The Charlton Arms Terrace Restaurant in Shropshire

Food was excellent but it was Valentines day and I think they had booked too many people, as we were put on a table in the reception area and not the restaurant. I was freezing when the main door kept opening and closing.

Lovely pub/restaurant in romantic location by the river. The food was well-cooked and presented and was good value - I had fish soup and lamb. I liked that the plate was full; not stingy portions. Meal included good quality veg. I would recommend arriving early for a drink beforehand in the cosy bar or in the lounge.

Lovely setting, dined on a Sunday evening and was disappointed with the limited menu options as no specials were available other than a pork or beef Sunday roast. What we had was fine, it was just that our expectations were higher.

Lovely lunch. Service excellent. Our 2 dogs enjoyed it too! Didn’t spot any otters - hopefully next time!

Nice evening at the Charlton Arms after hearing good things. Our food was very tasty and reasonably priced. I would note that there are very few options for vegetarians and nothing on the night for vegan diets (not that this affected us). It would be nice to have some more exciting mocktail options for those of us unable or choosing not to drink, but the softs were fine. The vibe was laidback and comfortable, even though it wasn't a popular season (January) and the town was generally quiet.

Been here before had a wonderful time. This time we felt a little let down by the Sunday roast beef was exquisite as were roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings, however the vegetables were a little disappointing no cabbage just parsnips and carrots diced up and quite hard. Felt it could’ve been improved.

Expectations not met today. I ordered lamb shank and expected it to fall apart but it clung resolutely to the bone (although the taste was good) - the vegetables were slightly under cooked and had a “reheated taste”. My partner ordered fish and chips which were OK although the batter was a little thick. Overall an average meal for high price.

Dined here whilst staying in Ludlow for few days. Food was absolutely amazing and staff very friendly nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely dine here again and would definitely recommend it as a must place to dine

Fabulous choices of starters, mains and desserts. The hardest part was picking one. All the courses chosen were beautifully presented, making the eating even more of a pleasure. All the food was delicious. A perfect evening out.

We had a beautiful meal at the Charlton Arms, we couldn’t decide what to have so asked for recommendations, which we went with and I have to say both meals were very tasty. I have to congratulate The Charlton Arma on their staff all were very friendly but also professional and very knowledgeable. I think this maybe our new go to restaurant.

We were dealt with in a very friendly manner. The menu was small which made us feel confident the food would be of good quality. Our expectations were well met as the food, particularly the duck main, was outstanding. We couldn’t fault the main course at all, it was delicious and beautifully presented.

Three of us dined at 730. The staff were polite, professional and courteous. Both starters were excellent, especially the sxitch egg which is worth a visit alone. The downside was the haddock main course. The batter(gluten free) was disgusting and the fish was very dry and overcooked . Panntone dessert was excellent but sticky toffee pudding was tiny and rather tasteless. Overall we had a good night and would return but the haddock main course needs looking at as it is pretty bad.

Our table of 2 arrived and we’re sat on time even though there were three large parties in. We were served promptly with a smile and never once felt rushed. The pork loin was to die for. Seriously best meal out I’ve had in a long time.

Delicious well presented food. Slow service, we expected a decent interval between courses but on this occasion it seemed a little excessive. A pity because everything else was exceptional. And our overall experience wasn’t spoiled in any way.

We were booked in for lunch at the Charlton Arms during the busy Christmas period. The food was excellent. We had burgers and fish and chips from the lunch menu and the food really was very good indeed. The thing let it down was the brusque and at times rude attitude of our server. It seemed everything was a problem even mentioning that my friend had a nut allergy was taken as an issue rather than something he could easily deal with. A real shame as it let down what was a tasty lunch.in a stunning venue.

Four of us had lunch yesterday. A nice pub but food very disappointing. My wife ordered fish pie, which bore no resemblance to any fish pie she had ever had before, it was inedible, she left most of it. My goulash was very average, the vegetarian meal ordered had to be changed because there were some ingredients unavailable. Only the fish and chips ordered by my other friend was satisfactory, but the chips had been refried so much they were very greasy. We couldn’t order a large glass of Sauvignon Blanc, only medium was available. The waitress gave us an alternative option of a caraf. Obviously a marketing ploy. Overall a disappointing experience and not value for money.

Our Sunday Lunch visit was classy without being arsey! Staff were superb from the 1st drink in the bar until we said goodbye. Our food was on point, beef and pork outstanding! Thank you, you clever, clever lot!

Great welcome, very friendly staff. The choice of meals was really good, we chose the roast dinner and it was delicious.

Great surroundings relaxed atmosphere pre dinner drinks , no rush, good menu but chose the lovely roasts and shared the meats. Fabulous Yorkshire pudding too. Very pleasant attentive waitress Declined dessert as savoured main dish but they looked yummy. Coffee to finish watching the river flow Overall a lovely meal plus we redeemed a voucher so win win

A great meal as usual - lovely staff and service. The only negative would be the slightly mediocre choice of main courses - burgers and fish & chips is a bit average compared to what we've been used to. With that said, everything we had was perfectly cooked and presented and the Charlton remains a favourite for us.

We went to The Charlton Arms for my birthday dinner which was unfortunately on a Sunday night. We found it in the Michelin guide. The menu (apparently because it was Sunday) was very limited and really all there was was Sunday lunchtime leftovers - the Yorkshire pudding was very stale and old. Staff were not engaging or invested in us having a good time. All very boring, average. Room was cold, characterless. Not worthy of being in Michelin. Disappointing. Maybe better during the week when full menu on.

Excellent choice for a high end pub supper. Outside in the summer next to the river would be perfect. Would be perfect.

We live in Ludlow and the Charlton is definitely one of favourite places to eat in the town, as food is consistently excellent quality.

Top-notch nosh! I’ve had good meals, but tonight’s experience was up there with the best. The beef Wellington was superb. My wife had the duck and was hugely impressed. Highly recommended!

Great choice of well made cocktails, excellent French 75’s. We had fish soup, pulled oxtail wagyu, roast pork and truffle tortellini, it was all delicious and the portions were huge. Great value, highly recommend.

Great food. Lovely venue overlooking the river. Dog friendly but would advise you to pre-book to get a table. A regular haunt for us as have family in town, but would recommend and will be back v soon.

The barmaid needs to learn some customer service she was rude it was very uncomfortable & unprofessional my husband is hard of hearing & she took pleasure in belittling him at the bar

Good food, well cooked and presented. Came with friends after a day at the races and no one was disappointed. I had the pork loin in black pudding and Parma ham. My only remark would be that the black pudding was quite mild and the treacle tart not very treacly. Lovely views of the river.

Lovely meal but I did miss having some greens on my plate. We were served only root vegetables, swead, turnips and potatoes 🥲

I found the Charlton arms in the Michelin guide. Don’t think it should be there. Starter was ok my roast dinner was not up to much. The beef was tough and the veg was basic

A lovely waitress called Jules attended us. She was polite, efficient and cheerful. Food was lovely, we have been many times and we always enjoy the food.

Sunday lunch was very good. Fish soup starter and beef main course were excellent. The beef was especially good and served rare, as requested. Service was efficient and friendly.

Everything was perfect the food and the staff were excellent.It was our first visit and well worth the one hours journey by car to get there. We spent the rest of the day in Ludlow and the weather was dry and sunny after the storms of the day before.

Lovely place for lunch just over the river from Ludlow. Super food and very attentive staff make it spot on.

This place has amazing views of the river and I was really looking forward to my birthday lunch unfortunately it was a complete let down I ordered the sirloin steak which was cooked perfectly however it is served with such a huge slab of Cafe de Paris butter (literally the size of the steak) that as it melted my plate and steak turned into a bright orange oil slick and eating it was like eating a slimy eel as each bite made my mouth so oily!!! I had nowhere to tip my chips out of the metal Container or they would have been soggy and inedible so I couldn’t eat them either as they were hotter than the sun inside and not actually that nice anyway I can make better at home!!! My partner had the burger and the bun at the bottom was so soggy he had to eat it with a knife and fork as he couldn’t pick it up!!! I’ve given it 2 stars as they served a lovely Prosecco and a decent sticky toffee pudding although the 1 mouthful serving of ice cream wasn’t even worth putting on top!!! Definitely will not be returning it was a complete disappointment

The service was very attentive without being fussy and the flavours in the food were outstanding. I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you want somewhere a bit special.

Our room was fabulous, large comfy bed, separate lounge and balcony overlooking the river. (Room 11). The staff were lovely. Good choice of menu for dinner and breakfast. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to others

A very nice Sunday roast dinner, served in a lovely river view space. Portions were very generous. The young staff very friendly and helpful.

Even though it was a rainy grey day, so couldn’t go out onto the terrace but lovely building, great views from huge glass windows. Staff totally on point, swift, polite, knowledgeable and friendly. Food was really delicious. Large portions. Piping hot. Definitely recommend.

Excellent service, wonderful food and with a good choice. My wife is coeliac and requires gluten free food. It is a medical condition so eating out is difficult. The Charlton Arms managed this issue with a great deal of care. We were reassured by their approach and professional attention to detail. We had a wonderful evening out and have no hesitation in recommending the restaurant. We will definitely return when next in the area. Thank you for a most enjoyable evening. Booking a table is recommended.

Good food and service in a nice venue. Parking was not easy.

Hadn't booked, but they were able to accommodate our group of 4 albeit with a half-hour wait. A seat in the comfy lounge and a drink soon passed the time before we were shown to our table in the conservatory overlooking the fast flowing River Teme. Orders taken promptly and politely and it wasn't long before the food appeared. Large portions of fish and chips, a delightful crab salad and a park escalope. Not fine dining, but good well presented and well prepared food accompanied by a carafe of wine. All reasonably priced. Car park has limited space and can quickly become cramped. Will return.

Really lovely food.I felt the staff were tired and everything was a bit of an effort. We were celebrating my son's GCSE results and I had flagged this but nothing was done to make a fuss of him and congratulate him on his achievements. That would have been a really lovely gesture.
