One of the best pubs in the UK without a doubt. Beer is in perfect condition, food and bar snacks are delicious, the staff are all friendly and knowledgeable, and I could sit here and watch the world go by over a pint for hours. (I've done just that for the last 3 days on the bounce.) Will 100% be back. What a great boozer.

Proper old fashioned pub. Good selection of hand pulled ales on tap. Well worth a visit. Didn't try the food, but there are some great smells coming from the kitchen!!

Went in here today supporting my low vision friend and we had the best old world chip butty I've ever had. Reminded me of my late nans fantastic beef dripping chips and Jake the bartender went out of his way for every customer that came in. Superb pub with proper local sourced food cooked to perfection. Homely and friendly atmosphere. Highly recommended!!

Amazing heritage pub serving fabulous cask ales and delicious gourmet snacks.

Dropped in a couple of times lately for a pint and the beer is excellent, the sausage rolls are amazing and the side rooms perfect for a chat. It deserves it's well earned reputation.

Stunning Grade II listed building with fab staff serving superb cask beers. The interior is gorgeous. Look especially at the room on the left and the one on the right beyond the bar, and sample the atmosphere in the tiny vault with its open fire.

My favourite pub in Macclesfield (and Mac has a few crackers). This one has friendly enthusiastic staff, always has 3 cask ales on the go... All in perfect temperature and condition, always a couple of local beers and one from further away. Add to this the, made on the premises dinner plate sized pork pies, served by the slice with piccalilli. Oh and somewhere that makes me look forward to cold winter nights... open fires, comfy, cosy, warm rooms, a perfect escape from the weather when you've done your chores in town. Thank you Sue Guildford for recently added photos. You can see it's a traditional place, no sports TV required thank you.

Amazing locally sourced food made from scratch in house including small plates, snacks , weekly specials and Sunday roasts, constant rotation of interesting casks and keg beers. Food and drink from smaller independent breweries and distilleries, brilliant atmosphere and clientele, dog friendly. Lovely staff and inspiring owner, best pub in Macclesfield! 🏰🍺🍴

Nice old pub with a few beers on cask

This was a trip down memory lane for me, as this was a pub I used to visit regularly many years ago when I lived in Macc. It's a very old pub, so full of character and stories to tell. Old wood, stone walls, stone flag stones, fireplaces and exposed bricks the place just wreaks of age and history, and holds the essence of endless good times. It will not disappoint. Food served but we just had drinks.

This is our 2nd visit to here. The barperson was extremely helpful and answered any questions we had. The hidden outside area was great as it was hot outside, but some of the area was shaded. Will try the food next time because it sounded nice

I come up to Macclesfield to visit my friend and I've always wanted to try here but for some reason we never have,we did today and I loved it,it's a super cute pub draped in history,the menu looked great,we only had a drink but we'll definitely go back for food,the lady behind the bar was lovely,if you haven't been in a would definitely recommend trying it.

Wonderful grade II listed pub originally built as houses in the 18th century before being converted in to a pub over 100 years ago. Was closed for about 7 years but the current owners have done a superb job. Small front bar and another bar further in and then more seating up a couple of steps. Several original fittings add to its traditional beauty and quirkiness. Excellent cask ales.

Do Monday lunchtimes get any better than a pint of RedWillow Feckless and a plate of delicious food? I don't think so 😊 The food & beer is consistently excellent here, the atmosphere good and the staff are friendly & helpful. Recommended 👍

I have been calling in to the Castle since it was reopened under its present management. Good beer, good food, friendly and efficient staff in an exceptional building. I'd advise any visitor to Macclesfield to visit. Nearly forgot, dog friendly with newspapers 🐶👍

1st time and won't be the last great little place for a drink with a huge choice of beers . Friendly atmosphere, open fire, staff great. Didn't eat this occasion but will on next visit

Love this pub, old and quirky. The candles instead of lights give this pub an authentic victorian feel. The staff seem friendly and helpful too.

Popular place & really quirky inside. Getting served can be tricky. But well worth it though- cocktails looked great & even for the non drinkers you can get a hot chocolate

Historic Old pub from Victorian times, so lots of nooks and crannies and loads of character. Great range of beers and craft ales. I didn't try the food but oh said its really good.

Not quite sure what’s going on with management and staff but the service has really slipped during recent months - not the same amazing service and friendly staff as earlier in the year. I ordered a pint of cider and was given a goblet of Aspall with over an inch of foam on top. I asked the barmaid if she could top it up and she discourteously replied “that’s how it comes” and giving no other explanation. As far as I know Aspall cider isn’t supposed to have a head that looks a Mr. Whippy on it.

Stumbled across the castle. So glad I did. Great atmosphere and love the way it has 4 levels. They really know how to make a lovely "Dark and Stormy " as well. 👍🧉

Great little suntrap beer garden up steps at the back. Also covered smoking area on lower terrace. (Ladies) toilets very clean. Food- unfortunately the rarebit was burnt and, I thought, was a wee bit pricey.Really cosy little place . Met some nice mellow people there.

If you only come here to drink you’re missing out on the food. Excellent snacks to go with drinks and you can order 1 nibble or a full meal. Thumbs up for trying to serve some interesting food with drinks. Only thing I’d like is 1 or 2 more beers to select from.

A decently sized pub with a small selection of both good keg and cask beers, outside and inside seating with some comfy couches to relax in.

When George Orwell wrote about The Moon Under Water, his perfect but fictional pub, he probably did so without ever having visited The Castle in Macclesfield. If he had done, he could simply have recommended readers to come here. It’s about as historic as a pub gets, with three small cosy rooms and a larger one at the back. It has a modern ethos with a small plates menu that caters for veggies, vegans and those like me that enjoy black pudding. There is also tea and coffee for the secular drinker that doesn’t want to try any of the three tasty cask ales that are available. Bizarrely, this pub isn’t on the list of some of the Macclesfield pub guides that I found on the internet. It’s a hidden gem down the backstreets of the town centre but very close to the train station. Every visit to Macclesfield should include a visit to this pub.

Lovely pub, great ambiance and the staff are so welcoming and friendly. The beer and food is top notch and they have plenty of board games to keep you busy.

Cosy little candlelit pub nestled in the middle of Macclesfield - friendly staff and clientele, always at least one secret gluten free option (ask the staff) on the taps and very often more than one.

If you didn't know where it was you might struggle to find this pub. Persevere and you're in for a great pint and bijou cozy atmosphere. As such, it gets busy quickly.

the castle was closed for some years and reopened about two years ago, it is very well kept as it was and on a saturday night it was full of locals it is a five minute walk from Macclesfield train station
