The Canteen at Maker Heights in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Unique setting. We always love coming here. Excellent food and friendly service. Book during busy times. Beautiful views along the coast just a short walk away

This is one of our favourite lunch and snack spots within reasonable distance of Plymouth and where the staff and the food never fail to please. You can book by phone but we didn’t because we couldn’t see that days menu in advance. Despite being a mid August weekday lunchtime the ferry was easy no wait drive on drive off and the route around Antony, Tregantle and Millbrook was easy and unimpeded. We should have clocked our predicament when we drove into the Canteen car park where there were already 80+ cars. About half the outside benches were filled but inside the tables were full everywhere and the queue was very long. Everything is fresh, both classic and invented, very tasty, home cooked and assembled. Customers outside are given a vibrating flashing device to alert that food is ready. Our overall wait was almost 50 minutes but no one’s fault given the time of day. When we finally got our tasty platters the food was delightful. No regrets other than our planning. We should have bought a bottle of wine or some beer at the counter to help pass the time. Interesting that the customers on Wednesday were very predominantly older folk grandparent types often with smallish children - baseball caps etc- and a smattering of students/early twenties types. All relaxed and evident patches of fun but terribly nice. The Canteen has a good feel, we will remain regulars. Pleased to recommend.

Lovely place, great food and a nice buzz. We walked round the coast path from Cremyll and had earned our food! Smoked mackerel salade niçoise and veggie frittata were both delicious

I'm not a vegetarian, but the Taster Board that is served here is the best vegetarian dish I've ever had. I've been back several times now and the content varies each time, depending on what's available at the time. This time I took my daughter and her husband, who are both vegetarians, and they were blown away. The dish consists of several items including breads made on site, usually at least two different ones, a piece of frittata, a small cup of gazpacho soup, half a savoury muffin, two different dips/hummus', and a few salad leaves with an amazing vinaigrette sprinkled over it. We decided to get three desserts to share between us too, and they were equally amazing. On top of all this the service was 5 star and the view is exceptional. You can sit inside or outside and they also allow dogs. I've have been there many times now, as it's quite local to me, but I intend to keep going back.

Happened to come across this place on Google maps and after checking it out , found out it had great reviews and recommendations. Great food choice and plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. Food was excellent. Its off the beaten track but we'll worth a visit. Also has some Fantastic views.

Just amazing! I swear that The Canteen at Maker has to do one of the best breakfasts ever and yes, the view also helps. A firm favourite, we visited with my father in law who is coeliac. No problem. Understood the restrictions and his breakfast was as good as ours. It's a mixture of well trained staff who care, great preparation of the food, local ingredients and great presentation. If you have not been then you need to check it out.

Lovely destination for a spot of lunch with a view Having walked the dogs from Cawsands up onto makers heights we braved the breeze to sit outside and enjoy a bit of lunch Wr had beetroot and strawberry salad yummy and a side of fries all thoughts of diet forgotten!! Daytime breakfast and afternoon meals alfresco or inside the well furnished nissen huts. Excellent breakfast presentation, tasty and local produce. ( Can be difficult to find a table at busy times but plenty of outside benches ) We arrived around 10am on a Friday and were lucky not having to wait long to order. Staff team were brilliant hard working and keen to ensure quality standards. Highly recommended.

This is an amazing find on a beautiful day and so good we are going back today. On a wet day there is good seating inside too. The kitchen is in an old missen hut, and open to all, with a fabulously different menu of light lunchtime bites. So popular it can run out but amazing value for money. Totally recommend the great service and cheerful people. Great food and a cold beer too. Congratulations

I wish The Canteen was open for dinner but we had two great lunches there, they even arranged beautiful weather. The All the Garden soup went down very well. Sunday lunch roast pork was delicious and the pavlova was delightful. I cannot think of any negatives at all, even the price is reasonable.

Fantastic breakfast with family at The Canteen. Camping here behind The Canteen for a week has been delightful! Outstanding baked treats made from locally sourced ingredients, exquisitely presented and decorated with a nod to local colours with hedgerow petals and homegrown herbs. Hearty servings to set you up for a days’ exploring or to warm the soul on a chilly morning - what’s not to love?

Wonderful food and service, reasonably priced ..well done! Have been several times now but my only thought is I wish they wouldn’t always give us the table next to the children’s play area and the door to the loos. Definitely the worst table to have especially when you’re hearing not great and children playing right behind you ..next time I’ll remember to request a different table. Nice for the kids to have a play area but maybe not the best spot for it . Everything else wonderful…..

Had a Sunday Lunch .last weekend. Very busy. Great reviews. Havnt been there for years. Considering the weather was very busy. I had the Roast Lamb. Some of the lamb was tough .roast potatoes were overcooked I had to cut my wife's up. And not much veg. I then had the crumble and custard. Which was luke warm.surly should be nice and hot.? Yes should have complained at the time but we were newbies and they were very busy. Frankly disappointed seeing Lamb was over 17 pounds.

A sneaky breakfast in the misty rainy morning. I am so glad to welcome the team back at what, in my opinion, is the tastiest restaurant in Cornwall, if not the whole of the UK. A great success since they first started well over a decade ago. It's always a joy when Nick and Co return from their well-earned winter break. The Maker breakfast and Veggie breakfast were 'ansum as ever. Great ambience and quickly filling up even though the weather is 'inclement'. Even the tunes are appropriate. 😀

Yum, Yum & Yum. We visited for breakfast for all but 1 of our days on holiday. Firstly note breakfast ends at 11. The atmosphere, welcoming friendly staff and service were all top rate. The mince pies were probably the best Jane has ever had and she is somewhat of an expert. The breakfast selection was wide, portion sizes generous and prices reasonable. The rest of the menu looked great but we didn’t partake. Dog friendly with plenty of free on site parking, we will definitely be back.

Came here a year ago with family and enjoyed it so much, when friends came to visit we came for Sunday lunch. Only about an hour’s drive😃 Lovely staff, good food, great location, quirky building. Old army Nissan huts, converted, great idea for staying in keeping with the geography and history. A Plymouth girl now living in Cornwall I am well familiar with Maker Camp and get that nostalgic feeling looking down over Kingsand/ Cawsand.

Superb ‘traditional’ English breakfast using local produce. I had the ‘baby’ (se pic). Sausage and bacon excellent, perfect poached egg on Soda bread toast. Staff delightful. Very (well behaved) dog friendly. Flat white coffees great. We’re going back to lunch as the menu looks very tempting. It’s licensed.

We regularly make the 3.5 hour journey especially to visit the Canteen at Maker, simply because we enjoy eating there so much. The food is always amazing and is served by incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff. This combined with the view and the open space for our children to run around in, makes it second to none in my opinion. We as a family can’t recommend the Canteen @ Maker enough.

Our trip to the Canteen was superb, as it has been on many holidays to Cornwall over the years. The staff were super friendly and we managed to grab a table looking out on the beautiful Cornish coast line. The food was superb and super fresh. Hands down the best breakfast and lunch in the South west. Amazing food, friendly staff and a beautiful vista makes it a really special place. I love that the lunch menu changes to suit the seasonal fruit and veg, always exciting new dishes to try. Last time I stoped by I had the lobster, it was so delicious. My husband and I can’t find any better chips, skin on and full of flavour.

Honestly probably eaten here over 100 times, the staff always remain chirpy even when there stacked out, food is always reasonably priced but the quality never fails to deliver. Always leave, plate empty tummy full. Miss this, you miss out!

It is pity that this fantastic operation is currently offering pizza of a shameful substandard. Napoli - the traces of tomato 'sauce' were barely smeared on a top with invisible traces of mozzarella, there was nothing else on it except 4 anchovies and 5 olives. Totally tasteless and extremely salty, not to mention the non apetising look. Made a supermarket pizza look & taste gourmet. Goat Cheese - with raw onions on a top was a bodged attempt to do something with as little effort as possible. Ingredients seemed to be raw and cold for both.

Very basic facilities but the food was excellent and the staff we encountered were all really down to earth. So much so, we went back as a preference over other places tried. On our first day in the area we stopped and ate their lobster outdoors and on our last, their breakfast.The view is great and the half lobster prepared beautifully, very tasty, and we felt reasonably priced. It was also great to have some home cooked chips rather than the same old same old frozen chips that everywhere serves. The breakfast was delicious. Perfect poached eggs and we found all produce used to be excellent. We really enjoyed both meals.

We had heard so many good reviews about The Canteen so decided to drive for a good hour to experience it.Sadly we were all very disappointed. Our food was not at all as it has been shown in photos. The fishcakes were by far the best thing. The Lamb meze was on dry couscous, it was fatty, tough and very dry, the Hake was just Hake on some chips, tasteless Be warned if you are trying to book they do not answer their phone so no point as its first come plus they do not have a liquor license.

We have visited several times and the food continues to exceed our expectations. The vegetarian offerings vary and are always top notch. Crab on toast is beautifully presented and the tastiest crab in this part of Cornwall. Coffee and cakes are always superb. This restaurant is a gem in South East Cornwall. Went for lunch at the old Maker camp. The canteen is very rustic and basic, the food was delicious. we started with a bread sharing plate which was very tasty. followed bya pulled pork burger and a full roast mackerel.We will be going again. Fabulous.
