A quaint village feeling pub just on the outskirts of Harlow set in a void between Nazeing. Sunday roasts are very good, fresh and plentiful. During summer there is a large sun drenched garden and beers are very reasonably priced. Highly recommended for a pitstop, or just to escape the towns either side.

This was the first time my husband and I had eaten in this pub. We had the Sunday roast as we were recommended by a friend to try it. Well, so glad we did,it was delicious. We chose beef and pork and the meat was succulent and the portions were very generous, lots of slices of meat! Roast potatoes and vegetables were very tasty too. We will definitely be going back! Staff were very lovely and helpful.

We had a great lunch here, The Black Swan is the perfect place to spend your afternoon. The choice of lunchtime food is very good and some available on large or small plates so if you are on a diet you can opt for a small plate but be warned they are still very good portions. We opted for garlic mushrooms and then Turkey and leek pie with mashed potatoes, carrots and peas on a small plate which was well cooked and well presented however we both were unable to finish. Unfortunately when presented with a very tempting sweat board we were simply unable participate so when we will revisit we will skip the starters. Ample free parking, lovely atmosphere, great friendly service. Just a few minutes from Harlow well worth a visit, but check on their website for opening times and forthcoming Afternoon Teas.

The Lamb roast tasted as though the meat was processed pre-packed rather than freshly roasted, the roast potatoes were burnt and the vegetables were overcooked. The other 5 in my party were happy with their meals of cod & chips, tuna baguette, fish fingers & chips and pate`& chips.

We pre-booked having warned the pub that one person in our party had a severe allergy to dogs (requiring on-going hospital treatment) - and we were assured by the "landlady" when we booked that whilst they did allow dogs into the restaurant, there were no such bookings on the day...........so no problem - except that the "landlord" deliberately brought his dog through to "introduce" him to us !!!!! Unbelievable, what planet does he live on ? So, whilst the food was very good, there is no way that we will be returning

I had the pleasure of attending The Black Swan in Nazeing for their Halloween Party last Friday. While I didn't have the opportunity to try their food, I found the pub to be a cozy and inviting place. The quick and friendly service was a definite plus, making it an enjoyable experience overall. Attended here for Triple X the other weekend, the first time at this pub, and LAST. Arrived sitting outside and asked about food and menus, it seemed a chore and odd to have to collect your own food after being called on a tannoy, however not ideal when people from our party go into the pub and hear us being slagged off for not bringing the menus back inside. Staff attitude HIGH and customer service LOW. Would have given a zero for service if it wasn’t for the lovely lady with a full fringe. Would advise not going here if you want to pay via card as this is a super inconvenience for the staff having to move outside the bar to get signal…not sure this is the customers fault. Friends arriving later with 4 children asked for food outside (bearing in mind a band is playing outdoors and it was 30°) they were told no food orders outside now but then whilst sitting outside people were coming out with food. Friends went back to ask for portion of chips for their children and again told kitchen not serving. Accepting this we could not believe it when people are then getting meals outside!!!!! Why are your staff lying and not allowing children to eat something. Pub also ran out of stock and ice, not ideal! Would not return here when 14 people in just our group are spending 7 hours of the day putting money into the till.

A lovely genuinely old pub. Food and welcome was good, with a nice relaxed friendly atmosphere. It got a bit cold in there in February with no heating. We were given a table by the toilets and staff door which was drafty and smelled of air freshener. It was better when we moved, but there were enough tables, I'd rather have been offered a more pleasant choice to start with. The food was very enjoyable; I had a small plate of liver and bacon and my husband had a large plate of ham egg and chips. It was good to have the option of having a smaller plate because I don't eat masses of meat. It would have been nice to have more onions, but the food was nicely cooked and tasty. We were offered a (handwritten), dessert menu, but I had no idea of cost. We did not partake. However, my main gripe is the lack of transparency on the bill. The waitress just came up with a figure, and when I asked to see the details, she just showed me another handwritten bill, (which she kept), then had one sum for all the food, and one sum for both the drinks. So I just paid it without knowing what I'd been charged for each meal. When I got home, I had a little check, because I thought the bill had been rather high. It appears that they charged the big plate price for the liver and bacon, (£11.95), instead of the small plate price, (£8.95); it was the only way it added up with about £8.00 for the drinks. If I'd been given a proper itemised bill in the first place, I would have realised we'd been overcharged. It's obviously only £3.00, but it's the principle, and eating out is a treat to us. I'm assuming it was a mistake but who knows? So just to say, check your bills, (and maybe insist on a proper itemised bill; I have no idea what the law is on this matter, but the whole pricing business was NOT transparent; highly unsatisfactory, I feel. It's a shame because it's a lovely place generally.

Went for afternoon tea. This was booked on the phone & was an easy process. When we sat down I had forgotten one of our party didn’t have butter/spread (that’s my bad) but the woman working there said it’s too late as the sandwiches had been made a bit abruptly, there was no meeting us half way by offering to make even a single sandwich for her ( again I didn’t mention it when I booked so am not blameless) but I wasn’t asked about any dietary requirements either, so that would be a good idea when people book. We were advised that we got Prosecco with our afternoon tea, I didn’t know what we got or how much it was - this wasn’t clarified over the phone either. So got to choose the alcohol or alcohol free option which was nice to have both options. After the afternoon tea had been bought out the lady came over and asked if we wanted our tea yet, we asked for 5 minutes. But after a good period of time I asked for a coffee so the lady took our tea pot and grabbed us our coffees, my mum asked after her pot of tea as she didn’t have it, so the woman had taken mums tea pot and have it to another table but after asking did bring the tea over. The sandwiches were sloppy, service was abrupt also. I’ve been here before and couldn’t fault the roast dinner but afternoon tea was a total let down. I won’t be returning for afternoon tea again ever. But dinner yes.

I have no idea how good or bad Cov's Pie and Mash is, because they decided to cancel their catering booking for my friend's event at 10pm the day before, to go to the Euros final instead. They had booked and paid for pie and mash for 40 people, so Covs had offered to arrange a back-up plan, but had again let my friend down when the driver supposedly had a flat tyre and couldn't make it to the event. Covs did refund my friend (when prompted), but they had to scramble to arrange back-up options for the party, whilst also hosting the party. My friend had also arranged signage for the party which advertised Covs' social media, and ordered specific bowls and plates that Covs had told them to order - so even though Covs had refunded the order, they were still out of pocket. For all I know, the food may be lovely, but the lack of professionalism and customer service shown by Covs was disgraceful. Avoid using them for any sort of catering or delivery service.

We popped into 8 Rocks for breakfast after a Parkrun. We are pleased we did. The place was clean, staff clearing tables quickly after customers had left and were very friendly and attentive without being overbearing or making us feel rushed. The menu was expansive - we had eggs royale and a salt beef bagel - both of which were lovely. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

RestoBistro is Epping’s best kept secret, nestled at the southern end of the high street. The food is absolutely delicious, all homemade. An independent restaurant with extremely high standards. The chef and management put on various special themed nights which are always fantastic. I particularly like the Sunday Roasts which are the best for miles around.
