I visited with a lady friend. Been before and always found it welcoming. I we ordered the vegetable soup and sandwiches which were excellent, as were the drinks. Just one complaint and this cafe is not the only one guilty of this practice. Why do they insist on putting unadvertised salad on the plate. Not everyone likes salad. Much better to advertise it as an option for an extra payment. Other than that, it’s a lovely intimate cafe. Will go again.

This is the second time I've visited, and I wasn't disappointed. I chose a bacon, sausage and egg white bread sandwich. Yes, there was a short wait as it was cooked fresh to order, the slices of back bacon were delicious, as were the two sausages and the fried egg had a runny yolk. What more can a girl ask for?! When I was given my pot of tea, hot water and milk, I was told that if I wanted more, all I had to do was ask. They also served soup, sandwiches, jacket potatoes etc The cafe is through the gift shop, you can sit outside, and the staff were really friendly. I thoroughly recommend a visit.

The gent who (I think) was an owner (?) was very kind to my family and made us feel so welcome - wet coats and all. He was of a friendly disposition and he was extremely child friendly. My husband and I left thinking, that place will do well because it has such a nice fellow in charge. Customers love a bit of kindness and to feel genuinely valued rather than schmoozed. The previous owners left very little from the gift shop leaving them with just the cafe part so they have been concentrating on that at what seems to very busy period, the staff working well together. I'm assured by the new owner that the gift shop will be up and running soon with good value gifts. I'm very intrigue by this place as its not easy starting a business from scratch and I for one will be returning with great intrigue to see how this place progresses. We called in and sat outside after a long walk over Mam Tor. Was served pretty prompty (inside after quickly realising that this was not table service like many of the other cafe's in Castleton). Paid nearly £8 for two drinks and one scone (ouch) and was told to take a seat outside and they would bring it out. The cafe was mostly deserted and only a few tables outside taken so hardly busy for a Sunday afternoon. Ten minutes ticked by and a young lad appeared with another order (which was wrong) to another table (which was sorted out after a few minutes). Our drinks arrived next and was told that the scone would be a minute or two as it was served warm (having already waited best part of fifteen minutes since arriving and placing an order, I wasn't impressed and went off to find some sugar inside - something that the 'waiter' had completely missed). After just about finishing our drinks, scone eventually arrived several minutes later, thrown on the table by who I assume is the manager and a grumpy 'cutlery is inside'. Laughable! Would I return... No way, Rose Cottage around the corner is our usual go-to place and is excellent and doggy-friendly outside.Sign states 'Under new Management'... be suprised if it lasts the summer.

Went with a friend who lives nearby but who had not yet tried this one. We should have guessed it wasn't great when people seated near us left half their cream tea uneaten. I had what purported to be banana milkshake, but it tasted like none I'd ever tried before, deriving neither from banana or milk. I only managed a couple of sips and the proprietress was still explaining when we left that it was supposed to be like that (with a thick layer of sugar powder at the bottom of the plastic glass). It was still repeating on me 2 hours later. Odd that they have ice cream at the front of the cafe but cannot make milkshake. Also the cheapest vinegar based ketchup completely ruined what might otherwise have been a good bacon sandwich.

After a long walk including Mam Tor we found the Causeway Shop on our route through the town and seeing a free table outside we grabbed it and one of us went in and ordered the Derbyshire Cream Tea. After a long wait the tea arrived and we were given the impression that the scones etc were on their way. But they didn't come - and one of us had to go inside to collect the food. To their credit they did give us a new pot of tea free given that the first had stewed whilst waiting. The problem was that this shop was being run by two youngsters who simply couldn't cope. The design of the shop doesn't help with the counter located right at the back round a corner. This could be a fantastic place but it is clearly not getting the management attention that it needs. We should have noticed the weed infested plant boxes outside earlier and not have bothered to go in!

Following an A-board in Castleton that said "biggest gift shop in town" (or words to that effect), I was very disappointed with my visit today. The 'gifts' experience that used to greet you as you entered has shrunk to tiny proportions? Where what used to be display units etc., there are now tables scattered around randomly for anybody eating from the cafe that is at the far end of the shop. I ordered at the cafe counter a coffee and a toasted tea cake, and was told to take a seat and it would be brought out. A young girl brought me a coffee only, and I must have waited about 20 mins and still no tea cake. By this time my coffee had gone cold, the girl had delivered at last 5 other orders to tables, and so I went to the counter to ask if she had forgotten my tea cake. She had! There was no apology, and I asked if I could have another coffee as my original was cold. I sat back down and she brought them over seperately (again). The coffee was average to say it had cost £2.35, and the tea cake was overdone and had no substance to it. A friendly greeting and a little courtesy wouldn't have gone a miss! I will not be returning which is a shame, as I always had a warm welcome from the lady who was on the counter as you entered the shop, and the guys who used to run the cafe.

Called in today as we had visited before and the coffee and scones were good. Firstly, had to disturb the waitress who was sat at a table finishing her cream scone and licking her fingers. Ordered two coffees and two cheese scones (hope she washed her hands!!) The order came and, as experienced previously, was quite good. The bill came to £10.60 which we paid. I fancied another coffee so asked my wife for some money, she gave me a £20 note and I returned to the counter to order. Looking at the price list above the counter, the coffees were £2.35 each but no price for cheese scones. I asked the price and was told £2.50 each. We had been charged £10.60 so I questioned this, the waitress immediately banged some numbers into a calculator and told me that it was correct ( 2x £2.50 + 2x £2.35 =£9.70) ? I did not argue as I thought not worth it for 90p and continued to order another coffee. I paid and went to sit down giving my wife the change which I foolishly had not checked. The change was for £10, not £20. I questioned the waitress who, to be fair, was a bit distressed as she had scolded her hand on some hot soup. We went back to the till but she thought that I had given her £10 not £20. My wife was quite sure that it was £20 so I asked the waitress to let me know at the end of the day if the taken money was £10 over, she took my number and promised to call. We have not heard from her so will have to put this down to experience and not visit the cafe again!

I have been to this cafe on two occasions, with a gap of about one and a half years and on both occasions I was overcharged! This could of course been a coincidence but I did see another review where that person was also overcharged, so I would recommend always checking the amount they charge you. The cakes and drinks we had were very nice, although the coffee could have been hotter. One worrying observation within the cafe/shop is a mains socket on the wall that has come away from the wall, meaning children could get their hands behind the socket and get electrocuted, this needs sorting ASAP!

New table arrangement allows you to sit away from kitchen area in shop, which has better ventilation, so clothes less permeated with cooking odours. There is seating outside for dryer or warmer weather. Ordered two jacket potatoes with tuna mayonnaise. The potato was only vaguely warm, had a dry texture and tasted stale. The tuna mayonnaise had very little (unflavoured) mayonnaise and tasted of nothing in general. I left most of mine but my elderly friend always clears the plate, no matter what! We did complain when the waitress finally came round to us to remove our plates. (There were 3 other customers in the cafe at the time). We received an apology. Visited the cafe for the third time today but was disappointed. I gathered that the lady who served me was new to the job (certainly front of house) and was flustered.I waited for a considerable amount of time for two hot drinks. I ordered soup which was described as something which it evidently wasn't, and when I queried this, was made to feel like I was being unreasonable. I had paid good money for the soup, which wasn't cheap, and it was lumpy and quite unappealing in all honest. There was a debate between the lady serving and the owner/manager, which was embarrassing in front of a queue of diners; I wasn't asked what I wanted but I think in the circumstances I ought to have been offered an alternative. I wasn't but nevertheless I said that I would have a cold drink, which was brought over by a helpful chap. A few minutes later, mid-conversation with my co-diner, and another member of staff interrupted without a word of excuse and starting removing crockery from the table, when we hadn't finished our hot drinks: the epitome of bad manners. I shan't be returning; service and attitude was sub-standard.

If you're looking for a pretty café which provides a decent coffee and a sandwich, this place is absolutely fine. The menu isn't extensive, but is nevertheless similar to most cafés of this ilk.We had a few issues on a very busy August Saturday lunchtime, which are probably entirely absent at all other times:We ordered ciabatta bread, but got white. We had to queue for 10 minutes to be served. No dressing was offered with the salad. The (teenage) staff were evidently overrun, having run out of glasses and jacket potatoes. One man was overcharged by accident. Breakfast isn't served during the afternoon, but it remains on the menu with no warning that this is the case. However, as I say, the cafe is likely fine outside of very busy periods. The food was adequate and the seating is situated in a pretty shop.

Not happy to accept this and with the voucher expiring March 31st I called to attempt a similar booking, being more forceful and offerering to stop by one Saturday to see if they really don't have free tables I was finally offered a booking. The food was good and so was the service, (I also noted a couple of other free tables) but lying to me about capacity when I tried to book in an obvious attempt not to honour the vouchers and prioritise (more profitable) visitors detracted from what was an otherwise excellent visit.

Organising this visit (myself and my Grandma) with a Groupon voucher was quite stressful, and if it hadn't been for this I would have given this place 5 stars. The manager (Lee) cancelled our appointment once, and attempted to relocate us to The Three Roofs on our second visit due to 'renovation work' that didn't exist. It was only through a little arguing that we got to keep our booking, which was unnecessary. The place itself, and our visit, however, was lovely. The decoration is wonderful, its clean, attractive and quaint. The staff were really friendly to us, and accommodating of my nan's fairly noisy puppy. The food was of really good quality- the sandwiches were nice (cheese and onion, egg, tuna) and the fruit scones were fresh and seriously tasty. We were offered extra tea and coffee. The whole experience was nice and of high quality. We had a really great time, and would definitely come back again. Thank you.

Homely tea rooms with very nice gift shop. Afternoon tea was served with a very pleasant young friendly waitress. We were asked on arrival if we preferred tea or coffee. I took the choice of coffee and my husband had tea. Coffee was served in a small cup. Where the tea was served in a two cup size tea pot. The two teir cake stand was brought, On the bottom plate was a very nice selection of sandwiches . The top plate was four small scones with one pot of cream and one pot of jam both full to capacity. Feel that the coffee should have been a larger size compared with the tea. But overall very nice.

Our family group of 7 adults and dog visited yesterday after a walk for groupon lunch/tea - which we had pre-booked but only earlier in the day. The tea/coffee with sandwiches and scones was delicious, particularly the warm, fresh scones and generous jam and cream - we had extra scones to clean up! (£1 each) Dogs are welcome, though would need to be well behaved as there is a lot on display in shop and cafe. We had a quick browse in the shop where there was lots of interest but will definitely return to browse and eat again - because of pretty room, cake plates, bird wallpaper, dog friendly and great service. Thanks!

I love this gift shop and always manage to find something to purchase ! Been for the groupon afternoon tea twice here - both times completely different -first time lovely fresh finger sandwiches with a side salad, cakes and cream scones. The second time nice sliced bread sandwiches and more of them, but no side salad,no cakes this time, but still with cream scones. It would be nice to be given a choice as the side salad was a lovely touch and the cream scones without extra cakes was quite enough for me.Also seen on other reviews how you were made to feel you had to pay straight away for extra drinks, when waiting until the meal was finished would have been more acceptable - we felt like this too but made a point of paying at the end. This was a little annoying ! Overall though a lovely meal in a lovely place.

Me and my boyfriend a young couple were recently bought a groupon for this cafe for Christmas 'cream tea for two'. When we got there we were told we couldn't use the groupon as we had to book in advance (which was fair enough, we didn't relaise) however he said the groupon couldn't be used on Sunday's even and groupon had got it wrong on their website (no apology) he also stated that they had no cream tea available. Which we thought was fair even though his attitude stunk. We sat down and had soup which was lovely but was served by another very rude staff member. Whilst sat, a customer ordered three cream teas!!!!! Would definatley never go back due to rude horrible staff. However food was lovely and could be a very nice place if the rota was different. Very disappointed.

We came across this shop and cafe by chance. Walk up the Main Street and just after the school you will see the causeway shop. A great shop at front with an inviting and friendly coffee shop to the rear. We had tuna melts and followed it with warm fresh scones with jam and cream. Everything was reasonably priced, fresh and served by friendly people. Would recommend you visit when in Castleton.

Visited the Causeway shop yesterday. Spotted a Bluetooth speaker I really liked but wasn't sure would pair with my iPad. The assistant was so very friendly and helpful and we agreed that I would visit again today with my iPad. She was also really helpful in showing me how Spotify worked. Nothing was too much trouble.Today we went back and saw a different member of staff (possibly Lee?) along with his dog Pippen. Hard to say which was the most delightful! Very easy to chat with and not in the slightest bit pushy in terms of selling us anything. Yes we did buy the Bluetooth speaker and were happy to buy it from The Causeway because of the enjoyable experience. We only had time for a coffee in the cafe but really wished we had timed it better as all the food we saw delivered to nearby tables looked so appetising and home made. We will definately visit again and make sure we have something to eat in the cafe. Thanks to all the staff for making walking into your lovely shop and cafe such a pleasure.

I have visited this café/gift shop several times before with my husband. The last time was November 2013 when he was using a wheelchair. There is a slope into the shop area not too slippery either. Every effort was made at the time to accommodate him and a table was made available near the entrance by the proprietor. So I have returned to Castleton and visited again The Causeway again, the proprietor remembered me and was very pleasant and we chatted. The café serves snacks, sandwiches, soup and cakes. A nice atmosphere and surroundings, comfy booth style seating as well as ordinary chairs and tables. The food is lovely with soups freshly made at their sister café The Three Roofs on Cross Street further into town. Dogs allowed. I was offered water for my dog if I wanted it. Plenty of gift ideas in the shop, artworks, jewellery and much more. If you have a very large or bouncy dog or unruly child be aware that the passage through the gift shop to the café may be a bit tight, you would struggle to get through with a wheelchair, but I imagine help would be offered.

We had a delicious portion of pumpkin soup with fresh salad and a sandwhich and tea. It was scrumptious and filling. We sat outside as we had our dog with us, but later discovered they would've allowed him indoors which is worth knowing for winter visits. The outdoor seating area is pleasant, but sadly it was a busy road so it may be better to sit further back from the fumes of the cars and lorries that is almost constant

The outside patio and front shop hide a hidden gem of a delightful cafe/restaurant at the rear, all the staff were very friendly, welcoming, polite and happy to serve. The cream tea was the best cream tea in memory (and I've had lots of cream teas in the past few years), the tomato soup was homemade and so obviously fresh and served with crusty bread and butter. We will definitely be going back again! The shop was also a pleasant distraction.

We have just returned from a day out to Castleton and while we were there we stopped for afternoon tea at The Causeway Shop. We were using a Living Social Voucher and although we hadn't booked, (we didn't realise we needed to), the staff said they would fit us in if we went back in an hour. The wait was worth it. The sandwiches were delicious and generous in size. The scones were the best scones we had tasted and came with plenty of jam and cream. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. We will definately be returning.

What a lovely place to find on a wet summers day in Castleton. After browsing through this shop we found a lovely cafe at the rear. Coffee and cakes went down a treat. Very friendly service from all...even Moira, a lovely lady doing the washing up came over to say hello. We shared a joke about my mother's bush....Left with a smile and a full tummy. Tip: also benefitted from an ATM inside which is free to use (These are a bit rare in the village). Definitely would go back and try an afternoon snack or cream tea). Charming all round.

The shop also has some very nice items for sale; definitely worth a visit for gifts or food.

We’d just had a doctor’s appointment and were looking for some late lunch at around 3pm on a weekday (Thursday). The staff were not actively unpleasant, but they surely were not friendly either- the level of service and welcome is much less than the other coffee shops in Glossop. We had the potato hash, which was very, very fatty - the hash is made of mince and usually ok, but this was very meat-heavy with very few veg, and it tasted overwhelmingly of liquid fat in the gravy. Having enjoyed it before, several times, this was diabolical - we’ll not be back. Especially as the food hygiene score has now fallen (currently a ‘4’). The service now became quite surly. By 4pm the staff lined up, clearly ready to go home. When asked, very nicely ‘are we keeping you from going home?’, they actually just said ‘yes’. No smile, no mitigation, no explanation, just ‘yes’. We drank our tea, paid, and left. There once was no competition in Glossop. Now there’s a lot, and that competition is friendlier, more welcoming, and- to be honest - seems cleaner also. And their food is now better also. We shan’t be back. This cafe does not deserve our business. I work really hard for that money and it can be better spent elsewhere.

Just popped in for a bite of lunch. The two bar staff were very welcoming. Nice selection of beers/ales on tap, and a good selection of alcohol-free bottled beers. Good selection of dishes on the menu. My wife and I each ordered one of the sausage and mash dishes. Got a choice of types of sausages, types of mashed spuds, and type of gravy. Food was delivered quite quickly and was absolutely delicious. Was a great pub to find and I would not hesitate to visit again next time we are back in the area.

Very slow service, and the place itself is rather mismashed. The layout doesn’t feel like a cafe it’s just so odd and the food was actually awful. Very disappointing plus the prices are a joke considering the miserable faces of the staff and poor quality service. Wouldn’t ever go back, really not for us.
