The Carnivore in Edinburgh, City of

It looked good, however being the only 3 people in the restaurant it still took about an hour to receive our food 🧐🤨. To make matters worst the bill wasn’t split in three initially and created all manner of chaos with the Eat out to help out malarky. A simple void of the bill and re-doing split into three it with the discount applied would have been simpler but management refused 😒... Friendly waitresses but ended up in a bitter experience overall and i would not go back nor recommend...To boot the sausages were still a little undercooked.

Not an incredible experience…a few of us came for our Christmas night out. There were a couple of items missing off the Christmas menu, so some of us went a La Carte. It was pretty underwhelming. The wine was nice and the service was decent but i definitely wouldn’t rush back any time soon.

The food was very nice and the service was good, only downside was that it was a little cold inside

Nice venue with friendly staff. Three of us went and the food was mediocre to shockingly bad. I had basic fish and chips which was dull but OK. My two friends had the sirloin steak and had to send it away as the meat was so fatty and full of gristle it was inedible. Not sure where they're sourcing their meat, but the chef needs to be a bit more selective both with his buying and when he's preparing it.

Estivemos lá em outubro de 2022. Pedimos dois Carnivore Burger’s (acompanha fritas), uma cerveja pequena, uma cerveja grande e uma dose de Green Label. Tudo está ótimo, muito bem servido (exceto a dose de whisky, mas isso é padrão na cidade 🤣). Pagamos 36 libras na conta, o que foi mais em conta que vários outros lugares no centro. Tinha uma banda ótima tocando rock clássico. Eles convidaram qualquer um dos clientes que quisesse tocar/cantar junto com eles a seguir para o palco, daí um cara pediu a chance e cantou “What’s up?”, da Banda 4 non blondes. Foi sensacional, experiência mega autêntica. Em resumo, vai sem medo!

after initially having burnt our order of wings the server at first insisted that they were "done right" and the black parts were "paprika". i had to explain to our server that i was a cook myself and quite capable of telling burnt food from food which was not forgotten in the fryer and she replied i should tell their "chef" myself, she would go and get him. and so she did ... but the manager came instead. after the manager expertly and kindly confirmed the "burntness" of the wings we were getting a fresh order. this part was an unpleasant experience and entirely unnecessary, we will not return.

Walked past this place today and what a genuinely great find. We decided to give it. try - and it certainly did not disappoint. Great service and banter from the 2 lovely young ladies who served us - and food was amazingly presented and tasted absolutely fantastic. Will definitely be back!!!

Shocking, booked this on a website to be told at 5pm for our booking at 7pm that they couldn’t grant our table. I will hopefully let the restaurant retort why this was the case, poor lady on the phone unapologetic but it’s not her business so no point in being argumentative.

Ich hatte den Carnivore Burger und einen Old Fashioned. Beides war super lecker und die Bedienungen waren auch freundlich und zuvorkommend. Die Atmosphäre war angenehm und es wurde auch live Musik gespielt. Es konnten auch Gäste spielen und singen was ich sehr gut fand.

At over 6 quid for a pint this isn't the feint hearted but the bar staff are excellent and the place itself is a cosy, Swiss Chalet type of place

Decent food, but nothing too special, for a reasonable price considering the central location just off the Royal Mile. Service was a bit slow, but they were badly understaffed so that was understandable. Live music on Sunday evening, which was a nice touch.

Great spot, Robert greeted us very friendly and welcoming. We had some Mojitos and wings I'd definitely recommend you check this place out.

Great find, right next to Bannermans 👍 Lovely clean place with great atmosphere. Small menu but the food is fabulous. Service was slow when we visited, with empty glasses for ages and had to go to the bar to settle the bill ☹️🕺

Chicken burger was quite good and tasty, can't say the same about carnivore burger, that was quite regular.

Great night , good food and my son had his guitar with him unexpectedly, so he jammed with the guys that were on live. Fab atmosphere Definately a Sunday night is great as theres live music. Nice staff, thanks Robert.

We were served by Heather who offered an amazing service and spent some time chatting and sharing her experience with us! The menu offers a wide range of options, including vegetarian, and everything was tasty and delicious!

Entramos a cenar aquí porque nos llamó mucho la atención el local desde fuera. He de decir que fue donde mejor comimos en los días que llevabamos en Edimburgo ya que Inglaterra en sí deja mucho que desear en el tema comida. Lo más destacable fue la amabilidad y simpatía de una de las camareras que nos atendió, hizo que la cena fuese aún mas agradable.

Slow and slight... though there were two people serving us and only 2 other tables with patrons, the service was very slow and the portion size extremely small. Even though the menu said it was large, 4 bites sized pieces on a plate should not be considered an entrée.

Staff member excellent. Very attentive and friendly. However music not playing in our section. Med rare steak cam out approaching well done. Ox cheek bon bons verging on tasteless. Severe lack of atmosphere despite it being a Saturday night. Only 2 stars as waitress was exceptional

Very disappointed by the food and service. Food was ok but overpriced for the quality. I ordered steak with herb butter: the butter was not butter at all but “butter-flavored oil” which is a disgrace. Service was friendly but never came to check on us if we needed more water or the menu again. Take yourself and your money somewhere else.

Had diner with a group of friends. The servicestaff is friendly but the food is not that good. The portions of the sharingplates are too small. The proposed 600gram steak is way too small and a disappointment. The other dishes are cold or not that tasty. Would recommend to go to another restaurant than this one.

I took the carnivore burger with my family with a reasonable price and good services. The staff was so kind and the place was comfortable. I put 5 stars for you guys :)

Me and a group of five friends came here for dinner. We were on time for our booking and ordered our mains. 40 minutes later we had not received our food. Our waitress came over and said our food was delayed due to a 13 person table ordering in front of us. Given the size of the restaurant you’d expect they’d be used to serving promptly in such circumstances, but no. That table were served, had eaten and had their plates cleared and only then, an hour after ordering did we get our food. My friend who had ordered a ribeye medium got something much rarer. My steak sandwich was nothing special with hardly any steak in it. The best dish in this meat themed restaurant was the fish and chips. Then upon complaining about the slow service, we were offered a free drink, the offer of which we accepted. This was then rescinded due to ‘Scottish drinking laws prohibiting it’ and they offered to remove the OPTIONAL service charge which I had no intention of paying after the slow service anyway. Given the slow service we had no time to complain further and just paid and left. I would not recommend.

Seems like there‘s a new cook. The steak wasn‘t medium like ordered but more well done. Just a few sad looking sides on the plate. Especially remarkable/memorable was the fact that in the end this „dry“ ribeye steak was more expensive than it was stated in the menu. Had to pay this unjustifiably high price dispite the menues declaration, I was told that I got an older menu by accident..

Good food, good service, and a decent whiskey selection. More importantly it's not on the Royal Mile so a little less chaotic.

Went here this evening for a bite to eat on the last night of our trip. From the get go service was poor, got drink orders mixed up and one main course came 15 minutes before the other. The waiters/waitresses were very pleasant and made up for the poor quality by giving a discount off the bill which was very nice of them. Overall poor experience burger was poor but wings were decent.

Great service, great food, so fun to share huge plates with my older teens. Lovely clean environment, relaxed and comfortable. Huge bowls of cheesy chips, haggis on chips all fab!

We attended a speci evening (Tapas and Flamenco). The show was fantastic but the service at the restaurant was awful. Really slow and disorganised.

Very disappointing experience, Josh our waiter was excellent from the start. He explained to us that 2 members of the kitchen staff were off, and that their may be some delay, ordered our food(3 starters and 4 mains) we then waited an hour for our starters and a further 45 minutes for our main courses of which only 3 turned up. Once again Josh was apologetic and went to see where the other meal was, he returned and said it would be 5 mins, after 10mins the steak arrived but minus the sauce to which I was told they had run out. A different sauce was ordered and delivered to my table with another apology. After complaining a deduction was made to our bill. A very poor experience, will not be returning again however the staff did everything they could considering. No manager came to see us, all done via the waiter.

Que dire... cadre sympa avec un tres bon groupe live. Entrées correctes mais nous nous attendions à manger de la viande de qualité. Quelle déception! "Entrecote", payée 25 livres, pour une semelle sans goût et sèche comme pas possible alors que je l'avais demandé saignante (sans doute récuite ou surgelée). Trois pauvres frites surgelées dans l'assiette. Les burgers avec une viande infâme (au goût de viande soja...) sans même demander la cuisson... un des serveurs catastrophiquement lent au possible. A fuir sauf pour l'apéro

We spent time here having a very nice dinner. Young personnel, very smart and fast, good cooking, nice meet and good dinner. Not really expensive, definitely the right place if you wanna eat and drink well in Edinburgh in easy way!

Great staff AWFULL food. Lovely venue, Yes for a drink. No For eating ...Meat platter for two was only suitable if you just came from MC Donald's. Chef or owner should check what a rack of pork rib actually looks like.

The side dishes are great, but the steaks are not what they could be. To order a steak dish and not be asked how you'd like it cooked is a bit of a red flag.

Had a long wait for food when it came meat and vegetables were cold. Staff dealt with it very well, were extremely apologetic and very friendly. We did enjoy the night.

The food was tasty enough, the setting is very loud almost like a sports bar. The staff are busy but friendly. The food is over priced . A steak at twenty something for a but it was cooked well and had flavour with a tiny salad and chips. I enjoyed it but it is not the kind of place i would frequent or write home about.

Very low quality food. I had the Mexicana burger and the cheesy fries (just simple fries with some cheese on top and microwaved). The patty was dry and the bread soggy from the guacamole. The cocktails were very watery. Would prefer to pay a bit extra and have proper cocktails. Also, it was really cold inside, some of us had to keep wearing our coats while eating. Totally not worth it.

Arrived at 5 as our table was reserved for then for them not to open the doors until quarter past. Greeted and sat on a tiny table although othered we’re sat on more comfy and bigger tables, atmosphere was dead no music nothing. It took 10 minutes for them to take a drinks order and we waited a further 15 minutes for the drinks to arrive. We’ll one drink arrived and then the other arrived 5 minutes after. The Service was just so slow and not welcoming at all I had high hopes for this place and was very disappointed. We paid for our drinks and said we didn’t fancy eating anymore and they all looked so annoyed by this and didn’t even say goodbye or thank you. Ended up eating at the Christmas markets instead and glad we did! will not rerun very disappointed

Tasty food, reasonable price, good service. I had the carnivore burger, which was very filling. Cocktails were mostly ice, which was a bit disappointing - I'd recommend sticking to cider if you want a sweet alcoholic drink. We decided to come here because it was a little bit out of the way from the centre and quieter. Service was friendly and quick. I would recommend this place to couples/groups of friends. If you use Google maps to get there, it can be a bit confusing because it can lead you to a restaurant on the bridge above it! There's some steps around the corner to get down to it from here.

The place seemed lovely and the food looked promising. However, as soon as my porkchop arrived I could tell it was undercooked not only undercooked but RAW. The waitress apologized (very lovely staff) but when they brought the food back it was the same porkchop reheated, they filled the spaces I had cut the meat off with cherry tomatoes to look good 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️. And they ended up charging it.....I won't be going back.

Booked via website on 24th of Jan as thought it may be busy. Recieved a booking confirmation that night, thought brilliant! Really looking forward to this. Turned up this evening to what appeared to be a closed restaurant. Thought this couldn't be right but maybe I have made a mistake. Checked emails and found no cancellation email, checked Facebook to see if there had been a short notice closure notice posted - there hadn't and called 3 times to find noone answering. Very disappointed as had booked after many recommendations and research as a special place for a nice meal to celebrate our honeymoon. Would not recommend. UPDATE - at 22.34 I have recieved a cancellation email, I haven't requested to edit my booking so find this very strange to receive after I have posted a review.

Not a great experience here. First of all the drinks situation was pretty bad - at least the beer, a couple of people in our party asked (and received) half pints but were charged for 2/3rds. One of the beers wasn't on, but was just silently replaced for something else. Another of the beers was clearly off and tasted terrible, but we were still charged. So wouldn't really recommend getting any of that. Spirits or bottles probably the safer option. Then the food was OK, kinda chain quality, nothing special, but there was a lot of meat which is obviously the hook of this place. The burnt ends were actually pretty good with nice sauce, and the burger was nice, but not great quality (what I would expect from a spoons) but it was massive so no issue with small portions. Oh and the mens toilet door is missing, and there was a problem with our booking not matching the confirmation that thankfully didn't matter. I think there are better options nearby if you're looking for something similar.

After tending towards a more meat free diet over 2021. I enjoyed a complete relapse on my first visit to CARNIVORE. Great venue, good service and generous portions. Highly recommended.

Great food, but staff took no owner ship of the mishap with booking. It's fine to blame someone else for an over booking but taking a bit of ownership for not being informed of this would have been appreciated. Blame a booking company is all grand bit if you're over booked it's then up to you to inform people. Rather than advising me to complain to the booking agent, complain yourself if it's such a common problem. Also was it a 100, 50 or 40 over booked as that seemed to vary. Other than that food was great compliments to the chef but service sub-par

Me and the misses went here on a whim and were not disappointed at all. The food was lovely, well presented and flavourful. The staff were helpful, friendly and welcoming. If you are in Edinburgh and want some nice robs and chicken don't hesitate!

Lovely atmosphere and very welcoming, friendly staff but the food and drinks are a bit of a let down. They offered a selection of £5 cocktails which was great but my old fashioned was watery and my partners cosmopolitan was indeed very small as stated in other reviews but fine for the price. We both ordered the “southern” burger - the portion of chips was very small but very tasty and the wing pinned to the top of the burger was so very heavily over seasoned, it was like sawdust. Fortunately the burger itself was very good but overall not worth the £13.
