Jade Garden in Uttlesford

Jade Garden has a great menu with a great selection. You are almost spoilt for choice. The staff are great and very friendly. They are brilliant with our daughter who has severe learning difficulties and will adapt the menu for her. We go to Jade Garden on a regular basis and looking forward to another great meal tonight.

We love the Jade. The food is simply unbeatable.

Had a takeaway, was the worst Chinese I’ve ever had. Food was cold when we got home so had to warm it. EVERYTHING tasted the same; bland with no flavour except for a very strong floral flavour. Will definitely never use this place again

Great experience all round. 11 adults plus 2 kids. All food came out quickly, the service was spot on. Very busy with takeaways but didn't have any impact on the service we were given, and lady who served us was on her own for most of the time. The food was great! Thoroughly recommend 🙂

Great local take away. Good value, nice food

We’ve only ordered from here a couple of times, usually when we can’t get through to Saffron Walden Chinese. Can’t comment on dining in so I won’t but every time we’ve had a takeaway there’s been an issue. Usually missing items, or an incorrect dish. Tonights food was awful, we ordered Kung Pao chicken and it turns out like the attached picture. It was like boiled chicken in a tasteless broth with a few veg added. Usually it’s crispy with a sweet sauce, like every other saffron Walden Chinese does. Will not be ordering again, we’ve given it numerous chances and it’s always messed up!

The best Chinese food in the region, we have known it for 30 years and food quality has always stayed excellent, the owners always serves us very well and we find prices very affordable in the evening parking is easy in market sq for free. If you get chance to try restaurant on Saturday lunch there are great cheap lunchtime meals so can try it out.

Avoid at all cost! I was there in the 2nd week of August 2023 I ordered a beer and got a warm bottle slammed on the table, I asked for a cold one but the waitress said they didn't have any, and offered to put in in the fridge! I asked for it to be taken off the bill but she refused. If this is the level of service to the customer up front then what do you think goes on in the kitchen? Food came 2 hours after we had ordered and it was terrible , it all looked and tasted the same, dry duck, mushy tastless goo that was supposed to be a sauce, I would not give this food to a dog , the dog would probably die from MSG overdose . The worst thing is that my father in law has been a REGULAR costumer for years, I wonder what else they have gotten away with? My name is Rene Meyer and I have truthfully submitted this REVIEW.

I still love the food from here and will always be my Chinese of choice but for goodness sake, turn your heating on! I've sat in numerous times with my coat on and the poor senior citizens I watched as I sat and waited for a pickup were shivering away. How can you treat your customers like that? I'm very loyal to Jade Garden, but service, timing and atmosphere have all gone down hill in the last few years.

Ordered takeaway at 19:10 and was told it would be ready at 20:20. Turned up before 20:20. There was a long queue for takeaway orders so i asked if they were running late. Was told 10 minutes and asked if that was okay. At 20:40 i gave up and walked out telling the girl at the bar i couldnt wait any longer. Got a phone call as i was walking to my car saying the food was ready… too little too late. No effort to manage expectations or keep me informed. Real shame but not the first time they have been more than 20 minutes late (mire than once every 10 takeaways). I will be looking for a different takeaway in future

We have visited before and had an enjoyable experience which was why we booked it for a celebratory birthday meal. This time though it was not the experience we were hoping for. There were 8 of us, we were not welcomed on entering and the girl behind the bar just pointed to our table. We wanted to share the starters between us all but whether this was not passed on to the kitchen I'm not sure however we did find it difficult to share 3 ribs between 8 people. The rest of the food was very good, but the service was dreadful, unsmiling and obviously the waitress would have rather been anywhere else but there. It wasn't even very busy. We won't be back.

Good food, fast and friendly service. Very quiet though, we were the only people in there for a while.

Really gone down the drain. £23 for - chicken dish, quarter duck, curry sauce and chips. Looked at the menu should’ve cost about £16-£17. I wouldn’t have minded so much if it was actually decent like it used to be. It was FREEZING cold, reduced portions, the seasoning was so off it was so sweet when it was meant to be salt and pepper. I will never go back now. I know mistakes are made and it won’t be perfect every time but to be over charged and to have cold poorly seasoned food, it’s just not worth it. I used to love it here. A friend recommended this place to me a year or so ago. Loved the seasonings and everything used to be cooked amazingly.

Food are really lovely. We enjoyed the food so much and decided to visit the restaurant again on the second day.

The prices are very friendly moreover the food is wonderful. Good quality ingredients, well made dishes and nice serving also. The waitress was kind, friendly and professional. We were in transit and just popped in to eat something, but spent two amazing hours there. Don't miss the jasmin tea. Absolutely awesome experience.

Our second lunchtime visit to Jade Garden, and we were greeted with a friendly welcome. Again, we were the only customers, and our drink orders were taken immediately. We ordered from the set menu, and were informed that we could have a main dish from the regular menu. We wanted some spring rolls, and had their home made ones, which were crispy, hot, and bursting with flavour. We also had deep fried spare ribs, which were amazing! My wife had sweet and sour chicken, and I had chicken chop suey, both of which were well-cooked, nicely presented, delicious, and ample portions (unless you’re a glutton!). In fact, I couldn’t finish all mine. The waitress approached us after five minutes or so, to ask if everything was satisfactory and if we needed anything else. Overall, we were delighted with the service and excellent well-cooked and flavoursome food, and will definitely be returning for a third visit.

Worse Chinese food I've ever had. Sweet/sour chicken balls were bits of dry chicken covered in something like bread dough - they were inedible and I'm taking them back. Lemon chicken was gloop, noodles were swimming in grease duck was dry - tasted like it had been warmed up a dozen times. Horrible & overpriced.

The Jade Garden's Lunch Deal is excellent. Apparently this offer is only between Thursday and Saturday from 12pm to 2pm. For under £20, we had 2 starters, 2 generous main courses and 2 side dishes. Brilliant food and superb service

Food was good . A little quiet for a Saturday, not sure why . Needs soft furnishings to stop the noise bouncing round the room. Bit pricey but what do expect today.. ok

If your trying to lose weight then this restaurant is for you. The food is so bland you won’t want to eat it.

Very bad experience I’ve had.. dry duck and the beef noodles were just horrible.. I’ve also waited 45 min for 3 dishes on a Sunday night.. I’d rather have them ask me to choose something else.. the chicken balls were greasy and tasted like fish.. I can tell they didn’t changed the oil in the fryers for loooong time.. very very bad I suggest to whoever wants to eat Chinese not to order from here . HORRIBLE

Unfortunately this place has gone down hill and the ‘quality’ of their food is dreadful! Gristly chicken (literally just batter), thin watered down sweet and sour, beef chewy, hardly any veg , small portions, Singapore noodles too spicy to eat, prawn crackers stale, soup thick and gloopy, lemon chicken inedible - my children devour a Chinese and we put it in the bin and went to the fish and chip shop in town. £67 down the drain for a special occasion to celebrate a tiger birth in the family!

Disappointing. The pancakes for the duck came in the duck bag and were covered in oil. Cucumber was dry. Lemon chicken - awful. Sweet and sour chicken gristly, beef with ginger and spring onion - OK, prawn crackers stale, soup thick and floppy, seaweed burnt - , rice flavourless and Singapore noodles inedible as sooooo spicy - very upset as this was to celebrate CNY and the birth of our niece who is a dragon. We won’t be back as expensive as well.

After using this restaurant for 30+ years, unfortunately today I am sounding the "never again" klaxon! Zero customer service. Zero management. Zero effort! What an absolute joke of a business. They say they open at 5pm, no one answers the phone until around 20 past. They actually told me I should have called earlier!! When I tried the second phone number on the menu, someone answered immediately, but straight away asked me to hang up as they need that line for the card machine! When I eventually did get to place and order, they were very thorough and went back through the order to check it was all correct, to only then tell me it would be a 1 hour and 20 minute wait. I duly arrived at my allotted time, when I got there there was a table of 3 and a table of 2 seated in the whole restaurant, so very quiet I would say. There was 1 other person waiting for takeaway. I gave my name and they asked for payment. I asked them to go and check if it was ready before I paid, as they have kept me waiting up to 20 minutes after paying before. They came out and said it would be another 5 minutes. I left and came back 5 minutes later, to which I was told it would be another 5 minutes. 5 minutes later it was still not ready so I told them I was done and I was leaving. A few minutes later someone called me to tell me the order was ready and I should go and pick it up. I asked to speak to someone in charge and I was passed to a lady who continually talked over me, had no interest in what had happened. I did not go back, we went to Tesco instead, bought our own food and made our own Chinese. Hopefully they will find some decent management soon, but until then I am never going back.

Food is good, however we didn’t recieve 2 of the egg fried rice which we ordered and one vegetable spring rolls. Despite the food being good, and many attempts to call them, we did no recieve an answer (37 attempts) Cheers mate, Mrs is crying.

Queuing out the door for a takeaway that is already 25 mins late. Very standard Chinese restaurant food but very very slow service.

This was my first visit to this restaurant and I’m pretty sure it will be my last. It was very cold in there which was unpleasant and also meant the food went cold before you were half way through. Indeed it was so cold my friend and I commented that it felt warmer outside when we left. The food was a mixed bag with some of our order being very tasty but some quite bland.

First visit to this restaurant. Called in on a Thursday lunchtime. We ordered off the main menu and the food was fresh and tasty and the portions were more than ample. A real gem of a restauarant and would definitely recommend and visit again when next in the area.

Went to Jade last night, the food was absolutely delicious, will definitely go back!

Family run business, owner Yun is very sweet and is always welcoming! Generous portions and food is always fresh, sometimes a long wait as they’re very busy but always worth it!

Ordered a takeaway on the 31/08/21 for dinner, at the early hours of the following day husband and I started to vomiting. We had two days of being very sick with food poison, needless to say we won't eat again from so called "Jade restaurant" anymore! PS: the food was cold, tasteless and seemed to be reheated, awful!

Never before had I had duck as deliciously prepared as at Jade Garden. Polite, attentive service. I recommend it to everyone.

A nice range of items on the menu, reasonable quantities and not badly priced. Happy with the quality too but Oh the wait! Phoned in our order, 40 minutes in advance and then waited, with half a dozen other customers, for another 30 minutes before our food appeared.

Ordered take away for collection. During COVID so not normal circumstances. Told to collect at 2045. Still in here waiting at nearly 2110. I think they wait until you get here, pay and then they start cooking it Won't be ordering from here again until things are normal.....

We tried this restaurant for the first time just before it shut for the Coronavirus lockdown and I wish we’d found it sooner. Amazing lunch with gorgeous food and friendly staff. We will be back as soon as this lockdown is over.

The food in this Chinese is so good it is such a shame that it is let down by its service!! We have given up on ordering take aways from this restaurant as every weekend you are given an hour/hour 30 mins wait which o.k if you want it you will wait however when you go to Collect you end up waiting another 30 mins at least. People are walking out on their orders, ques are down the restaurant it’s a complete shambles!!!!

Really good food and very friendly staff

This was one of the worst restaurant experiences i have ever had. The manager was off-hand, the serving staff appeared untrained. 15 minutes before drink order taken. Queues for take-away stretched nearly to the door. Three starters ordered appeared one by one over a 20 minute period. Butterfly king prawns arrived in greasy thick white batter. Ribs were nice but not what were ordered. Gave up on next course after another half hour and so asked for bill and main course to be a take-out. Chased after another 15 minutes at bar counter saying we'd only pay for what we had. Ate at home, food quality awful, not what we'd ordered and so most went in the trash. There was not one thing good about this experience.

Let down by manager/ owner. Food lovely young staff helpful and friendly, good house wine but the terrible attitude of the woman in charge will ensure we won’t return. At its best average!!

My food was horrific. Dry duck, mouldy beef and chicken. Chow mein was crunchy. And spare ribs were just grease. I want my money back.

Food was nice. However it took 3hours for us to be served your starters and duck course. Even tho we were in the restaurant first. All the other tables were served thier course/s and finished before us.

It seems to me that people only want to come to trip-advisor if they have something bad to say, which would explain the lower-star reviews that this place receives. I say this because when I visited on a Sunday evening ( expecting it to be fairly quiet ),nearly the entire restaurant was full and there was such a lovely, positive atmosphere about the place. I was immediately greeted by a lovely young man who offered us the choice of a table in the corner or another table which a group of four had just vacated, which he promptly cleaned for us. We ordered some drinks and they arrived very quickly, and we then asked some questions about the menu ( due to some dietary requirements and preferences) , which the waiter was able to answer very easily and which resulted in him changing the ingredients of dishes completely to fit our needs ( something I always see as a good sign in a restaurant! ). Throughout the course of our meal a number of people did come to collect their takeaways, but it didn’t seem to affect the service quality of our table or any of the other seemingly very happy tables around us, and if anything that must show the quality of the food. As we began eating we were all unanimously blown away by the amazing quality of the dishes we had ordered, and we even heard other tables near us making similar comments. Throughout this the same waiter was tentatively making sure everything was to our liking and ensuring that none of the tables felt disregarded.Overall it was a truly fantastic meal and I would highly recommend this place to anybody in the area. I would also urge people that do go and that do enjoy their meal to just leave a small review saying how much they enjoyed it, because it seems like it could really help this place out.We will definitely be coming back!

Disgusting!! I wish I'd rather opted for a dry slice of toast. The food was cold, bland, no flavour, dry and no resemblance to Chinese Cantonese food I've had before. If you fancy a Chinese takeaway and live in the Saffron Walden area stop for a second and order a Thai from Ananta in Wendens Ambo instead.

Despite the exterior appearance the inside was smart and the welcome friendly.The food was excellent, especially the set menus, which offered interesting and a variety of dishes.It was quite quiet, with only a few tables occupied on our Tuesday visit, but there was a constant stream of customers collecting take out food.My first visit, but a return is a definite!

Poor service. Our starters came at different times. We had to wait for over an hour for our main course due to the fact that there were so many people collecting takeaways. The staff serving us were very friendly and apologetic. Probably won’t go there again, certainly not on a Saturday night.

Would recommend booking for a Saturday night a the Jade Garden can get very busy (especially with people collecting takeaways.) Staff are friendly and helpful. Food is well cooked and served promptly. It always looks attractive. Prices are excellent and portion size is very good.

The food was average. Had to wait over an hour for the main course. Will not be going there again. This used to be a great restaurant.

We had a pleasant meal, in a nice, cosy restaurant, which at points was quite loud, but this wasn’t the fault of staff, just regular customers. The staff and manager were all run off their feet it seemed, and there was no organisation in regard to who get their food or drinks first, as we waited a good forty five minutes before we managed to get the attention of a young waitress. During this wait three other tables had arrived and had some food and drinks ordered and delivered, and many takeaway orders had been taken out, so we wrote our own order out and gave it to the waitress when we got her attention for our drinks. The food was clearly made in house, and I won’t fault it, some dishes were very tasty, but our wait was really long and too long considering how many staff there were. Perhaps they need some delegation of duties, to help the manager out as it seemed very ad hoc.

It is such a shame because with some better organisation and customer service this place could be much better. My mum and I went for a belated Chinese New Year meal (she was brought up in Hong Kong so it’s a really special occasion for her) We had a reservation for 7pm so arrived then. There was no one to greet us on arrival so we approached the bar where there were several staff members attending to the takeaway customers - eventually we got shown our table. The initial service was very attentive, we had a few questions about the menu, which unfortunately did not help us get what we wanted! Our order was taken and then we waited, and waited. My mums drink was forgotten about for which our waiter was very apologetic. After about 50 minutes still waiting for our food to arrive, I asked how long it would be and were told it shouldn’t be long, it arrived about 10 minutes later. We had order the first appetisers and they were pretty delicious - we were so hungry by this point would have probably eaten anything! Our plates were cleared and then...again we waited...and waited. We tried to get the waiting staff’s attention but no luck (by this point our neighbouring table who had come in half an hour after us had ordered, eaten, paid and was leaving) so I went to the bar and asked the person doing the takeaways how long it would be - they checked with someone who seemed like the manager and she said a few minutes. I sat back down and sure enough some of our mains arrived...however the sweet and sour chicken was not what we ordered, it was chicken deep fried in batter. Like a chicken doughnut. With no sauce etc. The ‘Buddhist monk’ vegetables consisted mostly of tofu and mushrooms and very little vegetables and the duck was extremely fatty and a little tasteless. We were ready to pay, but again we waited and waited for someone to attend to us so decided to go to the bar to pay. We told the manager about our wait and that we were disappointed with the level of service and the food and she advised us that it’s better to phone up in advance and order...clearly I have misunderstood what going out for a meal means my whole life! She also said that they were very busy that evening (a Saturday night) and that it’s a very small kitchen.With all due respect, if you cannot get food out in under an hour to your tables because your kitchen is too small, maybe don’t take so many covers, or get a bigger kitchen!?!The bill came to £45 for 2 ppl...which for what we had ordered didn’t seem right, so we asked for an itemised bill and she simply brushed it off saying it was the drinks that were expensive...we had 3 between us, one of which we waited half an hour for. Eventually she gave us 10% off the bill. The waiting staff were clearly very embarrassed by this attitude.I am really disappointed in the level of service, the mismanagement of tables, the lack of attentiveness (the waiting staff never checked in that everything was ok and we had ask them several times where our order was) It’s clear that the waiting staff are trying their hardest and were very apologetic but it’s the management and over all customer care that is abysmal. Takeaways clearly take priority over sit down customers.We had come for a special occasion, we rarely go out for meals as my dear mum is a careworker and the pay in minimal so it’s a rare treat, one which on this occasion was a real disappointment.It is such a shame as most of these issues could so easily be remedied! Jade garden please start listening to your customers and reading the bad reviews on here, this is no way to run a business or treat your clients.

Ordered takeaway from here tonight, took into account the fact it was Valentine’s Day and was told the wait time for collection would be an hour. Pretty long wait time for collection but we ordered anyway. Arrived after an hour and 10 minutes to be told we had to wait a further 10. Went to Waitrose, done some shopping, came back 15 minutes later and was told again it would be a further 15 minutes. Sat and waited, still no food. Asked again where it was and was told they were still cooking our chow mein, which we saw was served to several tables during our wait. Eventually got our food with hardly any apology from the staff or goodwill gesture/money off etc. Got home and EVERYTHING we ordered was cold so no idea why we had to wait so long when our food wasn’t even remotely warm. Had to microwave our dinner just to be able to eat it. Only thing that was boiling was our blood. Furious.

I enjoy the food normally , but tonight I ordered chilly shredded crispy beef, unfortunately it was very dry and no flavour. Normally it comes with chilly sauce. Otherwise great place to eat. Great service .Highly recommend .

We ordered a takeaway from Jade Garden on a Saturday night in January. It was so difficult to place our order! Spoke to 3 different people before they could understand what we wanted! First person warned us it would be an hour but by the time we finally placed our order with the third person we were told collect in 40 mins. Picked it up no problems.

Best Chinese in Saffron Walden. Very friendly staff. Food always top draw.

A lovely restaurant in the heart of Saffron Walden. Really lovely staff. Great menu and lots of choice. Loads of free parking nearby. You must visit.

We came here between Christmas and New Years and had a really lovely meal. The crispy duck was delicious and the staff were very friendly. It’s not the cheapest meal in town but it’s definitely worth it quality-wise.

Having eaten in last time with awful experience but seeing the take out service apparently be super we tried that. Order taken. Money taken come back in an hour. Hour 20 later we get our food. The hottest thing was the delivery driver....my husband! It was cold and nasty and WE WON'T try it again. Twice is strike out. Get your act together. Fingers crossed we are not I'll.

The last time we are at The Jade Garden a few years ago, I remember it was pretty good. However, last night was a completely different experience.

I tried this restaurant a couple of months ago and wasn’t overly pleased, I decided to give them a second chance, however after ordering a very simple dish (beef in black bean sauce) I found the sauce to be very watery and the beef very tough, such a shame but we won’t be coming back !!

Birthday celebration - big mistake- Shambles - flat mixers in with our drinks waited ages for food and when it did come out some had there main course before others had starters - wrong orders some duplicated - no itemised bill so had no idea if we had been charged for duplicated dishes - no card payment facility which we had not been advised of when ordering ......... the poor young lads serving were like frightened rabbits and just couldn’t cope

We had a takeaway from here yesterday and sadly it was the worst Chinese I've ever had. Crispy chilli beef was tasteless and chewy, sweet and sour chicken balls were grey and looked like they were reheated from the day before. One dish wasn't the one we ordered. Thank god we ordered a Satay sauce to pour over everything to get through it. Also seemed expensive compared to others in Walden. We had leftovers but decided to bin it all.. Which I'd NEVER do. All in all.. Pretty awful. Sorry.

Not much to say other than awful! Most of it went in the bin. The chicken balls were almost the size of a scotch egg but a darker shade of brown.

Out for a meal with friends, very slow service although the staff were lovely ... Just seemed like it was their first day!

Decent food and service but new decor makes it very noisy

Not great at all. Have a pizza! To a large town where restaurants have higher competition and therefore driving up the quality of food!

The interior is tired and could do with a bit of a refurb. Our table felt like it was on a hill. The service was OK although the staff seemed inexperienced and nervous, they were very polite though.

The takeaway service at the Jade Garden is Terrible .Despite being very expensive now We have on more than one occasion returned home to find our order compleatly cold and having to give the microwave a workout to heat it up to make it edible ,But even worse than this after phoning to make them aware and being asked to wait a moment while waiting on the phone I could actually hear the staff in the back ground saying that they could not understand this as I waited for my order and saying that they weren't sure how to deal with this .After a while I was told that I could have 20% off my next order which if I ordered the same again would mean about a £1.20 discount for a meal which was quite frankly very disappointing .Unfortunately can't give no stars on the rating but wished I had had some beans on toast at home and saved me the disappointment and anger at the service .

After a very good night out on the town, myself and dear friends visited this fine establishment for a bloody good take away. We were greeted by 2 very lovely ladies, Kendra and Ailie who took our orders and served us drinks while we waited. Then engaged in very friendly chit chat which made our evening. they have a really good selection

Me and my partner arrived at 10pm were asked to have starter and main together as they wanted to close early, rushed out disappointing food , forgot drinks and then proceeded to climb around the restaurant whilst we were trying to eat putting up Christmas dec’s and lights !!! Most unwelcoming will think twice before returning!!! Disappointed.

We had never been before. We ordered a takeaway from what appeared to be an extensive and delicious looking menu. However, upon returning home, there was one item missing and the prawn toast was inedible. The prawn crackers were pleasant as was the chicken curry, but the duck with pancakes were disappointing. Shall look elsewhere next time.

popped in for early evening supper. staff are extremely friendly. food was ok. the half duck was overdone so a lot of it was left. the chilli chicken was interesting. egg fried rice was the highlight but surely that's hard to screw up. listen its all relative and what used to and if this is all you have known I am sure it will be seejn as a good meal and I wouldn't not visit due to this review but had better elsewhere (albeit the other Chinese in town didn't look that inviting!)

I ordered a takeaway from om Jade Garden for the first time in fifteen years, having just moved back to town. It's a fair bit more expensive than it was back then, but that's inflation (and lack of decent competition) for you. What's less understandable is why everything felt miserly - from the single tablespoonful of hoisin sauce that only afforded a small scrape on each pancake to the popcorn-sized chicken balls and lack of any vegetables other than beansprouts with only minimal sauce (lots of oil though!) in the chow mein. The noodles were also, bafflingly, very obviously spaghetti noodles rather than Chinese noodles, making the chow mein taste like a weird hybrid Italian dish. And it used to be when you spent nigh on £20 and collected it yourself you got a few prawn crackers thrown in...

Always empty, the food isn't the best, the ambience is not good but that depends on the crowd you go with. Staff don't seem to be very happy to be there.

El personal hablaba inglés, así que sólo el chef fue lo suficientemente amable para venir a nuestra mesa cuando le preguntamos, para explicar uno de los platos, que en mandarín, junto con pedir rápidamente varios otros.
