The Castle Inn in Blaenau Gwent

The best restaurant in the local area by a fair distance. We went for Sunday dinner with one side of the family, and then raved about it so much that the other side of the family demanded we go with them. Great service and really fair pricing too.

Have been here twice and the experience has been the same both times. The place is too cold (I went prepared this time in tights and a jumper). We pre-ordered, but the food arrived 50 minutes after we had sat down. When the food does arrive, it is delicious and the service, when it happens, is really good. I wouldn't choose to go back because of the cold and the waiting, which is a shame as the food is tasty and the staff are lovely.

We had a cosy dinner for 2 last night at The Castle. We shared the belly pork with Mac n cheese and the garlic mushrooms for starters, they were absolutely delicious. Then we both had the steak pie which has been excellent every time I’ve had it, light flaky pastry, tender beef and a mouthwatering savoury sauce. A lovely bottle of Malbec to accompany the meal, a slice of white chocolate cheesecake followed by a chilly starlit walk home rounded the night off beautifully. Thank you to all the staff who are always very welcoming ☺️

Oh my goodness - we’ve been fortunate enough to try a few new restaurants lately but none compare to The Castle Inn. Always comfortable, cosy and welcoming… staff are superb, attentive when needed but not intrusive allowing you to enjoy your meal. The food tonight was on another level … I had the roast belly pork and partner had the tandoori rump of Welsh lamb .. both dishes were so tasty, cooked to perfection and fresh (no skimpy portion sizes either) … both had garlic mushrooms to start. It’s always well booked up but the chef/owner Jon accommodated us at short notice 😃 if you like great food, reasonable prices, good service and quality then you won’t be disappointed …… We will be returning again and again to this Gem 💎

My husband and I found this little gem of a place on trip advisor and what a gem it is! The food was amazing, my husband had the pie and I had the chicken and it did not disappoint. We also took advantage of the free cheesecake dessert offer they had on which was a lovely gesture. I did think that as it was free it might have just been a frozen one but how wrong I was, it was homemade and delicious like the mains we’d had eaten. The service and the decor were fab aswell! We can’t wait to go back and eat by the open fire!

Excellent service, lovely friendly staff and the food was fantastic. Booked for a family birthday meal, in total 19 of us ! Considering we were a large party, all our meals come out together and piping hot ! Highly recommend.

We were a party of 12, all 12 absolutely enjoyed the food, service was very friendly and didnt have to wait long, which is great when you have hungry children in your party, in our opinion the best of local eateries in the area, will definitely be back.

Visited The Castle Inn on Sunday 1st December for Sunday lunch. The restaurant had recently reopened,after a number of weeks of closure. A new chef had been appointed. Our party of 3 was warmly welcomed, and shown to our table on arrival. Our drinks order was taken and we were told that the menu was listed on the blackboards on the wall. Two of our party ordered starters:- the pate and the soup. The chicken liver pate was served with crusty bread, butter and a sweet chutney. The tomato and roasted red pepper soup, also came with crusty bread and butter. The hot soup was most welcome on a cold December day and was very tasty. For our mains 2 of us ordered the roast pork, with one of our party ordering the lamb.All 3 dishes came with roast potatoes, sage and onion stuffing and broccoli spears. A selection of peas, carrots , beans and boiled potatoes were also provided, together with extra gravy. Portions were generous and everything was nicely presented and well cooked. None of our party had any room left to try the desserts, on this occasion. Waiting staff were attentive, welcoming and friendly. Will definitely be back, and maybe we'll try the sticky toffee pudding next time!

Highly recommend this B&B! We had booked here for 1 night as we were at a friends wedding nearby. Checkin time was during the afternoon but, as the wedding was from 1pm; I had called ahead a week before to ask if it would be ok to arrive around 11.30, and would happily pay for the extra time. I was advised this was absolutely no problem at all and there would be no extra charge. We arrived around 11.45, the doors were locked and the number on the door wasn't being answered. I called the number for the Manager I had spoken to the week before and he couldn't have been any more helpful! It materialised Alan, who's number was on the front door and I couldn't get an answer for, was inside he just hadn't heard the phone. Alan came down to meet us and what a lovely man he is, so welcoming and couldn't do enough for us. He carried our bags upstairs and drove us to the wedding venue about 10 minutes up the road (getting a taxi in this area can be tricky - we found you need to book at least 24 hours in advance). He even offered to pick us up! (We had a taxi booked so didn't need to).Breakfast (I had the full English) was lovely- nice quality food and not greasy. Alan was there to welcome us along with a lovely lady who was working with him, we could have sat and spoken to Alan all day! The room we had (2) was a double with a large bathroom. The room was clean (apart from some cobwebs) and the bed really comfortable. The towels smelt nice and were nice and soft. The only thing I would say is the B&B is a little out dated with its decor- but don't let this put you off.Alan advised the B&B is dog friendly so I am hoping to come back and stay with my dog.I hope a new chef can be found soon as the menus on the wall looked really nice but sadly food isn't available at the moment (although interviews for a new Chef are in progress). Alan waved us goodbye, even gave mu friend a hug as we left! What a lovely find - if you choose to stay here, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Myself and my wife decided to book, online, an impromptu short break in Wales as we have never been before and came across the Castle Inn.We arrived on Sunday afternoon around 4pm but there was no one available to let us in, just a note with a number to call. On calling the number we spoke to the owner Alan who said he would be with us in around 5 minutes. Sure enough he arrived and was very welcoming.He booked us in and explained that they were not open on Sunday evenings or Monday so we could not have an evening meal, but they will be doing breakfasts.Unfortunately we were only there until Tuesday so did not have the opportunity to sample the evening menu. Now, that was of no fault of Alan. If we had checked before hand we would of found this information out.Alan was an absolute gentleman. Very helpful, even carrying our case to our room. He said that should we have any questions then to just give him a call.Our room, room 2, was quaint and comfy. It had a T.V. its own bathroom with toiletries and tea and coffee making facilities. The double bed was comfortable so a good night's sleep needed after a very long journey.The breakfast was a full cooked breakfast. I would say it was an adequate size as some places do pile it onto the plate a bit excessively. You also had a choice of cereal if you wanted. Tea, coffee and orange juice was supplied as well.The waitress, Gabrielle, was very polite welcoming us on both mornings with a smile and a warm welcome.Alan was a gentleman to the carrying our suitcase to the car and bidding us a safe journey home and waited at the side of the road to wave us off on our way.Overall a very enjoyable stay.

We booked to stay for 2 nights, with our dog, to do some hill walking. On the day of our check in, I received a phone call from a very nice gentleman to get an idea of our arrival time. Due to bad weather, we arrived later than expected, but this was no problem. We were welcomed and taken to our room (5), which was lovely and spacious ! It had an entrance hall, main bedroom and bathroom. The bed was comfy, the room was homely and there were toiletries, tea and coffee making facilities and a TV. Breakfast was delicious, all produce are locally sourced and/or Welsh, which was a great touch. Alan, the proprietor, was an absolute delight ! Nothing was too much trouble; the best way to describe the property would be a good standard B&B, but with more privacy - it is welcoming and warm, without feeling that you are staying in someone’s house. We enjoyed a fantastic steak on our second night staying, and were sad not to be staying a third night, having heard how good the Sunday roast is ! The location was great, easy access to the brecons etc. Lovely view of the garden from our room. Very dog friendly, even set us up a table on the edge of the restaurant so our boy could join us for breakfast. We look forward to staying with Alan and his team again.

Well what place is this lol we all got together as family which isn’t often so we decided to travel to castle inn in Ebbw Vale rassau for a lovely meal N catch up only to find the pub open (great) and NO Chef lol yes that’s right We were told you can have drink but no food Until nxt week lol Really how can You run a place sorry what a shambles totally waste of time We quickly looked up google and came across The mountain air inn just up the rd Yes open and surprising they had a chef cooking ........**********

We went there with the family to celebrate our Silver anniversary. The welcome was good and cheerful. Good was reasonably priced for Sunday lunch with a choice of four meats and you could order 1,2 or 3 courses. The food was well presented and served quickly and efficiently even though there were 20 of us in the party. Would have no Dugout in recommending the Castle and would definitely go there again

Excellent Sunday dinner. The service is attentive and friendly. The food is beautifully cooked and plentiful. There has been a change of chef within the last six months and the quality of food has improved.

Lovely place very welcoming Alan the proprietor greeted us and was very warming and friendly.

e just had a family celebration of 24 ppl this evening. We made it as simple as possible for the owner, by calling the order through before hand.

13 of us went to the castle for steak night. It was absolutely amazing, service was brilliant and the steak was out of this world. Everyone in the party passed comment on how nice their food was. The steak was cooked to Perfection and to everyone’s liking. Not everyone had steak, others had the burger, chicken, ribs, Vegetarian option and a kids meal. Again all the meals where outstanding. All of our food came out at the same time, considering we were a large party they accommodated us wonderfully. Thank you so much for giving us a great night. We will definitely be back

It Friday lunchtime and we’re in the area visiting my mother-in-law in hospital. This ‘restaurant’ is closed and looks like a dump anyway. How it has 4.5 out of 5 on tripadvisor I don’t know.

Never got to Castle Inn, as Storm Callum was hitting South Wales. Family member who lives not far from accommodation advised don't come as weather to bad. Manager of Castle Inn said not to bad just rain was not sympathic and would still charge £110 for room as he advised had to turn people away, I don't think!

I don;t understand why no one answers the phone when you ring, they sometimes ring you back but by then it might be too late, therefore they lose business. The waitress was not skilled at all. I only had a starter of smoked salmon with cold potato salad, I left most of it but stayed with my wife through her main course. I looked at the desserts to kill time and decided on the sherry trifle, I asked said witress if she could please get a measure of sherry from the bar to put it in my dessert. When it arrived it was in a skimpy small glass jar about 4 inches tall with synthetic cream on top, so no sherry then. It ruined my night, I left and sat in the car in the car park I was so disgusted and left my card with my wife.

Excellent evening meal for our small group of three cooked freshly by the talented chef. We were served by the lovely Nyree who was wonderful, nothing was too much trouble. A lovely evening treat.

Had my works leaving party here. Food was amazing. There was 7 different meals and chef prepared and serve them all at the same time. Fresh produce and well presented on the plate. Good size portions and reasonably priced. Excellent service. Would highly recommend this little quaint essential Welsh pub and restaurant.

Met up here with some friends for Sunday lunch. The staff were lovely. We ordered 2 roasts and a veggie roast. It arrived almost too promptly!

Decided to visit having left it rather late to book Sunday Lunch elsewhere and The Castle being just a short distance away. On entering the premises there was a small smell of urine eminating from the gents. The bar is quite dated and could do with modernisation. The eating area is very nice but was quite cold which was disappointing as there was a large open fire which wasn't lit.

The castle inn, located in the Rassau area of Ebbw Vale, serves nicely cooked food but when I called there only offered a limited menu, what we had was nicely served though, received a warm welcome

Lovely meal and service, if a little overpriced for area ... let down badly by cleanliness of ladies facilities. Broken toilet seat, dirty toilets and numerous cobwebs ( indicating not cleaned regularly) interior decor of restaurant also 'cold' feeling - not much attention to detail being paid .... such a shame as this is a lovely, characterful place not being shown in its best light at present.

The Castle has been recently renovated inside and out, has a great pool table, dartboard and digital jukebox. Friday afternoon through into the night is busy. Friday night has an artist and disco and has a mostly older crowd from 40-70 years old. Last Friday was a full crowd, great relaxed atmosphere, Holsten Pills lager was a great lovely pint there. Saturday and Sunday night has a band there and it's always full at 10pm on a Saturday. Band starts at 9pm and it's best to get there by 8.45pm if you need a seat. Recommended!

On an chilly and rainy summernight we were welcomed by the friendly staff and cosy fire. We tried the steak and caramelized onion pie and the homemade lasagna. Both were really tasty and we really enjoyed our meal.

Viernes Santo la mujer decidió que debería ir a la Brecon Brecons después de un buen paseo decidimos pasar la noche nos encontramos este lugar en reserva. com y lo reservamos alrededor de una hora y media antes de que aparezca la habitación era efectivamente ocupada por el dueño y cuando llegamos, pero bueno sólo tenían media hora de aviso. nos ofrecieron una bebida en el bar y se sentó al lado de la chimenea mientras esperamos, la habitación era muy bonita y acogedora y tenía todo lo necesario, además de café y aperitivos.

First time visiting here but definitely won't be the last, although not a huge choice on the lunch menu what we had was delicious, the food was piping hot and welll presented and the homemade lemon meringue was a winner, can't wait to go again to try a different dish.

The garlic mushroom starter one of the best starters i`ve had anywhere. The lunch very nice, the vegetables a little undercooked, the meet was lovely. Didn`t have a dessert.

Well presented and tasty food in a lovely old pub. We had Sunday lunch which tasted very nice and was very reasonably priced.

Greeted by two lovely girls who gave us roses and showed us to our table. Steak and pulled lamb stunning and the bacon and stilton sauce was amazing. Followed by the white chocolate and red velvet cheesecake yum. Wonderful staff as always nothing to much trouble we are so lucky to live nearby so we can try such fantastic food and atmosphere.

We went the The Castle as a family group for Christmas Lunch.OK - so I accept it's Christmas Lunch and there's a lot of pressure BUT .. when you're charging premium prices for Christmas Day you have to deliver - and sadly they spectacularly failed.Service was pleasant - but poor.The food was at best OK - but burnt gravy?? They actually started to run out of food and the last plate was a plate of end pieces of meat and what ever was left over.I admire the ambition - but never again - sorry .. ..

Having never been to the castle as we normally eat down Abergavenny way and our friends come down to us. We decided to come up to them. What a lovely scene on arriving at 6.45pm to see the castle all lit up with lights. So welcoming . On entering an open fire was burning and on a night when -1c was needed. Staff were very friendly and attentive. I had chicken rolled and stuffed with bacon and cheese. The chips were stunning. The meal could have benefited from a garnish of salad/veg as well as been shoots. The other meals of fish(moby dick size) , steak & ale pie and steak were all well received. The guys also indulged in hot choc fudge cake and plates were cleaned!!. Then made the most of the open fire till we left at 9.50pm. Will definitely go again and recommend. Su

Me & my partner visited The Castle Inn this evening as I heard amazing reviews on this place. We was both very pleased with our meals; I had the chicken & bacon roulade and my partner had the lamb burger. We would recommend both these meals as they were delicious with lovely presentation. Also, the staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for us!Overall, the restaurant is very cosy and welcoming and we will definitely be returning in the future.. Food could not fault it , as soon as you finished your meal your bill was put on the table and they wanted to out as soon as possible 'they have no hospitality manners what so ever !! Would. Xmas menu only with a few alternatives for main. No prices shown on Xmas menu. Had alternative main. Bull came and shocked to be charged £7 each for mushroom starter!! Nothing special at all, nice fire but no atmosphere, staff were polite won't be coming back look after your locals guys not rip them off!

we had excellent meal lamb rolypoly and lamb shanks were to die for, lovely setting with exceptional food, starters were amazing portoions good so much so we couldnt manage dessert, spent the night here in there double room which was very comfortable, prices were good what you would expect to pay for quality food, staff could not have been more helpful we even had a complimentary drink as it was our wedding anniversary we will return

Three of us met for lunch at the Castle Inn we all had 3 courses which at £15 per head was very good value and delicious. Attentive but unobtrusive staff, food was well presented and delicious

First time here today for Sunday lunch and it was delicious. Garlic mushrooms, followed by roast lamb and lemon tart for dessert. Mushrooms were perfect and the lamb was falling apart. Beautiful food that did not disappoint. Will have to try the evening menu now. Faultless food.

Noticed on social media that The Castle Inn were doing "take-away" Sunday lunches. Having had numerous eat in's, which were A1 by the way, thought we would give them ago as we were a bit busy and pushed for time, take-away suited perfectly. Absolutely fantastic!!!, beef is so tender and the trimmings were lovely, portion size was just right and all served with a separate pot of delicious gravy. So in future it's eat-in or take away from The Castle Inn for Sunday lunch !!!!!

We came here recently for Sunday lunch as I was visiting my mum. We thought we would try it as the reviews on line were good. We were disappointed I am afraid. There were three of us and we were only given one small bowel of vegetables between us and the parsnips were so hard we could not eat them. The staff were friendly and accommodating though.

Enjoyed a fabulous steak which was cooked just how I wanted - pink. My husband enjoyed the pie which was very tasty, of which I had previous visit, a couple of weeks ago. Met Gareth one of the chefs and Chloe the waitress who was very attentive and friendly. Booked to go this Sunday for lunch so looking forward to the treat. Would definitely recommend dining here.

What a hidden gem this place is. I was over from England visiting friends who live in Merthyr and they have visited a few times before so suggested we go for Sunday lunch. It was fantastic. I had chicken which was delicious. The potion sizes are just right - two decent sized pieces of chicken, a stuffing ball, two roast and two boiled potatoes and a side serving of veg. The gravy was divine. We all had dessert - there was a great choice ranging from deconstructed cheesecake, to sticky toffee pudding to Eton mess. Service was quick and efficient with very friendly staff and the decor was pleasant. I would thoroughly recommend.

We were initially given a room with a kitchen extractor vent rising directly outside the window. It was an incredibly hot day and the smell of fat frying coming through the window was nauseating. My husband complained to the manageress and her reply was "well it is a budget room" we hadn't requested a budget room, nor had this been mentioned previously. We were moved fairly swiftly and all was good. The manageress is lacking somewhat in her customer service, but the rest if the staff were lovely. Great breakfast although the toaster is operated by guests and bread got stuck almost resulting in a fire. It took some while to enlist the help of a member of staff.

So glad to see this pub back to how it should be run. We have been regulars for a long time and glad to say its better than ever some nice new meals on the menu, we love the sunday lunch lovely staff was only gutted that we were too full to try the desserts never mind there is always next time.

Went for a meal for a friends birthday, lovely food, couldn't fault it. Everything came out together which was lovely, as there's nothing worse than someone eating their food whilst you're still waiting for yours. The service was faultless and there were no long waits between courses! Definitely be going there again!

Visited mid week for dinner. Ordered the steak pie just as the waitress recommended. Steak was chewy and too cold. Served with peas which were completely overcooked. Asked for ice cream with the sticky toffee pudding but they were out of ice cream! Thought we'd finish with a coffee but they had no coffee that night.Not going back.

Went there for a family meal. Great service, great food and definitely will be going there again. Great selection of starters, meals and deserts, that's if you have the room. Good selection of drinks too. I recommend the steak.

Visited the Castle for Sunday Lunch with the family. I had heard good things about the food from friends, so made the decision to try it out - So glad that we did! The food was absolutely beautiful and cooked to perfection. Food all arrived hot and much sooner than we had expected. I had the beef dinner and it was one of the best I'd had! Service was also great. Staff were very friendly and keen to help. Also spoke with the new owner who was very nice and regularly checked that everything was OK. The pub itself was intimate and very nice and clean. Not sure why there are bad reviews on here as we had the most pleasant experience. 10/10 and will recommend to anyone that is looking for fab home cooked meals, great customer service and a friendly atmosphere.

This is my second post as The Castle Inn seems to have 2 profiles on here...I've never been compelled to write a review before but the service here tonight left a lot to be desired. Around 18 of us were here for a family birthday... We pre ordered our food 4 days ago to speed up the process. Our meals filtered out slowly and piece by piece... With chips/jacket potatoes separately and veg after half of the meal had been eaten. I'd finished my gammon and jacket potato by the time my cousins meal (well the rice and naan bread) had been brought out. The food wasn't the best... I'd ordered gammon, jacket potato and salad. I got gammon on a plate with egg and pineapple... then chips in a pot. Which I then swapped for the potato. This cost me £13!!The staff took ages to clean our plates away... mainly because they spent the majority of the evening outside smoking. I had to go and find them so we could pay and leave... They weren't at the bar but sat outside smoking. We then found out that my brother's vegetarian lasagne was supposed to come with chips and garlic bread. Instead he had a spoonful of lasagne slopped on a plate with some peas. They gave us his meal for free... I don't think anyone enjoyed thier food... and I wouldn't recommend that anyone bother going here. Stay at home and get a takeaway. You'll get more for your money!

14 in our party on sat night past. one of the party 21st birthday. we met a short while before meal time and had 1 or 2 drinks. we all had starters followed by main courses. the service was swift and polite. the owner was extremely helpful with any questions being answered very professionally. all of the party had an excellent night and we all agreed that because we are local to this establishment we should use more as new owner and staff far more accommodating than staff of old.

Family of six attended and three of the meals sent back.the garlic mushroom starter was exactly the same as the main bland and watery, the chicken was not grilled it was boiled.steak apauling and tasteless had to be sent back and not even given a steak knife, saying that a chain saw would not cut through it. Never again!!!!!!!!!!Overpriced disappointment .Only us attended no atmosphere lights in the kitchen turned off when we finished did not feel welcome.over priced for rubbish food.would not recommend!!!!!

The staff were very friendly & accomodating, couldn't do enough for you. I originally booked table for four but they allowed me to bring another 3 members at very short notice. The meals overall were lovely but one of my party said her fish was cold. They ran out of pork on the menu & strawberry cheesecake which was disappointing. Could have done with a few more vegetables on the side. I recommend the mango chicken which was very enjoyable. Thank you.
