Excellent service, wonderful food and with a good choice. My wife is coeliac and requires gluten free food. It is a medical condition so eating out is difficult. The Charlton Arms managed this issue with a great deal of care. We were reassured by their approach and professional attention to detail. We had a wonderful evening out and have no hesitation in recommending the restaurant. We will definitely return when next in the area. Thank you for a most enjoyable evening. Booking a table is recommended.

Hadn't booked, but they were able to accommodate our group of 4 albeit with a half-hour wait. A seat in the comfy lounge and a drink soon passed the time before we were shown to our table in the conservatory overlooking the fast flowing River Teme. Orders taken promptly and politely and it wasn't long before the food appeared. Large portions of fish and chips, a delightful crab salad and a park escalope. Not fine dining, but good well presented and well prepared food accompanied by a carafe of wine. All reasonably priced. Car park has limited space and can quickly become cramped. Will return.

I’m not quite sure why this appears in the Michelin guide, as we felt this was upper end pub food. Very attentive friendly service, but for being a limited menu, the food felt mass produced, I had the steak which was cooked exactly the way I asked and reasonable quality, but our other dishes were bland. The one thing that saved our meal was the local cheese at the end, very good quality and great to share. The wine list is good too. Sorry we only scored you 3 out of 5, but we felt the food would have been more inventive. PS beautiful setting at dusk

We are on holiday in the area and did a bit of research before booking, with plenty of positive comments steering us to give the restaurant a go. We were promptly shown to out table with a lovely view overlooking the river. The roast lamb was cooked to perfection, being pink and tender. The haddock came with minted peas and chunky chips which also went down well. The service was good and it was a relaxing evening as we were allowed to sit and enjoy our meal without being hurried out the door. This is clearly a popular restaurant and it is recommended you book in advance as people were being turned away as the restaurant was fully booked the night we visited and this was midweek.

We had high expectations but were disappointed by the standard. Main course crab salad for example came with a very notional uninteresting side salad. Service was friendly enough but rushed.

Superb evening by the window with late sunshine streaming through and sparkling on the river. Three people, testing different dishes, and not a complaint among us. The asparagus tortelloni needs a special mention, as it was divine. Very accommodating service, good wine, great ambience (bar one large noisy group). It will be a memorable birthday for my friend.

We visited the Charlton Arms for dinner on a Sunday evening. The place light and airy and the restaurant split into a couple of areas. There are two roast options and some pub classic menu choices available. We had the Roast Beef and the Asparagus & Lemon Tortelloni. Both dishes were perfectly cooked and the roast beef very tender. There is also a roof terrace which is open air and had a perfect view looking up at the town and river. As it was a warm evening the dining room Was quite warm. it would have been nice to have the opportunity to eat outside or have some additional ventilation. Other than that, it was an excellent meal and the staff were really nice.

We loved our experience eating here. Everything we ate was delicious - particular favourites were the asparagus tortelloni, pork Milanese, chocolate fondant and lemon meringue sorbet. Good service and great views of Ludlow and the river.

This was first time of staying at Charlton Arms and it was wonderful. Staff very welcoming, friendly helpful and professional. Room overlooking the river was beautiful, spacious very clean and quiet . Lots of additional touches to make stay very comfortable. Food was excellent and service very good . Car park right next to pub ideal and only about 10 min walk into Ludlow town . Would definitely recommend Charlton Arms and will be returning

Nice service. Nice to have a drink in the lounge area before dinner. Lovely view of the river from the restaurant. Food was great, except for the soggy skin on the cod 🤨. The gentleman who seemed to be running the restaurant was a little bit too bossy with the other staff. Recommend it though

A fabulous Sunday lunch..definitely the best in Ludlow. Beautiful beef. The six of us all cleared our plates! Loved the Rioja, and our Martinis to finish off the meal went down extremely well. Service was outstanding. Thank you Gemma and other staff for making us so welcome. Looking forward to returning very soon.

As we were celebrating our anniversary we were determined to not allow what happened initially to spoil our day, but my low scares have to reflect our disappointment! I searched for a dog friendly restaurant and The Charlton Arms came up. In the Open Table link there was nowhere to opt for a dog friendly area so I wrote in the notes instead making it clear we were bringing our dog. I also sent a message on facebook messenger asking for confirmation that someone had noted we were bringing our dog ( I didn’t receive confirmation but I could see someone had read it! We arrived early so we’re happy to have a drink while our table was prepared. However, a rather sullen waitress came to tell us that as we had not mentioned when booking that we had a dog they had reserved us a table in the restaurant- which was NOT dog friendly. I pointed Ted out that I HAD and explained how, and also showed her my messenger message!!! Her response was quite flippant as she said well nobody read the notes!!!! At no time did anyone actually APOLOGISE for what was not my fault, but we were told there was a table on the terrace. Had it not been a gloriously sunny day the table they offered us would have been fine, but it was the only one without a sun parasol and when I asked if there was possibly a different one, the waitress ( a different one e) simply smiled and said ‘no’! Again, no ‘sorry’! Within a couple of minutes a couple vacated their table, which had a parasol so we were co fused! Another waiter came by and we asked him if we could move onto it and he said very politely, ‘yes of course. You can sit wherever you like’ I have no idea why the girls who showed us to our seat would not have been aware that a table was about to become vacant, and in fact another two, very quickly. The waiter who also then took our order, was very hospitable and treated us as the customers and was delightful. We would have given him a tip but his shift finished before we left! I’m awaiting reply to email

Despite booking well in advance and despite free tables we were seated overlooking the car park. We expected the better tables to be busy later on but they remained empty. The staff seemed rather uniterested and not very friendly which surprised us as Ludlow people in other places were extremely friendly. The wine was very expensive and the food is quite pricey but was good. I don’t think the experience quite lived up to our expectations, especially the view which could have been much nicer.

An excellent meal with a fabulous view. Lovely server, reasonable price. Had been a bit put off on arrival when bar staff served two pints of froth and didn't seem to understand why I was waiting, and still perplexed when I asked for them to be topped up once they'd settled. Combined with GB news running on the massive TV screen, it was an inauspicious start. A rather brusque Maitre d' just made us more unsettled. However, when taken to the restaurant things really improved - our table had full views of the river, interesting choices available on the menu, and the food was really good. We had a very pleasant and helpful server, and enjoyed the whole experience.

This is a beautiful place to eat with great atmosphere, wonderful views of the river, accommodating, well presented attentive staff and exquisitely prepared food. I ate two meals there and the choice of food was perfect and both meals were utterly delicious and made with high quality ingredients. I really could fault anything. Would highly recommend. It was busy on both midweek nights I ate there and I think that says a lot about how good it is.

A beautiful setting with spectacular views over the river. Ducks below us and swallows above. Very nice atmosphere in this traditional pub and although the England game was on in the room next door, there wasn’t much noise at all. Great staff, delicious food and extremely good value.

Finding the Charlton Arms in the Michelin Guide, we expected good things but were underwhelmed at what was offered. I wanted a pre dinner drink but was rushed through to a table in a large dining room which had great views but lacked ambiance, and told that they would bring a drink to the table. I was then left for ten minutes without being asked what I wanted… the menu was different to the one posted at the door on the same day, and the vegetarian choices were limited. My dish was only just okay and excessively creamy. The staff were all lovely, and very friendly but lacked service finesse.

We were in Ludlow for a week & ate at the Charlton Arms twice. The food was excellent & the service second to none.

Lovely place with nice views if you get allocated the right table, unfortunately we didn’t and we asked to be seated elsewhere. We were told all other tables were reserved, we ordered, ate our meal and paid the bill before anybody else came and took their reserved seats. Shame this happened as the service and the food was excellent, it would be a good idea for them to put a table plan on the booking form then there wouldn’t be any reason to complain. Lovely place would recommend with no hesitation just ask for a table with a view of the river

The Charlton Arms is superbly situated on the Ludford Bridge, Ludlow. There is an open terrace above the dining room which offers splendid views of the adjacent River Teme. Our bedroom was on the second floor which was a pain as we are elderly and infirm. In hindsight I should have reserved an alternative bedroom. The bedroom was very comfortable, with good amenities and quality fittings. Excellent wines and beers. Efficient service. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal. High standard of cuisine. Adjacent large gravel surface car park but no disabled bay (s).My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay.

remember views are always personal. but on a hot day with a spaniel we were well looked after. lovely seating with an open window and extra water for all. food was lovely: nothing left. it is becoming our regular treat . staff are very welcoming and make you feel comfortable. with good food ,what more do you want. nice to have the choice between the more formal restaurant area and the various lounge , terrace choices.

Its been a couple of years since our last visit. Ive never been able to get a table as its very busy! But they are now open Mondays and we took friends. We were delighted with the food, service and menu ! So glad to be able to get a table again !

Disappointing, after reading reviews. Good location and excellent fish soup. Good service. But our main courses of roast beef and pork were very tired and swimming in indifferent gravy. The apple sauce seemed out of a tin. The atmosphere/ambience was very pubby and not a place for a special meal.

Super location with great views on the edge of Ludlow overlooking the river. Good gluten-free choice. Crab salad was outstanding. Service for dessert could have been a little quicker.

Pleasant restaurant overlooking the river. Attentive service without being too much. Excellent menu to choose from. The lamb was superb. Extensive wine list to suit all pockets. Deserves its reputation as a Gastropub, but also functions well as a pub away from the restaurant area.

This was my first visit to The Charlton Arms and I’m sure it won’t be the last! Lovely ambience (the stylish dining room has a glorious view of the river), a warm welcome, delicious food, good well-priced wine list. We took a friend with us and all liked it a lot.

We had a table with lovely views over the river. We were rather disappointed with the limited selection available on the menu, but it was a Sunday.

They were very busy with two large parties ahead of us so it took a while for the food to arrive. However the drinks service was swift and our main dishes arrived 45 minutes after our arrival. The food was delicious. Their Sunday roasts always are good, my asparagus tortellini with wild garlic pesto and Parmesan was outstanding and seasonal.

Stunning views at this restaurant. Very quiet, which was not an issue. Not an extensive menu, but why the dressed crab does not come with bread is a mystery, hence a side order is needed at extra charge. I have to say I’ve never known crab not come with bread as standard. The portions are not huge, but are well presented and cooked to perfection. I would visit again, but would check the menu in advance Cask ales were in good order and service was good. Overall it was expensive compared to other restaurants, but nice for a special occasion. The key selling point is the stunning location and views.

We ate lunch here for a birthday celebration and the staff were great in letting me bring balloons and also said I could bring a cake. Staff were attentive and patient as we did lots of talking and took ages to choose from the menu. Sat in the conservatory and had a great view of the river.

Decent food however a very restricted menu with limited choice. Fair value for money.

Absolutely superb experience for special supper with friends. Menu was excellent with a great range of quality dishes to suit us all. Service was fabulous, not over bearing just professional and attentive.

My Wife had a limited choice of the menu due to the fish and game content. I on the other hand was very happy with the menu. The Fish Soup was outstanding. All the dishes we had were super. We would check the menu before dining again. We woul not hesitate to dine again if my wife was happy.

On a sunny evening sitting on the deck of the Charlton Arms, overlooking the river and its bridge, it is hard to imagine a more delightful place anywhere in Shropshire. Service was professional and enthusiastic but one mark removed due to an incorrect order being placed with the kitchen, followed by a delay in getting the right dishes. We enjoyed our evening.

A favourite eaterie for us, so booked a table for our anniversary celebration. A little disappointed that the menu choices were a little less interesting than on our previous visit, but the food was still very good. The time before, less than 2 weeks ago, it had been absolutely amazing. Keep up the standard we come to expect.

First time in Ludlow and we chose to stay here . What a wonderful find. Fantastic setting by the river and our room was superb. We ate in the restaurant in the evening which was excellent, very good for gluten free. I had gluten free fish and chips and my party had the burger. Fab staff too. The breakfast was equally as good. We will be returning here for sure. 👌🏻

Superb meal - we enjoyed specials of guinea fowl and pork loin, and great local cheeses for dessert. Service staff were lovely - attentive, polite and friendly.

We went for Sunday lunch which is something we never do as our own Sunday dinner is so good but when we looked at the menu we thought we would try it while we away. The food was fantastic and the staff were very friendly. Also for the quality of food and service we found it very reasonably priced. Can’t wait to go back.

Myself and family visited this weekend and booked the three riverside suites. All 3 rooms are lovely. The suite, room 11 is amazing. However unfortunately that’s where my review goes down hill. The front of house gentleman had absolutely no presence at all and made little effort to both with customers. Jules one of the waitresses was amazing and should have a senior role running this establishment. Very knowledgable, very caring. Now the food was shocking. Of the 6 evening meals only 2 were decent. My first steak came raw instead of medium. By the time I got my second steak our party had finished eating and the steak was inedible as so rough. Certainly not a £33 sirloin! My sister’s steak again sirloin, was mostly fat. The two cheeseburgers were dry and tough and the salad with them was soggy. The cheeseboards were small for the price with only 3 small pieces of cheese. Breakfast the following day didn’t improve with the bacon being tough, very overcooked and salty. The sausage wasn’t much better also quite disappointed to hear that Cedric doesn’t cook any of the food. One of the reasons to book this place was due to The relationship to Claude who is an amazing chef plus the information on the website implies Cedric is the chef there but clearly not. This is a lovely located hotel with amazing views and rooms. We weren’t the only table to have problems with the food so did two other tables behind us in the restaurant. Such a-shame the food is not good as everything else is lovely

Delicious Sunday lunch yet again! Friendly efficient staff in a great spot overlooking river. Nothing too much trouble and all served promptly and with a smile. Would recommend to try the Sunday lunch you won’t be disappointed.
