This place has a bad rep locally. But i moved here only a year ago and it is my favourite. I guess the chef has changed. The curry sauce its top notch!!

Had chinese from there on Sunday apparently new chef well I had food poisoning from there had to go to doctors Monday still off work now left with bloating and needing to be close to toilet still today and it is Thursday avoid at all costs if you know what is good for you I have also reported them they deserve to be closed down new chef never ever again

Of 3 dishes, I had to throw 2 away as the meat was rotten and smelled awful (ribs and duck). I note from other reviewers that they also have to throw most of their food away, so this clearly isn't the exception.

Great local Chinese. Food great, its busy so I always collect. Lovely staff

Use this regularly and always had a great meal , decent portions not over stuffed with bit n bobs to pack it out like some places and vey reasonably priced. Meal has always compared to restaurant that does take away

Went to pick up order as over a hour for delivery. Picked up to return home, duck was cremated and inedible. They first of all moaned as I asked for everything to be redone, there response was "what just because of the duck" not appreciating we wanted all the food together hot. having to drive back there to recollect. Handed original order back and returned home. Duck was still once again inedible and disgusting. Will never return and will advise anyone else to go elsewhere.

Always really enjoy the food and over the years have tried a variety of their dishes.

Whilst ordering the delivery, the lady taking the order moaned that I wanted to pay by card and not cash. When the delivery turned up an hour late, everything was dry, cold and flavourless. Rang the takeaway back to tell them this, only to be told that’s how it comes, it’s supposed to be like that. You can probably guess I wouldn’t recommend Lucky Star

Lucky star? More like 5 stars! Really lovely food, we had spring rolls, mushroom rice noodles, bean curd in black bean sauce, chips, honey ribs and chicken in breadcrumbs. Was all really tasty and we planned on saving some for tomorrow but we ate all of it, whoops! Only suggestion I would make is to make people aware of wait times and be more honest. Driver told us on arrival that he was the only one working tonight which is why our delivery was half an hour later than what we were initially told (1hr 15 rather than 45 minutes). Most people are happy to wait if they know how long they are waiting for!

I will never use this Chinese again . Food arrived 1hr 30 min after I phoned the order through and I was stone cold

Been using the Lucky Star for the last 14 years and the standard has always been high with well tasty food being supplied

Over a 2 hour wait and delivery driver came to the door with his hood up and his hands down his trousers. Must of had long arms as his trousers were barely above his knees. Only order from here if you enjoy long waits, cold food and disappointment.

If I could give less than 1 star I would Worst take away for miles Absolutely terrible experience Turned up 3 hours late Food was just warm so needed reheating Pork dish was just water Chicken was raw and thrown straight in the bin 1 dish was missing Chowmein and rice dishes were made of concrete and had to be dissected, if you need a new drive way you know who to go to If you want to taste food then please don't bother, Chicken balls were quite good though! Duck was just bones Delivery driver dropped the food off and didn't speak because of the pure disappointment Please avoid at all costs, if you want something with taste please purchase a kershaws roast dinner and heat it with a match stick, will save you a substantial amount of money Waiting for the food poisoning to hit in a couple of hours!!! Honest review, only visiting so feel for the locals, I'm sure this will be out of business soon so shouldn't be a long term issue for the surrounding area. Kind regards J

If I could give less than 1 star I would. The food was 3 hours late and didnt include everything we had paid for. The chicken was undercooked and pink, the rice and noodles were stuck together so you had 1 lump or 2. The company lied multiple times and kept telling me the food was on it's way even though it wasn't, they also mentioned they have had a lot of complaints, i am not surprised as they have no level of customer service and sarcastic/ rude staff. I feel sorry for the residents of Great Dunmow for having this Chinese in it's area, you would be better off buying a ready meal, throwing it on the floor, and then eating that.

Those has got to be worst thing I have ever eaten. Not only is it burnt all of it smells like off fish. The satay chiken is laying in oil , and curry sauce has actually got burnt scrapping from a pan floating in it . Trying to contact back and it cuts out over and over again Disgusting service

A £10 for a tiny portion of chicken fried rice and what was meant to be three spring rolls turned out to be 6 pieces of gunk with no spring roll filling. Staff have very bad attitude will not be going again I would write 0 if I could.

Just had a take away from Lucky Star it was terrible!! The food tasted full of grease and we had to throw it away in the end. All you could taste is the grease not the food. Have always gone to Lucky Star in the past but never again. Not one dish was nice. 😡Bad. Would not even give it to our dogs!

Crispy beef delicious. Chicken balls, crispy & full of chicken best we've eaten in a long time.

Spent £60 on an over cooked meal for the family. Would not recommend.better to have eaten the cat food than what we had. Absolutely rubbish

The food (Chinese) seemed mixed with Indian there was a very odd taste to some of the food

Hoisin sauce was a hard blob with watery edges. Chilli spicy noodles had half a chilli in the whole dish and tasteless. Shame as used to be good.

This was second time we have ordered from lucky star the first time the spring rolls were burnt but the rest of the food ordered was ok second time yet again spring rolls burnt and the rest of our order was all over done and rice and noodle was very stodgy bearing in mind it was a Monday evening so was not a weekend when very busy ! We never order from here again !

Very good food and service, 10/10 would recommend. Ordered a mix of dishes including certain dishes tailored to meet specific dietary requirement. The food arrived at the predicted time, everyone enjoyed the dishes they chose. The chow mein, rice, rice noodles and accompanying curries were all delicious and good portion sizes. The prawn toast as a starter was suitable for sharing too. Will order from here again for sure.

Terrible, terrible takeaway. Waited for over an hour and forty five minutes for delivery to arrive. Food was cold and undercooked. Never ordering from this place again!

Have been using this takeaway for years and have never had a bad experience yet. I call from Thaxted 6.5miles away, and by the time I get there my takeaway is ready. Always a cheery welcome from the girls. Very generous portions and a good price. Recommend the Kung Po Chicken and the Chicken Chow Mein....

Since has long as I’ve lived near this Chinese takeaway it’s always cooked amazing and the staff are always helpful from ordering on the phone to either collecting or delivery.

We have been using the Lucky Star for years, we were in the past satisfied with their food and service. For us, this place has gone so down hill, getting almost every order wrong, then having to phone in and complain once home with food missing and wrong dishes. They always offer a small credit as a gesture of goodwill. The problem is our goodwill ran out when when I went into the Lucky Star and the lady behind the counter was rude, saying the credit was too much, sounding like we were taking advantage of them!!!! What a shame................a real sweet and sour experience.

Ordered a takeaway. Cost £60 and that was with me picking up. The platic containers they use are half the size of any other Chinese i have ever used. And they was half full. Had to return twice because they missed part of the order. Gone really down hill over the lat few years VERY POOR.

I use the Lucky Star maybe once a month. I find the food to be good value and perfectly acceptable quality for local punter type Chinese - does exactly what it says on the tin. They are always super busy - for a reason, food is well priced and tasty.

Food is mediocre. Was told delivery would be 1 hr but took 2 hrs, on a Thursday night! Even called a couple of times to chase, the staff are rude and unhelpful.

Never use them they are an absolute joke charged us for items we didn't order and didn't deliver what we had ordered overcharged us £9.80 and when we called to complain they didn't care and refused to deliver correct items or refund. Took two and a half hours to deliver.

Got hung up on numerous times when ordering. Took over two hours to deliver after chasing up. Order was delivered with wrong dishes and missing dishes overcharged called to complain service was awful nobody wanted to put it right or deliver correct order or issue refund. Will definitely be ordering elsewhere next time. Terrible experience from start to finish beware!!

I highly rate this Chinese Takeaway. Unarguably the best in Dunmow and surrounding area. I have tried several alternative dishes from the menu all have been consistently pleasant. Hard to find a takeaway this good with such rapid delivery and outstanding tasting food.

So to start the service ok the food however was absolutely shockingly awful. We got a special chow mein which had no meat other than pork lunchon meat! Paid full price for half or mostly empty pots. The rice was disgusting so was the chow mein. The chicken dish was nice but there was barely any there. Not enough for a child let alone 2 adults. Far more expensive than any other Chinese in dunmow for minuscule amount of food that mostly tastes bland and a bit stale! Avoid at all costs second time of using this Chinese both times have been a dire experience the first time they wouldn’t stop calling us became very rude down the phone after getting us mixed up for someone else. Saying we had not picked up our Chinese even though they delivered it too us?? Very rude with how they spoke to us had more then 10 calls even though I kept saying they were mistaken they just became even more rude including telling us to F off at one point! We though maybe that was a off day and have them a a go 6 months or so later but no never again!

Food tasted like it had been reheated and still arrived cold. Egg fried rice was pretty much just rice. The duck was dry and tasteless. My husband actually took two mouthfuls and left the table... And he's not a fussy eater!! Chow mein was oily and bland. Wouldn't recommend. Only ordered from there becuase our local is closed due to covid 19. Wouldn't order again.

Don't go pudding style rice tasteless noodles

Ordered on a Wednesday so didn’t expect delivery to be too long. Arrived in 30 mins and food was hot and tasty.

It is some time since I have purchased a Take Away from the Lucky Star as the last time I purchased a meal it was far below the standard of what the food was years ago when it was well worth the 22 mile round trip to purchase an excellent Take Away which we always looked forward to.Last night I fancied a Take Away for Chinese New Year as my wife is Chinese and thought I would give the Lucky Star another go in the hope the poor meal that I had not enjoyed last time was a one off. Much to our dissapointment the meal was again below average lacking flavour, the amount of meat and prawns in the portions was very small so alas that will be my last visit to the Lucky Star. Fortunately there is a lot of choice these days and the Take Aways providing flavoursome food with generous portions are the winners with the customers.

The taste of the food is excellent (when hot) but the process of ordering and the delivery is below poor. I give them 5/5 for food but 0/5 for the time they say it will arrive, when you chase and they say “it has just left” but then the delivery person tells you otherwise. (If they were just honest you could be prepared). Today was 50 minutes late and the food turned up Luke warm. Definitely have their food but collect it yourself. If you go for delivery it is pot luck on time (never early) and food temperature.

Placed an order over the phone and was told it would be 1- 1/2hrs for delivery. It actually took 2 hrs. Once it did arrive the food was actually quite nice. I would have given it very good for the rating had e delivery been quicker.

Went in had pancakes rolls (1 portion=2 rolls) sat down on a busy night thougjt i was going to be there for ages, nope very quick and they apologise for the wait and the pancake rolls were delicious

£3.50 delivery to village just outside Dunmow meant the courier did not get a tip. The local Indian delivers free if order is over £15 and their food always arrives hot. Our Chinese arrived luke warm and needed reheating. The food is delivered in plastic containers which melt at a fairly low heat in the oven so the food had to be decanted onto numerous china plates to reheat as there were too many dishes to use a microwave. The food was well cooked and looked good but was lacking in flavour, spices and seasoning. Hence the 'average' rating. The staff were friendly and efficient in our experience and delivery was bang on the requested time on a Friday.

First time of ordering from here..soon as they answered the phone it sounded like chaos! ‘Hold the line please’ then just constant talking and shouting going on. Just casually waiting on the line like helloooo..finally they’d then come back to take the order to then only get distracted again! Finally ordered the food..wait wasn’t too, too bad for a Saturday night but they’d missed a dish off. Called back and they said they’re really busy so would we like a credit for next time we order..no sorry, we want our food! Said they was short on drivers so would get it to us as soon as. Literally about 2 hours after first receiving our first order, the other dish then arrived!!! Really poor form as the food was actually nice but the service is a real let down so I’ll now be thinking twice before ordering from there again!

We order a takeaway was told 45-60 minutes on the phone. So called up lady on the phone was rude saying it's left. Yes I fully understand that you were busy but please don't lie to your customers. You obviously knew it would not reach us till 1hours and half to 1 hour 45 minutes! Also as Chinese goes unfortunately it was Luke warm and tasteless. We spent £81 on awful service and tbh below average chinese. Rude woman on the phone needs customer service training!

In short, at the weekend don’t order if you want your food in 90 minutes. During the week it will be within 45 mins. Don’t believe what your told, these times are from experience.

I found this Chinese Takeaway in Dunmow to be very good. We ordered at 5 pm when it opened to avoid the rush times and got our delivery at 5.40 pm which I thought was a good waiting time for a Saturday. Food was piping hot when it arrived, generous portions aswell and very tasty. I thought the price was reasonable too for the amount of dishes we had. Infact though we were only two people enjoying the Takeaway together, the portions were generous enough that there was enough for 3/4 people rather then 2 so we had enough leftover to put in the fridge for another day. The quality and taste of the food was very good ( nothing was missing from our order) and we would recommend it.

Receptionist very rude, delivery girl very rude, food terrible. Chicken under cooked. I feel something needs to be done before someone gets seriously ill. Where is the southaffican man? He was great, you felt like you couldn't complain about the food cause he was a jolly fella.

Inconsistent tasting dishes and just poor and not fresh ingredients all the time small portion of not freshly cooked prawn crackers that need to be improved, so just a below average takeaway

I have had several takeaways from this establishment, I have always found it very tasty and hot, however the only criticism I would make is that we ordered several chicken main dishes, and the sauce and vegetables were great, but so little meat in any of the dishes, just a sparse amount of small pieces of chicken and the dry shredded chilli beef, was really equivalent to a 1/4 of the portion that you would get elsewhere. Had there been more meat then I would have given 4/5 stars.

As other reviews really. Miss food off order and take forever to deliver. Gave me prawns instead of chicken. Promised to fix mistake and totally forgot about me. Very sad to see standards so low from this business in such a nice village. PLEASE AVOID

I have used this Takeaway for the last four years, and to be brutally honest, its just No good anymore. Last 2 orders food was missing from order and this time i was missing 2 dishes. so had to drive three miles to collect the missing food. The food was only warm when opened and the chicken balls were tough as old boots. for £40 I WILL NOW TRY ANOTHER TAKEAWAY. Only plus i we have never had food poisoning from here. O and they did not even apologise for the mistake or offer a refund.It would seen most of the Takeaways in Dunmow are not up to much these days.

We get a takeaway from here at least once per week, and it's always good. I get a little frustrated by people giving low ratings because the delivery service is slow/rude/absent... this is a takeaway, not a taxi service and the important factor is the quality of the food. Will you be complaining about the make of car that delivers your food next?

As far as take away food goes it's bang on, perfectly hot even after a 15min drive home and value for money. Best Chinese take away locally to me. All of my family have used it for years and persists to be the best I'm my opinion.

After a long day travelling home I ordered special chow mien, seaweed and quarter crispy duck pancakes and I was not disappointed! The duck was very meaty there was so much duck meat I didn’t have enough pancakes! Most duck comes with lots of bone and not much meat so I will definitely be ordering from this take away again!

Food was nice as usual, tasty and hot. Delivery time was quick. Always my favorite Chinese take away.

The food is the best Chinese takeaway in Dunmow but it comes at a cost. The rest of the reviews will probably put you off and I can’t disagree with what has been said. The fact that there are no responses to put you at ease tells you something for sure. I went in and ordered my food for 90 minutes later, it turned up 45 mins later even though my guests hadn’t arrived. I turned it away and said we want it when we ordered it. 5 minutes after it was supposed to have arrived I phoned and they said it was out for delivery. 25 minutes after it arrived apparently the driver had got lost. I then had to walk down the street to find them and they said because of a crash 5 miles away, that was the reason they were late. We live less than half a mile from the shop so obviously that was a lie or our food was being driven all over Essex. Apart from ordering an Indian takeaway, Dunmow is shocking for deliveries and this place is no different.

We ordered food at 7:15 we were told it would be 45mins wait for delivery which we thought Friday night that's fine. 1 hour later we phoned to ask when the delivery would be here the lady was extremely rude and said it will be leaving here soon and hung up. We phoned back about 20mins later and she said it's out for delivery it was her fault she never processed the ticket but no apology. The delivery finally arrived at 9:35pm we refused to pay the full amount so the delivery driver said she would phone her boss we offered £20 instead of £30 for the hassle and inconvenience he boss said no we will take £25. After haggling with her we finally paid the £25 but will not be ordering again EVER

Plenty of wonderful food for a very reasonable price. Will be ordering from Lucky Star again.

Really nice takeaway. Only problem I had was that I could not find their menu anywhere online. These days I'd say it's essential that businesses, especially takeaways, have their menu online.

Great Chinese food, delivered with the minimum of fuss very quickly. Recommend this take away we were in Little Canfield and they came out from Dunmow. Food ordered was standard Chinese but all delicious.

I love the food from the Lucky Star but giving a telephone order for delivery is not a pleasant experience. I don't think they want to deliver and sometimes give an inflated estimate for the delivery time so you will collect. However getting your food earlier than expected isn't always a good thing if you're not ready. Also their telephone manners leave a lot to be desired.

Enjoyed our takeaway. I feel portions sizes are smaller and the prices higher than other in dunmow, but food was nice and very tasty

I live in Dunmow and have struggled to find a good Chinese takeaway. This one is one of the better ones. But still only Ok. They are usually very busy on a friday and satuaday night. Which to me says they are ok. The only problem i have had the last three times is food missing from my order. Quality control needs to be addressed. Fist time one dish missing called and advised. they said come get it or we give free next time. Which they did but still missing in first instance. Second time had duck with pancakes and spring onion and cucumber. These were missing, not quite the same when missing. Third time hoisin sauce not in bag. Will be checking takeaway each time now.

Waited 2 hours for food! Rung 3 times never once got an apology, only to be told we can not get hold of the driver! Food eventually turned up, luke warm again with no apology. Wasnt the nicest of meals, If it wasn't the fact we were so hungry I would of sent it back!

The worst Chinese takeaway I have ever had. The special fried rice consisted of rice, peas and overly salty diced ham. I ordered a sauce, they gave me the wrong one, I ended up with a vinegary sweet and sour sauce, and the side order of chips were refried and cold. what a lovely valentines meal...thanks!!

don't bother. I ordered a takeaway tonight being a ''Wednesday'' night. Ordered at 9.00 pm and they turned up at 10.45!! couldnt contact them either to ask what the hell was going on. They turned up and food was cold . Not the first time this has happened. When they finally turned up they said we cant contact them after 10 pm. That stupid if you have an order still pending.Bad food and bad customer service
