Called in on a Friday lunch time after recommendation from a friend and was not disappointed. Lovely little old fashioned pub with friendly and welcoming staff. We had a sandwich each, wife had prawn and I had beef and stilton, on brown bread. Both delicious and will certainly be having again. Just a bit of info for those wanting to eat here, food only served Wednesday to Saturday, 12 00 to 14 00.

Front door was locked, we had to search for around the side for an entrance. A member of the party missed the side entrance and ended up around the back where the doors were also locked. Told not to sit at the table by the bar as Sunday night regulars expected. Selection of beers OK but quite clearly don't encourage custom. Went to order a drink for the 5 of us at 10.10pm and was told that the bar closed at 10pm! Not just poor business practice but sheer bad manners.

This lovely cosy village pub serves some great British food. Wednesday lunch is for pensioners so we thought we would try it. 2 courses for £6.50. There was a choice of about 3-4 mains and the same with desserts. I had ham, egg & chips, which is always enjoyable and the other half delved into fish, chip & peas . The homemade mint aero cheesecake with a dollop of ice cream was a winner and he enjoyed the fruit salad with ice cream. Very pleasant staff. If you are into a real ale, you will certainly get a choice here but if you prefer wine, there are 3 on tap plus all the other drinks you expect from a pub.

This is a delightful country pub with a warm welcome. We travelled here on Boxing Day and the Christmas atmosphere added to the cosy interior. We didn’t eat here but the menu looked tempting with various pub-style options. The pub is on the main high street and it has a large parking area. It’s chargeable for non patrons but if you add your licence number at the bar when ordering it’s free (I guess this is to deter commuters). There’s a large outdoor area with benches so I’d imagine this is very popular in the summer. A lovely, relaxed hour passed quickly, we’ll be back.

Dropped in for a quick drink while waiting for a train. Marvellous place. Warm welcome, good conversation, music low enough for comfort. The layout is slightly unusual but it works! As you enter, you find yourself not facing the bar but alongside it. This layout ensures that everyone sitting at the bar sees everyone who enters immediately without turning around. The drink was very good value. A barbecue had taken place in the garden at lunchtime, and almost all the food had been sold, so attendance must have been good. Lovely people. Will be back. Great village too, and not far from London by train from Liverpool Street. You may hear a cuckoo if you're lucky.

This was a Friday lunchtime during half term. The pub was full of mainly middle-aged people and felt it was the 'local' for a lot of them. Food was standard pub grub (I wouldn't call it gastro at all - at lunchtime anyway) which was perfectly acceptable and portions were a reasonable size, but I thought the service was quite slow - I ordered a plain burger and chips for my son and I had a filled baguette which took about half an hour. Also we were served it without cutlery or condiments which I had to ask for. There is a garden behind which looks very pleasant.

We ate here for the 3rd or 4th time on Saturday 19th AugustHow utterly bizarre! It is apparently acceptable for two drunken punters to bring in their own wireless speaker plug it in and use a smartphnoe to assault the ears of everyone in the bar area to their own particular taste in music? There was also some very poor attempts at karaoke, a but of drunken dancing, and much staggering about from a small number of drunken punters at the bar. The two barstaff consisted of one woman who was helping out and it was her first day, the other, I presume more experienced, member of staff did initially several times ask that the music be turned down so that it didn't disturb people in the restaurant, this worked for a short time, but soon it was cranked up again..... there is a sign out the front saying "New bar staff needed" ...... how true. The music and drunkenness spoilt the evening for me.Now don't presume that all is negative - the staff were actually very nice, apart from failing to control the customers at the bar. The food was again very good - certainly the best of the three pubs in the village. We were impressed when the waitress come over and said the the chef wasn't happy with the halibut and wouldn't send it out, so would we like something else - well done! All four of us enjoyed the food, and the beers and wines were also very nice.Again it is the only pub in the village that alliows dogs inside - an important consideration as the nights draw in and the evenings become chilly. The low rating this time is simply a reflection of the awful noise a small group were allowed to inflict on the rest of the customers.Would we go back again? Yes - but armed with a wireless speaker and my iPod, my choice of music would soon clear the bar leaving us to enjoy a tasty meal in piece. Not sure where the owner was, it they were in the kitchen maybe they weren't aware of what was going on at the front of house?

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Visited weekends and evenings and the staff are always friendly. The place ranges from comfortably busy to quite quiet depending on your timings but flips between the two quite quickly. Have always been able to find a table when we have wanted to eat as a lot of people come for the food so the tables turn over reasonably quickly, although I have never been rushed to give mine up after eating. Prices are good with main meals starting from about £7.50 moving up to about £15 although many of the options are at the cheaper end. Whitby scampi and chips seems popular and having had this myself I can see why. I did get adventurous and try the sea bass with stir fry vegetables and new potatoes - what a great choice, perfectly cooked and good portion of sea bass with a beautiful stir fry full of flavour. People on the next table starting asking me about it as it looked so good. If I saw this on the menu again (it was on the specials board) I would have it in a heartbeat. The Sunday lunch is £12.95 for 2 courses. There have always been four choices when we have been, lamb, beef, chicken and pork and All meat options come with a Yorkshire Pudding. They always have a veggie option. Great range of veggies on the plate Roast potatoes, swede mash, potato mash, cabbage, carrots are all cooked well, not hard, not soggy but just the right amount of crispness. Plenty of gravy, and if you want more you just ask and they bring you out a jug of it! The puddings are home made, the ones I have seen most are bread and butter pudding, sticky toffee (had both and they are very good), profiteroles, chocolate fudge cake, baileys cheese cake, lemon drizzle cake. There are around 7 options on the board at any time. All come with a choice of custard, cream or ice cream. One of our guests asked if they could have a mixture of custard and cream and were told "you can have all 3 of you like love, not a problem". Have been to the pub as a couple and as part of a table of 6 and each time service has been friendly and they will reserve you a table if you give them a call. They do cook from fresh so it takes a little longer at busy times but not excessively so. Ok, so as well as the food it is a pub so should mention the beer and wine. Good range of beers, lager and a cider on tap. Decent quality and clean glasses. Wine comes in bottles (full size) or for individual glasses red is in small bottles, white and Rose is on tap - now I was rather dubious about this when I first saw it but I when I tried the Sauvignon blanc it was very drinkable and the perfect temperature and I had a second large glass! Usual assortment of spirits etc and prices seem reasonable on the drinks. Soft drinks are done as a standard glass or a pint. You find a lot of customers have been coming here for years mixed with visitors to the area, there are two other competing pubs in about a 20 yard radius in a pretty small village so it must be good to survive. We have found the locals quite chatty if you sit at the bar and the village is lovely with some really nice walks down by the canal. Overall a really good pub with really good staff.

This pub was recommended to me by one of my work mates. He said it had a good beer garden and indeed it does. My wife and I fancied Sunday lunch out and we thought we would try it. We are glad we did. In today's times, two courses for £12.95 we consider to be good value. We decided to have the beer battered cod with chips and peas. We paid for the meal and sat in the beer garden. The surroundings were pleasant, plenty of tables on grass with trees and shrubs at the sides. There was a children's play area at the bottom of the garden. It was busy without being packed, we didn't have to wait too long for our food. The plates coming out to the other customers all looked full. The carvery looked good. Our cod chips and peas were good too. A good sized piece of tasty battered fish, plenty of tasty chips and peas without being too many. It did fill us up. For dessert my wife had the ice cream sundae, served in a reasonably sized glass and I had a decent sized wedge of hot chocolate fudge cake, served with cream though ice cream and custard were available as alternatives. It was a most enjoyable meal in pleasant surroundings. The staff were friendly. This being a pub and not a restaurant their menu isn't huge, it was chalked on a blackboard across from the bar, but the food is good and we will most certainly be coming here again.

pub inside is average really but the garden is superb for a summer function or for taking the kids as it has a great adventure playground at the back. barbecues in the summer are quite good.

Went on Feb 14th for my sons birthday. Eight of us, ordered the Sunday roasts, platters to share and some cod and chips. None of us could fault any of the meals and the service. This was our third visit and the previous two were just as good.

This is a real village pub. The service, food and drinks are all excellent. We have eaten there many times and never had a bad meal. The Sunday lunch is superb.

Probably the most underestimated pub and eatery in the Roydon area. A typical country pub, excellent ales kept to a high standard. The main eatery is in the bar area but the establishment boasts an excellent chef who serves up a varied cuisine. There is the standard menu but the specials board is always changing with a host of different dishes, all being very reasonably priced and certainly plentiful. Sunday lunch is another chapter in itself, normally a selection of four roasts with vegetarian options and four freshly cooked vegetables. If you can manage it the sweets are to die for. The pub is spotlessly clean and Mary the landlady obviously runs a tight ship with great staff. It is obviously a locals pub but all visitors are made to feel very welcome. Having lived in the village for all of 6 weeks what a find to have this great local on my doorstep.

Mary runs a great pub, having been at The New Inn for many years. Friendly atmosphere obviously very popular with the locals. Good choice on the menu, very tasty nice size meals. Location in the centre of this lovely village with easy parking in their own car park. Well worth a visit.

The New Inn is a lovely old pub, nestling in the pretty village of Roydon. I met a group of friends here for lunch, which was very enjoyable. There was a good choice of food and all our meals were delicious. My only complaint, a poor cappuccino, poured straight from a machine, so no froth on top!

We've been popping in to this pub for many years as we live locally. The food is good old fashioned pub grub, scampi, burgers, fish, meat pies, etc, always well cooked and well presented. Recently held a baby shower in the small room, it was great. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Would thoroughly recommend.

We went there for dinner on Saturday night. The staff were very pleasant and welcoming and the place had a good atmosphere. There is a menu with the usual pub grub choices but also a blackboard on the wall with the day's specials. We chose from the board and the food arrived fairly quickly and it was beautifully cooked.. We enjoyed our meal so much that we wanted to go back the next night but unfortunately they stopped serving food on the Sunday at 5.00. Will definitely eat there again if we go back in the future

Mr S and I visited here, on the off chance, last Saturday for lunch. As usual I chose from the specials board (chicken curry sizzler) and Mr S had steak. Both were lovely. I really don't know why we don't visit more often. Perhaps it's because our waist lines would expand ever further! Portion sizes are always generous here. There was a notice saying there will be a BBQ on Bank Holiday Monday - count us in!!!
