This was a first time order for a special anniversary. We were meant to be going out but I wasn't feeling too good (I have Fibromyalgia) so we decided to order a posh meal instead of the usual takeaway fare. The Bruschetta starter tasted strongly of basil and had melted cheese overpowering the tomatoes. I have never had Bruschetta cooked like that and I've eaten in many Italian restaurants including real ones in Venice and Rome. It's usually small diced tomatoes mixed with diced red onion, extra virgin olice oil and basil. Sometimes there will be a little drizzle of balsamic. I couldn't even detect the garlic rubbed on the bread. The tomato was whacking great chunks which had turned to mush under the huge smothering of cheese. The salad garnish was nice at least. My husband enjoyed his Smothered Potato Skins but did comment on the very large portion! Not a bad thing, I know lol. The mains - My steak was cooked to perfection (not lean though, as promised on the menu - I cut off quite a chunk of gristly fat) and the chips were to die for. However, the Diane sauce just tasted of cream - the mushrooms had no flavour and there was absolutely no hint of Brandy at all. It was very disappointing. My husband didn't enjoy his Chicken Parmo as he felt that there was far too much cheese and that's all he could taste. The Sticky Toffee puddings were amazing though - generous and moist with a lovely toffee soaked airy texture. The portion of cream that accompanied mine was laughable, however. It was the size of a dip pot and quickly soaked into the pudding so was undetectable anyway. I had to add ice cream from my own freezer to enjoy it. My hubby had custard with his - wish I'd had the same. Service was good and on time, everything was packed well and portions were very generous (apart from the cream, lol!) Based on everything not having much flavour though, and the weird starter, I don't think I'd order again. It's a real shame as it did put a dampener on what should have been a perfect evening. I really wished we'd gone out instead.

Visited The Cavalier yesterday for a drink in the beer garden, wanted something small to eat to not spoil our tea. Opted for the mixed meat platter starter to share with my partner, was very disappointed when it arrived, personally felt for £8.95 wasn’t worth the price.

We went on Christmas day 2018. We booked in August and chose from the menu well in advance. My mother uses a wheelchair and the staff were very friendly and helpful explaining that there is a ramp at the back and we would get access through the back door. We did this on Christmas day and our table was conveniently placed near to the door. Our table was booked for 2pm and the starters arrived at 2pm. We did order two childrens portions and four adults, but six adult portions arrived - no problem from our point of view. Starters were hot and fresh, same for the main course, probably too much food per portion, the desserts were lovely. Very friendly service, the room was large, but not overcrowded with tables to cram in as may people as they could (as other restaurant do) the staff were very busy but had the time to make sure things were ok with us.

Food was beautiful. Went for the 4 course menu had prawn cocktail for starter and chicken in peppercorn sauce and chips for main then Chocolate Fudge Cake for afters. As normal was beautiful my favourite lunch time place to go. They even have a Winter Warmer menu on at the minute which is pub grub but I love a bit Italian to break up the week. Staff were great and really helpful. We had a late arrival to our table and they still had all the food come out together fabulous service xx

Walked along to try this place out. We were shown to our table and our order was promptly taken. Then waited about 45 mins before the staff informed us our food order had been lost and they needed to take it again. Soup of the day was tomato and basil which was basically tinned tomato soup, don’t even think it was Heinz. The roast dinners came out soon after and weren’t too bad but average nonetheless. Spent most of the afternoon in there swatting away blue bottles. Won’t be heading back.

Visited here a number of times and always found it mediocre, however today was exceptional! Ordered the 3 course special 9 99. Soup and bread was very tasty, Hot beef sandwich included a homemade leek suet dumpling which I thought was a nice little touch, you don’t get that anywhere else! Homemade chips were delicious! Cheesecake was pretty standard but was was included in the price. Waitress couldn’t do enough for us and handled our large party very well! Overall an excellent experience and would definitely visit here again! Shame this place only has 3 stars, it deserves more!

I don’t normally write bad reviews as its often unfair but I feel today’s trip to the Cavalier deserves it. This is not Junipers any longer and you can tell. I’ve heard this is under new management or has had a revamp...if this is the case then they’re in trouble. Firstly we waited 15mins for them to come to serve us then nearly an hour for our starters and when mine came i had to send it back. The first time I’ve ever done this, the pate simply wasn’t edible, it was more like lumpy soup. The Sunday lunch was average at best, the condiments came in Heinz sachets and the vegetables weren’t cooked. We ate it purely as we were so hungry!! Another couple next to us also sent both of theirs back. We were in there nearly 2hrs and not once were we asked if we wanted more drinks and the waiting staff did not know what beers were on the menu and I overheard one waitress giving a fellow diner lamb...it was beef!!! Now that’s a bad sign!! We got the bill but no one came to take pay for it, i eventually went to the bar myself where surprise surprise another diner was complaining. I waited a while to pay...a common theme of the day...and all through this not one person asked how the food was, or if we had enjoyed it. If they had I would have told them instead of putting it on here! We will not be returning unfortunately

We have now found our favourite place for Sunday lunch. Myself husband and son visited for the first time on Sunday 22 oct, all opted for the 2 course menu. To start husband had calamari with side salad son had prawn cocktail and myself pate all beautifully presented and tasted out of this world. After our pkates were collected we waited a further 15 mins for mains which I feel is right as you don't want to be dashed. Hubby had pork me and my son had beef meat melt in your mouth veg cooked just the way I like it and yorkshires huge but so light. All staff very polite nothing too much trouble at all see you all next week I for one can't wait.

Went here with 5 young children & 3 adults. Kids have big area to play which is enclosed so you feel safe to let them run free on the grass, small wooden play area with slide & climbing apparatus. Lovely outdoor area on a nice day. We ordered lunch & portions were a good size. The adults opted for a 3 course special which was under £10 each and excellent value. In fact we had to get the desserts packaged to take away. Although it was quite empty the food service was a little slow and the member of staff had to be prompted, however she was very pleasant & it was not a huge deal. Will definitely visit again in the summer

Always come here on pay day , staff friendly , food is lovely , presented well and very tasty , noticed not many cars in the car park which was unusual, when we got in pub there was signs on every post telling you , you must get table number then head to the bar , thought this was over the top , only need to be informed once not several times , sat at the table and looked at menu , nice meals but not a lot of selection , went to the bar placed the order , not regular friendly staff , 1 lady was pleasant but the other very anti social , waited bit long for the food , it came was tasty but very small portions , definitely big difference from previous visits Had a teenager with us , so off to McDonald's it was as he was starving , must admit think I could have eaten 1 as well , better places to eat in area and much friendlier staff around , be long time before I go back

This is the first time we have eaten here since junipers took over the food, and I'm afraid it is the last. We were there to celebrate a birthday; however, it was one disappointment after another. Firstly; we have 3 vegetarians, who do not expect a huge choice of vegetarian meals, but when asking for the soup of the day, which had a 'V' along side, indicating it is vegetarian, they didn't expect to be told it was 'Pea and Ham'! Ok, I'm not the only one to notice that 'ham' is not a vegetable. Secondly; the main 'only vegetarian option' of nut roast, was not available. It was only 13:00, and I don't think there was an influx of vegetarians wanting nut roast prior to our arrival. I was led to believe there was never nut roast that day. Thirdly; one family member chose calamari which arrived resembling a tin of Heinz spaghetti, slopped on the plate, reheated and unappetising. Fourthly; the starters were the smallest, with little, or no presentation at all. I put more effort in my meals on a weekday after a full day at work...no, I'm not joking. Finally; the service was ridiculously slow and one elderly member fell asleep waiting. The waiting staff were friendly and apologetic; I pitied them for having to repeatedly do so due to Junipers failings. This may be a one off, but I'm not wasting my time or money again here.

This place has been steadily going down hill for some time now and today for me was the final straw and will definitely be my final visit. To put it simply, the place is run on a shoe string with a very basic menu which is not even cooked well.Yes the food is cheap but that's because it's cheap food. The chips are home made which is great but they are made badly and are greasy and limp and not nice at all. There is only one person serving so service is slow and all in all, not somewhere I would choose to visit again. It used to be fantastic but it really is poor now.

Attended here on Sunday as a family of 4 for Sunday lunch. The restaurant itself was clean and comfortable and felt welcoming. The staff were polite and friendly and took our order promptly. The grown-ups ordered starters, and the waitress asked if we'd like them at the same time as the kids' lunches were served. We said yes as we've always done this in the past, it means we've more chance of eating in peace as the kids take longer to eat a main than we do 2 courses!Starters - pate was ok but pretty tasteless. The salad that came with if was fresh and nicely dressed. Unfortunately instead of the accompanying crostini promised by the menu I got 2 small slices of untoasted bread. My husband ordered the prawn and crab mayo starter at a supplement on top of the fixed price menu. He said this was lovely but felt it wasn't great value as he was served 2 prawns and about a teaspoon of crab. He was also given untoasted bread instead of the advertised accompaniment. The dinners were beautiful - plenty of nicely cooked fresh veg, home made yorkies and nice roasties. We were disappointed with the timing though, as despite the offer of timing our meals detailed above, we didn't get our mains until an hour after arrival. By this point the kids had finished theirs and were hounding us to go on the play area, so we had to bolt our meals! Again there was a variation from the menu, which stated glazed root veg and crackling, neither of which we got. We did raise these points once we'd finished (which was the only time we were asked how the food was) and we were given a free dessert to take home as compensation. However, although most of the food was very nice, it certainly wasn't the cheapest meal we've had (over £50 including drinks) and given the number of fairly 'minor' niggles I doubt we'd visit again with the kids. I'd probably order beef next time too as I saw someone else's and it looked beautiful compared to the pork!My husband commented that there is definitely scope for improvement with the beer offering - given the current popularity for craft beers/hand-pulls the selection of lager, Smith's or Boddington's means the Cavalier could be missing out on a large market!

The downside was the food i ordered was not what I thought it was going to be. The starter of salt and pepper chicken wings were deep fried to the point were all I could taste was the batter and this was not specified on the menu or I wouldn't of ordered them and the pasta dish I ordered was not very warm. Although the rest of the group really enjoyed their meals! One ordered the roast dinner which looked lovely, homemade Yorkshire pudding and delicious veg And the other range of starters and mains liked good too. Plus we got a good deal 2 courses for £11 and kids ate for £1.50! Overall a lovely place with a brilliant garden and play area where kids can run freely while parents relax and enjoy! Actually found it hard to choose something as it was a repetative menu. When we had chosen we we're told we couldn't have it. We choose chicken burgers. This came on a plastic tray the chips had no potato in them covered in salt and looked burnt. The chicken was dry with no taste and the Burger bun wasn't fresh. I have eaten here a few times now and each time has been better than the last. The quality of the food for what you pay is in my opinion unbeatable, and the menu keeps getting a bit bigger every time! Last Saturday I had a delicious bubble and squeak starter. Simple but delicious. The fish and chip main was awesome. A huge piece of tasty white fish in gorgeous crunchy batter, the best chips it is possible to make (I wish all pubs could make chips like this, the world would be a better place!) with mushy peas and, at my request, lovely gravy (I've lived in Manchester too long!). It also came with some side salad which in my opinion should be left out. I don't think it goes. And a great sticky toffee pudding. And the price which I can't remember exactly seemed far too cheap for what I'd had. Going again today for Sunday lunch. Can't wait. We loved Junipers Pantry at the Barnes and had high hopes for Juniper s pantry at the Cavalier. The scotch eggs were still available but only one type compared to the numerous varieties previously. We asked for a couple to takeaway and were surprised to be charged the same as if we had sat in the restaurant. The waitress was brilliant but the manager was distracted.Perhaps he was having an off day. Shame. We won t be back.

7th of August was my grandsons christening ,booked this venue we were giving a long list off the menu only to be told a week before the event to choose 4things off the menu ,when the food was placed on the tables there was stale buns which the fillings included thin slice of beef ,thin layer of cheese savoury and coleslaw sandwiches I have never in my life ever been served coleslaw sandwiches on a buffet the sausage rolls had no sausage in them and were soft and damp ,the chicken drumsticks were pink inside and for the pasta it had no sauce on it was dry with a few diced peppers tossed on DISGUSTING

We booked a table for 4 on the spur of the moment. All our meals were very good. The service was great. Good menu choice and price , tasty food, good portions and they have my favourite.. chateaubriand which very few places serve so will be back to try that. The deserts are all home made and I must say this was the best chocolate brownie I have ever had.

First impression - The restaurant has very odd interior. A mixture of old and new which doesn't really work. Net curtains up to separate one room from the other. Very strange.Starters - The mussels were overcooked in a "soupy" sauce. Very little crab in the crab cocktail. Other starters seemed satisfying.Dinner - Beef cooked thoroughly, very tender with lovely homemade Yorkshire puddings. Unfortunately the greens were overcooked, parsnip undercooked and the roasties were deep fried. Lovely meaty gravy, however far too much on the plate. A separate jug would have been better.

We popped in while passing on a Saturday lunchtime. It was quiet when we arrived, about 12.15, but by the time we left the place was filling up.Bit chilly for the beer garden for us but nice outdoor space with bouncy castle and playground if anyone had children.Staff were lovely from the minute we got there. Quite surprising how big it is inside actually. The husband had the mixed grill - massive! Had a great mixture of lamb, pork, beef, sausage with chips, egg and salad. I had the mixed dip sandwich and chips. The chips are lovely homemade chips. Big portion! The gravy on my sandwich was lush.Would definitely return!

Visited for Sunday lunch, pleased we had booked a table as was very busy. Seated in the conservatory and menus brought. Quite a wait to order drinks & had to order food separately but it was busy & we were in no rush. Both of us chose beef & it was lovely, plenty of veg brought in a separate dish. Yorkshire pudding was a bit hard & burnt but rest of it was lovely. No room for pudding but they did look nice. Only slight gripe is parking isn't great when busy but overall nice lunch. Would return

I have been intending to frequent this venue for a while. The welcome was friendly. There was no premium laager on sale yet the coors that was served was pleasant and in the correct glass. The staff were great paying close attention to my husbands food allergy. Really made to feel welcome and the food was splendid and if anything under-priced for the quality.

Came with my friend for lunch to be greeted by a man with glasses which I later found out was the manager, he was very sarcastic and rude and couldnt crack a smile. If the pub wasn't so out the way we would have left immediately and went else where.unfortunately we won't be back there and will make sure our friends and family know about the service. Their was a young boy that looked after us couldn't fault him as he done a better job than the manager, the place got a little busier and the manager just stood doing nothing. As I came to pay the bill at the bar a young women came to remove a pile of dirty plates the manager told her not to as their was a boy that served us to do it. Absoultly disgusted in the way the manager treats customers no customer skills or communication at all, I'm actually disappointed as this is certainly not the kind of treatment you would expect from a manager who should want people coming into his restaurant. In my advice I'd highly recommend not going there unless there's a new manager.

Went here for a lunch with my partner and baby (in a pram) to find there was no ramp so had to carry the pram up the steps to the entrance. We opted to sit in the conservatory but we were the only diners so lacked atmosphere. Food was fresh and portion size adequate but nothing flash so not sure I would hurry to return. I do think a family oriented pub should have better access for families and disabled.

The Cavalier is an ordinary pub doing above average pub/restaurant food very nicely. It won't win any Michelin stars but it will win praise for being an honest, good value eatery in a world where pork dips, onion rings and Carlsberg are about as good as it gets. We liked the manager who understands his job and is good at it and has a sense of humour (always an asset) though his staff are slightly less impressive. We went there for a hearty lunch which touched the spot. I'll certainly be going again, maybe for breakfast, or even afternoon cream tea which I see they also offer. If you're looking to feed well on a modest budget, definitely try the Cavalier. Maybe not if you want to impress a serious date.

We were recently back home in Tunstall and decided to take my Father-in-law out for dinner , it was suggested we tried The Cavalier as it had just re-opened.Upon arrival the place had not changed , great outside gardens and the position was as it was some 10+ years ago when we were last there. We went in and ordered some G &T's as pre dinner drinks , they were ok but no slice of lemon offered . Then off we went to Juniper's and this is when things went really down hill. The menu is what I would say is a pub menu with deep fried stuff. i asked for the wine list and was told the following , As the bar and restaurant are separate they don't have a wine list just house Red or House White , I asked what make and she went to fetch the bottles to show me. I selected the White Sauvignon Blanc and what appeared was a British Wine made from imported concentrated grape juice , the last time i had such a vintage was from Boots homemade wine kit in the 70's The food came and was mainly left as the quality of the meat was very low . Needless to say we won't be going back and it really disappoints us that such a lovely location with gardens , conservatory and dinning room can only offer food the standard of a very bad local fish and chip shop

Visited this place after recommended by someone who clearly has no taste palate lol. 1st the bar staff who couldn't be bothered to serve us after 5mins of standing at the bar, place was empty too but she was more concerned about re applying her lipstick!Only after I said Excuse me did we get her attention & then we wish we hadn't. The attitude was unacceptable and when we enquired about the pie of the day she replied "I don't know i'l get the waitress". Miserable & very unfriendly indeed. As I've also read other reviews regarding the so called home baked pie I wanted to add mine so hopefully the management will take note & hire someone who can actually cook!I ordered the home baked lamb pie purely due to there being absolutely nothing else on the menu that sounded nice (choice of 8 meals in full)When the "pie" came it was a dish with a pastry lid, once removed there were 2 small slices of meat + loads of mushrooms, peas, onions & dried veg. It was so hot nothing could be touched or eaten, I got mash with mine so dunked a bit into gravy and felt sick immediately! It was like those cheap supermarket mince meals, disgusting! And was £8 + !!!Left everything & the pub so will most definitely not be returning ever again. Tip; go to Oaktree farm 5 mins up the rd.

Called in one Saturday afternoon on the recommendation of a good friend who praises Junipers Pantry food to high heaven.Ordered the Pie of the day @ £8 expecting a good quality pie with all the trimmings. On arrival, disappointment that it was a dish of sliced meat (probably from the leftovers of yesterdays special) in gravy with a puff pastry top......THAT IS NOT A PIE. The veg was dreadful. Overcooked and inedible. The wife ordered Lobster tail on a bed of linguine @ £16. It was so overcooked she could not pierce it with a fork. The linguine looked like heinz spagetti. After complaining to the manager, we were offered replacements but unfortunately my desire to eat there had gone. We finished our drink and left. The manager was fine, he apologised for the poor state of the cooking. The staff were nice but couldn't manage to get a double gin and tonic right, we got a single!Never again!

We were looking forward to our Sunday meal but we were left feeling that they could have done so much better. We got a small amount for veg between us so we asked for more. The manager asked the waitress why we had two dishes!! The roast potatoes lacked the roasting proceedure and we just dry chunks of potatoes. The chicken was so dry that my daughter struggled to cut it up.The gravy was far too salty. I ordered a cherry and chocolate cheesecake that was rubbish...one dried up cherry on the top. My daughter ordered the fudge cake but it came without any ice cream and was dry. The place was noisy and not very inviting.

Came here for Sunday lunch and I've gotta say it wasn't as good as last time. A couple of us ordered the pate which we expected toast not bread. The Yorkshire Pudding was dry, possibly sitting around for some time. We got the feeling due to a christening being there the chef may have been concentrating more on their food. I'll try it again when there are no functions on but if I experience this again, it will be my last.

I visited with a group on Saturday 27th June and although a table was booked, there wasn't a table set for us (however this gave us time to get drinks). We chose to sit in the conservatory which was lovely with beautiful views of the gardens (if you have children it will be great).Although the food was absolutely beautiful, the service of the staff could be looked at. We were a group of eight adults, one child and one toddler who met for a birthday gathering for Sunday lunch. The outdoor area here is great for kids on a summers day, it certainly kept the children occupied whilst we waited on our lunches. I'm not really a fan of traditional Sunday lunch (I don't like gravy or mashed food) so I know I'm not the best placed person to review a traditional Sunday dinner.I asked the waitress for the roast beef option less the mashed potato and gravy, not really much of an ask if the food us all plated up fresh anyway. Anyway, after a very order specific (to laughter of my companions at my 'fussiness' ) in which it was clear that there was to be no mash or gravy on my plate the dish was brought out with gravy. I will point out that it was quickly changed and everyone's dishes were served steaming hot. My partner and I both found the beef quite dry and we both only has one slither of a piece of parsnip on our plate which made me wonder whether there may be a national parsnip shortage. Roast potatoes were however delicious and the portion was fair.To start I had cheese on toast and my partner had the scotch egg with a runny middle. Both were ok but there was no wow factor. Like I said at the start, I'm not really a fan of traditional Sunday lunch and only really have gripes with the measly parsnip portion and the dish initially coming out incorrect. I'd certainly have drinks and try eating there again but perhaps not when it's a Sunday lunch menu only.

Unfortunately the bar service here has deteriorated massively. It must be costing the company a fortune. Had my friends not already ordered I would have left. Behind the bar were a number of staff but only 2 were serving customers at the bar. The remaining staff were all working at the bottom of the bar dealing with app orders. It's a very long bar and with only 2 staff working it they did not know who was next. People would walk up to the bar long after you'd stood there , and be served. I would have used the app myself but couldn't get a signal in the bar. Unfortunately the 2 staff serving were also extremely slow, despite there not being much of a queue. We waited ages to get served when there wasn't many people waiting, so on a busy night I wouldn't even bother. If you don't have the app or it's not working properly I'd give this bar a miss. It looked like a lot of other people felt the same as this once busy bar was noticeably quiet for a weekend night. Whoever is in charge of the bar needs to sort out proper training for the staff. I've never experienced service as bad as this in any other wetherspoons I've been in. If at all possible, use the app or you'll lose the will, watching other customers stroll to the bar while you wait, wait then wait some more
