Unfortunately we were witness to one of the worst staff meetings whilst trying to have a relaxing coffee. The ‘manager’ spoke down to her staff and was frankly rude and patronising to them. Coffee is more like warm milk. Go somewhere else people. Shame because it looks good from the outside.

Went yesterday for lunch with a friend. Was told only sandwiches available. They got the sandwich order wrong. The glasses for the coke were hot!! Staff unfriendly. They started mopping the floor whilst we were eating! Then my plate was taken away before I had finished. Felt like we were being a nuisance. Would not recommend.

The Cheese Shop - no cheese, very odd. Staff friendly enough. Food and drinks were completely underwhelming and overpriced. Sandwich described as served with coleslaw, salad and crisps - we all got exactly 3 crisps, a bit of limp salad and a quarter of a tomato plus a spoon full of coleslaw, not good value

Visiting the beautiful village of Howden, we stopped for Breakfast at the oddly named Cheese Shop Cafe (no cheese in sight). As a lover of the Full English, I was disappointed in the so-called Yorkshire Breakfast. It tasted like it was cooked yesterday, Dried out Sausage, Bacon, and the fried egg was hard and dried out. I assume it was cooked yesterday or at least kept warm for a long time. We won't be returning.

Sometimes you need a bit of warmth to restore the soul and replenish the energy. The café looks inviting, but worryingly didn't sell cheese? Thought we’d try this place as it had a few customers in and we thought it must be ok. Well, obviously their clients have low expectations. I ordered the soup of the day (broccoli and Stilton)and a tuna and cheese panini. The soup was ok but I couldn’t taste the Stilton. The panini was ridiculous, a slither if tuna topped with stale (yes stale) pregrated cheese. I picked most of the cheese out as it wasn’t fresh and as they’re was hardly any tuna in it I basically used it as a soup dip. Also had a coffee which wasn’t good, the milk was overheated (it had skin on the top of it). I’d give this place a miss and definitely wouldn’t recommend My partner had a panini without the soup which looked a bit better than what I had.

I rarely submit reviews but this really warranted a mention. So today I thought I'd give Howden a visit & looked forward to my morning coffee. Where to start! As I ordered at the counter a lady walked in with the dogs drinking bowl to be refilled(there were at least 3 dogs with their owners sat outside), the lady behind the counter proceeded to take hold of the bowl with some of her fingers on the inside of the bowl, she filled it & handed it back not washing her hands she continued preparing drinks as I observed her placing same fingers inside of the cup's(now at this point I thought of asking for my money back or asking her to wash her hands given the possible places said dog's outside had probably licked before drinking from the water bowl) about this time a lady sat behind me started to bark like a dog very loudly & carry on a very loud conversation, at this point I thought I'd persevere & go sit outside, Bad Choice! Along come 2 business men very smartly dressed but unfortunately their rather loud conversation interspaced with swearing & expletives proceeded to finish off the ruinining of my quiet morning coffee. So to sum up!If you prefer good higiene Don't come here! If you like a relaxed morning coffee Don't come here! However! If you don't care about higiene & you like to listen to people barking & swearing then this is the place for you!

Jenny & I just stopped here for a coffee and cake en route back from the Yorkshire coast, and it's a fine little cafe. Just 3 chairs and a couple of small tables outside which were perfect for us to sit in the sun and enjoy our cappuccinos (& to listen in to all the local gossip being shared by a couple of people next to us). Service is slow (it's not Costa!) but friendly and the coffees themselves were good, as was the millionaire's shortbread we just had to have with it. Plenty of seats inside too and it's a popular place, with the usual mix of regulars, newspaper readers, a couple of customers on laptops and so on. Worth coming back to.

The Cheese Shop cafe is smart and comfortable. The Cheese Shop, in the centre of Howden, was a natural stopping off place on our way to the recent Howden Show. Next to the ancient Howden Minster this great location was equally matched by a sharp contemporary internal decor. Sadly, it didn't exactly feel like a cheese shop (just a small selection in an end chiller cabinet) - it was more a cafe/coffee shop. On this Sunday morning they were short-staffed. The staff were therefore distracted and appeared unwelcoming. A 10-minute wait for two coffees and no apology was disappointing.

I then approached the counter and asked why the cyclists had been given preferential treatment when everyone else was queuing. The young assistant said she didn't now and was quite rude. It *is* small with some limited seating outside, lovely for sunny days as it's tucked right by the Minster and we have taken our dogs to do just that on a few occasions. The staff are typical Yorkshire ladies, cheerful and straightforward. They can be a bit direct, which might not be to everyone's taste but I've never heard them be rude and on the occasions we've asked for things to be changed from what's on the menu, they've been ever so helpful. The food is lovely and the portion sizes are just right for lunch. There's a good selection of hot and cold food and it's reasonably priced. We paid just over £10 for 2 sandwiches and 2 drinks. We always try to stop here when we've been out in the local area with our dogs and will continue to do so!

My friend and I visited for an evening meal during Howden Late night opening and everything seemed too much trouble for the person serving us ( Maybe they were tired after such long opening hours)The table was wet and when we asked for it to be wiped she gave it a cursory swipe- we still couldn't put any thing on it! Then our order was taken by shouting across the counter to us. Finally the 'Homemade chilli' arrived. To be fair the reheated chilli was fine but the sour cream AND guacamole were both from a plastic bottle and tasted synthetic.Howden has a wealth of good local tea shops and we as local people will definitely not be choosing to visit here again.

Went here with a group of friends on a Saturday morning and was surprised at the size. It's like a tardis. The breakfasts are really good and the service is brilliant. Everything was cooked to perfection and enough toast to feed an army which is a nice change from the typical one slice per person. I would recommend The Cheese Shop to anyone.

We arrived late afternoon after a wedding the previous day, needing light sustenance! We received it in the form of homemade tomato soup, fabulous!!! The tea cake was so soft and the soup was delicious!!! We weren't rushed even though they were obviously about to close. Wonderful menu lovely food. I recommend

A small deli/cafe in the town centre. A very nice, clean place. We were a bit confused at first whether to wait for a waitress to take our order, until we noticed a sign near the till informing us to place our order there. My wife and I both ordered the full English. The breakfast was OK, however bacon seemed a bit leathery and sausages a bit soft and and on the cheap side. However prices were reasonable and staff were alright. We would call again, probably for a panini or a sandwich or something else to try!

We stop here regularly for a coffee en route to West Yorkshire. It is a lovely place to sit outside in the sunshine and admire the beautiful Minster. Staff are friendly and accommodating - what more to want?

Sarah was very attentive. The rest of the staff need to be trained by her. On booking to see if we could have a table the man wasn't, quite in the room

Brie, as discussed as in the cheese, absolute delight, what a barmaid! Signposted me to everything I was drinking and offers, could jot have asked more of her, saleswoman in the making! We will be back, with child and dog 😊 cannot recommend any higher

We waited an hour for eggs and toast. Owner only cared about Door Dash orders going out the door. Given that Courtenay has so many great casual dining places, give this one a pass. Give your business to restaurants that care about providing good service to their customers.

Went today for lunch , I decided i was having soup , they said it was the last portion so that was fine , I asked for no bread which , when it came it was the smallest half bowl of soup for £6.25 , I didn’t want anything knocking off for not having the bread but did expect a full dish, looking at the menu I could of had a small breakfast, or sandwich for about the same price , it’s soup where do they get over £6 for it!!
