Had booked for 4 people last night Saturday 2nd Nov. We turned up at 7pm. And there was no one there, the door was open the place was a disarray. Table cloths screwed up on one table wine glasses everywhere. No staff. We walked around , called out ..... no one....So we sat down as we had brought our own wine. Took glasses from behind the bar drank the wine, hoping that someone would turn up. But no. So we got a cab to epping to have a meal instead. It was so strange. Why take a booking if you are not going to be there.

Excellent food: few courses to guarantee freshness and quality. A chat, a good glass of wine and you return home with flour milled on site. Places like this are, unfortunately, increasingly rare. A place that warms and is good for the heart.

After calling the restaurant to confirm the full menu was available we arrived slightly bemused to find there was only a limited choice of meat on the menu and no venison. My partner and I ordered cocktails. My partner had a martini which was just a rather large gin which he couldn't drink. Starters was prawns and scallops. We got three each. No bread to accompany either. Portions were far to small. Given the £8.00 charge.. Tommohawk steak to share with the one portion of chips and a vine of tomatoes for £65 which was way overpriced for what we got.Rhubarn and apple crumple was rhubarb with a crumb. Sprinkled on the top. Summed up a night of complete dissapoitment. I would not go back here and do not recommend anyone going there unless they have money to burn.

Wow what a shambles. Dining in a poly tunnel is definitely a first, then the limited menu of one fish one pizza and one steak. Ok lets go with it but I expect a brill meal for £8.50 scallops (2) and £26 small monk fish in batter!!. Not cheap. V average. Waitress was in a dream, forgot cultery on the three table I saw, sauces late to tables, meals not served together. They only had 14 covers and she said they were busy! Manager pleasant enough. Gawd knows where these reviews were from?? Wont be returning.

Owner very personable but that’s it! Table set in a poly tunnel, no heating. Food very expensive, 5 choices, 2(of 3) steaks not available. Waited 45 minutes for starter, dippy waitress didn’t bring cutlery, had to hunt around 10 minutes for it. Noted exactly same on other tables, one waited 15 minutes for their steak sauce. Told by regular it was rough and ready?? 2 scallops for £8.50 isn’t rough and ready prices!! Steak was going to be another 30 minutes so we left, others around us were complaining of similar delays and were contemplating same. I can only question whoever gave this place 5 stars??

I had been to the Cart Shed two years ago and when my sister-in-law decided to get married last minute after lockdown I recommended it to her.I was so happy I did as it was perfect for a wedding reception with the current 15 people limit. They let her decorate it in advance and have the whole place to ourselves all afternoon and evening. It was just the right size for the amount of people and so lovely we could have it to ourselves. The food was amazing and Isobel, Rachael and the chef catered to every guests’ need. I couldn’t recommend this place more highly for a wedding reception in the current climate. 15 was just right, anymore and it would have felt too cramped. There was even room to dance. Thanks again for a really special evening.

We booked this on the basis of reading all the reviews across Epping facebook groups and was honestly looking so forward having seen some images of the outside dinning and the “smoke house menu” sadly This wasn’t the case.1. We turnt up to a completely empty restaurant (Saturday night)2. Wasn’t offered a drinks menu, they stock 1 bottle beer and we waited about 15 minutes whilst the lad serving us tried to find a bottle of wine.3. No music or atmosphere just the sheer silence of an empty restaurant and we could just hear the chef chatting away about his personal life4. Asked about the smoke house menu and we was given the al la carte which was completely different and had nothing of what we had seen on it.5.Ordered pigeon for starter, really tough and bland6. Didn’t have any sharing steaks so went for fillet. Had to send back as it was cold and way too rare for what I ordered.7. 2 more tables joined later on but what was infuriating was that one table was relatives of a staff member and just had the owner and another random guy sitting around drinking, talking (even swearing) just not comfortable dining.Overall we are well and truly disappointed. To pay £100 for poor food, in basically a rich mans shed is just not on. We could have gone miller and carter, had twice the amount of food for half the price and had a better night.

have heard about the cartshed from people and had mixed reviews .since covid you can only dine outside .booked for a saturday night hoping the weather was going to be ok .tables are under a gazebo and each table had a firepit by it in case it got chilli later on .firepit was a must later on as it got a bit cold and was also offered blankets .food all cooked on a smoke house which gives it that extra flavor .all the staff were very friendly and couldn't help enough .had starters and main course which was lovely and well cooked .cocktails were lovely especially the mojito .one small little thing was they only sold one brand of beer which was peroni .apart from that we had a great evening and have been back since .will go back next year if they do the outside dining again .

Very disappointed. We had heard great things about the restaurant, but we weren’t made aware on booking that you are now expected to sit outside - not ideal on a September Saturday evening at 8.30pm! The staff were brilliant. When we explained we were cold on the table outside, we were invited into the actual restaurant - which was empty, and currently being used as a store room for various furniture, bed sheets and a general wash room. The food, wasn’t great - incredibly salty. Not what we know of smoked food - and a bill of nearly £200 didn’t seem to equate to some very overcooked venison, pink chicken, and fatty beef. MI hope the venue sorts itself out. You can’t charge £28 for a fillet of sea bass and serve it on a chipped enamel plate?

What a little gem. Our first visit earlier today we really didn’t know what to expect. On arrival behind an existing period brick wall lay The Cart Shed. Very low key signage, however once inside the gate, all becomes very clear.Wooden bench seating all under Gazebos all with lighting under plus your own individual fire pit in the event you feel chilly. The Kitchen is very original with three large Smokers, apparently three of only five in the UK. All food is locally sourced andIs absolutely delicious, all of which is cooked on the Smokers. We ordered the Rib of Beef for two and quite frankly enough meet to feed four let along the two of us. All served with a selection of home made salads, new potatoes, baked cherry tomatoes along with mustard and jus.Without doubt a great find and credit to the Chef who knew his stuff and is really friendly and proud of what he dishes up to their visitors.Apparently they have live music, mainly acoustic which I believe will be once a month starting next weekend August Bank Holiday. Will definitely be going back, highly recommended.

If I could give this restaurant no stars I would. I’d have liked to have written a review about the food but sadly no food ever arrived. Having seen and read the very positive reviews we booked for our wedding anniversary. Baby sitters booked, children sorted we set off excitedly to the restaurant. My wife had messaged a day or two before as she’d seen that it was Burns night to ensure that the normal Grill Menu was going to be available. A text back confirmed that whilst new additions to the menu were being severed many of the normal menu was available. We were seated and given menus. The grill menu didn’t appear and we’d chosen the Cart Shed as we wanted to experience the Sharing Sirloin together for our anniversary. I spoke to the waiting staff and it was confirmed that indeed the Sirloin on the Bone sharing steak was available. The steak is advertised as average weight of 30-50oz and seeing other diners eating looked huge, so we opted for that only and was looking forward to the cheese board for dessert. When the order was taken, the waitress explained that the kitchen was a little behind and to expect a 40 minute wait. After an hour the manager came to the table to explain that if we wanted the Meal that we’d ordered it would be at least another 45 minutes to an hour wait or the chef would cook two ordinary steaks and that would be 25 minutes. Miller and Carter is two miles away, if we’d have wanted ordinary we could have gone there. It was explained that the chef had lost the ‘ticket’ which I assume means he forgot to cook our meal. So after an hour and half wait and no food, we have arrived home, on our special night out and my wife is currently eating a toasted cheese sandwich. Thanks for absolutely nothing Cart Shed. We put our trust in you to help us celebrate and you let us down completely. The food looked very good, it’s just a shame that we never got to experience it. Based on this experience it is impossible to make any other recommendation that to avoid it. They couldn’t have given a toss about our ruined evening. A suggestion maybe, if you’re going to go off menu for haggis, maybe don’t tell your guests that you’re able to cope with the normal menu, you’ve just categorically proven that you cannot. Very disappointed and frankly there is no excuse for a chef of the experience quoted on the website.

Great concept - mainly game & steaks. Food fresh, game shot by the owner. Cooked on an open wood fire. Lovely smells & perfectly cooked. Let down by problematic service and very very cold restaurant (we all kept our top coats on throughout the meal). Not helped by cold plates. Young waitress who left the main doors open each time she went outside. several patrons got up & closed them on a couple of occasions.. Gins never the same twice, depending on who served you. The haunch of Munjac however was perfect. Good wine at reasonable prices. Limited choices but that is not a problem. Do not expect a fine dining experience. Quirky but strangely good. Just had lunch her for my husbands 50th, party of five. Chips were fabulous. Steaks, pigeon, partridge and venison all very good, scallops lukewarm. Generally really good but there was a large party there and we were feeling like we got the left overs from start to finish. Two of the three steak mains were sold out, no goose, ok fine but then it was dessert - basically “we have two crumbles and some cheese” left. Wow! This just didn’t feel like a special occasion at at all - although at nearly £200 (no alcohol) it certainly felt like we’d paid for one. Considering they are apparently open til 10pm tonight I really didn’t realise we would be mopping up weekend leftovers at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon. It’s put me off going back as they weren’t even apologetic that it had all gone a bit wrong for us and seemed oblivious to this. I understand the food industry and overheads and why these things happen so no hard feelings, good they’re avoiding waste but for me it’s a no. And definitely not for a special occasion when you’ve pushed the boat out to afford something a bit better than an average Sunday lunch out.

In the shadow of the quirky mansion is the Cart Shad. I arrived as the first of our party and was warmly welcomed. The Cart Shed only seats around 26 and has a very intimate and warm atmosphere. The menu is small but carefully chosen. I chose the saddle of venison with roast vegetables and my friends had scallops to start and duck for main. We spoke to one of the Chefs before we ordered and asked him how generous the portions were. He said that they aimed to feed people not decorate plates. He was absolutely right. The portions were more than adequate. The venison was tender, perfectly cooked and delicious THe roast vegetables, including gorgeous roast beetroot was yummy. Very Quirky and personal as large open plan room (The Old Cart Shed) with the chef at the end preparing your food on an open fire pit. William the owner is excellent and walks around chatting to all the guests, talking passionately about the menu and his small holding at the rear. We were made very welcome and well looked after. A very enjoyable evening out. Thank you to William and his staff especially his Mum who took the time to talk to my sisters and I about the area when we were children. 🤗

This is a small restaurant that serves amazing food. Each mouthful was a taste explosion and a delight. It’s been a long time since I enjoyed a meal out as much as I did here. Personal attention from the owner, great food and a relaxed atmosphere make the Cart Shed well worth a visit

We were slightly confused when we got to the restaurant because it doesn't look like a typical restaurant. It is in a residential area and on the grounds of a farm. However the food was to die for, from the starter all the way to the dessert (puddle pudding). It's not cheap but it is fairly priced. We will be back.

Quirky place to eat if you like the chef cooking in the restaurant and serving. Interesting evening only 1 other couple so menu had been reduced. We enjoyed the food it was excellent, local shot venison and steak cooked on a fire pit. The chef/owner very knowledgeable and took time to chat to us. Friendly service. Will definitely go back

We were sat outside as we were told that inside was far too hot. We were next to a very dirty aviary and there was a very strong smell of urine.

Great little quirky restaurant set on a farm. All food comes from the farm and land including the game. The best steak I have ever had and I’ve been pretty much everywhere! Sensational cocktails and wine available as well. Definitely a little nugget!

2nd visit- even better than first. Super mussel starter - great serving and tasty sauce. Grilled mackerel with lemon and tomato relish - great combo. Nothing can beat the triple cooked chips !! Such a different restaurant- like being at home with your own chef. Love it.

Our second visit to The Cart Shed and this time it was for our 25th wedding anniversary. We had 17 guests for the evening and it was amazing. William is a fantastic cook and his staff are brilliant. We had exclusive use of the venue and nothing was too much trouble for William, he let us put up banners, table decorations etc. The food was sublime, cooked to perfection, with very hearty portions. Most guests had either the lamb or the steak and all of them commented on the quality and quantity.

This is an utter gastronomic gem tucked away down a residential road. The food is superior to many of the top draw London restaurants. Watching the chef creating these wonderful meals in close proximity with a glass of wine in his hand is a joy. By far the best restaurant in the area by a very long shot.

After reading all the reviews we went for Easter Sunday and have to say got a really shock. We eat out a lot in london and rarely seen such expensive main courses outside of michelin starred restaurants £22-£24 for a main course!!! However, we stayed as we thought the food must be amazing. The starters of scallops were quite cold but we thought that may be how they serve them but then the mains came out and they were not much hotter - the chips were cold. When we sent them back they recooked the ones we sent back so they came out burnt!! Mains were ok - just! Then the extractor didn't seem to work so we were in a room full of smoke!

I am really not at all sure about this restaurant. I had read the reviews and understood that it was really just about the quality of the food, particularly the game.

A party of 10 went there last Sunday for my 80th birthday. Without a doubt the best steak and chips I have ever tasted. Service was good and surroundings unusual. Everyone happy with their food. William very attentive. Can't wait to go again. Must ask William how he gets the chips so crispy on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside.

Quirky (in a good way) restaurant, certainly off the beaten track. Hospitality very good. Sardines to start, lovely. Venison main course - beautiful. Apple crumble, tart and sweet to perfection. Everything cooked to order. Please make the signs bigger on the gates!

If people start to go to this gem of a place, it might be full whenever I want to go. It is by far the loveliest food, comfortable atmosphere and a genius of a chef. I took a chance and tried pheasant ravioli and was knocked out with the taste. The steak needed no sauce as the flavour was full and rich. Triple cooked chips and a fine cheese board with the superb wine was a joyous meal
