The Blue Boar Restaurant in Epping Forest

We had a lovely stay, the staff were so lovely and friendly and the room was clean and one of the most comfortable beds I've slept in.

This is a beautiful place to stay. Even the fact that it is impossible to get into the ladies' toilet cubicals without standing on the toilet does not detract from the 5 stars I have awarded here. The accommodatipn was fantastic, and the food was excellent. Please review the doors in your ladies' toilets,as they are not fit for purpose. You are such a beautiful establishment that this is such a small thing to fix.

There was four of us, had one hour at the bar prior to sitting down at our table. Staff were very amicable and on sitting at our table they were very prompt. Had starters all good. Ordered three roasts. Two lamb and one mixed, the meats were very tough and stringy. Told the waitress got no response. Conclusion. Would not recommend a Sunday roast to any of our friends !!

I used to work many years ago & used to pass the hotel/pub twice a day & always wondered what it was like. Well, we had been visiting family further into Essexin the morning & I suggested we should find somewhere nice for a late lunch & as we were heading towards Abridge, i suggested we try The New Boar Abridge. This we did. The food was excellent, especially the liver & bacon with onions. Nicely decorated dinning area with plenty of space & lots of light. If we are back in the area, we will pop in for food.

Was brilliant beforre and still brilliant under new ownership. Geeat service, food, drinks and a lovely venue. We will be back. Fabulous inpromtu Mnday night date night. Lovely x

Absolutely descanting costumer service so bad

After being housebound for 3 weeks following surgery my husband took us for lunch. Plenty of parking. Warm friendly welcome and feel to the new boar. Was seated by the window at a lovely table.waitress was first class. Lime and soda had a great amount of lime and was refreshing. I ate from the set menu that had plenty of choice. I had bruschetta to start. Presentation spot on and tasted fab with great balance of flavours. I had fish and chips for main. This is where the quality wasn’t so great. The batter was under done and soft. The fish was opaque rather than white and I found some bones and cartilage. The chips were dry and peas were very hard. I think I picked wrong as the table behind us had pork belly that looked amazing!

Stopped in for lunch today with my partner,it was so nice. We both had the Prawn Cocktail starters which were delicious. I had Salmon pasta for mains and it was so fresh and creamy,my partner had Fish and chips which was one of the best ge has had. Service and ambience was superb, highly recommend coming here.

Stayed two nights as attending a wedding. Check in they couldn't find the key. Eventually led up to room. Up some steep steps and no offer to help with our bags .The biggest room we were being given said the young girl. The room on first look was a good size. Big double bed. Table. Wardrobe. Chairs. Kettle. Tea and coffee and biscuits. Ensuite with shower and stand alone bath. Location was 10 minutes away from wedding venue. Upon closer inspection the room was not cleaned to a high standard. Carpet could do with a proper clean. Dead flies on outside rim of shower and sink. Kettle could do with regular descaling. But I'd say 3 star standard. The windows are absolutely ridiculous. Paper thin. Difficult to open or close as they wobble like they are going to fall out. Also the window ledge had debris and milk cartons from room on. Not a good look. But mainly it's the noise. The place is on a main road and if you want any chance of sleeping take earplugs. Absolutely horrendous noise all night. Roaring motorbikes like they were in the room with you. And the light from outside comes into the room because of the blinds. Get double glazing for goodness sake The bed was large and comfy but please what's with all the cushions. They make it feel grimy and most people like me throw them off and on floor. Ugh. We used tea making facilities. Only two tiny bottles of water. Not good enough. We filled kettle from sink but could only fill it up halfway because of positioning of tap. Ridiculous again. The noise from other rooms is unreal. Sneezing. Yawning and one guest constantly making a strange grunting sound and banging around. Again you will not get a peaceful moment here. The floor creaks and moves, literally, when you walk on it. I would say it's a 3 star JUST. On check out no one to thank you for your stay. Just put your key in a box and off you go. Very unpersonanable. Also remember you are above a pub In summary Good size room Noisy Adequate cleaning but needs improving Supply more water Appreciated the fan as hot days and night and couldn't have windows open because of noise No personal touch Location good for our purposes Would not visit again

We really enjoyed our meal at the New Boar. We went on a Sunday evening and ordered a selection of food, and it was all delicious. The food was well seasoned and nicely presented, too. The portions were generous and the children's meals were really nice, we all left very happy. Service was good, and the restaurant has been nicely renovated since we last visited when it was still the Blue Boar. Recommend!

A really good find. Excellent food (apart from the trendy use of chilli) at a decent price. Warm, welcoming & efficient staff. Very roomy car park and seating.

Meal here a few days ago. Starter of scallops on leek puree was actually pea puree. Barely warm but very nice. Main chicken breast stuffed with cheesy sauce - enormous portion.

Unfortunately this lovely pub is not dog friendly 😔, which does not help when it's surrounded by countryside. They would have got our service if one doggy was allowed in.

Eat out four nights a week im sorry to say and most are poor to average for the money but went to New Boar Friday night and couldn't fault the food and whats great is that it has a full range of prices. Will definitely be back but not Friday as disco night.

Hugely enjoyable lunch for my sister's birthday. A vast improvement from when it was the Blue Boar in case you've not been here for a while. Super friendly efficient service despite the restaurant being busy with a large group. Most of our group had the fish and chips which was delicious and my lamb shank was spot on too. Portion sizes generous without being too large. Deserts were superb. If the carrot cake is on as a special I'd highly recommend it. We'll definitely be back.

Hosted our sons christening as a private hire area. Had a Sunday roast buffet. Food was so lovely and plentiful and staff really helpful and attentive.

Visited for lunch with friends on a very busy Monday. Staff very friendly but due to the shear number of customers including three Birthday parties they were streched. The service was good and the food excelent making a very enjoyable lunch time in comfortable surrounding. Not over expensive and would recommend the New Boar for a family meal, special treat or pleasant lunch.

28/03/24 Just eaten there for wife’s birthday and the service was second to none. Very accommodating after our daughter had a meltdown when we arrived! Food was amazing and the recent refurb looks great! Can’t wait to go back!

Going to London to see guys and dolls. Needed a place near debden. Found this absolute gem of a hotel. Rooms clean and comfy. Very boutique chic. Little treats left biscuits hot choc etc.marvellous.

Mother's day meal so at their busiest. However all of the young waiting staff were very polite & professional and went about their work with a smile. Food was very good with plenty of options despite a scaled down menu. Special requests were catered for without fuss. Main courses were so generous there was no room for dessert! Very nice experience overall

Had a lovely meal Thursday 29th Feb. Food was delicious and the service was impeccable. Our young waitress was very attentive and she knew her stuff, answering all our questions about the food without hesitation. We were all very impressed

Service very good, but no assigned waitress meaning we were asked the same thing by different staff. Food tastless and nothing special at all. Poor choice of desserts which were again tastless and poor quality. Random decoration! Ceiling very distracting! Far too many colours and patterns going on in there! Overpriced for the quality of food. Fish almost looked shop bought. Triple cooked chips a bit hard. Dessert was the worst brownie ever which had been microwaved so much it was nearly caramelised. Won't be going again.

Haven’t been here for many years but decided to give it a go as in the area. Firstly make sure you enter your registration on the iPad otherwise you will end up with a parking fine. The friendly staff did remind us on arrival. All staff really friendly and the menu is nice lots of choice. I opted the the cheeseburger but was a bit disappointed with it as it was nothing special. I would give it another try though.

Been to a few of our locals for lunch and been disappointed, today was different. Made to feel welcome by the staff and they wanted you to come back. Food was very good, service was great, makes a nice change to be made to feel welcome and the staff actually care. Thank you.

We decided to go here as a last resort as all the best pubs were fully booked. 12 of us out celebrating my nans birthday. First thing we experienced as we walked through the door was the stench of poo from the toilets, walk past that to the bar area owners just sat their blowing his nose, slurping up his own dinner, gross. We are then taken to the back of the restaurant, where there is large circle table and two rectangle tables pushed together, one with a cloth, one without, table not dressed at all (thanks for making that area special after taking a £120 deposit) We arrived at 7:30 our dinner plates were still not cleared by 9:30, restaurant wasn't even busy, food was so bad, zero flavour, over cooked (avoid rib of beef and croquettes - disgusting) they forgot two of our starters, messed up one of them, each meal didn't clear our plates away after we'd finished 1 hour gap between starters and mains, service was so poor, didn't take one glass away from the table the whole meal (photo) no one asking if we're ok, had to walk up and ask the owner if he could ask the staff (who were just out in the kitchen laughing and joking) if someone could come and clear our plates, he offered a round offered drinks aggressively like he thought that would solve everything, just a rubbish experience start to finish, didn't have any ginger beer, the wine tasted like ribeana, owner doesn't care, no manager organising the teenage staff, awful food, avoid at all costs.

From the minute we got there, the welcome was impeccable, the waitress Olive was so lovely and knowledgeable, the food served was big but really gorgeous. We had prawn cocktail to start, steak pie and mash and found some room for a pudding. Thank you Blue Boar team. You made our visit so special

Beautiful venue traditional pub reserved Christmas dinner for 7 of my family no atmosphere of Christmas You get one chance at Christmas dinner? I do not blame the staff. I blame me for choosing this venue absolutely disaster no Christmas crackers on the table to get in the mood Christmas dinner was a 4 out of 10 no trimmings, stuffing etc had to ask for drinks twice likewise for a pudding never never again overrated

Last night our Christmas meal which was very good, the service and staff very friendly and efficient. We were looking forward to the music and dancing, but sadly the DJ did not want anyone dancing, did not play any Christmas music and despite many asking for requests continued to play music to an empty dance floor. Such a shame.

We held a wedding reception dinner for 40 guests in the private dining room. A big 'thank you' to all the staff, especially John, the manager and India, our wonderful waitress. All of our family and friends said what a great evening they had - the food was excellent and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Some of our family stayed in the hotel, and they said the staff could not have been more helpful. You gave us all an evening to remember - thank you!

Went to the blue boar to watch the football with family and friends and I was not disappointed I had the cheese and onion garlic bread to start and that did not disappoint then as a main I had the chicken shish and it had a lot of flavour. The staff was amazing and very welcoming service was fast and overall was very impressed despite the bad reviews I have read. Will definitely be making a return for Sunday lunch

I had a very pleasant meal on a cold midweek evening. The restaurant was almost empty, just 3 tables with other guests, but it was quiet which suited us. The food was very good, if a little rushed. It was very obvious that we were the last in and the staff wanted to leave. As soon as our desert arrived the lights in the kitchen were turned off. You also need to be ok with dogs running around the place. We had a chat with the owner about the impact inflation was having on his business. Less and less people eating out. I mention talking to the owner, because even though it was quiet, no one mentioned that we needed to register our cars for parking. Fast forward to yesterday when I got a letter from Avis stating that I had incurred a fine for illegal parking at The Blue Boar. Because Avis has paid it and slapped on an admin fee, there is no appeal according to the parking company. Suggestion to the owner - put big signs on the door that leads in from the car park- ‘make sure you register’ and also train your staff to remind every table.

Having read the reviews we were very apprehensive about The Blue Boar in Abridge. I felt I needed to write a review as we had a wonderful experience from start to finish. We had a great welcome from the staff and we were seated in the restaurant which was very festive and friendly, they also reminded us to input the car reg no. for the car park. We were offered a menu which had a nice selection to suit everyone. I had the haddock and hand cut chips. I wasn’t disappointed, we also had prawn linguine and the mushroom risotto. I don’t normally have a desert but we decided to try (and share) the cheesecake with passion fruit. It was amazing. We will all be back for Sunday lunch if we can get a table next week. Very impressed.

Had no towels. No hot water Paid £125.00 When mentioned the following day (11am before anyone around) it was met with nothing but apathy. Could not recommend to anybody. Definitely not value for money. Poor effort.

Took the missus out for Sunday lunch today and decided to pop into the blue boar. The premises itself is a nice place. We went for the roast dinner option . Within 4 minutes our food had arrived and I though blimey that was quick. I had the roast beef it came with a pathetic Yorkshire pudding , gravy like water and vegetables just out of the microwave . The missus had the gammon. To say that both meats were of poor cheap standard is an understatement. Reminded me of the crap we got served up in primary school . The price that they charge is simply shocking but I suppose they are living off their poncy Essex reputation. What I would say is stay clear of the gaff for Sunday lunch as you don't get much change for a score a pop and the food was so bland . Very disappointed and the quality of their products were poor. I suggest they get their meats from a reputable source rather than from a wholesale place. To be honest you would get better produce from soup kitchen. Not worth the money and the quality the worse I've had in memory

Take money off you and when you they admit to an error then ignore attempts to pay you back and go off on holiday with your money safely deposited! Nice work Dave King

Went to the pub for gig the gig was great. food was terrible and inedible also I registered my number plate and I still got a £100 fine it’s outrageous

I've only given a one star as Google have yet to introduce a "don't touch with an electrified barge-pole" rating. We visited a week last Sunday and instead of Sunday lunch they had a different arrangement. What a total nightmare. There was a DJ in the middle of the dining area blaring out music the whole time, at a level so loud you couldn't hear yourself think. The people from the first sitting hadn't left and were dancing in the middle and around the tables like a nightclub and using them to put their drinks on whilst the second sitting was trying to eat their food. Service was appalling. Was told when we got there that they wasn't able to offer table service and you had to go up to the till to do it, but this was manned by a girl who looked no more than 14 or 15 (not legal surely?) who bless her, was clearly out of her depth. One middle-aged woman in front of me was explaining that she and her friends had been waiting over an hour for their drinks. She wasn't being nasty, but out of nowhere the Landlord came charging over accusing her of creating trouble and upsetting his staff and told her and her friends to f*ck off! She tried to explain, but he then said if she didn't f*ck off, he'd hit her? I couldn't believe my ears. He then went outside to where her and her friends were sitting, no doubt thinking they'd escape the music but alas there were speakers there also, and told them all to f*ck off and that if they didn't he'd hit them as well. . I'm talking ladies in their late 50's to 60's -not quite blue rinse but certainly not trouble-makers. Never in all my extensive experience in dining at varying levels of eateries throughout the world have I witnessed behaviour like it. It made Fawlty Towers seem like The Ritz. They left in such a rush that one of them who must have been celebrating her birthday bless her, left a present under the table which was spotted by another diner who handed it over the car park fence to her. Cue another volley of abuse and threats from the landlord who was still hovering menacingly. Needless to say we wont be returning there or indeed any of the other pubs apparently associated with the same landlord.

I had the displeasure of eating in the Blue Boar in April. Baring in mind this was out first meal out for 6 months and it was a complete let down.We booked the table in January, we were escorted to a table that was outside the main restaurant, to a beer soaked garden bench with cushions. If I had known that was going to be my table then I wouldn't have bothered. We were told upon arrival that it was noted in the confirmation email, that we might be allocated a garden table. This was true but you don't expect a grimy old beer bench.It was freezing, with no heater. Secondly, they got our drinks wrong twice but I couldn't be bothered to complain anymore. To top it off, they decided to put up a beer tent opposite the dining area which was full of a load of young chav's off the their face doing balloons canisters, drugs in the toilet and crashing into the garden tables outside because they were so off their face. Additionally the toilets were disgusting. My question to the Blue Boar is, who is your target audience? Young kids who wanna get off their face in your car park, or people who are willing to pay for a reasonably expensive meal in your restaurant and want to enjoy a nice atmosphere. I appreciate you need to make money anyway you can but the two demographics do not go together. b

Huge thanks to Estelle and the team for looking after us when we arrived for lunch. Estelle really did go out of her way to ensure that we could enjoy our day even in the cold! It was so enjoyable that we moved over the other tent for evening drinks. Espresso martini was frothy perfection.

Seated us on a picnic table for a birthday meal... After several complaints 45mins later moved us to a dining table. Took food order (just 2 dishes) twice as they lost 1st order! Finally 1hr15mins food arrived - took £8 off bill. Not returning shabby all round

We had the roast dinner today from the blue boar ordered for 3pm and was ready when we picked up this is the best in the local area I can’t wait for the next time.

We came here in December for a birthday meal. They served up the meals to some, not all, there was a big delay, so we spoke to them and they forgot to deliver the rest of the meals to us... so when they arrived the food was cold, we sent it back and it was no doubt microwaved. Anyway... the next thing they gave my child pasta and used chilli pasta sauce instead of the kids pasta sauce. My little girl started to eat it and then stopped, looked like she's seen a ghost. We called the waitress over, they said there's no way the chef done this, anyway they tried it and the manager came over and apologised. At this point we wanted to go and they said we could have desserts on the house. We ordered these... 45 minutes later, nothing. We spoke to the waitress and she forgot to tell the chef. It was laughable. Absolute joke. We paid what we felt was right and then left, we won't be going there again.

Booked a Sunday roast to be delivered today for 5.00 pm. Arrived early and piping hot. Can’t recommend them enough for the quality of the food and the amount served. On the list to use again. Thank you to the staff for continuing your service in these strange times

Went with a couple of friends for lunch on a recommendation but will not return Outside dining was freezing.. we were seated on the edge of the marquee next to a permanently open exit gate which had a broken catch on it .. no where near a heaterTo top it all my cordial arrived in a jug with gravy inside and out .. the soup was barely lukewarm and main course very disappointing and dry ... the bill came to £35 pp for just 2 courses ... no alcohol ... felt ripped off !!!I know places are struggling because of Covid but look after the customers you have

Great atmosphere, real family vibe with music sweets and entertainment for the kids. Had our table for 6 outside very comfortable and decorated for Halloween . We all enjoyed the food and had a lovely lunch.

I had a lovely lunch at the Blue Boar today with a friend of mine. The food was wonderful and there was a great atmosphere even though we ate in the marquee they were very careful with Covid precautions. Our waitress, Georgia, was particularly attentive and made our visit that little bit more special. We shall certainly be returning.

Whilst I fully appreciate you offering an outside terrace for your customers, there needs to be some flexibility in helping ALL diners to keep warm, comfortable and welcome.You can not have inconsistencies in who can sit where, who can be moved to a warmer table and who can suddenly have the sides lowered to keep warm, when other customers aren’t offered the same.All customers have the right to be treated the same, regardless of who they are and how much they are spending.If you want customers to return, then I think you need to be more attentive and be consistent with your processes, offering a consistent answer to all.So many other Restaurant's offering a better service, giving customers a feeling that they wish to return.
