The Charleton Inn in South Hams

We've been very happy on Thursday's steak night, we really like the cooking (charcoal grill-like) of good quality meats and at a very fair price - after choosing the meat you can add what you like, paying a small amount to basically get the stuff you want and not pay for things you don't like as much. Good beer, good service and friendly atmosphere too!

Can’t fault this little gem…the atmosphere that Lou and team created the time they stop and chat to you…the food though is something else. I love food! Roast dinners especially and iv never had a roast this good ever! In fact since that said roast iv not tried cooking one as it was that insane what’s the point…tonight I had the chicken liver parfait to start that honestly I could just live on…I told Lou I’d like to just have it on tap! It’s so smooth and sooo good. My steak was was perfectly cooked and can’t fault it but that chicken liver parfait I want again and again well done guys and hats off chef…you know your stuff…good luck with the move. You both deserve it xxx

The labneh with tomato consomme was unusual and completely delicious. One of the best dishes I've ever eaten. All the food we ordered was well presented and full of flavour. The person running the bar and restaurant was friendly, efficient and calm, despite a surprise party descending unexpectedly. A thoroughly enjoyable lunch.

Excellent food, fish was perfection! Avoid the caper sauce though, very very salty

Stopped here for a meal while driving past, really glad we did. My wife and I had fish and chips which was really lovely. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Had the garlic prawns here as a snack with a pint.So blimmin good.Garlicky, buttery and perfectly cooked.Was very impressed.The chef knows what he is doing(I asked, it is a he.)It came with a piquant fresh roquette and onion salad to cut the richness.This couple are a good team doing great things.All the best.

What a wonderful and super delicious surprise Charleton Inn was! Me and my partner booked it as we went for a day trip to Salcombe so decided to stop here for food. I don't have enough words to describe how amazing the Sunday roast was, how lovely Lou was and welcoming, great atmosphere and one of the best Sunday roasts I had so far! There is no great place without great, quality people, thank you team Charleton for what you do, every single day! 🥂💛

Absolutely love this place! We have been several times on Sundays and the food is fabulous! The owner is lovely and the staff are so very kind. The food offerings are delicious and cooked to perfection! It does not disappoint. We never leave hungry.

The food is pricey but very good and service was friendly and efficient. However for a pub serving real ales, it was disappointing. 2 different beers, were both flat and slightly off. Shame.

Popped in for an impromptu lunch today and yet again blown away with food! Food/service exceptional as always!

Went for our first meal as a family at the pub and our expectations were exceeded. The food was delicious! My brother and I have severe allergies and the Charleton is amazing at dealing with them, they ensure we eat tasty, flavourful meals which we can safely eat (which sadly is not the norm as 'plain' food is normally the go to). Lou is incredibly kind and so are the rest of the team. By far our favourite dinner we have eaten out in a long time. Would recommend this lively pub to anyone who wants top quality food with a pub atmosphere. Couldn't ask for more. We have eaten in many restaurants in the area and this one is definitely our new favourite. I didn't take any pictures of the main course as it looked so nice we started eating straight away, but I got a few pictures of the puddings which my parents loved.

Visited this pub September 2023, the food is excellent (try the mussels 🤤) loved the atmosphere and the staff are lovely 🥰 I will definitely revisit in the very near future 😁

The best roast around & super friendly service. Came after a recommendation & we were certainly not disappointed. Cosy, welcoming modern pub with 5star service & food. If your local & haven’t been, then make the effort to go as it’s well worth it & inside is super nice. Best thing is that they serve roast until 5pm meaning those working can still enjoy a late roast. We will be back to enjoy more lush meals. Thank you

First time visit to The Charlton Inn for us and we were very impressed.accomodated our party of 8 and dog at short notice.Really welcoming and friendly hosts on arrival. Menu and food was very very good.our party ordered The Monkfish,Burgers,Steak and a Vegan dish and everyone really enjoyed their meals.4 of us had dessert Sticky Toffee pudding which was just outstanding.The kitchen at The Charlton Inn produce and serve outstanding food in such lovely surroundings. Really looking forward to going back for absolute sure. Thank you to The Charlton Inn team for looking after us. We really enjoyed our visit.

Went for dinner with local bell ringing group. The beer being served was Dartmoor Jail and Salcombe Gold. The latter is pale, hoppy and refreshing. I could have drowned in it, it was so drinkable. Food is steak, lamb and fish, at their best, all of which are locally sourced. Cooked superbly, presented as you would wish it and served with a smile by the welcoming staff. Please keep this pub open. It is a gem. It is up to us, the punter.

Absolutely delicious roast! Stumbled across this lovely pub by complete chance ( others all closed on route!). So pleased as the staff were lovely and the food was wonderful! We had the Asian mussels which were so yummy and the lamb roast which was excellent! We even both had dessert as the food was so good. The pub is dog friendly and we loved how accommodating the staff were. Definitely recommend!

We've eaten here a few times now and the fish dishes, roasts and more recently the venison have all been beautifully cooked and presented, and all have been delicious. The service from Lou and Carla has been excellent, both friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommended!

Wow! A wonderful warm and welcoming pub, beautifully cooked food! We came for the Thursday steak night and it was sooo good! It has a lovely inviting atmosphere and such friendly staff, well worth a visit. We we will definitely be back!

Since Lou and James arrived, The Charleton just keeps getting better and better. The food is absolutely stunning; consistently delicious. Lou and the staff are always so welcoming and friendly. It has become one of our favourite places to frequent-it’s a wonderful local pub.

I cannot praise this pub enough!! The most fantastic roast I’ve had in years. Fab chef and his partner who was waitressing is ABSOLUTELY delightful!! Please support this amazing place because they truly deserve to be held in high esteem!! We will return 🙌🏼

We have been coming to the Charleton for a number of years but it has really stepped up a notch in recent months. The new menu is fantastic and reasonable (lunch menu favourites- treacle cured roast beef bap, moules), dinner (superb steak and a range of great specials). Lots of locally sourced food). It is an incredibly welcoming pub (Lou and James are brilliant) and has everything we could possibly want from a local. We are very lucky indeed. Special mention for the kids menu too.

Stopped in for lunch on our way back to our caravan, so pleased we did. Exceptional food! Received a lovely warm welcome and great service. Thankfully we had camped not too far from home so will definitely be making the most and heading back here soon.

Since Lou & James have been running the Charleton it’s become a firm local favourite. The atmosphere is lovely - with great ambience, music and lighting - and they are both so welcoming. The menu is ideal, with enough choice to please everyone, but not too overwhelming. James served the best skate wing I’ve ever had - twice!! Cooked to perfection with the most delicious buttery sauce and sides, I can’t recommend it enough. This is a great pub for a friendly drink, quality bar snack or delicious meal out. You’d be hard pressed to find a better local, and team behind it.

We ordered the sea bass fish and we were surprisingly amazed by the quality of the food! This high quality is very rare in a pub in the UK! I highly recommend this place.

Modernized from years back. Sadly this has made it very noisy, and it has lost its atmosphere. Staff delivered drinks promptly, but took over 30minutes to take our order. Food was very nice, and the Roast Beef was pink, and very tender. However, a very extravagant three thick slices, whilst not a complaint, was just too much for all of us. It would be more profitable to cut down a slice from each plate. We hate waste, but just could not eat it all. Parking is limited, so for anyone with mobility issues, not good if you have to park up the incline on the residential road.

We ate here twice during our travels from Australia. The fish of the day was incredibly well priced and an absolute knockout. We came back for Sunday roasts - perfectly cook slightly pink roast beef with all the trimmings and delectable lemon posset for desert. Our toddler was made very welcome too. Prices are the same as everywhere else but the difference is in the quality of the food - it’s a fine dining experience at pub prices.

Stopped in for an impromptu dinner at our local (first time since it’s been taken over). The steak was absolutely amazing . One of the best I’ve had in a long time. Lovely friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere. Will definitely be returning. Many thanks. Alex and Katie

Outstanding meal with excellent service. The Market Fish menu was superb, hard to choose as everything sounded so yummy. I had the Brixham Market skate wing and my husband had the bass. Both were beautifully cooked and delicious. We had a great evening and will definitely be back.

What a lovely pub; and great food and staff to go with it! Confit of duck, hake and rhubarb panna cotta all very good indeed.

Our second meal here under the new regime. Very difficult to find fault with anything frankly. Real ales are very well kept , wines are just what you want in a pub. Super friendly front of house and someone in the kitchen who knows what they are doing. But it is still a pub atmosphere thankfully. We have had moules , confit duck , hake which would put a few more expensive places to shame. Really enjoyed it and food service is ALL DAY which for those of us who like to eat at early times is great. Great experience

Top quality food and brilliant service!

Staff very friendly, tasty food but portion size for starters and main courses were very minimal, particularly the fish chowder. Prices are on the expensive side. Ordered bread to bulk it out and was charged £3 for the smallest slice! When I mentioned it to the waitress, she very kindly took it off the bill. Nevertheless, an expensive meal for what it was.

Friendly staff & relaxed atmosphere.Small plates very much like Tapas& delicious menu.The pork belly was spot on & the mussels delicious.Perhaps some veggie sides would be good but the menu was creative.The food will appeal to a food lover,but perhaps some homemade pizzas or pasta might appeal for those with children.Being a village pub means it will become a. Place to Socialise.Having outside facilities will be great for locals & walkers alike.We’ll done for bringing the pub back to life!Sunday lunches superb but probably need to book!

Loved it! Quality roast and pleasant atmosphere.

The restaurant offered a selection of tapas-style dishes which we shared among ourselves - the food was delicious, and it was great to be able to try such a wide selection of different and interesting things. The service was brilliant - attentive and friendly. Would recommend (especially the apple crumble)!

Had a family birthday celebration there. 13 of us and the food was very good and the service was also great, friendly and professional. Yiannis did a great job looking after us all as a party. Would definitely recommend 👌

Had Sunday Lunch at this lovely village pub. It was one of the best meals I've had in a long time, served by very friendly staff, who can't do enough for you. It's so good to have our village pub open again and has given the village its soul back. Jack is a great host.

Sunday lunch here was amazing excellent value for money made even better by the service received from Jack, great front of house, lovely atmosphere in a proper pub will be a frequent visitor.

Lovely venue, stopped for a quick drink and was welcomed by a very friendly chap behind the bar. Served quickly with a fresh cold lager. Was nice to have some conversation as was on my own. He genuinely seemed as though he was interested in my day! For a quiet village it was fairly busy but still cosy with the candles and decorations. Will definitely return if I am in the area.
