Tanoshii in Uttlesford

The atmosphere service and food was top notch. Probably one of the best Chinese I have had in a long time. Will definitely be back with the family. A real gem in Great Dunmow. Good portion sizes and very flavoursome.

We have been to the Sunday 'Eat as much as you like' sitting twice now. Each time, the quality of the food have been exceptional and the staff kind and patient as we order round the table.

What a delightful find, located along the Main Street at Great Dunmow. Run by a Penang guy, restaurant serves mostly South East Asian cuisine. 10% off for take out but worth a visit. Small entrance so look out for the Tanoshii signboard. Public parking at the rear. Nasi Goreng was quite good, so was the Yaki Udon! Must visit if you’re around the Felsted, Dunmow area in Essex

Big white plates on the table and you have to ask for chop sticks… most of the menu is standard fayre for your sweet and sour chicken balls and egg fried rice eaten with spoons and fork clientele… That said the panko prawns & iron plate teriyaki steak was good, but I don’t want to eat it off of an ikea dinner plate! Would be fine for a take away

Sadly this place has gone downhill service-wise - the prices have gone up. The gentleman as mentioned in previous posts should not be allowed to wait on tables. We had our plates virtually thrown at us - this was after seeing him empty bins and not washing his hands. The hors' d'eovoures were tepid- we were asked if would like starter and main together as they were closing in two hours... The restaurant was empty, cold and bright, very un-atmospheric We arrived at 6.45 pm - they closed at 9 pm. All staff were ready to leave, our arrival was simply an inconvenience. We paid the bill including the optional 10% service charge. I didn't want to refuse to pay as quite frankly couldn't bear the forthcoming confrontation! Check the prices online before you choose to dine.

This was our first visit to Tanoshii and we were both looking forward to it as it was Christmas eve. The restaurant advised us that they were only doing the set menus which we were fine with the drinks and starters arrived in good time but then we had to wait an hour for the duck and about 20 minutes for the mains. There wrre issues with the card machine and we are not sure if we will return as first impressions do not encourage a return

Always a pleasant time here. The screens could do with coming down now but overall a good place to dine on or take away.

We arrived to a poor greeting in a restaurant with no atmosphere. We hadn’t finished the first course when a very grumpy man, who clearly didn’t want to be there, removed our plates. Second course the noodles smelt burnt and the chicken was very overcooked and hard. We were never asked once during our meal if everything was ok and had to take cutlery from another table. Was constantly watched as the only people in there and asked 3 times during our second course if we were finished and had only been in there an hour. Felt like they were waiting to go home. Won’t be going back and will not recommend.

Very nice food . The service could be a bit friendlier .. we had a really grumpy man but it didn’t spoil our night .

The meal is always great but on this occasion our waiter was not the best as he was very abrupt when ordering and did not feel very welcoming in his attitude.

Possibly the worst service I've ever experienced! The writer clearly didn't want to be there last night and apart from a couple of grunts, didn't communicate at all. The food was over-cooked and there was no atmosphere. Very disappointing.

I haven’t been here since it was called Dunmow’s Chinese Garden or something like that. It’s been years so I can’t say if it’s still good or not but when Kim was running the joint the food could not be beat.

We had the Sunday Eat as much as you like menu i.e.£25 p.p. Plus 10% discretionary service charge . My wife and had visited before ,last year ?and noticed that the price had risen by 10% We thoroughly enjoyed our different choices,as we went through the courses on the extensive menu,as it was all perfectly cooked . We were there for 2 hours and took our time to enjoy ,along with a nice bottle of Chardonnay priced at £26 . The service was excellent and delivered promptly after ordering our choices as we went . An all round lovely experience, I take it that the lady who greeted us and served behind the bar was an owner ,who was very pleasant and welcoming ,the only downside was that the gentleman and the two younger waitresses who served us ,could have made an effort to smile a little when serving ,not only us ,but at all the other tables as well,as they gave off the impression that they didn’t enjoy their vocation ? But as the food and service was so good ,we accepted to pay the 10% service charge . Will certainly visit again as a special treat ,and recommend to others.

Food was lovely. Waitresses were helpful but waiter was just walking about and made me feel uncomfortable.

Service excellent menu varied.

Food was just great. Surprisingly service was very fast. Nice ambiance. Courteous staff. Changed the cooking from non-veg to veg of the desired dish. Malaysian and Thai were very good. Chinese may have got burnt while frying, so just ok.

We went here for the Sunday all you can eat. When we sat at the table there was a bowl of prawn crackers waiting for us. We shared four starters including the vegetable spring rolls, chicken gyoza, crispy seaweed and edamame. The food came out fairly quickly and when we’d finished we were asked what we wanted next. For mains we had vegetable tempura, shredded duck, chicken balls and crispy chilli beef. All of the food was delicious and we wish we could have had room for more! All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. We will definitely return to eat here again.

Lovely takeaway food. Sunday is buffet for £20 per person... Lovely and great value.

My Husband booked us a table online, we was so excited to get a night to ourselves without the kids so couldn't wait to go out for dinner! Got to the restaurant to be told that there wasn't a table for us even though he had booked it online. Massively disappointed!! The lady did say sorry but that did little to help. Shouldn't take online bookings if your not able to actually seat customers. Very disappointed. Can't comment on the food as didn't get to eat there. Wouldn't go back it's put us off.

Return visit from a few weeks ago having had a great takeaway. This time we were ordering for a party of six. Prices are reasonable, all the food was excellent, especially the chicken massaman curry which everyone commented on. Good portion sizes and plenty of prawns and meat. Keep it up guys.

I visited late one Sunday afternoon and was amazed by how busy the place was. Clearly very popular. My issue lies with the lack of courtesy paid to a single diner (by no means up unusual), best illustrated when I asked for a coffee at the end of the meal. "No free coffee!" the harassed waiter informed me curtly. I didn't ask for a "free" coffee, just a coffee! The coffee duly arrived with milk and sugar, but no teaspoon. I had to ask twice for a teaspoon - one waitress completely ignored me. I paid £30 for the meal, to which 10 per cent was added for service. A pity, as the food was good, but I don't think I'd go back.

Turned up at 8pm to a half empty restaurant asked for a table to be asked if we booked to which we said no. Another guy then runs over and says we can’t have a table because we haven’t booked and the manger doesn’t want anymore tables even though restaurant half empty. Very rude staff and happy to turn away custom clearly

Furious with Tanoshii’s new “delivery partner” gogetters! They have been providing a delivery service for Tanoshii for 5-6 months now and continue to charge people a hefty charge for a small takeaway. Purchased three items on Tanoshii’s website as I was working late this evening. The site then promptly sends you to the Go-getters page for delivery. the bill came to £22 plus change and I was charged another £6 for delivery!!! Never again Tanoshii! 😡 I will stay with Happy Garden in future……..

Take out on a busy Friday night. Restaurant was almost full which was good to see. We ordered two starters, 1/4 duck, three mains and rice dishes for £44 which we considered good value for two people. The food was excellent esp the massaman chicken dish. Portion sizes were very good and the quantity of meat/king prawns in the dish was surprisingly high. There is enough left for breakfast! We highly recommend this Chinese. Staff are friendly and cannot fault it from point of order onward. Keep it up guys it will pay dividends as you are the only good Chinese in the area.

It was our first visit to the restaurant and it won’t be the last. The staff are all so friendly, attentive and welcoming which was lovely. The food was very very nice and there was a fantastic choice of dishes to choose from. My children really enjoyed their food which was a bonus as they can be fussy. There was a nice atmosphere along with the delicious food.

Service from the waiters was excellent. Food was very good. Unfortunately the kitchen staff did not get the order right. We had to send the waiters back three times to get everything we ordered.

We were a party of 8 and booked our reservation online for 8.30pm on Friday night. Upon arrival we were met with a fierce looking waiter insisting they have to close at 10pm. Our meal was so rushed , constantly reminded we have to be out by 10 o clock . Two things here- please allow your diners time to enjoy their meal and maybe Let them know when booking of your closing time . We also felt the young waiters and waitresses were exploited to some extent . To send these young people over to constantly hurry us up is very unfair . They remained polite and helpful, unlike the managers. The food was ok this time - hard to enjoy when so rushed . Disappointing visit .

I ordered a takeaway from them online, made payment and waited for tracking update of delivery. The app they use is called Go Getters. Aptly name because the go get your money and then do sweet FA. I called the restaurant an hour later and the man that answered was rude and dismissive and didnt really care. He took my number and said he would call me back with a solution. He never called back and go getters still have not refunded my money. DO NOT ORDER A TAKEAWAY HERE!

The food service and price is excellent. We always book and we are always greeted as if we are family.

Was looking for somewhere to eat found this place! I only can say it is AMAZING!!

We were told about this place by a friend so thought we would give it a try. We went on a Sunday for the Eat as much as you like menu. You order from the menu and they bring the dishes to your table. All the food was very nice, fairly small portions but that allows you to try a wider selection. We have been twice now and will definately go there again.

It's been quite a few years since we last ate here so I thought I'd book for fathers day. The staff were excellent, no waiting around to order drinks or food. We chose the all you can eat menu. Excellent value for money. Every dish freshly cooked and so tasty. Will definitely be returning soon. Highly recommend Tanoshii.

Pancakes rolls were disgusting prawn toast was very very greasy soggy and chewy chicken noodles were spicy but hardly any veg and the chicken was so weird I had to spit it outDuck was tasteless but not too tough pancakes stogy plum sauce tasteless Rice was alright.,Will I ever order here again absolutely not. I do not understand how poeple hope to have a successful business with such awful food

The experience was very concerning. Food was lovely. But badly served. When arriving and seated, order for drinks was taken, then 2 more staff came to ask if we had been see too. After placing order, my order was incorrect. So had to ask them to change the order. There is a buffet you can order eat as much as you want on a Sunday. Or another menu. When receiving the bill, a service charge is added. Pls make sure you check your bill. There is no where written that the company will charge for this. We had asked for it to be removed. Was not happy with the service provided. I sorry to say. Thank you to the chef for the lovely food.

I was here with a friend on Easter Saturday (16-Apr-2022). They were fully booked but managed to squeeze us in 5.45 pm. Service was friendly and efficient. Ambience was good. We had one of the set menus. Food was excellent....tasty, cooked with fresh ingredients and portion sizes were good. We couldn't finish it all so took the rest away for later. Would be happy to eat here again!

Very good Asian restaurant. A mix of Chinese and Japanese Greeks are served. All of them tasted very good without exception. The staff was also very friendly.

Very long wait between courses, we were there for 3 hours! Told we couldn't order desert of have the complimentary tea/coffee because they were closing. Food was ok. Staff were not the friendliest.

A group of 6 of us book a table and we’re very much looking forward to a meal here. Unfortunately, our experience here was poor to say the least. To put into context, we came on Sunday at 6.30pm and went for the ‘all you can eat’ menu. Firstly, we all ordered what we wanted from the starters. Portions were not individual to the person who ordered it but was put on a plate in the middle of the large round table, making hard to reach anything. The portions didn’t reflect what we had ordered. For example, all 6 of us ordered prawns toast but only 4 little prawn toast triangle came out. The service was POOR! We were kept waiting ages between courses resulting in us still being there at 9pm. It was then implied that it was time to leave. We asked if we could order coffee. The young and clearly inexperience girl told us they were closing! So they took for ever ordering our courses and here they were, throwing us out. We made a big deal of this and she stormed off to speak to someone and said they had to boil the kettle! She then returned with 6 coffees! We only wanted one but she had not bothered to ask us who wanted coffee. She was rather annoyed at this. The bill arrived and we nearly fell off our chairs! £305 😂. On further inspection, we saw that we had been charged for 12 meals (we were only 6) and 5 Merlots (we only had 3). We were told that they had not charged us for the coffees either- well I should hope not! I must say, I will never return here again. Everything was too much for them snd when they clearly made errors, we were made to feel as if it was our fault. Tanoshii, you have just lost 6 customers who will undoubtedly share this experience with others. I’d rather spend my hard earned money where it’s appreciated!

Meal ok, service not Happy. Set priced for meal. Eat what you like of the menu their was 6 people in all but only four of choice came for 6 people so we had to ask for more. And you only had a certain time to eat your meal that you ordered, as it closes at nine pm. The bill came up over £300 which we went into shock as the set meal was £19.95 for each person that's without your drink and only 2 people are drinking wine as the other only had soft drinks. The 3 glasses are at one size. But they put on the bill for 5. So from over £300 the bill now stood at £150...very disappointed in this restaurant.

Have eaten in the restaurant and had a lovely meal and recommend to many friends and family . After that order a take away and had half a duck missing. Didn’t mention anything as by the time we got it home the place was then closed. Went back again and ordered a takeaway as we enjoy the food first time around. Again another dish missing, sweet and sour pork. Called and mentioned it to them that a dish was missed off and there was no customer service, nothing!!! The rest of the meal wasn’t great very dry, only one good dish out of the order. Certainly won’t recommend again. Two mistakes too many and no service.

This has to be the best restaurant in Dunmow. Food is fantastic, service brilliant and excellent value for money. Family favourites include tea smoked chicken, soft shell crab and salt and pepper squid. Can’t recommend highly enough.

This was our first time visiting Tanoshii after 1 year planning because of lockdown. The food was delicious, fresh, very tasty and everything so so good. We managed to try almost everything we wanted on the menu. The service was super fast and e everyone very kind there. This is our favourite Chinese from now on :) . Worth a try ! I recommend 100%

Great find. Been a couple of times and really enjoyed the quality and selection of dishes. It's great to have a choice of Chinese, Thai and Malaysian dishes in one place.

Totally a hidden gem. Never had food from here before. Ordered last minute as our cooker broke down! Amazing food. Best chicken balls we've ever had. A little bit more expensive than some other places I've eaten locally. But worth every penny. They will be our new goto when we want to get Chinese food.

Best tasting chinese I've had in a long time! Big portions of rice and chow mein and delivery was quick with food still hot. Definitely recommend.

Very disappointing. Food was cold when it arrived. Duck pancakes were crispy and the duck not much better. Very dry. The dumplings were burnt on the bottom and tasted charred rather than anything else. Lemon chicken and shredded beef would have been good if it wasn’t almost stone cold. We have only ever used this Chinese in Dunmow in the seven years we have lived here but will be trying other local Chinese offerings in the future.

Possibly the worst example of Chinese takeout food I have ever experienced. Chicken Szechuan drowned in a hideous cornflour mix and everything over salted to the point of inedible. Egg fried rice with nothing else but egg in it, not even a single piece of spring onion. Ribs were poorly cut and full of gristle and again, swimming in an embarrassment of cornflour, salt and MSG. Monumentally dreadful.
