Port Mahon in Oxford

The Port is one of the best there ever was. Great live music and an awesome vibe! Catch an event or just go with some mates, it's an Oxford classic.

The man at the bar seemed to think that it was OK to have a conversation instead of taking our order. Also there were a total of five drinks on tap, none of which were ales (just lager or cider). The epitome of oxford, supposedly high class and intelligent, but really socially stunted, incapable and inadequate. I bet I get a message from management from management saying "please contact us directly", ignoring Google's policy.

Friendly music pub with nice ales and a good choice of other options. Gigs in the upstairs room most nights include music, comedy, talks, and more. Downstairs back bar has open mic, folk, and similar. Courtyard back garden provides the perfect chill space between bands. Essential stop off for anyone exploring Oxford's Cowley Road music scene.

This pub no longer does food. Only takes card. Nice small music venue. A bit chilly

Saw some live music here. Three bands put on by Devine Schism promotion. The bands we saw were great, but the venue is small (perhaps 50 people max) and it was incredibly hot and stuffy as there was absolutely no ventilation. Sadly this marred the experience (needs sorting).

Cheap and cheerful, unpretentious pub which caters mainly to the local student population with live music and barbecues.

Good pub with live music upstairs. Probably not one for a quiet chat as it can be a bit more lively than some, but a decent place for a pint. Not the widest selection of drinks, but what is on offer is pretty good.

This used to be one of my favorite pubs in Oxford with great beer, but the last two visits suggest a decline. Most recently the pub had no draft beer, and of the two beers we had from the gas taps, one was flat and the other cloudy (it should have been clear). Music was also playing loudly meaning we had to talk loudly, and we decamped elsewhere without finishing our drinks. I do hope this was a one off, and it reverts to type soon.

A typical Oxford spit and sawdust pub with no parking and Music on different days. Lots of steps inside and outside so not recommended for those with limited mobility.

Central location with lots of live music events. Beer garden and two large bars. Would prefer to pay cash next time.

Welcoming place with a fireplace and serviable staff. However, this place needs some renovation works. We came for Sunday roast, and the plate was looking good, but the beef was not cooked properly, and we didn't appreciate the gravy source it was all over on our plate already Regards

Pretty good pub, only the one handpump but one is better than none especially as the TT Landlord was in good nick.

OK stopping off point from the centre of the city towards the Plain/St Clements. Warmer and brighter than I remember (as a student, some 45 years ago). Warmth of welcome diminished slightly by lack of Campari, or Aperol, for a spritz. Some things don't change, after all.

If you went to this pub before lockdown for year like me don't even waste your time now. Was my favourite place to go for a roast definitely one of the best in oxford. It's was a great size I would have to get the kids sometimes. Everything was done how a real English roast should be and definitely not tesco veg! If they can't find a chef as good as the old one and the Produce then stop selling roast! Because you wasted my time and money and the owners are definitely wasting there's! If I didn't do a takeaway I would of got my money back.

Arrived about an hour ago, was told they had no Sunday roasts left. Okay, no worries - we'll have a pint while we consider our next step then. Now we're sitting here and the cook has just finished eating, headed back to the kitchen, and now they're serving roasts again. What the actual

A wonderful pub! Friendly staff who you can giggle with. Good choice of beer and even cocktails on tap. Really exciting that they are about to do Sunday roasts, we had a sample today and it was magnificent, well worth checking them out!

Staff lovely, great space and well priced pints for the area. The bouncer, however, is an aggressive and unpleasant narcissist who behaves as if he's the gatekeeper of the holy grail. A nasty jobsworth. Try and go when he's not there and you'll have a great time.

Port Mahon was always a great pub, with live music and lots of space to hang out and dance but now its Corona time so its not really the same and before it was 5 stars, now its 4 because of few things, they dont serve food and would have liked that, they cant wait for you to finish the drink and go away, feels unfriendly. Overall its a nice pub but not so much now.

We were made very welcome and the beer was in good condition.

Roast was absolutely tiny. One slice of meat. Undercooked veg. Pretty tasteless all round really. Covid guidelines not great. Good drinks and good music but definitely won’t return for a roast

The energy at this pub is amazing. They have recently renovated their beer garden which adds to the character of this unique and amazing place. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Definitely my go to place for a pint in the Oxford area.

Enter the door and enjoy it all. Fabulous. Freindly. Genuine.. Great tunes. Yeah man! I was made to feel very welcome. My third stop today looking for something special. I've found it. Scampi and chips in a basket done to perfection. Certainly going back and soon.

They did takeaway drinks on a sunny day (during the end of COVID). Heroes / Heroines IMHO.

They have ample berths for large boats and the dockside view is reminiscent of paradise. On Sundays, they have trained eagles that pluck the eyes out of unaware visitors - so watch out! I wouldn't recommend the fourth floor, it's dark and smells a bit of wee.

Not been to the Port Mahon for a while, but dropped in the other day. They've obviously had a new landlord or something because they're had a big refurbishment, so it's not as shabby as it used to be, but that's where the compliments have to end. They no longer do food, except roasts on Sundays. Their food used to be really good. There are enough pubs in Oxford that do good food that they're shooting themselves in the foot by closing the kitchen. They've got a much worse beer selection compared to before. It's a pity. Refurbishments normally make places better. This one appears to have been a step backwards

Popped in yesterday for the roast with friends and it was superb! The pub has always had a reputation for good food, however it has been refurbished recently and the traditional Sunday roast has only recently returned so we thought we should check it out. It already busy at 12:30 and we managed to push some tables together to accommodate our group. There were already many customers tucking into huge plates of food. We tried the beef and pork options and they were so good. All the trimmings were very well cooked, the Yorkshire puddings were perfect and we had to ask for more gravy as it was so moreish, The pub has a more traditional raised area, where we sat, and modern bar on the lower floor where plenty of drinkers were enjoying the afternoon football. There is also a huge garden and even a gig venue upstairs! The staff were very friendly and couldn't have been any more helpful. The mixed clientele was testament to how welcoming the guys are and makes a fantastic option from the conveyor belt Cowley Road and surrounding area pubs. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed whether its for food, drink or entertainment!

A top notch venue for food, drink and music.

The customer service was star quality, however, the whole meal was dry and solid. Not only was the meal cold but the beef was tough and the gravy was very thin and lacked favour. After being told by numerous people that this was recommended as a 10/10 roast, we have left feeling resentful towards paying the price we did. I will say the manager was apologetic and did say that they had only started serving food. As a group of students, we would not return.

Watched England v USA Women’s World Cup w a great crowd. Bartender was hilarious! In another room, a group was playing various harps. Interesting mix of people in a local pub.

Recently and tastefully refurbished. There are tables outside on the pavement and a spacious courtyard area at the rear. Decent pint of Old Trip. Staff are friendly. I hear they are starting to have gigs again n the upstairs room which is great.

Love this place! We frequently come here for drinks and recently, really enjoyed their Sunday roast dinner. The music is great, bar staff are very friendly and there is a nice, relaxed feel about the place. Very much looking forward to visiting in the summer once the beer garden has had its re-vamp!

A typical English pub without too many pretensions, but they offer live music and a good selection of beers, there is plenty of space even if it is sometimes full. The staff is approachable and helpful. Not far from the center and easily accessible by bus. If you want an unpretentious beer with friends, it's a great place. Warm and welcoming in winter

I literally will be dreaming about the Sunday roast from here. It's delicious and with a perfectly cooked Yorkshire pudding to boot. Be sure to get there right when it opens on a Sunday!

I love a good pub! And having moved recently to Oxford a good mix between affordable and welcoming was tough. I went to many pubs around town, there really is some amazing selections. But Port Mahon sticks out for me as it doesn't try to be the best, it is what it is. It is a lovely local where if you don't like it you can go to others. Management are amazing Nell, and John do a great job at improving what they can when they can, I love the place. Also on a side note the roast is amazing! The beers are great! AND I have visited alone, in couples and in groups, Great function space upstairs

Un pub decente lejos del turista con un poco inusual de hamburguesas (creo que cambian el menú regularmente) y una buena elección de cerveza. Fuimos como un grupo de 10 personas para ver una de las matemáticas de la Copa Mundial de Fútbol 2018: había algunas pantallas en el pub y una pantalla en el jardín (no muy grande, por lo que tenía que venir con anticipación para reservar el espacio de infromt de la pantalla). Ellos también tienen arreglado bar en el jardín para acelerar el servicio. Un lugar agradable, pub muy pubish.

We went for the quiz night on Sundays, it was good fun and not taken so seriously. Highly recommended.

El fuego de leña fue una agradable sorpresa y los libros en el alféizar de la ventana también fueron algo agradable. El personal es encantador y amable. The Port has a nice balance of locals & students. The bar staff are very welcoming & it does great Sunday lunches.
