Awful Would go zero stars if I could

We came on Halloween! 🎃 it was very pleasant and nice to get dinner and drinks. The food was great and management extremely knowledgeable.

Nice pub but it is expensive, 7.00 for a pint of lager - madri. I was visiting the planet ice and decided to have a beer. That's 2.00 more a pint than in Wales. Staff were friendly and food was good.

Just had drinks. Hook Norton pub with their range of eventful beers. Quiet Wednesday night, but still very pleasant. Lloyd if interesting rooms and nokks and crannies.

A very good genuine pub in Oxford selling the outstand Hook Norton beers. More town than gown. Revisit 2024. Looked forward to the Hook Norton, it was freezing cold and I couldn't taste anything! So disappointing.

Delicious food and drinks and even more so the homemade fish pie! Excellent attention.

Came here for a post graduation meal. Service was fantastic and food was amazing! Really enjoyed the smoky bacon Mac and cheese and the garlic fries.

Great food, great atmosphere, great music. Upstairs and downstairs were lovely spaces and staff were fast and friendly.

I came here for my graduation meal, very accommodating, amazing food, and even better staff. Highly recommend. They support local brewery’s serving Hook Norton beer and have a wide variety of larger, cider, wines and spirits

Sat downstairs in the boudoir! Goodness incredible- great portions and served quickly and lovely and hot. Kudos to the chef. Great selection of drinks, toilets clean - couldn’t ask for any more. Very accommodating for baby

It is a very cozy and old pub, it has two levels, I really liked the food. We will definitely return.

A very friendly welcome when we first arrived. The food was gorgeous and very reasonably priced. When it came to dessert, they couldn't do enough to make a dessert I could eat. Can't wait to go back

Best chips & fish I've ever had. And many types of beer.

Awful staff. Entered and went to table to pick food. Went to the bar to order and the only member of staff was on a mobile talking hands free and on her computer planning her shifts !!! After 10 minutes I asked if I can order and was scowled at and asked ‘what do you want’, no welcome hello or pleasantries so we decided to go elsewhere. She then turned around and she was back on the phone and computer picking her preferred shifts as we left. A real shame but I cannot bear rudeness and bad customer service.

Visited as a family group - lovely friendly staff - very helpful - plugged my dead phone in to charge behind the bar while we ate good food at reasonable price - we were too full for pudding so left and went a walk around town then went back for puddings. We were greeted like old friends and thoroughly enjoyed our meals and time there. Will definitely be back if ever in Oxford again.

Nice and welcoming place but they decided to close the kitchen at 8pm and we had to struggle for a dessert. Order everything at once and you may have a better experience.

I took a tour from a wonderful tour guide named Ella. If not for her enthusiasm energy and fantastic vibes I don't think I would have enjoyed the tour. I will happily revisit on a warmer day, only if Ella tours me.

Absolutely dire: no idea how to serve a pint. Humorless and absentee staff. Filthy toilets. Oh yeah, and not everyone likes being called “babes”, repeatedly. Hook Norton: you are a highly respected local brewery, get shot of this dross.

Very friendly staff, great food

Popped in for lunch had a chicken wrap with tater tots, sausage and mash. Good portion sizes for a light lunch. Plenty of draft beers on. Nice selection of ciders and soft drinks. Plenty of seating inside, downstairs and outside.

We didn't like the food, but the beers were good (we even went to the Hook Norton brewery the next day thanks to their recommendation) and the location is superb.

Made to feel so welcome here. Staff were friendly and polite - thank you. Will definitely come here again. Maybe we will eat here next time.

Got fish finger sandwich which was with fresh bloomer and thick fish fillets . What came out was supermarket cheap thin sliced bread with uncooked stodge batter with some grey looking fish in which was very little. Not nice.

I visited this pub while staying with my daughter ,they have a fine selection of hook Norton ales the staff are friendly and helpful atmosphere friendly enjoyed a good couple of pints before we had to leave will visit again when I'm here again .

My go to place to practice Spanish each Wednesday. Good beer.

Atmosphere and service were absolutely fantastic, I can’t fault them. Quite and chilled area nice and relaxed . What bugged me though was the food. They had no buns for burgers so I got a toastie which wasn’t bad but the chicken in the burger was way too salty to enjoy even the wings, everything was just overpowering with salt, only thing that made it bearable were the fries which were actually good.

Very nice all round . Great food great service 👍 Parking is a problem. But worth a walk. Not cheep but value for money....

We visited Oxford at Easter, we went in for lunch. The staff is very friendly, there is not much variety, and the dishes are small in quantity, but well cooked and the atmosphere was calm, well decorated.

Now dog friendly..real ales. Outside sitting area.

The food is mediocre, staff friendly! I definitely not recommend it, search another restaurant if you want to eat decent! Here is very expensive and the food doesn’t have any taste…

Really surprised I dont come here more often, I love the mellow vibe, always enjoy Hook Norton beers, simple food choice puts a smile on my face. Lets face it, that is the best place for a smile.

So sorry. Staff seemed lovely. Not many people there. I guess because it stank of bleach and toilet block (a bit like a men's urinal). We couldn't even finish our drink 🙈

Great range of draft, class pub

We visited on Tuesday prior to a Theatre trip, lovely place but they managed to get the order completely wrong and the fish was greasy oh and the Tartar Sauce was very runny. You could hear the guy speaking with Chef in the kitchen, but quite what we dont know but it seemed loud! In fairness we only mentioned the fact the order was wrong, the chap serving seemed too over friendly with excuses we felt and just blamed the Chef for being new! We had to repeat a few times it was fine and just leave it, we came to eat, not to complain. Not the best one.

Lovely friendly service from the bartender. Delicious burgers and a nice pint each too (even if not at Yorkshire prices!! 😂)

Traveled from Essex to Oxford to visit the Victorian Christmas market. Wondered past this pub and popped in for drink and decided to order some food. It was a lovely welcoming atmosphere. Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was excellent.

A big group of us came in yesterday evening to shield from the rain, what an incredible find! The staff are really friendly and welcoming, The chicken wings are some of the best I’ve had. They have hooky ale which is a rare find in Oxford. Downstairs is super cosy will be back for sure!

Friendly staff. This pub is under new management as well. Lets see how it goes. Historically Paradise Street area has been the "gay friendly" area in Oxford.

Great atmosphere, staff were lovely and food was delicious!

We popped in for lunch, we briefly looked at and menu and ordered some drinks. On closer inspection almost every item was chicken. Chicken wings in several formats, all the burgers were chicken. Or there was cod &chips. An odd limited menu.

We were visiting there from Devon ...but a member of staff decided to start to throw empty bottles around in the kitchen which we heard whilst eating. The crashing of the bottles was unbearable...a guy went and complained but the staff were so rude to him.

We loved this pub. Traditional friendly and good food. Really enjoyed the pub quiz 😀

Nice old pub close to the shopping center but worlds away in terms of charm. Real ales and beer on tap, nice drink selection, seating indoor and out. Very nice staff. A fine place for a pint.

I'm sorry, but your Old Rosie cider is not just old, it's dead. Not sparkling, the alcohol has long since evaporated. My friend and I just threw 11 pounds in the trash. It was not a matter of strength (I guess that cider is "a little" weaker than tequila))) There was not a single bubble of gas in the drink. Of course, when I returned the drink to the nice girl at the counter, I asked for another drink instead, not a draft one. And it was as it should be. But I asked if I had to pay something and she said yes. So, I paid for another drink as well. If I was simply offered a replacement, do you think I would write a negative review?

Great to have a Hooky pub in the centre of Oxford. Friendly staff and mixed clientele make for an enjoyable relaxing spot with good beer. Thoroughly recommend. Quiet but still great beer on new visit during the lunchtime period. Also value for money.

Haven't been in The Castle Tavern for at least a couple of years. Last time I was there, I didn't have the best pint of Old Hooky I'd ever tasted. So, I was a little hesitant in purchasing it again. The young bar person told me it was fine...and so it was, I'm happy to report! The atmosphere was pleasant, so a good experience all round.

One of my favourite pubs in Oxford, and the only Hook Norton Brewery pub in Oxford. Always super friendly helpful staff. Good old fashioned atmosphere. Only just gets 5 stars though as it's always cold in there in the winter.

Yes! Finally a Hook Norton pub in Oxford. While there are some decentish pubs in the city, too few sell Oxfordshire beer. The Castle is lovely, very friendly barman and excellent full range of Hook Norton beers.

Quite a shady bar, wasn’t for me particularly especially after a night of hopping some good pubs.

Great little pub in Oxford. Good drinks on tap. Wait staff seemed overwhelmed, as I think there were literally two people working that night. We are from the states and the authentic pub experience was nice, but there was a very loud group of people in there and it kind of ruined the experience a little bit. Food was very average, and mostly just pizza. Not a lot of selection here. But a nice atmosphere!

Life drawing sessions here is great place to have a go or build on your portfolio.

Nice easy atmosphere and great Hook Norton beer. I visited on a Saturday night when the fairly loud drum and bass music didn't seem necessary.

on a friday night myself and my group of friend were served by syrup and deacon. amazing bar tenders with amazing service and had amazing banter! we personally as a friendship group find it hard to find a pub with friendly team member that do more then just serve drinks! i’m sure these two can’t be paid enough!! will definitely be returning to this pub if they’ll have us back 😂

Lovely little pub, next to the Westgate so always handy. Good beer (mostly from the locally old hocky brewing company) and pizza if your need it. Some fun games to kill the time and lots of space. Also kid and dog friendly so all good.

Lovely little pub in the heart of the city. Friendly staff and a good selection of what I think are local brews. The kind of pub I could spend an evening with friends chatting and drinking. Also have a selection of boardgames available.

Life drawing at the castle is really fun, often fully booked so book in advance. Otherwise, good atmosphere and cheap food. Would be 5* if the music wasn't always the same 5 songs!
