Only been once for breakfast and I must say it was lovely. Full English breakfast with a nice cup of tea. I could have had a beer, but I was off the races. Place is lovely and the staff were really friendly. I’ll definitely be going back at some point.

I’ve known The Castle Inn for most of my life. Over the years, it’s had its fair share of ups and downs—different owners, changes in atmosphere, and a long stretch where, to be honest, it lost a bit of its charm. For a while, I stopped coming altogether. But recently, under new ownership, something special has happened. The place has completely turned around. The food is genuinely impressive—fresh, well-cooked, and clearly made with care. You can tell there’s pride in the kitchen now. The hospitality has done a complete 180 too. The staff are warm, welcoming, and you really feel looked after the moment you step through the door. It finally feels like a proper pub again. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, the drinks are well-kept, and the whole place just has that “local gem” vibe it’s been missing for years. I’ve started coming back more regularly, and each visit just confirms that The Castle Inn is in great hands now. Whether you’re popping in for a pint, a Sunday roast, or a night out with friends, it’s absolutely worth it. Hats off to the new team—keep it up!

Met some friends at the Castle for breakfast last week, and didn’t disappoint. Had a traditional English breakfast, good quality food well cooked, happy to change some items. Friendly service, and nice friendly place. Coffee could be stronger but more of a personal preference.

Ideal for a tasty lunch and the menu, although not extensive, gives a good selection and allows for smaller portion sizes too. Service was excellent, and the small hiccough we had with a dessert mix-up was dealt with in the best and nicest possible way. That to me is what it's all about - anyone can make a mistake, it's how its responded too and resolved that matters and the staff could not have been more responsive. Kind and friendly, good food and on my doorstep.

An evening mid-week dinner visit, there is plenty of parking and the pub is very dog friendly. The staff are friendly and helpful. We ordered nachos to share, which were large portions and smothered in sauce, cheese and jalapeños. A classic of ham, egg and chips was the choice, which is hard to get wrong. The food was okay and I’d describe as standard pub grub, filling and not bad value.

Although it seemed short staff, nothing was too much trouble. annbelle and Lauren were polite, friendly, and welcoming, making sure they took the time to chat to us all . It's under new management and new main menu going live from next week. The dessert menu was live today, and the panckes were amazing. I look forward to sampling it all. Popped in on the off chance on 1/1/25 to get a breakfast. Wasn't sure if they did breakfast, but pleasantly surprised to find them open and doing a breakfast menu. We ordered a full English. It was actually nice to have to wait for it to be cooked, instead of something just being kept warm and thrown on a plate. The wait wasn't excessive, just enough time to enjoy a drink and a chat. All I can say is the breakfast was absolutely delicious. Everything seemed fresh and freshly cooked to order. No staff pestering all the time, but attentive enough to be helpful. Personally I will be back, our experience was fantastic. The only down side was the building was a little cold. But not cold enough to be uncomfortable. So not a major issue.

Went here with my sisters and partners and our Mum today for. Sunday roast. What an amazing experience. After many very average Sunday roasts in local establishments recently my expectations were very low. However this was the first roast that tasted like a home cooked roast. Despite booking a table online for 6.30 Friday evening, (you’d think they would then be aware that we would be eating) , we had to wait nearly an hour for our food. The waitress came and told us after about 20 mins there would be a wait but shouldn’t be too long. Well it was too long. Hardly anybody in the restaurant so not sure what the hold up was, but seen other reviews about the wait so must be recurring. The restaurant was FREEZING COLD, so waiting that amount of time made it unpleasant. No atmosphere in there. Lots of men drinking at the bar area, but the restaurant seemed to have second best treatment. Such a shame as the pie and veg was absolutely fantastic so was the fish, so hats off to the chef, but timings need to be organised better, and put the fire on!!

Admittedly, I worked here and left 5 years ago and do have a soft spot for this place. That being said, our visits since the redcat takeover 2 or so years ago were far from positive, and we then stayed away. We've visited 2 times since the recent owner change and whilst we couldn't eat on our first visit due to difficulties with the online booking system and the kitchen closed at 3, drinks on the patio with friends was a positive. Today was a refreshing positive change, there's still football on in the bar (which wasn't the case during my time there) and a fair number of surprisingly quiet patrons in that area that were no disruption at all. The restaurant experience was fantastic, good service from friendly staff, and all of us had a really good roast dinner, a portion that left room for desert but everything was cooked to perfection and we prefer a good amount of fantastic food rather than a mountain of 'meh'. The only slight negative is that it was fairly quiet at 1pm on a Sunday so the atmosphere wasn't quite the same as I remember it when working there, but if they carry on with the quality of the service and the food I would bet they will get very popular very quickly.

Met a friend here for lunch. It was really quiet we were seated quickly and our drink order was taken. We ordered our meal and waited a while only to be told 1 of the starters was not available. Not a problem I'll have soup instead. No soup. Oh well I'll have something else. We waited quite some time before our starters arrived. When our plates were cleared we were asked if we wanted anything else, bit worrying as we had ordered a main with our starter. A couple sitting close to us had ordered not long after us and we're still waiting. After chasing their lunch they were told what they had ordered was not available. Seriously if that was me I would not be happy. They changed their order and their food arrived quite soon after. Ours when it arrived was ok at best. Mine tasted like it had been hanging around for a while. We were not offered dessert, probably for the best. And had to find somebody to arrange to pay for our meal. Would I go back probably not.

The online menu was very impressive with many offerings, however upon arrival we were given an A4 sheet of paper with a very limited menu on it. We were informed that the soup starter was not available, which reduced the starters offering to just three, one of which was onion rings which I would consider to be a side order not a starter. From the mains options we were informed that there were no pies, no curry, and with the chilli they had no rice to go with it. All in all, an already small menu got even smaller. After completing our mains, we were not offered any desserts, so we assume there were none on offer, and we were not asked if we wanted coffee, we were just left. This is not the Castle that I remember and which made us return. We always try to support local businesses but this is one that we will not be going back to, or would recommend.

Me my partner and daughter went for breakfast at the castle this morning. Really wish we hadn’t, I had scrabbled eggs on toast, it was cold and definitely been microwaved in some sort of mold as it was all stuck together like a brick. Extremely rubbery and tasteless, worse scrabbled eggs I’ve ever had. The lady took it of the bill but somehow the bill still came to £27. We had two orange juices, big breakfast and an extra sausage and hash brown. I did query the price and looked at the receipt and the scrabbled eggs wasn’t on there. I’ve added it up and definitely still been charged which is disgraceful.

Then what appeared was a menu that did not match the website.(which you can understand slightly got my hackles up because we had both decided on what to have before we got there😢😢 I was then asked what drinks would I like which was very polite I asked for a bottle of Prosecco and they didn’t have any😂😂 Laughing on the inside was hurting,I knew the tears would start coming from my body so we got up and left. We had been to this pub in July and had an excellent meal, so we decided to take our friends here for lunch today. The menu was brought to the table by a very polite young girl who informed us that two items were not available, leaving an option of a choice of only five items. Unfortunately, after a long wait the meals arrived but were of poor standard & very disappointing, three fish & chips along with a Sheppard pie. We went to order our desserts after waiting a while, only to be told the only dessert they had was three flavours of ice cream. My friend had an allergy which I don't feel was taken too seriously, when we questioned the ingredients, the bottle was brought out first & when we were still wary, the manager said 'Do you want me to take a picture of the bottle for you?'. Rude & unprofessional. The young waitress told us that they had only just taken over the premises on 28th August. In my opinion, a business should not open until it is ready to be able to offer a good service. I really hope things will improve for you.

Never in my life have I ever walked into a restaurant to be completely ignored even when I was stood in front of the person at the counter. We had been visiting my partners very unwell Dad in the hospital and neither of us were up for cooking so I called The Castle to check that they were serving and I was told by the lady on the phone that they were serving until 7.30pm and how many of us were there. We walked in about 6.10pm and the man behind the bar just looked through us! I appreciate that the England game was on however quite frankly football is not everybody’s priority at the moment. After standing there being ignored I asked for a table for 2 to be told we are not serving until after the game, I explained that I had called half an hour earlier for his response to be well there are no tables! Which was quite frankly ridiculous as the empty restaurant was clearly obvious. Clearly football is more important than good manners and making a profit, also if your going to stop serving for the game make sure all of the staff have got the memo! I’ve eaten here several times before and have enjoyed the food however I will never step foot in this place again.

Our lunch today at The Castle was perfect in every way. Our waitress was both very helpful while unobtrusive. When I told her that our son is deaf and can find it hard to discriminate conversation when near to other people she showed us to a table in a quiet area. The menu is extensive. There is something for everyone and, in our case, several we would enjoy. As my husband and I are elderly our appetites have receded in recent times so we appreciate the small plate menu. Everything was beautifully cooked and presented. I asked for my sirloin steak to be medium rare. It was cooked to perfection and was tender and juicy. Thank you waitress and chef. Came for a Mother’s Day Sunday roast. I appreciate it’s a very busy day but the service was shocking. Firstly, hardly any items on the menu available. Only given 1hr 30 to have our meal, which with 3 courses is limited. Before all of us were finished eating our mains, our plates were taken from the table. Barely put the cutlery down before they were taken away, leaving one person awkwardly eating by themselves. The food was average in itself, charging a lot for a small portion of food. To top it off, we weren’t shown how much was entered on the card machine (we trusted them) and they added service charge without disclosing on the bill!! If you aren’t expecting to or wanting to pay service charge, make sure you check how much they are charging your card!!

We had to go ask them for service at our table on several occasions. The meal was lovely but needed to come to the table alot hotter than it did and the veg though very nice needed to be cooked Abit longer. Dessert was gorgeous. Being automatically charged a service charge after being left at the table for some time was a shock but we did the usual British thing and paid without question. Food has improved recently but service still needs looking into and food needs to be A LOT hotter than it was.

We were eventually asked if we’d ordered our meals, I explained that we hadn’t even managed to order a drink! 12 of us had a table booked at 3pm today. Everything ran smoothly, food was good, service was great, the staff were lovely. Couldn't fault it. Thank you

I booked a table for 7:30pm on a Saturday night. When we arrived we were only one of four tables which surprised me for a weekend. The chicken and leek pie was clearly bought in and was meant to come with garlic buttered kale. Instead it turned up with cabbage which I’m not a fan of and would have swapped had I know they didn’t have kale. My partner ordered the Buddha bowl which was disappointing from look through to taste. Literally just some ingredients chucked in a bowl with no effort or substance. However the most disappointing part of the evening was being told at 8:05, when we’d barely made a start on our main course, that the kitchen would be shutting soon so here were the menus for dessert. If they knew they didn’t have many bookings for the evening and would be shutting early, I should have been warned about this on the phone when I booked. If they made the decision last minute, the existing customers shouldn’t feel pressured to force a meal down quickly in order to be allowed to order dessert. The three other tables were also encouraged to order dessert soon so the kitchen could shut. Having been a chef for 15 years I can tell you most kitchens only shut once the existing customers have been served at their own pace. If you’re that quiet that you’re shutting the kitchen at 8pm on a Saturday night, you shouldn’t upsetting the customers who have actually turned up.

Pleasant enough arrival and waitress was very friendly, from then it went downhill. After ordering the waitress returned to tell us that one of the dishes was not available and then promptly reeled off about six or seven other dishes not available. This message she had to convey to several other guests arriving through the evening. I almost felt sorry for her. The menu is not that extensive so it’s a bit of a poor show. The two pies we had were nice enough, the kids meals were ok but my fish a chips was pretty terrible. I was going to get another round of drinks but we were never asked so we didn’t bother. For such a location in the village this place should be super busy on a Sunday early evening but it’s not, perhaps our story is the general malaise felt by the rest of the community.

Just had a lovely family lunch celebrating my birthday (21again🙄) Very warm welcome from the two ladies, explained the menu and took drink orders. As I was opening cards they also wished me a very happy birthday. At the end of the meal, which we all enjoyed, the two ladies appeared with a delicious slice of cheesecake complete with candle, iced ‘happy birthday’ greeting on the plate and then sang ‘happy birthday’! Completely unexpected but a lovely thoughtful gesture - well done ladies! Hadn’t been to the Castle for a while as after having new owners, standards and staff had slipped a bit, but I can honestly say after today, the staff, service and food couldn’t have been nicer. Thank you ladies for your thoughtfulness and your singing!!

From my first initial call to book our table, to sitting on the lovely patio with our drinks, the whole experience was memorable. The staff are brilliant, attentive, friendly and helpful. The food is excellent, well priced and plentiful. The manager and her team are very sociable and nothing was too much trouble. A real gem of a place.

I went to a family party and was not expecting to be able to eat any of the buffet as am coeliac. Family member mentioned this and a platter was brought out just for me which was absolutely delicious. Battered fish, onion rings, halloumi fries, chicken skewers and dip. Thank you so much to the ladies serving and also to the chef who cooked it up for me. I was amazed at how good it was. Thoroughly recommend this place.

Lovely hostess Cheryl. Very friendly cosy pub with oodles of character and a great atmosphere. We had a wonderful meal of fish and chips with accompaniments. Quaffable house wine too. Been before for the Sunday roast which was brilliant too. Hubby is gluten intolerant and the staff were very helpful and kind, with the chef assisting in the choices he could have. Highly recommend for dinner, but also a great place to stop for a drink and listen to the live music. It’s our new go-to place!

One of the worst meals I've had in a long time. I don't often write bad reviews and it's taken me a while to write this! Me, my friend and son, decided to get a late lunch/dinner here, as the end of August. It took quite some time for the food to come out. I ordered the standard size hunters chicken, she ordered the small plate... they couldn't really tell us when they brought out the plate if it was the small or the large, then they brought out the small and apart from, slightly more mash and a few extra peas, it was the same meal, you can see her plate in the background, completely full, while mine is spread out. So not only did I pay an extra £5, the food wasn't great, the chicken was so dry, I needed mayo, to help it down. We did tell the staff and she said the chef was new and would let them know (wasn't even apologetic about it) ... erm, hopefully things improve, as is a nice pub, with a nice veranda area and garden area. Food use to be decent and they use to offer wonderful cakes. Also as it was the kids holidays, kids were meant to eat free but cause it was a certain day of the week, they put that deal through instead and I ended up paying more. I questioned it and got told, they gave me the best deal but once I was away, I looked at the receipt and they hadn't, it had cost more. I couldn't be bothered with the agg of arguing over a couple of pound. The whole thing was not a positive experience and neither of us are on a hurry to return.

Was recommended by a friend to come and try this place for food, and I cannot say I was disappointed. The food was amazing, well served and good sized portions. The staff were very friendly upon arrival, and maintained very amiable throughout. The restaurant has a bar/pub the other side, and good sized seating areas outside. Everything you could look for in a pub/restaurant, 100% will be visiting again soon.

Decided to give the pub a go having seen some of the recent, positive reviews. We were so glad that we did. The food was lovely and the service outstanding. The new team are doing an amazing job and we will definitely be back.

We tried The Castle on Friday night and there was a nice atmosphere, not too quiet, not too noisy. As a party of 6, we all ordered different things from the menu and we all agreed that the food was great. Friendly staff and good service. Will definitely re-visit.

Found this pub looking for the witches stone which is outside this pub. Went for a massive walk and then has dinner. The legend behind this is a fascinating read. See previous reviews and was tentative. However I found service was good and attentive, a very well stocked bar, and the food was well presented and tasty. We all really enjoyed our visit and will return very soon. however

We stopped coming here due to the terrible service a few years ago but decided to give it a go again…. Service was even worse than before… the waitress actually forgot we were there and didn’t take our order… after over 20 mins we had to go and ask to place our order… suffice to say we won’t be back

As a customer that was always in shwings when they had a restaurant on new london rd, I’m so so so disappointed on the new location, service, and the standard of food. Me and my partner decided to have shwings because we hadnt had it since they shut the restaurant, we was very let down by the whole experience and definitely wont be returning which is really annoying as we enjoyed it so much at the restaurant. The food was served on paper plates/bowls, we got given wooden forks, and the quality of the food wasnt up to the standards we’ve previously experienced with shwings. The location is not great either as its a bar/club and frequently visted by the homeless which makes an unpleasant atmosphere while eating. This used to be a restaurant you could take the family or be with friends and would have a lovely meal, great experience every single time. Now I definitely wouldn’t recommend for anyone with children or even a meal with friends. Overall a very disappointing experience and so sad.

Was starving on our way back from our day trip. Stumbled on the globe pub. Was so pleased they were serving food at home 4pm on a Sunday. A roast dinner and pudding was £14.99. I didn't expect much at that price! Well it was really really tasty. Would most definatley recommend.

Such a shame, this pub used to be the perfect blend of country charm, eclectic atmosphere and buzz. Now it is a sorry reflection of its former self. The whole place has been redesigned nicely, not that it particularly needed it and the menu matches its sister restaurant in Little Waltham which has always been steady, however this place is consistently poor. I have returned twice in the hope that they might get it right after some early teething problems , but if anything it has gotten worse. At first the food seemed to be ok but the service dreadfully slow, staff standing about, hardly busy, yet plates remain on tables for 20 mins, drinks orders forgotten, our first meal took nearly 3 hours to complete. Today the pub was almost empty, food on the floors from previous sittings and almost zero attention from the staff. Such a shame as it is in a fabulous location, the positive reviews are either for the original owners or faked by the new. Go to one of the pubs in Stock instead! __________________________________ Follow up: had an email offering me £20 as an apology. I have said it is not about money and I have had 3 poor experiences there now. Said I would return when they had confirmed things have been improved and have not heard back 🤷🏼
