Churchill's Fish and Chips in Uttlesford

It was a terrible experience with a Chinese man who treated us terribly, very rude and in a loud, insolent voice, all for telling him that they forgot to give us a couple of menus, poor service, I do not recommend it.

Me and my partner got chips and savaloy from here yesterday, savaloy was cold and hard same as the chips (clearly had been sitting there for some time) a few hours later my partner was throwing up and on the toilet all night, such bad food poisoning she’s now in the hospital and having to be fed through a drip, I’m not so bad but still been on the toilet and throwing up most of the day, causing both of us to have to take the rest of the week off work which we can’t afford, don’t be returning and quite upset at this experience

Delivery was early but I was there to receive it, so no problems at all.

Ordered a large Haddock and chips and I wish I could upload a photograph here, this was not a large portion and not worth what they were charging. Also this is the second time I paid for salt and vinegar and the second time it wasn’t in the order. It was also on the cold side. This used to be great fish and chip shop sadly standards have dropped.

Delivered promptly on a very dark and rainy night to an obscure address.

Sadly after a couple of bad meals from Churchill’s chips inedible pie fryed up & hard & cold savoury cold like out of fridge curry sauce cold the only thing hot was fish bites as they cook to order id spoken to shop befor buying to explain last 2/3 experiences & was guarantied fresh cook chips hot food well this was not the case so I rang up again to complain where he said my daughter watched the chips come out ??? my daughter went in to get & she said no way did they just come out of fryer they were dry hard cold & most were black & brused im angry he tryed to say my daughter lied then said why did I take so long to ring up unreal this order was over £23 again dissatisfied family I will not use churchills again id rather travel to saffron Waldon at least they are polite & food is fresh I will be contacting head office as I do not appreciate being spoken to so rudely.

I went and got some fries and I paid £4.50 and they put me a small amount of potato chips. I don't think it's fair how much money I paid. It should be a larger amount to how much money you have to pay

What a rip off! Do not use this fish and chip shop if you’re looking for value for money. So expensive, staff couldn’t give less off a toss if they tried and the food was terrible - with small portions of fish and Sundays manky old chips… oh and £3 for a small portion of mushy peas! £30 for a meal for two!! I wouldn’t spend that in a pub!! Any chance of my money back? Doubt it! Should have gone to elsenham for a decent meal at half the price!!! Does the owner know this is going on? Seems his mates are making up most of the comments on here! If I could give it less than one star, I would.

Abysmal. Price up and standards down. Over £3 for a disgraceful portion of hard overcooked chips with wrong sauce supplied. Used to be ok but definitely won't be returning. Shame

Shouldn't really comment on Atmos as was takeaway 😂. Just had medium fish, chips and curry sauce and all of it was excellent. Kids loved there sausage and chips as well. Top marks Churchills and thank you

Normally a fan but ordered panko prawns and 2x large chips. Knew I'd have to wait for the prawns so no issue. They were cooked and I was called to the front to collect,but there were not enough chips. Had the dregs scraped out of what was left and then the prawns and what was no more than a regular chips left on the counter to go cold while more were cooked. The disinterested employee uttered not one word for the 5 minutes wait, I then got home to one lot of piping hot chips, another load of chip shaped bullets that got chucked and 8 luke warm prawns...yummy. Will I go back? Yes as its 2 minutes from home, but if I'm passing Sawbridgeworth I'd probably stop there and drive a bit quicker and be happier!

Never been great, but have put up with it, purchase two cod and chips on the 16 April 2024, it was alfull, not sure what they are doing down there I can only guess they cooking in old oil, chips were under cooked, fish very greasy and tasted nasty. Me and my wife were quite ill today. Will not use again. On a positive note the Chelmsford branch is excellent.

Overpriced. Fish had hardly any fish inside the batter and was pretty average for what it is worth. Won’t be going back anytime soon.

We have been buying fish and chips form Churchill's Stansted for a good few years and whilst the quality has been varied it has normally been ok. Not this time sadly and enough is enough. Chips are clearly form brown/bruised potatoes, very unappetising. I returned them and asked for a refund. Beware that when you click and collect and you need a refund they take 3-5 working days to refund you. As a local chippie, all the flashy signs and offers are worth nothing when the basics of quality control are clearly not being adhered to. I note that the number of poor to average Google reviews means that this place is in decline. We were forced to drive to Stortford for our f+c supper today and we will not be returning to this one in Stansted. No real apology from the so called manager/fryer and he didn't offer to replace them which for me speaks volumes.....avoid.

Haven't been here in a few years, and won't rush back after this eve. I was so looking forward to my food but what a disappointment! Tasteless sausage in very crispy batter half uncooked chips. An that pie " Peters chicken an mushroom pie" full of nothing but juice. Won't be returning unfortunately! What's gone wrong your food used to be a 10, now just about 3.

4th time ordering from here Food arrived in good time, pleasant delivery driver. Food was piping hot, salad was fresh. Food was excellent. Definitely recommend

Fish was cooked on too higher temperature- so much crispy batter made it inedible. Will certainly give it a wide berth for a very long time

Ordered a delivery slot an hour in advance and at one point they even said it was delivered until I contacted them to say it was late. I know sometimes you have to wait but when orders in advance they should be able to meet the delivery time.

I actually drive from Saffron Walden to get my Fish & Chips from here, best Fish and Chips for miles around!

I commend the fact that on Mon/Tue they offer Gluten Free food (cooked and stored separately) and this was our reason to visit, however the experience left plenty to be desired. We wanted only the chicken (already cooked) plus gluten free chips and a BBQ burger. From ordering to receiving the food was well over 30 minutes, time we had to stand there watching people arrive, order, pay, collect and leave with their food time and time again. If we had ordered something exceptional or special/unusual, I could accept it, but the team seemed ill informed for the gluten free service they were offering, making many mistakes for numerous customers as we waited patiently. It was a pretty painful experience if I'm completely honest. A shame really, because it's a great idea, just poorly implemented. 3 stars for a great idea, I just wish the execution matched the intention.

Chips are sometimes nice, sometimes soggy. Last order had a long black hair in it, wrapped around a couple of chips. Not sure I'll be ordering again any time soon.

Quality of food varies, sometimes the fish can small and not the large ordered. It can be oily. Sometimes good all round. No consistency. Nowhere else local to try.

The takeaway I collected was awful Chips were like batter it’s fish no better

Gluten free items on Mondays and Tuesdays, great to have the option!

Food arrived in good time, unfortunately the fish was overcooked and very greasy. We use Churchills a lot and are usually very happy with the food. The food was acceptable but not to their usual high standard.

Nice chips and Curry sauce but large Cod was appalling. Dried up old fish barely edible. Don't know why Southerners can't do decent f n chips?

This shop is run by young people with it appears no guidance.Customer service has always been poor especially I have found with my children who have been overlooked in a queue waiting for items to be cooked as they are frightened to speak up .My main complaint was from this Friday 24\3 when I was charged £6.30 for chips and curry sauce.I waited 6-7minutes for this and it wasn't even a full box of chips.I work in central London and I don't think anyone here dare charge this much despite the higher cost of running a business there. Don't use this shop unless money is no object in your life.

Easy to order, good prices, excellent hot food … best fish and chips down South

Always great fish and chips- not a long wait for your food which is impressive to customers and good quality taste. But I’m put off by the next time i got food from here they gave me smaller portions-tiny box of half the size I used to get from here and when you order the nuggets they start to give you half the initial portion so it’s going downhill here. And one time I got food here it was dry and didn’t cook it fresh as I can’t eat food that’s not freshly cooked.

Really poor delivery service. Never known delivery like it, an hour and a half from ordering and still not arrived. Always consistently late past the delivery time slot and having to call to chase. If there was another fish & chips outlet in the village I would take my business there.

Quick service and care taken for gluten free food.

A meal for myself, fish and chips and a bread roll £15 plus the roll was buttered one side in the middle with something that tasted like wax 🤢the fish was a child portion and just to finish it off it was cold and dry , this happened the last time I bought from here and thought I would give it a little break, but I do love fish and chips so I thought it’s been a few months give it another go if anything it’s got worse, not better avoid like the plague !!!!

Yuk YUK 🤢cold small nearly £16 for just me cod chips and a buttered roll !!! Well that is what I ordered, but I wouldn’t call it that ( £1.20 for a roll that was half the side spread with some sort of yellow wax but must have run out as even the half that had anything on was literally in the middle 🤦‍♀️child portion of fish I ordered medium and was cold and dry never NEVER again I’ll keep to Chinese or Indian after that experience ( I’ve left it a few months as it was awful last time ) but I’ll just say it’s got worse not better so definitely won’t be going there again avoid if you can !!!!

Rude and not friendly staff, with a manager who is afraid to leave his office. The fish and chips wasn't bad but the people who work there are very bad. I was there on 15.11.22 around 5pm. Not recommended!!!

Great food perfectly cooked and delivered fresh and hot.

My order took just under two hours to arrive, when the food arrived the nuggets were lovely but the rest was soggy. Very disappointed as I normally love it here.

The chips were not fantastic this time in that I blame to potato, and the pie was not a pukka pie the pie was Peter I believe and definitely not as good mushy peas are mushy peas ;) so overall not so good.

I have just have two portion of fish & one portion of chips. What a horrible meal that was. Fish must have been fried at least 3 times , there was no fish inside these two rock hard pieces of batter. The batter was so hard it shot across the plate and onto the floor when I try to cut it. I will definitely NOT be using this shop again. Cost a fortune to be thrown in the bin. From one very dissatisfied customer

Pretty excellent burgers and good chips here. One of my favourite takeaways. Always have the chicken burger which is made from actual chicken believe it or not. Chips are pretty standard but also good. Have a loyalty scheme which is also a bonus

Order was wrong one portion of chips was missing and took an hour to arrive, on a Tuesday evening, but was hot and tasted fine also was far too expensive for fish and chips, especially for the small portion sizes.

Zero customer service no acknowledgement of even being there waiting , waited for 10 minutes to be served 2 large chips which were smaller than a small portion told by the rude manager that it was government guidelines that the portions have got tiny , ridiculous !! and if there was any truth where was the signage . Then he said ( after being in there 15 MINUTES) Cash only - again no mention of this or paper bag in the window saying it - totally the wrong person to put in a customer facing role - this place has lost the good service it used to have totally - will be making a complaint to their head office

Lesson learnt! I usually stop at Elsenham Fish Bar on my way home from work. I'm an early Friday evening customer. Today as parking looked tight in Elsenham I decided to go home to Stansted and get fish and chips from Churchills. Big mistake! 2 pieces of fish in heater, that turned out to be dry and not freshly cooked, chips had that 'be sitting in pan' taste and both were cold! £6.99 in the bin and a drive back to Elsenham. Very disappointed in my local chippy.

Very disappointed. Ordered online via company card and requested a VAT receipt as required for putting through on expenses. On collection was told they don’t do them and the printed one should be sufficient!!! The one stapled to the bag was not sufficient as there wasn’t even the price on there let alone a VAT number. Seriously, what the hell? Will be coming in at lunch time today to get this sorted before travelling home. So not impressed, and the food wasn’t overly great either.

Awful. Service is incredibly slow and the food wasn’t worth the wait. Expensive for the small portions, over-cooked chips and even with salt and vinegar the food was incredibly bland. It’s worth the trip to Stortford to avoid.

Always delicious - just the best fish and chips! The estimated delivery time needs amending though - it said 30-50 minutes but it arrived within 10. I would have waited to order if I'd known it would be so quick.

It's a f..fish and chip shop with only 2 types of fish small portions

Ordering over the phone or online is pretty easy and seamless, the menu is varied and they do reasonable lunch offers. However, after a number of visits and whilst the food taste is very good (but not exceptional), we’re always disappointed when we arrive home and open the box to such average portion sizes (despite ordering the large options) and think “is that it?”. After an enjoyable bite, you’re left unsatisfied and wanting more, and also feel aggrieved for how much you’ve paid. Will continue to go periodically out of convenience only. Portion size increases would be greatly appreciated please!

When you order an expensive delivery and it arrives 8mins later you know its not freshly cooked. Very disappointed with the lunchtime leftovers
