Came here for the Sunday menu and the food was delicious. Piping hot, really fresh and good flavours. The renovations are my vibe - nice and cosy with a modern twist and the service was great. Will definitely be coming back.

This is a review of the restaurant (it's still listed as a hotel so not sure how to review just the restaurant). We came here on opening night on valentines day, and came today for the Sunday all you can eat buffet. Both times we loved it! Food is great quality, probably the best Thai food in Royston. The staff are really friendly. The buffet is great value for money and it's a great way to try lots of different dishes. We will definitely return. I would recommend trying to delete the old reviews pre 14 Feb as they are for the Chequers under previous ownership and are dragging the ratings down!

Amazing food, great service. Our new fave thai in Royston. Husband had the duck which he said was the best he has eaten. I had massaman chicken curry which was 5*.

Every review before 14-2-2024 is not for the current Thai restaurant business in this location. The thai is the latest in a line of business to try and make the chequers location work. It's pretty new at the point we used it. Food was delicious. Wine was a bit expensive. There was a small issue with our starters arriving more than 10 minutes apart. But it was a busy night and these things are to be expected with a new place. Food was great though. I'm sure the rest will figure out over time

Great to see new life in this old coaching inn! This review is not about the old Chequers Hotel and Public House, it is about the new Thai Restaurant and Hotel. I have no idea yet what the food or accomodation is like but I wish the owners well, and with work in progress regarding the refurbishment. Very attractive display and signage. It is great to see the building "up and running" again and as previously stated I wish the owners every success in their new business and look forward to eating there soon!

It hasn't changed! Quite pleasant, but for a hostelry mentioned by Samuel Pepys, I expected more than the country pub equivalent of fast food.

What a Lucky find on our travels, will definitely be diverting all future travels in this direction. A beautiful traditional pub in a beautiful village. Extremely welcoming and friendly, and the food was delicious, proper Italian food! Child friendly with a good vegetarian menu, we would recommend the stop.

Do not stay here. Booked to stay on New Year’s Eve and there was sewage coming up through the shower. They were unable to sort the problem in a timely manner so we were not able to use the facilities. I spoke with the contact at the hotel plus the manager who agreed to refund half of the money. However weeks later and still no refund. The management are now not answering the phone. Very convenient little place but have no customer service skills and cannot manage expectations at all. Be safe with where you stay and spend a little more money. Avoid!!!!

We needed a room in the high street to attend a wedding announcement drinks event . And when I searched on line there were not many choices so I plumped for here. It is quite strange it seems to be above the Italian restaurant that is very empty of customers and the way to the rooms is around the back up a fire escape. But once inside both rooms seemed freshly painted and clean. We both had a good nights sleep but did not opt for the £5 breakfast. It is not the standard of a Premier Inn which we would have preferred for the money, but it did the job for one night. The guy running the place was helpful and nice.

Problems gaining access to check in as all doors were locked ... Finally gained entry via a member of staff returning from the shops. Despite a double room being sold to us we were issued with a single room that is described as a double. Quilt on bed was too small and looked like a stamp on a envelope . Bath Room dirty T.V position dangerous as you hit your head when honing to the bath room unless you ducked under it. No toilet paper or towels unless requested. Do not waste good money and stay here !

Different night and a different group of us this time only five of us. Service was slow but then to be expected with only one server! Drinks were slow to be bought to the table and then not 100% right! I chose a chicken and pasta dish, the pasta was fine but the breadcrum coated chicken was very dry. One friend had a Lamb Shank which came with no juice / gravy and looked awful, apparently he said it tasted awful as well. Very disappointed with this and another that we will not be re-visiting any time soon.

My group of four visited last week. We all chose the same vegetarian pizza (I forget the name they gave it) and we al thoroughly enjoyed it. One of our group knocked over a wine glass while the very friendly waiter, Masum. was serving us, yet he nobly took the blame and poured her another glass for free. Great service, great food, and all at a very reasonable price.

I went with family yesterday and having been a few times before the change of management and I'm disappointed by the changes. Firstly the lovely large tables and chairs have been replaced and so it seems has the chef. My husband and son having dishes they had there before said they were not as good as before - the sauces were less flavoursome and watery. I had the risotto after having asked if they did gluten free pizza. My risotto came out with pieces of spaghetti in it ! I took it back and told the waiter I was gluten intolerant and asked for a replacement. I received another one which had garlic bread garnishing the side ! There were a few pieces of chicken but they were overcooked. No fresh herbs were used in any of the dishes unlike previously. It's such a shame as we loved it there when it first opened as an Italian restaurant and I did a 5 star Facebook review. On a positive, my son said the tiramisu was lovely and the staff were attentive but sadly we won't be returning.

After reading all the good reviews had high expectations. Called in mid week early evening asked for a table only to be told we could only have pasta or pizza no explanation offered. As we just wanted a quick meal after a long day said that was fine and ordered seafood linguine and a bottle of wine. The seafood linguine was all linguine very little sauce two prawns and two mussels as described in the previous review. We did wonder if it was because we visited just after the bank holiday.

Arrived at 2pm to find it completely empty. Disappointed with the menu although the prices were cheap enough. Not much Italian on the starters - baked camembert was ok, the bruchetta a bit underwhelming and the chicken goujons served on a bed on iceberg lettuce - not exactly appealing. Apart from pizza, not much Italian mains. The lamb shanks were tough, the seafood linguini wasn't! Two tough prawns and 2 overcooked green lipped mussels with what I am sure was spaghetti. Hardly any deserts, ice cream, chocolate brownie or tiramisu.

Lovely restaurant, with a lovely atmosphere. It has recently changed hands and there is nowhere else in Royston that is a lovely place to eat, with authentic, Italian food. Will definitely visit again.

We went to the Chequers on a a Sunday lunchtime. When we arrived we were the only people there, which was a bit off-putting. Another couple arrived about an hour later, then two more couples in the next 30 minutes. No matter. The food was excellent, best Italian meal we've had since being in Italy last year. No desert menu as such, just two choices, but we would have had the tiramisu anyway. This was truly excellent, it just slipped down, with a double-decker sponge base soaked in a liquer, just like a tiramisu should be. Service not rapid because there was just the one waiter, but we wouldn't mark them down for that. We'll definitely go again.

We've visited this restaurant a few times since it opened as an Italian. The menu is not extensive, but the quality of the food is good. You can just have a pizza and a beer or a three course meal with wine. The most recent trip was for Mothers' Day with my family - there were about seven of us and we all enjoyed our meal.

This was the first time we have visited (15/3/17) since the pub was converted to an Italian restaurant and we were pleasantly impressed. We chose the deal of £6 for pizza/pasta plus a drink. The restaurant was nicely laid out (even tablecloths and proper cloth napkins) and the staff were welcoming. We received complimentary olives and olive bread nibbles, which was completely unexpected but very nice. Our pizzas arrived freshly from the oven and were delicious. We ordered further drinks. Before paying the bill, we were offered a complimentary liqueur (we chose Baileys with ice). This again was entirely unexpected. Clearly, this restaurant is trying to build up its customer base and we wish them every success. Although we opted for the deal, the menu prices are very reasonable. We have no hesitation in highly recommending this restaurant and we will definitely be returning.

Excellent if you're happy with the cheapest pre packaged garlic bread and chips that we ordered as side dishes. I ordered the sea bass that came swimming in cream, I guess it tasted ok which was marginally better than the mashed potatoes that tasted of nothing at all but had the texture of lumpy wallpaper paste. However the strong taste of red cabbage was only outshone by the gummy bear texture. The other adult guests at the table had similar experiences with their meals and let's just say I doubt there was a real Italian Mumma in the kitchen unless she was adept at pinging microwaves. I am always impressed by good table linen though which was lovely, clean white linen and the kids seemed happy with their pizzas. Also the 'Thank you' mints were delicious, but seriously, No Thankyou, never again.

Had a really enjoyable family meal. The current offer of a pasta/pizza and a glass of wine or pint lager for £6 is really good. It was a busy night that we'd booked a table here to try it out. Only 2 waiting staff which tried their best throughout. Waited 10 minutes to get a drink and then took our table. Starters weren't bad but mains were poor. Ran out of potatoes so had burnt oven chips....now that is a first ever! Partner had ravioli. Looked a tomatoe sauce instead of the mushroom cream one described. It was bland sauce with rubbery pasta. Heinz spaghetti hoops would of been better. The tiramisu was straight from a packet. I felt sorry for the waiting staff as they worked their socks off but the food was poor.

Visited here with friends after seeing rave reviews. Unfortunately I was disappointed - they didn't have a drinks menu - had to ask if they had certain drinks. Chair I sat on had a big spring poking through. Lasagne I had looked like it had been reheated in microwave and covered in tomato sauce. My friends pizza was covered in big chunky bits of meat and was really soggy in the middle. Asked for coffees - only one type available and had to ask twice. Staff appeared rushed and when food and plates were put on table they were almost thrown on it. Good point was it was cheap - however, that was fair considering the quality of the food and service. Would think carefully about going there again. Sorry - maybe we just went on a bad night.
