Real cosy vibe, exactly what you think of when you think of an old English pub.

Doug is an absolute treasure! Scampi fries were to die for, excellent flavour. Lovely selection of beers, maybe have some numbers on draught if I was to be picky. Blughhhhhhhhhh

Lovely people and nice beer. The place is looking a bit tired, and needs a bit of an update. Biggest problem is it only takes cash. However, nice place to go for a quiet pint.

Kicked out for bringing kids in while we wait for our Chinese to cook, we even paid full price for a game of pool. The very happy gentlemen (possibly landlord) said I had to buy everyone a drink, Water was not on the menu. The other patrons were extremely friendly, they didn’t have much to say. But they did stare at us when we walked slowly towards the exit. Highly recommended! Filled my kids with so much confidence! I really enjoyed the 10 minutes

Very nice pub. It’s cash only at the moment. The atmosphere is so cosy and there are a lot of nice decorations. There are toilets available and also a snooker table. There are some very comfy seats. It’s a lovely place for a drink.

I was visiting Great Dunmow and I read Evan's review and said to myself "I would like to experience a real pub for a change as these boozers are a dying breed and hard to come by as most pretend wannabe pubs are pretentious". I didn't go for food and went for a nice beer, game of pool with the Mrs. Hell they have a dartboard. Love, the beer garden by the way. The staff were really friendly and felt as if I was home from home. Love the place and really do hope it survives as I said most are dying out and something ought to be done to save the traditional British Boozer. This is as it is, a pub, pub.

A pub pub. No pretentiousness, no wankery, just a proper boozer.

When my wife was younger she lived in the area for quite some time and has some very fond memories of Great Dunmow. Several reviews refer to perhaps a less than convivial greeting! In some ways I quite liked this down-to-earth approach as I didn’t take it personally! They don’t serve food, they only accept cash and there’s definitely no Sky TV. They do have “slots” but as that has no appeal to me I can’t comment on that! There’s quite a nice looking pool table with plenty of space so your Cue action isn’t inhibited. I took some time to look at the pictures round the wall which seems to be steeped in history. When we ordered our drinks we went outside to the “garden” area not expecting very much at all but were gobsmacked by the amount of work and effort that went into creating something really special. It was amazing. They do have a small Car Park and as we wanted to get a couple of things from The High Street he let us use his Car Park which was very nice. If you’re looking for a sprauncy experience with bells and whistles this is not for you. However, if you want a trip back in time - and I mean this respectfully - it’s a shrine to that! It’s certainly different!

Depends on what you want, of course, but on the way back from visiting my brother, I was keen to find a traditional Essex pub. My colleague who is a highly critical person dismissed 2 other pubs and a hotel before we found The Chequers Inn!! Warm welcome, good beer and comfortable. Pretty much everything I was looking for to break up a long journey.

I’ve been in here a few times and been served by different people each time, they seem completely unbothered and act like they don’t want to be there. I thought at first this may be a one off and maybe they were having a bad day but now it’s obvious they’re just permanently cranky and don’t seem to care about repeat custom whatsoever. I’m surprised they’re still in business, they’re always empty and I don’t know anybody who drinks here. There’s no music, you have to pay for the juke box if you want music and it’s £1 for 3 songs. Very out of date The only reason I used to go here was for the pool table which is a 3/10 at best and the cues are ancient. I walked in here the other day to see if they wanted to buy some England flags for the Euros and was told to “f*ck off, get out not interested,” I was very polite and there’s just no need for it. I really think this place is up there with the worst pubs I’ve ever been to. Won’t be going back and would recommend you don’t waste your time or money, try the Boars’ Head if you want football and a nice down to earth British pub. Go to the Saracen’s Head if you want a restaurant/Hunting pub type atmosphere, both have great service and good pints as well as lots of other customers and a decent atmosphere.

Having read some really awful reviews on the Chequers, I find them difficult to believe as the Landlord was extremely welcoming with us. They do not serve food but there a lots of cafes just down the road. This is a typically English olde world pub, with interesting pictures on the walls and lots of artefacts. The pub was warm, comfortable with large armchairs, clean and the drinks were served just as we liked them. The Landlord had many interesting stories to tell us and he was very affable during our visit. The smoking area / garden, at the back, was lovely with ponds and healthy tropical plants. We had a splendid and most enjoyable visit and wouldn’t hesitate to revisit when next in the area.

Dreadful place, dirty, cold, dingy - avoid. It is a great pity as the building is very old and could be quite beautiful. The toilets are cold and horrible. The landlord is eccentric and unwelcoming. I drink diet coke which is only available in expensive small cans.

This place hasn’t changed for years but you know exactly what you’re going to get. It’s a good pub where anyone can go and you all get treated the same. It also has a pool table and is never busy. The joy of Dunmow is you have choices from proper pubs, food pubs & restaurants. The landlord is really friendly but there is no pretence here. Probably not a general couples pub but great if you want some beers and a game of pool/darts.

Love the Chequers. There are only a couple of proper pubs in Dunmow and this is one of the best. Yes the landlord is grumpy but is also a good guy.

Jade Garden has a great menu with a great selection. You are almost spoilt for choice. The staff are great and very friendly. They are brilliant with our daughter who has severe learning difficulties and will adapt the menu for her. We go to Jade Garden on a regular basis and looking forward to another great meal tonight.
