Great evening in a busy restaurant, both had fish and chips, best fish I’ve had for years( Whitby still the best ) just a shame they don’t make the chips they used to. Fantastic staff, Best table.

The Chequers is set in a beautiful village facing the cricket green. We had a midweek lunch when the restaurant was not busy. Staff were competent and helpful. A good choice on the set menu. Good value and a friendly environment. We will return

Lovely as always. A few noisy kids this particular lunchtime, but service, staff and food completely top notch as per usual. One of my favourite places for lunch.

We have visited and enjoyed this restaurant for 20years and more but our experience last Friday is enough to make us take it off our dining list. Our waiter was lackadaisical, the food was very below par and made us think there may have been a new chef. Tables were so crowded together that it was impossible to have a normal conversation and to top it all there was a very loud table quite close to us that everyone was complaining about but the staff didn’t seem to address. We paid £160 for 3 people which did not match the expectations.

Lovely evening great food super service only issue was i fell down the steps into the back of the restaurant i think they could light them better as they are dangerous i have the bruises and grazes to prove it.

We love everything about the restaurant. The noise level was rather high but we were still able to talk, and the buzz adds to the atmosphere.

This was quite simply a wonderful meal, where the food and service were faultless. The service in particular was both attentive and of a very high standard. Superb food and family birthday that was made all more enjoyable for being there!

It’s the 3rd time I’ve been to the restaurant in recent months and unfortunately every time I’ve been I’ve been disappointed but also optimistic that ‘next time will be better’. The service is great and always friendly, the drinks are great and ambience is lovely however the food seems to be getting progressively worse. I had steak which was extremely fatty, chips that seemed hard and over cooked as well as a mac and cheese that could potentially be the worst mac and cheese I’ve tasted. It was bland and boring and barely even tasted of cheese. I don’t tend to leave reviews unless positive but I feel the quality of food is slipping whilst the price stays consistently high! I would return but I would avoid the high priced, poor quality of steak.

This restaurant caters for almost everyone and was a great experience considering we had one Vegan and one vegetarian in our group of 5. Everyone enjoyed the wine and their meal.

I took my boyfriend to the Chequers for our Christmas date night. It is a beautiful location and looked very festive and cosy inside. Our service was great and the waiting staff were attentive and friendly. However, the meal was let down by the food. The prawn cocktail was nice except for the two King Prawns on the side were under cooked, and the bread in the bread/olives starter was hard and tasted slightly stale and there were no olives. My steak was really tasty but my boyfriend's burger was quite rubbery and pink inside.

Excellent food & service. Booked my birthday lunch there and chose from the set menu which didn’t disappoint, our desert was delivered in style by three waiters who sang happy birthday to me..... we all throughly enjoyed the afternoon

Great food, great service, great lunch.

We have dined here before but not for a while. The food was beautifully presented, the portion sizes, just right. There is a very good choice and for once my mother in law who is on a special diet had more than one choice in both the starter and main menu, which is very rarely found. We even found her a desert she could have. However, our table was booked for 7 pm and we had a feeling of being rushed, no sooner had we ordered, our starter was with us, once that was finished and cleared our main arrived, in all 3 courses were consumed within an hour. In all fairness without mum in law we would not usually book at table until 8.30 or slightly later, so whilst I understand that there would be later covers, it was rushed. This does not detract from the fact that the food is great, a brilliant choice, they have got it right on that score, that’s why it’s a popular hot spot. We will be back, but not so early in the evening.

As usual the chequers delivers, Sunday roast was and is great!<br />Family friendly, kids loved it so did the adults.<br />Always worth a visit.

We had a pleasant welcome and were seated on a comfortable and quiet table. The service, initially was very friendly and efficient, but as the evening wore on we had to go to the bar to get any attention for desserts and to get the bill. <br />Prices are at the higher end of a good pub meal but food is tasty and the portions generous.<br />We did come here once on a Saturday evening when it was very noisy, but midweek is much quieter.

Really enjoyed Sunday lunch and will definitely come again. As a Coeliac who is also a Vegetarian I was really impressed with the service and food choices available. Staff/kitchen were very knowledgeable and put me immediately at ease. It was fabulous to see food choices clearly marked as GF!! Thank you!!

I always enjoy going to The Chequers, food and service good and set in such a lovely village. I love the outside space in the summer and the cosy area by the bar in winter.

Always a guaranteed and assured time spent at The Chequers, Matching Green. For a very busy restaurant, the staff have delivering great customer service off to a fine art, very seamless.

Lunch with friends drove 45 minutes to get there well worth it previously visited in the summer when we sat outside, beautiful setting with the Cricket Green opposite, but just as lovely and cosy and stylish indoors for the Winter months. Great food and friendly service! Thank You.

Went to The Chequera for the first time last Thursday having just moved into the area. I have to say we were very impressed, lovely friendly helpful staff &amp; the menu was quite extensive without being overly expensive. The service was excellent, not too rushed between courses &amp; the food was lovely, excellent value for money. We will certainly return in the not too distant future.

We had an early booking so it wasn&#039;t very busy however everything from a drink at the bar through to the food and service was outstanding

Was ok, roast beef was fatty,the roast potatoes not crispy,food was hot,had to drink a bottle beer which was not my first choice or second

Have been regularly over the years for lunch, which is fabulous value, with great service, ambience and lovely food. In fact I went for lunch on the Thursday before with a colleague. Gorgeous. This was a little disappointing. The service was very good as usual but the food was a bit crude. The steak was blue, not rare and full of gristle and my brioche bread and butter pudding was just solid, not light and airy like it should be. Just a bit disappointing, that&#039;s all, and it&#039;s expensive in the evenings. If I lived a bit closer I could happily go for lunch every week but I&#039;ll go elsewhere for dinner in future.<br /><br />The dessert did arrive on a lovely plate with Happy Anniversary on it, which was nice.

Lovely place, Starters were excellent but the main courses were average. Decided not to say at the time as it was a special occasion but the Seabass was bland and the RibEye was 50% pure fat and the steak , whilst cooked correctly ( medium rare) was tough and I suspect could have been rested a little longer.

As usual, great food, good people, good fun, well looked after. Try other places but still the best.

I made a same day reservation for lunch for a friend and I. The set lunch menu was very tasty and fabulous value for money. All the staff that we encountered were friendly, polite and professional making the whole dining experience an extremely enjoyable one. Both my friend and I always comment on the attitude and friendliness of staff as we both agree this is one of the most important aspects of any dining experience. Well done! We&#039;ll definitely be back.

This is our favourite pub in Herts/Essex! We live in Loughton but it&#039;s so worth the trip up here on a Sunday for a late lunch. The food is amazing and they cater for my gluten and dairy free needs with food that is so delicious. Most pubs don&#039;t even come close to this one on the food. The service is very friendly and attentive and the pub decor is gorgeous with a really cosy feel in the lounge area of the bar, which is fab in the winter. They also do a wonderful range of cocktails and it&#039;s located overlooking a beautiful green. Chequers definitely ticks all our boxes! ❤️

The sharing seafood platter for 2 arrived with 3 lobster tails? (Emphasis on the sharing), balanced precariously and unnecessarily in the middle of the table with over cooked prawns. The biscuit served with the dessert was suitable only with a hot drink as it was impossible to bite and should have been left behind in the kitchen wedging the door open. The service however was friendly and not rushed.

Having been to this restaurant before on a weekend when it was very noisy we tried it midweek and found it much more congenial. The service was very good and the noise level was much lower. The menu was varied and interesting. The only negative point was that the price level was higher than expected, especially for puddings; to pay more than £5 for a pudding is unusual in this part of the country

Fantastic place to eat on a lovely sunny summery day. The food was good, not outstanding but very good, the service was lovely and we had a great time.

We went for a set menu lunch which was yummy. The starter was my favourite, I choose something I wouldn’t have normally for main which was good too and a brilliant desert. Lovely refreshing drinks and plenty of shade on a extremely hot day. We will be returning.

Friends 80th birthday lunch, been going here since Roberta took over, in fact his first customer. The food once received couldn’t be better but the service that day was non existent. Had to ask for them to take our order, then had to ask after 45 minutes why our food hadn’t been delivered. <br /><br />The good point was the manager couldn’t apologise enough and lunch was on the house. Never had a problem before and the point is, they put it right without quibble. Going back next week so hasn’t put us off dining there.

Food good but not outstanding. Very noisy. Waitresses were very good, cheerful and helpful. Service was good and the right sort of speed. Did not feel rushed at any time. Table a bit on the small side for 4 people dining.

Very friendly, patient and professional staff. Lovely setting next to a quiet village green. One of my friends got lost and was very late. This was simply no problem. We ate from the fixed price midweek lunch menu and it was all delicious, beautifully presented and outstanding value - £16.50 for three courses was a steal. I&#039;ve been a number of times before but my friends didn&#039;t even know it existed. They were pleasantly surprised and hugely impressed. I&#039;d have lunch there every day if I could.

Lovely atmosphere and great food. Highly recommend. Catered for all weathers so being outside was not a problem as the patio heaters provided plenty of warmth with cushions and blankets also available. Everything catered for.

Really lovely pub with great covered outdoor eating and large beer garden. The food was lovely although with one disappointment,which is the reason I gave 4 rather than 5 stars. I had the Beef Wellington which, untraditionally, had mustard inside. This wasn’t stated on the menu and I do think if a chef is going to vary from a traditional recipe it should be stated on the menu. I really hate mustard but luckily my lovely boyfriend swapped his meal for mine otherwise I would have had to send it back. It wouldn’t stop us from going again though as it was otherwise great.

Went for brunch/ lunch to watch the risk wedding. we were the only ones dining but the staff made us feel welcome and the fox was fabulous!

Really nice standard of food. Varied selection on the menu. Always cooked to perfection. Always excellent service, particularly this time from a David, our waiter who ensured we were happy from start to finish. Slight delay with the food due to a influx of orders, but worth the wait.

As always a lovely meal hreat choice on the menu with attentive service.
