I was disappointed following the good reviews for this restaurant. It was busy & welcoming, but for me, the roast was not very good. My husband’s beef was quite tasty, but my pork tasteless & the potatoes awful. The veg was OK, but some of it not warm enough. Nothing was crispy or hot or tasty. The cauliflower cheese was not browned either. We were asked if the food was OK & said yes (I can’t be doing with the fuss over saying otherwise). But we won’t return.

In our fifty years of marriage we have had many afternoon teas in some special places but the afternoon tea at the Castle Hotel was one of the best we have had and also good value for what we had. We loved the starter of a small glass of hot soup and a piece of sausage roll which was delicious as was the rest of the meal. The staff were friendly and efficient. It was a really lovely experience and we will definitely be back when we are next in the area.

Nice place, good clean tables etc. The food was nice but there were things which could have been nicer / better. The humus came with focaccia, this was hard and there wasn't much of it, it would have been better with flatbreads or pitta, it was also a little too smooth really. The bouillabaisse was really tasty with a nice roll etc but I'd asked for no mussels if possible. The waitress came back and said the chef could pick them out but they / the taste was in the sauce. I said the sauce was fine, I wasn't allergic to them just didn't like the texture etc. I assumed the the whole ones would be picked out. Nope, the majority of what I got was mussels with probably 4 mouthfuls of fish, which was nice but that was all. Disappointing as they could easily have been removed. The rest of the meal was nice and the ladies all serving were polite and professional. It was also dog friendly with biscuits being given. It would have been nice to enjoy it more but our three courses were rushed through and we were done within 45 mins of arriving.

Arrived for a late lunch and to try the acclaimed local beer XXX (Three Tuns Brewery). Friendly staff served up a quality meal for us both (Halloumi orzo bake with olive salad and Halloumi burger). Our lunch was tasty if a tad expensive for a lunch time meal. However, the local beer was kept in really good order and went down extremely well. The attached gardens are lovely for that al fresco and quiet drink experience, as we returned for refreshment later in the week. A quality venue with good food and well kept beer.

We were staying in Bishop's Castle for our Golden Wedding celebration and had booked lunch at the Castle for a multi generational group of family and old friends. I had booked lunch outside in their stunning garden overlooking the Shropshire Hills but literally half an hour before lunch the heavens opened. The hotel staff were superb, bringing decorations inside and creating a wonderfully arranged table for us in their wood panelled restaurant. The food, which we pre ordered was excellent, beautifully presented and everyone got what they expected. We even had champagne from the local Kerry Vale vineyard. After lunch, the sun came out and we had our coffee and tea out in the garden - a perfect end to an excellent lunch. I can't thank the staff too much for making our day.

We ate dinner two nights and breakfast two mornings as we were staying at the hotel. The food has gone down market and down hill significantly since we visited a few years ago. No more fillet stakes. Most of the food appears to be out of the freezer and probably microwaved, not a lot of real cooking going on apart from heating up meat and frying fish. Our first night starters were a prawn cocktail which was frozen prawns and insipid sauce with a limp lettuce. Probably the worst version of this cliché I've ever eaten. The tempura king prawns were small frozen prawns with an insipid batter that has nothing to do with tempura. Pate was OK but bought in. Beef stroganoff was microwaved and bizarrely served with pappardelle, pie probably bought in and microwaved. Burgers too dense to be hand made and cooked OK but no real taste. Frozen chips. Strangely the onion rings were home made and very good and the buns were brioche. Puddings were OK but bought in. At breakfast toast was hardly darkened, porridge microwaved and not at all creamy. The full English was OK. The omelet was good. Wines were well priced and pretty good. There are lots of friendly waiting staff but service is a bit hap hazard and it can be hard to get staff's attention. Staff seem to have multiple jobs so nobody appears to be in control. Small bottles of prosecco were handed out unopened. Dog friendly probably to a fault. Dogs were allowed to sit at the table and be fed by their owners from their plates.

Absolutely lovely meal which we were so lucky to be able to eat as we hadn’t booked but thankfully they had room for us! We had the bread and olives to start which was a perfect size for us to share. My partner had the Steak and Kidney pie which he said the beef was cooked to perfection and he was delighted it came with chips and gravy. I had the bouillabaisse which was amazing and cooked to perfection. The service was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We sat in the bar dining room which was lovely and we were amazed how many areas you could eat in - the restaurant looked lovely! We would thoroughly recommend the hotel to anybody who is in Bishops Castle or surrounding area. You will get a warm welcome and lovely food.

The Castle is our usual go to for a special summer meal on a hot summer evening. So we looked at the forecast for last Saturday which was glorious and booked a table for 3 on the deck, to celebrate my retirement. We took drinks up to our table and ordered. Whilst my daughter and husband were impressed with their starters, I ordered the Caprese salad. which consisted of probably one medium sized tomato and half a ball of Mozzarella with a dressing, for £8.25! Our main courses arrived Lamb rump for my husband and 2 Bouillabaisse for myself and my daughter, all were beautiful although we did find it funny when ordering it that the waitress had no idea what we wanted and said ‘oooh you mean the fish stew’. We had visited the castle at the end of May on a similar balmy evening and had raved about the desserts, after waiting for over 40 minutes for a waitress to come to clear our plates, we were ignored by two different girls clearing glasses then when another came to clear our plates she picked them up and started to walk off, I stopped her and asked for the dessert menu, she grunted under her breath and then went away to whisper to a colleague. 5 minutes later she returned to inform us the kitchen had closed, I explained they had kept us waiting for over 40 minutes so this was not our problem. She did not apologise. We left immediately, my husband expressed our disappointment and was told our comments would be passed on. Why oh why did the numerous waitresses/glass collectors not just mention when clearing our table that the kitchen closed and we would need to order then. The problem appeared to be caused by uninformed staff who lack communication skills. We were planning to visit again in July with friends for a birthday celebration but this is now not happening, we have also stayed at Pen y Dyffrn to celebrate a 90th birthday and 30th wedding anniversary but would think twice now. With so many hotels, restaurants and pubs struggling or clising down I would expect excellent customer service to be priority at the current time.

We chose the Castle Hotel for a meal on a whim as we were in the area - so glad we did. The hotel restaurant was traditional in a comforting sense with wood panelled walls. The people working there are really friendly, attentive without being overbearing and seemed genuinely interested in whether you were enjoying your meal. One of us had the beef, the other had pork - both with season veg and yorkshire pudding. Both meals were wholesome and delicious. We both gad sticky toffee pudding for dessert which was also delicious - sticky but not claggy and very flavoursome. The cost at about £50 for 2 x two full courses and a couple of beers was very reasonable. If we are in the area again I would definitely eat there again. We ate in the dining room - there are other parts of the hotel to eat at, but for us the dining room or the bar looked like they had best character.

I’ve eaten here a few times over the years. When the weather is fine, it’s lovely to eat in the beer garden. The food is good and the service acceptable. However, since my last visit the policy has changed - drinks orders cannot be made at the table. Diners have to leave their meals and queue at the bar. This disrupts the meal.

Despite other comments about the excellent food, I beg to differ. My experience of eating at the Castle Hotel recently wasn't that good. Avoid the fish pie. If they didn't call it 'fish' pie, you wouldn't have a clue what it was. £16.95 for a bit of poor quality and tasteless fish with a load of mash and pastry. I was robbed! That's why I'm writing this review. To be fair to the Castle Hotel, it does have some lovely gardens with great views, the staff are friendly and professional and it is dog friendly. I have stopped off for a drink on a few occasions and enjoyed every visit. I have never stayed at the Castle Hotel. My review is purely for the standard and price of an evening meal I recently had.

Too many complicated dishes and strange combinations. Someone is trying too hard! Keep it simple especially at lunch time. A tarte tatin does not need to be piled high with tomatoes and a quiche should be tasty and not served with chutney. The bruschetta would embarrass an Italian. Whole garlic cloves and feta cheese?? Lower prices and simpler food would bring me back.

Family lunch in the garden: this restaurant does a superficially 'standard' menu exceptionally well. The homemade moussaka with Greek salad was exceptionally good - exactly the right amount of cinnamon to be flavoursome without overwhelming. The batter on the hake (served with huge chips) was light and crisp, and the minted pea puree was really fresh. Knowledgeable waiting staff gave great advice on choosing beer. The wine bu the glass was also better than average. Attentive but not intrusive service. They've thought out their covid precautions which are proportionate and effective. And the views from the garden are outstanding!

Sitting and eating in their lovely garden on a sunny evening, looking out at the Shropshire country side - it doesn't get much better, and even if the food was rubbish they'd still be busy in the summer. It's far from rubbish, well cooked and with a range of options. Vegetarians aren't forgotten, and the Castle Hotel has the decency to make them less expensive than the omnivore courses. Not everyone does. There's a good range of local beers, and some fancy gin concoctions as well as everything else you'd expect from a pub. The staff looked after us well. The only downside was the portions could be a little larger. If you're expecting a belly busting pub meal you'll be disappointed by the amount, but pleased with the quality.

The Hotel is set in beautiful surroundings and the day l arrived the weather was warm and sunny, perfect for sitting in the large garden to eat. I ordered the breast of chicken on a bed of Bombay potatoes with fresh vegetables priced at £15.95. The meal arrived, l had one sliced carrot, 4 mange tout, less than half a potato of tiny Bombay potatoes and 2 small pieces of chicken. Only complaining to the waitress l was given a grunt whilst the manager insisted it was a full size chicken fillet!! I was not offered any money off my meal nor a free drink or dessert in fact the way my complaint was handled was dreadful, it was very obvious neither manager of waitress was bothered. A very disappointing meal and host for what l had hoped would be a lovely meal out On a lovely summer evening. A Restaurant definitely trying to be something it most definitely isn’t!

Really disappointed with having to write a less than positive review as this is a beautiful venue with lots of lovely areas in which to dine; multiple garden areas. Cosy but not claustrophobic bar areas and a panelled dining room. Service friendly and informal. However. There the relentlessly good news stops. Almost £30 for an 8 Oz steak is pretty steep, although my husband did say it was tender and tasty. He did also say 'could this BE any smaller?' Accompaniments were also not generous and not exciting. A single onion ring..half a bog standard large watery supermarket bargain tomato and the ubiquitous plate filler so beloved of restaurants keen to up their profit margins, the pea shoot. The chips were very average, could have been any supermarket own brand. I would have expected triple cooked, well done generously cut chips for £4 a portion but no, this was a small cup of insipid, pale, nothingness in chipped form. I was excited about my belly pork with crackling and black pudding mash but the pork was fatty with lots of bits inedible, crackling somewhat crackly but much of it tough and inedible, and the mash was a dried out timbale with scant bits of black pudding; could have been great but wasn't. Desserts? After this dispiriting main course didn't bother. Oh and £7.50 for a mean thin slice of literally grey chicken liver parfait as a starter (more pea shoots) that's a joke. Such a shame. This eaterie can't decide whether it's doing pub grub well or being gourmand foodie. Attempting to hit both markets it's missing both. Breakfast is good though if you're staying in the hotel. Hope it sorts out its identity crisis soon. I realise it has to charge high prices as can't squeeze too many people in but only the location is saving it.

Had a lovely Saturday lunch here whilst visiting Bishop's Castle for the day. Ate in the garden on an extremely warm sunny day. I had the gluten free vegetarian tart( of which I'm neither) and it was absolutely delicious.

Made a last minute booking to stay here while travelling through. Stayed in the cottage across the road which was perfect. Wish we were staying longer. We had a very relaxing dinner in the garden. Breakfast was delicious too. Staff friendly. Will stay here again if travelling through back for a ferry crossing home.

My husband and I visited this Pub for dinner while on holidays from Australia, and staying in Acton. We were very disappointed with our meals and the service. We ordered what was supposed to be their home made bread for a starter. It was dry, cold and tasteless. We asked politely if the waiter could perhaps warm it, which he was happy to do. Howevet, it must have gone around the turntable in the microwave for about 5 minutes . It was overheated, soggy and just awful. My main meal aas the fish which was served with a creamy pesto sauce. It was totaly tasteless. My husband had a burger, overloaded which I think they were proud of doing. It was also tasteless. The main factor was that it was very expensive and so disappointing.

Booked Afternoon Tea here as part of my sister's hen weekend and I have to say it was not as good as reviews led me to believe. The staff were polite but not very attentive and our Afternoon Tea did not look like ones in the photos on here in terms of presentation or content. The sandwiches were ok but the strong mustard and pickle flavours were a little overpowering for some of our tastes. Whilst the desserts were generally well received, the scones were our main issue - strong in cinnamon flavour, no plain option available, some were dry, a couple seemed under baked... and no alternative to the dry, sweet blackcurrant jam when requested was also disappointing. Additionally, there were no alternative choices of tea flavours, which seems to be standard practice in the many many Afternoon Teas that we have had in other places.

Me and my little son stopped off for some light lunch and a lovely pint of ale. The setting is perfect with stunning views of the town and surrounding countryside. The food is always amazing and beer is quality with a good selection. The staff are extremely helpful and make you feel very welcome.

We had heard the The Castle was good for Sunday, but it was not great. It's a nice old building and the garden is pleasant, but the food, service and atmosphere, left a lot to be desired. There are much better pubs in the Shropshire countryside for Sunday lunch.

Renown for its generous serving sizes, we were a bit disappointed by the new fish and chips portion size although their gluten-free batter is still excellent. It's now £15 for hake which was 1/3 of the size of the previous option, with chips carefully portion-controlled in a pot, too. We requested both our starters with the gluten- free bread... normal diners get mini loaves, we got both a prawn cocktail and a pate served with one sliced of warm/floppy ( been microwaved) bread.... so unfortunate to get both crusts out of the Genius packet loaf too. Disappointed by the presentation ( the pate portion is now the size of a boiled egg) I asked if the chef had changed but was advised we were enjoying the new 'upscaled' menu... more expensive, less of it, and if you're gluten-free you can feel very unloved when you're served both crusts from the same loaf. Needless to say the kitchen managed to rectify things when I suggested pate was best served with toast and prawn cocktail with cold bread... we then got two rounds of toast with the new, upscaled, much smaller pate portion and one round of still defrosting white bread with the prawns. Given the constantly creeping price rises at this establishment, if you're not drinking its worth the 8 minute drive down the road to the AA Rosette place ( only £21 for their rib eye steak) .. a much smaller menu but far better value for money when you compare the quality of food delivered and that the portion sizes have now aligned themselves to keep us all in trim after the excesses of the last holiday season.

Lovely cream tea eaten in a large garden which we suspect is very busy in the summer! Jam was delicious just a small shame it wasn't clotted cream, but a small blemish.
