The Castle Bar in Cambridge

I am reviewing the rooms above the bar as I stayed here to visit Cambridge. Very convenient for visiting the center. Rooms not very large, quite clean, to enter you have to enter a code twice, shared bathrooms new and reasonably clean.

I was going to meet my friend in the bar. I was OK:d by the first door lady, but another man of security announced out of the blue that I was not to go in, “not the correct crowd”. I tried to enquire more details and I got very vague answers. Rude, random. Maybe racist or homophobic discrimination. Please avoid.

A truly awful place where we didn’t even get a chance to order a drink. Before even sitting down got told we were not welcome at all. This was in the early evening when there was at maximum 4 other people in the bar.

Great space, great environment, great service. Friendly helpful staff serving drinks and snacks. A good space for an event

Talk about being basic, we got 2 beds and a TV for 3 nights, had to ask for a kettle and we were given a kettle and a few tea bags, no cups or milk luckily there was a charity shop close by to buy some cups, no drawers or wardrobe so couldn't hang our clothes up x

Dress code in force and door staff will enforce it. It's a good venue for grown ups.

Supposed to serve cocktails but barman could only mix two or three....ended up having a Guinness!

Really homely with spacious accommodation and comfy beds. Great options for a three-person room at a reasonable price. Access was good even after the bar closed, and the staff were helpful about the split check-in. I liked the waste-free toiletries dispensers in the bathroom too —- very practical.

unsuitable It is a bar and they added rooms to it, and it only opens when the bar is opened. It is not suitable for a normal person For your information, I booked 5 nights there through booking and did not stay in it for a night and they refused to refund the amount. I am still in contact with the hotel, hoping they will return the amount

Spacious place with high tables ideal for drinks and snacks in the center of Cambridge. There is no menu but the staff offers you the dishes of the day (variety of savory cakes and hamburgers). Friendly service. It is also the venue for the annual Pint of Science talks.

Great pub, moderate prices, possibilities to charge electronic devices, the guests and the personnel are extremely friendly and helpful as well

One glass of wine. Out of nowhere they told me I was too drunk and swearing at the manger so i couldn't get in 🤣 i didnt speak to her after she got me frogmarched out. One bouncer reasonable and apologetic, one very aggressive.

Lacking in friendly staff and atmosphere

They had pinot, great, tryed 2 others before them, no pinot,lovely peaceful, could talk, would definitely go there again for a drink, don't no weather they do food or not,

Went for a few drinks with some colleagues and the staff at this venue were welcoming and just incredible throughout. Thank you for a great evening

Went for some drinks on a Saturday night with some friends. One in, one out policy (understandable in the current climate) meant the queue was around 20 minutes. Friendly door staff apart from the lady taking payment to get in - it felt like everyone in her bar was a massive inconvenience to her. When inside, good music and a reasonable enough atmosphere (although it’s not really set up to be a dancing venue). Pretty expensive drinks but to be expected on a Saturday night. All in all, wouldn’t rush back.

Some of the staff are very rude the gentleman at the bar was unhelpful and wouldn’t serve us despite their ‘QR’ code not working will not visit again a real downer on my birthday celebrations

This is easily the best bar I've been to in Cambridge! The staff were extremely friendly and there's a great vibe about the place, the music is good and there's a good selection of drinks. Definitely a great place to go to on a Friday/Saturday night!

Great mature atmosphere in a small, but convenient location. Great place to pop in with your date or mates for a drink and a lime The bartender makes wonderful cocktails.

Came in for a drink tonight and had a great time! The atmosphere is brilliant and the staff are some of the best in the city. A wholehearted recommendation

Pretty poor old fashioned. Using very cheap whisky in their premium cocktails

One of the best bar, to enjoy good music

Nice bar but I’ve been sat staring at the bar staff for the past 20 minutes attempting to get a drink. Apparently if you’re a group of loud lads who go round snogging other people on different tables (despite current social distancing guidelines) you get served more. Not entirely sure why only one person can take the orders but there’s four people behind the bar and another who I’m not quite sure what they’re doing. But can’t take orders.

First pint on the 4th of July. The organisation of social distancing was excellent and the staff were so professional and knew exactly what to do. Great job - especially the man with the blonde hair on the door!

Nice looking bar in but never busy until late at night.

Grumpiest staff, no one in there, slow service. Do yourself a favour and go to Spoons. PS barmaids all look like bushpigs too 🐷

The hotel room is nice and warm and the bathroom was clean upon arrival.

Tad expensive compared to the Regal/Weatherspoon's next door. It is still a nice place to visit

Love it in here, music fun, clean place, drinks a little pricey but that's just the way it is in town centres these days. It doesn't get busy until around midnight but then it can get packed.

Beer is expensive .No food .Staff only interested in themselves .No fixed opening hours so can serve you a Drink and 2 minutes later the door staff are ushering you out .Will not use this place again.

Not allowed to stay despite being (and looking) 29 (i.e. 11 years over the drinking age) because 'it was a Saturday' Note it was actually Friday.

Called in here for a pre dinner drink mid week, nice place, good beers and friendly staff. I deal for the local resturants

I visited Castle bar with my daughter who was attending an interview in Cambridge University. The service we received was exceptionally good. The atmosphere and decor appealed to our taste. its central location enabled us to attend to our business and return to Castle bar without wasting time. Only draw back is lack of parking.

Didn’t realise that they served food, enjoyed a quality cheese and ham toastie, a fresh dressed salad and posh crisps, washed down with a expertly poured pint of Guinness - All for under a tenner!

Fantastic Place, attended a social here for Film Festival.

Wow! First, I went to buy a second drink and I left my prior drink in order to keep my table but when I got back I found that my older drink and my table were moved in order to create more space although it was only 7 pm and over half of the place was empty. Second, I went to the restrooms and left my drink to reserve the table and when I got back in 2 minutes I found that my drink was removed to the bar. Although the place has a nice atmosphere I think the management and staff should do much much better.

Decided to stop off for a quick drink while shopping in Cambridge. Location The bar is located on the main high street near to the Lion Yard shopping centre . Decoration Very modern, nice lighting and wooden funiture giving it a rustic feel. Music Nice modern backing soundtrack to have a drink too Service Given the time of the day we visited it wasn't over crowed so service was prompt

Popped in with my daughter whilst in Cambridge City Centre It's a lovely bar that is friendly and inviting It's spacious and light with pleasant decor We just had a glass of wine but will come again when next visiting the City

The bar is rather small but cosy with a very good vibe & music. Offering booths which also great if you in a bigger group. The drinks were priced very well despite the place seeming upmarket due to its interior design. I would recommend this place for a good drink.

After a bit of a disastrous experience we ended our night in Castle Bar, so glad we did! Great music and atmosphere, reasonable drinks and everyone in there was really enjoying themselves. As a point to note, not sure if its always the case, but when we went (Saturday) it was over 21s, and you have to have ID.

On Saturday 23 of June we tried to get in and we were discriminated by the guy at the door. My friend was not allowed to go in, we were not drunk or disturbing, or any other reason other than been discriminated. My friend was arriving to Cambridge to study and he got a very bad impression of the city because of this. I would say that the stuff or the manager have zero people skills

Very expensive, on the Saturday night we might as well have been trying to sleep downstairs at the bar it was so loud, this carried on until 3am. Rooms are basic and with one plug that we can use in the room. Having spent nearly £200 for our 2 night stay we were quite surprised that the bathroom was shared with all the other guests. It’s not a b&b it’s just a box room above a very loud and busy student bar. We have given it 2 stars because it was clean. Which really shouldn’t be reason for a star after you have spent nearly £200, it should be a given.

The staff were very accommodating to the 'Pint of Science' event that was held there.

Vile. Sticky carpets, people vomiting outside, loud music and screaming drunks until 3am. Deeply unpleasant manager with zero people skills. It's not a B&B, which it claims to be. It just has some very manky rooms with shared bathrooms above the bar. It's a shame that this was my first experience of Cambridge.

Stayed there recently with some friends fo a weekend. Bar is good Craic and lively with music until 3 am on weekends. Staff were also nice and helpful. The Accomodation was pretty average.

We came back to Cambridge for our MA graduation. This place was perfect. The noise did not bother us as we were all out until everything closed. It is above Weatherspoons, so if you do want to sleep before 4am I would pick somewhere else. Great location in town. Rooms were clean and bathrooms are nice, obviously until drunk people get their hands on them. You can’t blame the Castle for other people’s behaviour though. Would recommend for hen and stag does and MA graduations.

Katastrophaler Service, mit Frau und Tochter Bar betreten, ausser uns nur 4 andere Personen in der Bar. “Dame” hinter Tresen spielt gute 10 Minuten auf ihrem Handy rum, ohne uns nur eines Blickes zu würdigen... sind dann gegangen. Alle anderen Bars waren gut gefüllt, die Leute wissen warum...

Initially Lovely bar which soon changed into a nightmare as the night went on. Terrible security later in the evening. I would never visit the place again.

Better than the Wetherspoons next door, but that's not saying much.

I'm not entirely convinced that the premium spirit's are really that premium. The Grey Goose (and lemonade) I was served was very dubious, having an afterburn similar to much cheaper brand.

Staff were excellent, let down by having to serve everything in plastic cups. Expensive.

Stopped in for a beer as I must have walked past this place a dozen times and never really noticed it. Nice atmosphere, great beer, great selection of songs at a volume that lets you talk comfortably and really friendly owner and staff. Will def return on my next visit to this lovely City.

Asked to see ID for half a pint of Guinness and did not think the Indian voter ID card was “official” even though it’s accepted everywhere in Cambridge. Also I am over 5 years older than the drinking age. Manager said it looked like a fake ID. Terrible, never going back.

I particularly like the Tuesday club, so welcoming, although my friend pointed out, the Wednesday club was much better looking ....

Extremely comfortable beds, really friendly staff and close to local shops and eating establishments

Staff was friendly. The room is ok. It's loud during weekends which they advertise so you know in advance, I didn't have to sleep so it was ok. But I reckon it's even impossible to sleep with earplugs. If you do have to sleep don't stay there during weekends. Bathroom is a bit of a contorted way away but otherwise ok & everything was clean. It might not be for everyone, but for a certain type of folks it could fit the bill very well.

Good place to dance on easygoing music. Always a winner.

We have just stayed 1 night on this B&B in Cambridge. The room is big enough, so clean, with 2 big double windows to the street. It is very well situated, every important site's are so close around 5-10 minutes walking. Also the price is competitive in comparison with the average price per night of this city. We stay in a twin room with shared bath, everything OK. I recommend it!!

A really nice place with lovely food and friendly staff

Okay as far as a bar goes, but don't stay there unless your a party animal. The rooms were very basic and no ensuite. I wouldn't stay there again. Music lasted till 3am in the morning then all I could here was rabble on the streets afterwards.

If you stay there, please note that despite marketing as B&B, they do not serve breakfast there. The bar was quite deserted, so I usually wen't to Whetherspoon just next to it.

Went to go in here after having a few drinks in the previous bar, as a group of 9 people celebrating a friend's birthday only to get to the door to get told half of us weren't allowed in as we weren't there kind of people so I approached the owner of the place and asked what he meant by that considering he hasn't even spoke to any of us so just judged us on first impressions and he was very rude and just said we aren't his kind of people and our age we ranged between 19 and 25 and people the age of 18 were in there I feel they were rude and very judgemental and I wouldn't recommend to anybody

It was not good experience. Music really old and I asked to DJ a latina music or new one and he said latina music not and he was unpolited. Wouldn't came back just drunk people.

Worst B&B, NOT in my entire life I could ever imagine there are bar and dancing floor with loudest noise located in the B&B. Only reason I pay a place to stay, so I can get good rest. Even tho I was on top floor, the music just penetrated through the whole building. Only question, what on earth would people incorporate B&B and dancing club. But only 1 things I was quite glad is at least they do have a decent standard of hygiene. Room generally clean, not enough light in the room, shared bathroom also looks well managed. Definitely not a choice for stay!!!!! Especially when you have exam next day!!!!

Rude staff! Came in with a friend wanting to get some lunch and were told to order at the bar. When we had decided and went up to order we were told that they weren't ready to serve and would come over when they were ready. No wonder the place was almost empty on a Saturday afternoon. Stay away!

Comfy room and a warm welcome, but on a very noisy road - lorries, deliveries, shouting, loud music...

We visited with a small group of friends, for some reason the gibbon on the door refused us entry, despite wanting £5 each to get in! As he thought I had had enough to drink. As it happens I was the designated driver for the night so subsequently had only 4 cokes the whole evening!! A. I think it's taking the piss to charge to go into a bar where they apparently over charge you for drinks anyway & B he (the doorman) obviously has no idea what he was judging or doing!!! What a joke. DO NOT VISIT!!!

Excellent place to have a drink with friends

Great pub. Really good food, and very good service. The wings plate is huge. They count 2 pieces of chicken wings as one. Oh the joy! :)

When I've been moving in, ive asked (since it's a bar) if they're active at night time. They said they're closed after midnight. That is a load of lies. Midnight till 4am ridiculously loud music banging throught entire neighborhood. I thought thankfully I had ear plugs. That didn't help because vibration has literally been shaking whole place up. I've seen ceiling dust coming out when it has been banging loud music. Would there be an option to put zero stars, I'd do so. Never coming back to this ungodly awful place. And neither do I recommend picking hotels in at least two hundred radius away from it

Weekend security have attitude, are moody and are on some sort of power trip! All they are are low skilled beefcakes that just stand there like dummies on the door! I know this from more that one experience too! It's not hard to find much better places in Cambridge for a good night out! Over priced, overrated!

Lovely place with a great selection of beer, the food is very good as well.

We've just stayed at its B&B for two days. Although the route to guest rooms looks like a puzzle and the two shared washrooms are usually occupied, the location is very good and the staffs are friendly and helpful.

I have been going to the castle for years on a Friday or Saturday night because the old school music, eclectic crowd and friendly staff were so great.Ironically, since it had a little spruce up a while ago it seems to have gone downhill. The DJ, I think his name is Wayne, thinks he's the best DJ in the world, which he seriously isn't and has a major attitude problem. The castle hasn't got much going for it now the music is changing for the worse.The bouncers are often ridiculously strict, I've seen them refuse entry for no reason a number of times.There are still some super friendly staff, like the bouncer who likes a boogie and the man who takes your money.Please castle, get a DJ who cares about your clientele and can play the music everyone wants to hear! Wayne - if you don't like your job anymore, quit.

Had a nice evening there..good r'n'b music and atmosphere. That is until I came back from the bathroom later during the night to find the bouncer asking my boyfriend to leave because he was looking for me in the loo (he heard someone was being sick and thought he was me and just wanted to check on me). The guy could have been understanding, especially when he realised it wasn't me and I had been waiting downstairs. I asked for an explanation to the bouncer as I didn't understand the situation, but as he wasn't going to let him back in I went to grab our stuff in the cloakroom and left.

My friend and I only popped into The Castle Bar for a few glasses of wine after our shopping trip in Cambridge. Lovely little find. Nice and quiet, lovely decor and friendly bar staff. Very reasonably priced drinks too so overall very happy with our experience here. Would be happy to return.

Arrived just after 1pm on 28/11/15 - ordered at 1:10. 10 mins later, people at the next table were told 30 mins wait for food (I hadn't been told this). Another 20 mins later, no sign of food. People at the table on the other side were offered free drinks as an apology for lateness; I wasn't (possibly because I was dining alone?). After 25 mins, I was told "3 mins", after 35 mins "5 mins". Eventually got a very uninteresting burger and some decent chips - not worth waiting for though and overpriced for the quality. Won't be going back; can't recommend it.
