It's one of the last proper pubs and great price for a drink and to have a laugh with friends

Visited yesterday afternoon (1st October) and it was 'dead'. I heard that there are new owners.

Bar service is good but they should close the door to the kitchen. The smell of stale cooking fat is overpowering. I had to drink my beer outside.

We started here, wifey & I, on our pub crawl along Epping high St. Wifey had a double gin & lemonade & I had a Coors light as they didn't have a real ale. The round of drinks was £11.40 which is about the going rate. The whole pub could do with the inside being decorated as it is very old & run down. The locals didn't seem to mind as they were coming & going around 17:30 & enjoying themselves!!

I went here on Bank holiday Monday and was amazed at the social distancing rules being flouted. They had a live band which is definitely not allowed in such a small area during the pandemic. The staff made no effort to make sure that people were a safe distance apart. The bar staff told me that pub is currently waiting to be sold and developed into flats. It seems the Landlords are out to grab every penny they can before the place closes for good. When this comes at the cost of the customers health and safety this is not acceptable behaviour. The Council have now been informed of the shocking behaviour that's been happening here. Avoid at all costs.

Very nice looking pub inside and out I was working in the town and called in for a couple of drinks As soon as I went to the bar and ordered some drinks 3 locals started using foul language and threatening behaviour re my accent and being from the north. Not good at all especially as all three of them looked well over 55 and had clearly had way too much to drink

After too many bad dining experiences here I vowed never to return however a group of friends were having post dinner drinks here when I had an in depth chat with the new manager. He seemed to be really passionate about the place whilst mindful of the challenges that lay ahead. Last Sunday I decided to go for a late Sunday lunch with my wife and mother and father in law. We were pleasantly surprised by the standard of the food. It is certainly miles away from the often inedible stuff that used to get served up. There are obviously great improvements in the kitchen. The service was mixed as one waitress was on it but another totally not! However based on the food I would recommend that anyone who hasn’t been for a while to go back and give them a try - I think you’ll be glad you did.

Nothing more that you could ask for in an authentic, small-town pub

We were staying in a local hotel and chose this pub as the most likely looking place to be able to eat and have a beer. Bar staff looked incredulous that we would want food at 7pm. Was told the manager or chef was at the gym and unlikely to be doing food when they got back. Maybe OK for a drink, but didn't stay to find out as we also wanted to eat.

Had to wait an hour for food to be served, when it arrived the lasagna had a plastic splinter in it and my daughter's scampi was under cooked. Very poor.

Hadn't been for a while. Looked pretty much the same as before. Lots of locals. Good selection of beer and food. Large garden for outdoor seating.

The Duke is on the boarders of Epping High Road,the food is really good and can come in medium & large (eat it if you can) and is cooked and served good meals

First visit there, lovely old fashioned pub, good choice of beers, ales as well. Staff very friendly, good menu of non pretentious dishes, good portions and excellently priced with very good service, I recommend a visit.

This place could do with some serious TLC. Prices are ok but it’s extremely tired and looks dirty. I think if you’re a known face you’d probably get a very warm welcome but it’s not one to drop into for a drink whilst passing.

Went for Christmas dinner yesterday as a family of 11, great table layout with crayons and colouring paper with some small toys for the kids. Order for drinks taken at the table no queuing at the bar throughout the day. Service was great with plenty of time between courses, size of dinners were huge, really struggled to finish everything. Even though the bar staff were waiting after the pub closed to have their dinner we were never rushed. Definitely going to book for next year, thank you Sharon and all your staff

Worst hamburger ever. The lady at the bar insinuated that we didn't pay the check appealing us loudly. Never again. Nice chimney tho

Terrible beer, tasted like it had gone off - awful atmosphere, strange locals who make any visit awg full of travellers - will not be returning, this place is like a time machine going back 40 years and does not suit the area

Visited here one of my old locals to watch a World cup match, needed more bar staff on duty as we waited what was almost 10 minutes to get served.. Beer was good though and nice and cold. The 2 TV's need updating to a more accessible location so everyone can get a good veiw, as we were either blocked from seeing the whole screen by walls or columms, either that or other drinkers would complain you were in their way if you tried to gain any sort of vantage point.. Failing that a good atmosphere was generated. So in conclusion: More bar staff when events are on. Move TV's to more accessible viewing positions

Had a fantastic afternoon in the back garden where my boy played with other children and had good conversation with friendly locals and staff not to mention the pub grub is mainly home made and well worth the money.

I went with five friends to celebrate one of their birthdays. Three of us had battered fish, chips and peas. Unfortunately, there was far more batter than there was fish, and the peas were tinned, which none of us like. I have to say, though, the chips were delicious. The other three had pie and mash. I was put off my meal when that arrived - the pie was swimming in liquor to the extend that the top of it couldn't be seen, and there was no vegetable accompaniment. Even more liquor was brought over in a large jug. It would have been better had just the pie and mash been on the plate so that my friends could add the amount of liquor they wanted. When I go out to eat, the quality of a meal is important, but so is the presentation. I would have preferred more fish than batter and fresh peas rather than tinned, and my friends who had the pie and mash would have preferred not to see a pie swimming in liquor. Also, according to the menu we were supposed to get bread, but this failed to appear... Altogether quite disappointing, and we won't rush back.

This is a really nice country pub with a log fire in the winter. Really good food and substrate portions, and a good selection of beers and largers.

The Duke has, geographically, been my local since the Half Moon closed many years back and although I've been to the odd karaoke night (Friday's for those interested) I'd never ventured far enough to sample their menu. We chose a very quiet Sunday afternoon to give it a go and although we were made to wait a relatively long time for food, we were incredibly impressed with both the quality and quantity of our meals. I had the cod which was fantastically crispy and thankfully not overly greasy. My huge fish was accompanied by a massive serving of chunky chips which were also lovely. My girlfriend settled for the lasagne and was also pleasantly surprised by how hearty and tasty her meal was minus the slightly odd garlic bread. Friendly service, reasonable price and ridiculous portions, it's definitely worth dropping in if you're looking for pub grub in the Epping area. Positives; - Portion Size - Solid Pub Grub - Reasonably Priced - Indoor or Outdoor Seating - Lots of Choice Negatives; - Dated Surroundings - Somewhat Unorganized Service (meal came in drips and drabs) - Although Tasty the Meals Probably Wouldn't Satisfy Real Foodies

Nos ofrecieron una restringida - 6 opciones por plato, pero amplia variedad de menús y a presentar nuestras peticiones para principal y postre o plato principal y postre con un plan de estar unos días de antemano. Una vez que la gente nos sentaron, comidas eran entregados de manera eficiente y eficaz, asegurándose de que todo el mundo en una mesa fue servido en el mismo tiempo. El personal es amable y profesional, las porciones son generosas y sabrosa comida; tanto, que hablar de repetir el evento, pero en el verano y esta vez con perros.

Mi hijo había ordenado la oferta festiva de navidad para nosotros seis. Dada una selección de entrantes, platos principales, etc. Los seis de nosotros habíamos pedido cócteles de gambas. Las gambas eran grandes y tenían mucho sabor, servido en hojas frescas ensalada mixta. Para los platos principales, cinco había pedido carne y pedí un filete de salmón. También había una opción vegetariana asado o la tuerca o de Turquía. Este fue mucho mejor de lo que esperaba para la comida de pub. El ambiente era cálido y acogedor, con un tronco enorme y fuego de carbón. La comida era abundante, y tomó un poco. Todo era fresco. Mi filete de salmón era enorme y bien presentado, con un plato de verduras frescas y un tazón de experimentados patatas. Si pudiera manejar el postre, había una variedad de alrededor de siete postres en una tabla de tiza. La persona que nos sirvió, Debbie era cálido y amable, y no a ser abrumador. Muy contento con la calidad de la comida, el servicio, la limpieza y el ambiente y todos juntos a punta bien aporreados. Sin duda volveremos por otra comida, si no, simplemente para una bebida.

Pub agradable en un lugar encantador. Después de un largo paseo por el bosque nos sed y hambre para el almuerzo. El cordero asado, estaba un poco mejor que la carne asada, pero ambos eran sabrosos. We visit this pub quite. The pub is immaculate and the staff are so attentive.The pub also benefits a fabulous beer garden with soft play area for kids, this is great on sunny days and in the height of summer the BBQ hut opens for business.In my view, the good is second to none and David the Head Chef always turns out great, fresh food. He goes to the fish and meat market several times a week, so the food is always fresh.

Booked a table for a large party of 10 Saturday lunch time . We all had a really great time. Food was lovely traditional home cooked food at a very reasonable price. Open log fire on a cold winters day was lovely to walk into . The waitress/barmaid was brilliant, generous with extras like bread rolls and made us all feel very welcome. Lovely little pub :)

Went for lunch. The restaurant was empty so there was no atmosphere. The lady behind the bar left the pub to come and take our order. The food was very average. In its favour the place was clean and the bill for two with a drink each came to £23. However I think there are better places for lunch in this area.
