendly; they apologised for being short staffed but were very good and very good humoured. It was actually a shame that the pub was not busier because both the food and the music was a real treat !

We parked across the road, outside the church(popped into the church to explore for 15 minutes as the restaurant had not opened), opened on time at 5pm. Very friendly and engaging staff, excellent menu and we ordered takeaway although the restaurant itself looked inviting. The cuisine was so delicious. We had each ordered a main dish each and added extras to supplement and to share. Different Naan bread's also. My special biriani was so enjoyable and all dishes ordered were subtly spicy. Fantastic value for money, this was on a level par to what we are used to at our local Indian back home. Great meal whilst on vacation in Cambridgeshire.

Very authentic food with a pleasant atmosphere. Curry’s have loads of flavour and the pricing is very reasonable considering the current situation. Definitely recommend this for the surround area.
