The Castle Inn in North Devon

Went as a party of eight while on holiday nearby. Had high expectations given other reviews and we weren’t disappointed. Good range of traditional pub food, perfectly cooked, great portions and good value for money. What more could you want.

We are visiting Saunton Sands for a few days and went to The Castle Inn for lunch today. Made a last minute booking around 11 this morning and arrived for the midday sitting. The staff were really friendly and the food was superb!! Four of us had a Sunday roast and a drink each and the bill was just over £70. Unheard of in Hampshire! Honestly, I can’t recommend The Castle Inn highly enough, and we will definitely be going back next time we visit north Devon.

What an amazing find! After a day out nearby, we were looking for somewhere to relax and eat and the Castle Inn did not disappoint. Friendly pub which is the beating heart of a welcoming community. Excellent menu, food is good value and the interior is lovely. They offer all sorts for the community which is fantastic. We will be returning!

Came across this beautiful pub in a little village, serving lovely, hearty home cooked meals that were served well and were very filling . The mango cheesecake was amazing. Staff were friendly and welcoming and I would deffinate recommend this as a place to visit and eat!

though I have been to the Castle a couple of times in passing thiswas the first full evening I had spent there. We went for the regular tuesday night pub quiz which was really good and very well attended. The publican is clearly working hard to not only run a great pub but to be the heart of the community. As it was mainly regulars we were the "Newbies" and the landlord who was also quiz master was really attentive to ensure we were well looked after and knew what was going on. I was plenetly surprised to see the amount of additional activities the pub has on from knitting groups to games afternoons, being the local post office and with a small shop. Loads of green flags for me of a pub thats being run with compassion. It's completley clean, the beer is well kept and reasonably priced, a good selection of AF beers. Pretty sure we will return for more quiz nights there and going to check out the sunday roast too. There is alarge beer garden with additional shelters outside for smokers and none smokers alike, good facilities for dogs etc and reasonable disabled access. The pub building itself is a lovely 19C build with lots of character, At 6'7" I enjoyed the usual obstical course of low cielings you get in lots of pubs in the area. All in all a reallly good and well hosted night with everything you would want from a country village pub. Thanks team at the Castle. Keep it up!

Lovely pub with friendly staff. It's clear they've made a real effort to become a centre for the local community, while also welcoming to people from further afield. Joined some friends for the Tuesday pub quiz, and I can safely say I'll be attending as often as possible.

Food was very plentiful and cooked to perfection price was very good staff were excellent and joyful have been twice in the last three days as down on holiday locally when back down will definitely be going again

Pulled in on the off chance to get a light snack. We ended up having a meal and wow the food so hot, loads of it too. Staff was so friendly and polite. Amazing place definitely going again.

Never fails to disappoint. The service is non existent. We were locals for three years and rarely got served, to the extent that other customers actually ordered for us. Not been back for five years but found ourselves nearby so dropped in. Again, stood at the bar waiting for several minutes. People came in behind and the bartender called out to ask what they wanted - not acknowledging me standing in front of her. Left without a drink yet again. Avoid!!

Met with friends and enjoyed an excellent Sunday lunch at The Castle, Landkey. Lovely food, beef really tender, loads of veggies and enormous Yorkshire puds. Landlord and staff very welcoming, with attentive service, we will definitely be back.

We had a lovely family meal recently. The staff made us feel welcome and the service and food was excellent.

Traditional local pub, welcoming, great food,traditional beers, spirits and cider, quiz every month, live music and regular jazz sessions. Great outdoor seating area with live music. Superb breakfast, an asset to a village. Lunch menu is great produce, a veritable feast. Just had the fish finger sandwiches on sourdough, home made fish fingers, best I've had. New menu and overs 60's club too.

Was recommended to the castle, wish I wasn't. Quite disappointed. Over salted pork, strange flavours to the red cabbage which wasn't pickled. Vegetable's poorly executed. £9 for a glass of wine. Just shy of £50 for Sunday lunch and drink X2.

What a lovely lunch and service we received at the Castle Inn. Tania, who served us took our order, advised us on what else was available and it was lovely. She I must add, also advised us on taking out their over 60’s club card, which benefits us when we attend again. It was just the lovely food that made our day, but her service and the whole experience of a lovely, village pub. Keep up the good service and quality.

Wow, This place I amazingly unique the Bar Staff of Darren, Lee, the stunning chef of Nicki and the cask beers are brilliant to see. I have just had the rack of ribs with bar-be que sauce which was stunning and succulent. I will be coming back again. Well done all especially the management for employing such good staff 👏

Met friends for a meal but only one of us ended up eating. Read good reviews but our steak & ale pie was inedible & was sent back to the kitchen. The steak was tough & the gravy was watery & grey. Very disappointed as we had hoped to make this pub our regular meet up place. Chef did not come to our table to apologise and left it to the waiting staff which seemed unfair.

After recently moving into the village we received an amazing welcome to the community. The food was absolutely first class and the staff were exceptionally friendly. Look forward to our next visit.

Landlord and staff are incredibly welcoming. Great ambience and food service is exceptional. The bbq ribs are sublime and portions are huge. I had the special ‘lamb burger with mint dressing’ and all the trimming. So worth the visit and they do a Friday breakfast and theme nights. Nice for a small village pub to offer so much 👍

I recently dined at The Castle Pub in Landkey. The food was excellent, with generous portions. The service was lacking, though I believe this was due to inexperience rather than poor service. I shared the rib platter and the burger, and both were very good. The evening concluded with a cheesecake and ice cream dessert. Unfortunately, the dessert was served on a hot plate, causing the ice cream to melt before being served. Despite this, I was pleasantly surprised by the experience and would not hesitate to eat here again.

Met up with friends for lunch. Not too busy, seated in restaurant, order taken. Fish and chips, Scampi and chips and a ham egg and chips. Unfortunately we had to return my husbands fish and chips as it did not taste quite right. Staff very good, replaced immediately and cut the charge from a regular to small portion. Second fish and chips was good. Friendly staff.

Arrived in Landkey after a long drive and sought out the Castle Inn - we were not disappointed! The weather was great, so we were seated in the gardens to the rear - didn’t have to wait long to be served with great fish and chips! Food prices were reasonable, as were the drinks……. We did intend to return during our visit, but other plans took over 😟 - will definitely call again when in the area!

Friendly attentive staff & one of the best steaks I have had in a long time. Food & drinks reasonably priced. Good atmosphere.

This was without doubt on of the best meals we have had in a long time. 3 had the rack of ribs and 1 the smash burger. All were fantastic. Puddings equally good. If you are able to definitely come here. Staff very friendly too.

Stopped off here on the way back from a day out. Well, what can I say, I have never had a meal to beat this. This was 3 pork ribs in BBQ sauce and one smashed burger, by far the best meal I have had in many, many, many a year. You will not be disappointed with any aspect of the Castle Inn in Lankey North Devon.

Table not ready despite booking in advance and travelling a long distance. Service slow. Food good (but not as good as was suggested - "27 hours cooked in black treacle"), WiFi code must be someone's idea of a joke! Facilities outdated. Disappointing visit

We ate the Sunday menu there. Excellent ! The desserts are also very good :). The atmosphere in the bar is very nice and there is a nice terrace behind it. Very friendly waitress.

We called in for some food and beer on a Tuesday early evening. Warm welcome, great beer, good menu, good service and a friendly atmosphere. And our lovely dog Polly was as warmly welcomed as we were. Keep doing what you’re doing. Super pub.

Walked from Bishops Tawnton to Landkey with some friends along the Tarka trail. Took a short detour to get to the Castle Inn for a lovely lunch. It was close to the kitchen closing but the staff were very patient with five hungry kids in our group. Food was great, and the service was excellent - even rustling us up some desserts despite the time of day.

We went in for a late lunch. Lovely welcome, nice garden and dog friendly. Even though it was 3pm, they served up a very yummy lunch- catering also for our fussy teenager. Would definitely recommend.

Went with a party of 16 people (who came from all over the world for a wedding). The food was great ( chef was young lady, didn't get her name) loads of parking for everyone and the service was great & friendly ( Owen). I was worried as I recomened this place to the family, it delivered in bucketloads

Warmly greeted by bar staff and group of "local bar flys" at a lunchtime lol. Food, service very good. Old pub many original features including low headroom through doorways.

Some original old features prevail throughout. Very friendly, efficient staff and locals too. Choice of ales Food good. Comfy seating.

They squeezed us in when busy & the food & service was brilliant. The Beef Burger was very tasty & the Lager well kept.

Wanted a cheeky Wednesday night tea out with my elderly parents and chose this local pub. Staff were really lovely and accommodating, main course was great and dessert even better!! Would recommend 👍

Typical ' locals ' pub.....traditional in decor. Was looking for a good burger and to be honest can't fault the one we had, nice chips served with it and a really tasty coleslaw. Didn't stop any longer than to eat our meal ...footy was on and wasnt interested in watching it. Plenty of parking and the the pub rules listed outside in the beer garden !!!!

My family and myself ate at the castle on Thursday 27th June the meals were excellent the steaks were juicy and the peas were not like bullets. The owner and staff are friendly and welcoming will definitely go back

Seriously good honest food, the moment we sat down, landlord and staff are great. After we’d been served our drinks and place a food order, landlords comes over introduced himself as the landlord, says “folks hope everything is good, anything ye need, come to me, enjoy!” Every fifteen mins he sweeps through, connecting even if it’s just a glance and smile, exchanges with other patrons. Creates a super comfortable vibe! Highly recomended!

Staff and beef roast lovely, just one criticism if only the plates were hot so food wouldn't go cold quickly . Wouldn't go again.

A superb pub, with welcoming staff and Dogs welcome too!!! We all ate as a family and thoroughly enjoyed all meals that were served. We would definitely recommend and we will be returning without question.

We came here for a family roast meal last Sunday, the food was awesome and very friendly staff, lovely outside area too, we will definitely be back :-)

Popped in for a soft drink at lunchtime on a week day, it wasn't busy Had a hot pasty from the bar, it was delicious!! Staff seemed friendly and helpful, offered to reheat our pasty if not hot enough. But it was fine, it was served on a plate with little sachets of sauce, a napkin and cutlery. Nice presentation for a pasty!! Lovely large beer garden, very clean and dogs allowed inside and out I saw some of the main lunches being brought out, they looked very impressive On our next visit we will definitely be trying their home cooked food! Clean toilets and accessible through the bar which went out into a paved patio area The garden was up some steps, not sure how a wheelchair would access the garden Small car park at the front, not much manoeuvrability for a larger vehicle! But there is some street parking

Lovely place, but staff was very rude they didn't seem like they wanted to be there let alone serve a local, was sat alone at the bar waiting to be served, someone guys came and got served before me even though I was waiting a while, don't work in hospitality if your not hospital

Best Sunday roast we've ever had.

Just had THE best Sunday roast. The beef was meltingly tender, never tasted beef like this. The vegetables of roasted carrot and parsnip, peas, broccoli and red cabbage were beautifully cooked. The gluten free gravy was extremely good and the Yorkshire was crispy. The roast potatoes were fluffy and not greasy. We ate everything. Glad we had the small one which was plenty enough. Fabulous friendly staff made us feel so welcome. I would ignore the bad reviews as this was a very special roast and for £9.95 exceptional value for money. Can't wait until we can go again.

Super Sunday roast in a fabulous family friendly pub. We were a group of 9 and all of us really enjoyed our food particularly the impressive Yorkie puds! Very friendly staff, nice to see the pub supporting the village with a small shop too. Very much enjoyed and highly reccomend.

Came in the other night with my husband and children and we had such a delightful experience and was serviced by a lovely short blonde young man. Specifically, the ribs were marvellous, the buttermilk chicken burger was beatifully cooked as well. We will be back again on our next adventure down to Devon 🤪🥰

Went here last night with a group of girl friends. We had a great dinner, with wonderful friendly service. The food came out timely, hot and was delicious. It set us of well for the quiz. The bar staff cleared away our playes and drinks as required and kept coming back to check we were pkay or needed refills. There was also a pub quiz going on too which we participated in and I can honestly say we haven't laughed like that in ages. The quiz was explained to us, we were made to feel so wellcome and I know we completely took over with our giggly enthusiasm but the staff laughed with us, and never once did we feel judged. We didn't come last even with some of our ridiculous answers so theres a bonus. We walked out laughing and smiling, planning our next trip back. We also loved that the money raised goes to charity. The castle is more than a pub its a community looking after its own and we felt very embraced by you. Thank you to the wonderful people we met last night, that gave us one of our best nights In a very long time. It's clear that everyone at the castle works very hard and really cares about the food, the service and the people who walk in. They work hard and take great pride in what they do.

We decided on going out for lunch on Sunday for a good old roast dinner and after being recommended the castle we decided to give them ago and booked. On arrival we proceeded to the bar to say we have arrived, but there was no acknowledgement from the bar waitress. ( Just a simple will be with you in one minute). Would have been fine . After some time we were acknowledged and advised to go round and someone will look after you. We went round to the restaurant and lo and behold I was left standing there for another 10 minutes with not one member of staff acknowledging us. Even tho I believe the gentleman that made eye contact several times was the manager on duty and has Noo customer service skills. Eventually the girl that asked us to round popped through and saw us and said u still not been seen , and then she sat on us on a table . Order was taken for our lunch by the gentleman, we ordered 2 Sunday lunches 1 gammon and one beef, the gent then walked away my partner asked me if he asked if we are having large or small. So I had to check what he had ordered us . Food arrived quite swiftly Both plates looking quite good. Then a smallest little dish of vegetables peas, cabbage and 2 bits of small broccoli for 2 came out which really in my opinion should have been for 1 person . We stated to eat to find that the vege was tepid, my beef was cold , carrot warm, cabbage cold ,peas cold just was NOT good. Overall the food was not great at all , service was poor.

Just an ok experience. Food was average, could tell some of it was just from the freezer and they had run out of haddock as it wasn’t defrosted yet! Considering how close we are to fresh local produce this was a shame and the prices of food high considering this. We couldn’t understand why the plant based option was more expensive than meat on the menu. Service ok, we were asked if food was ok however friend asked for the bill and it wasn’t brought to us so 40 minutes later we went up to bar to sort paying.

The food for Sunday roast was delicious and so well cooked. There was ample on the plate as well. The atmosphere was very pleasant and the venue was clean and tidy. All staff were so friendly and attentive. We will certainly be back and as soon as possible. Can’t wait.

Great atmosphere, simple uncomplicated pub grub and a good selection of real ale. This was my first visit and the bar lady was welcoming. The pub itself was attractive and all the daily papers were available. We'll be back.

Very poor roast dinner, meat was good apart from that was very poor Two carrots one parsnip very little gravy dry potatoes would not recommend

The food here is absolutely spot on, really cannot fault it. Mushrooms with peppercorn sauce starter, smashed burger for main and lamb cofta for my partner. Both utterly impressed.
