The Canons' Gait Restaurant in Edinburgh, City of

The food was delicious, but the service was very inattentive. We had to wait forever to place our order. We weren't informed that service would stop after 9 p.m. Instead, you have to pay at the bar first, and if you want another drink, you also have to order at the bar. It would have been courteous if we had been told this, as we waited over half an hour for a server. Furthermore, the bartender quickly became annoyed when my card didn't respond to payment promptly. So, I don't see any need for a service charge. The food was still great, but the service was unlike anything I've ever experienced. Therefore, I won't be visiting this bar again. There are much better bars in Edinburgh!

Sadly we couldn't get any Cullen soup that we wanted to try, but we got fish any ships! Very big portion! Great quality.

Everything was very delicious: the local gin, the Fish & chips, Haggis nepps & tatties and the Pai of weeks were three excellent dishes at a good price in a comfortable atmosphere with good music and excellent service.

The most overcooked burger I’ve ever been served. Service was terrible. Place was slow. Bartenders and weight staff were eating behind the bar rather than taking care of of any patrons.

A group of 6 came into this place on a trip from Newcastle and the ginger man with a beard didn’t even look up from his laptop to greet us. We asked what the pie of the day was and at 11:55 he said he would tell us at 12 when the kitchen opened. He was so rude and made us feel very unwelcome. Wouldn’t recommend going to this place at all

Edit: my total bill was around 33 pounds on the reader, checked my account and the total was over 42 pounds. The main was about 15-16, starter was 7 and 1 beer. These people are not only rude but thieves as well. Updating my review to reflect this. Don't go here. Bartender/manager insulted me for ordering a single malt he apparently didn't like, off of the menu they provide to guests. Considering this bar is in the most touristy part of town it seemed funny he was so pretentious. There are several pubs around this area that won't insult you. The food was good, but service was slow, and it's difficult to recommend after the unsolicited rudeness. I'd recommend World's End just a block up instead.

My son and I found this pub walking back to our hotel from Arthur’s Seat. Great atmosphere! The first waitress was all business and cold, the second waitress was friendly. We both got bangers & mash, and agreed it was awesome. I wish we were there when they had live music. It was a Monday night, and we rolled in around 8:00. I’ll definitely go back and would highly recommend this pub.

A great stop for fish and chips after seeing the Castles . There were very hardworking and friendly folks here. A little Scottish charm to go with it.

Highly recommended by my hotel. I loved the decor and the food. I took the haggis, which was excellent and hearty. I returned, greeted by a very friendly French waitress. I had a Cullen skink, delicious. Good atmosphere.

We ordered a whisky from him. And we didn't receive it. We told them we didn't receive it. In the end, we charged them 4 times. BEWARE OF THIEVES.

We were served after more than 45 minutes of waiting, a young waiter completely overwhelmed and sweating, forgot to serve us our drinks, we had to ask him for it. In the end, we are charged for drinks that we did not drink. We were very disappointed by the service and their dishonesty, but still had a good meal. If you don't speak English properly, I don't recommend this pub.

The canon’s gait has fantastic atmosphere and even better food! We caught live music the last night we were in Scotland and wow did it just top off the trio just right. The weekly meat pies are delicious ! I tried a steak one one week and a chicken one the next! Both were killer!

Stopped into this pub for desserts immediately prior to heading out of Edinburgh. they have a good selection of beers on tap and several cask beers, which I've grown to love. i cannot get these very often in the states, but after having one in London I'm addicted. anyway, the beer was excellent, service was friendly, and our desserts were tasty. no complaints at all.

Stopped in for lunch with my wife. Impressive bar! Ordered some food expecting standard pub grade food. Was blown away by the excellent quality of food served. My wife was very happy which made me as well. The Canons' Gait is worth the stop!

We stopped by for a couple of pints from the bar. The cheese board here was excellent. It's definitely something to share as the portions of each cheese were huge. Great place to relax after a day of hiking up and down the royal mile.

I ordered the Haggis Bon Bons and the Haggis, Neeps and Tatties. The Haggis Bon Bons were delicious; full of flavour and rich, and the sauce added extra flavour. A great starter and excellent presentation. Unfortunately, the main course of the Haggis was bitterly disappointing. It was hot on the edges, but cold in the centre and also in other small areas scattered within the haggis tower. In the centre, the layer of haggis, neeps and tatties were all the same degree of coldness, which indicated to me that it had been microwaved, likely from a frozen state. Perhaps this might have been rectified had there been a food checkback, but no server checked either my starter or main until I had fully eaten it. Perhaps management might consider implementing this as standard practice, as I do not blame the servers for not doing something that wasn't told to them in training. As for the rest of service, my server was quite friendly and helpful in answering my questions. The pub had a bright and warm atmosphere, and was well decorated.

Pleasant enough pub, quick service at the bar and £6.20 for a Guinness. Nicely lit and the food looked pretty good! They had a few big TVs showing what looked like daytime TV from the 90s which was a bit odd.

Brilliant staff - bit of a tourist hotspot if you want to sit at the bar and people watch. Chips are good. They serve tennents. What more do you actually need?

The fish n' ship was absolutely disgusting. I threw up all night after that meal. Too bad the setting is cool and typical.

Food was tasty, nice selection of beer. Service was decent but could be better, we waited 10 minutes before ordering and it wasn’t that busy.

My wife and I went here for lunch and had a great meal. I'll never forget the sausages with mash potatoes and onion gravy. Delicious! The staff was very kind and generous. Excellent quality and superb customer service.

The food here on a Saturday at 1 PM was extremely bad. The meal tasted as if it had been microwaved, and the haggis I ordered tasted old it was hard and congealed, and far from fresh. It was one of the worst meals I can remember, and I wouldn’t return.

We thoroughly enjoyed the haggis neeps and mash followed by deep fried mars bar - a complete Scottish culinary experience!

There is not much to choose from for food but to have a beer or a whiskey it is perfect 👌 Of course, if you go after 6:00 p.m., don't go with minors...

One of the typical pubs in the centre of the tourist routes for showing attitude instead receiving customer with smile and welcoming vibes. Not really busy but still you have to wait for a drink at counter. No doubt nice atmosphere to cheer you up but i’m not here just for atmosphere.

Glad to have bumped into this place! Food was delicious, the restaurant is lovely, and the staff is super nice! And a special shout out for Mac! She was so sweet and helpful!! Best place for a good meal or just some drinks 😊😋

Can't put 0 damage. We reserved a table for 8 by email 8 days before with confirmation by email. Arrived at the scheduled time to be told that it was not possible to eat because there was no more food. No email to notify us. Bravo for respecting the customer.

They seated 3 tables. We were the first. It was not busy at all. The second group left after 10 minutes. We left after 25. The 3rd left with us. I guess they just don't want money? We went somewhere else where we could actually order.

Fuimos a cenar a este restaurante, en el momento en que cruzamos la puerta nos encontramos con un chico joven que parece trabajar más detrás de la barra, no quería vernos más que una dosis de diahorea, realmente no se hicieron sentir bienvenidos, el chico simplemente no quería hacer ningún trabajo extra. Finalmente se nos acercó y se nos mostró a una mesa, nos sentamos y deliberamos si levantarnos e irnos e ir a otro lugar cuando nos atendió esta encantadora dama, creo que era francesa, estaba loca, muy divertida, muy trabajadora y mostró gran interés en sus clientes, un crédito absoluto al restaurante, totalmente opuesto a la primera eejjiittt. De todos modos pedimos el Bangers and Mash, pastel de carne de res, mi hija tenía goujons, la comida era absolutamente increíble, realmente vale la pena la experiencia inicial de mierda, he leído otras críticas y son muy mixtos, puedo ver por qué, cierto personal requiere mostrado la puerta, pero la comida era brillante, pequeña propina a este restaurante, leer las críticas, si el propietario no tiene el cerebro para ordenar estos pequeños problemas, entonces que así sea. Typical pub, top decor, I loved the Mac & Cheese. Very good address.

Good food and nice atmosphere We lived nearby so we had lunch twice. All local specials were delicious. I especially recommend Cullen Skink. Yorkshire pudding is a bit chewy though not fluffy.

We stopped in for lunch & ordered fish & chips, half an hour later we were told there was only one fish, not a huge issue so we both chose the ‘Edinburger’, one chicken, one Beyond burger (vegetarian). The dishes came out & I checked with the server that it was the correct burger, she confirmed it was a Beyond burger. I wasn’t convinced, I smelt it & it was beef. The server came running over apologizing saying that it was beef. (It appeared she spoke with her colleague who took our order). My‘Beyond’ burger eventually came out on a plate of fries with a wedge of lemon & tartar sauce?! I cut the burger in half & the middle of it was cold & uncooked. I told the server to take it all away & we’ll go to a pub that knows what they’re doing. My husband ate the chicken burger & he said it’s the worst food he’s had the whole week we’ve been in Scotland. The young female server was very apologetic & we actually felt sorry for her dealing with the incompetence of the kitchen staff. I don’t know where the manager was but you would think they would be interested in sorting out the circus that went on this afternoon. Honestly, don’t waste your time or money.

Sadly a terrible experience which left me with food poisoning from undercooked pork meat. I did question if the sausages (in the bangers and mash) were cooked but gave it the benefit of the doubt. After eating I travelled 3 hours home later and shortly after that was hit with the most horrible food poisoning which lasted nearly 12 hours, safe to say I am put off meat for a bit. Wouldn’t recommend for this reason

Some of the worst food I've had in a while. Driest burger ever, sausages that tasted like mystery meat, watery flavourless gravy, chips that tasted worse than ones I make at home from frozen and roasted veg that were definitely not fresh. Shoulda known since it was full of American tourists but at least the service was all right

Food was great, I had the Highland chicken, novel use of haggis wrapped in chicken & bacon, served with fondant potato, carrots & whiskey cream sauce. My husband had gammon steak, which was thick and served with homemade chips. Staff where attentive and polite, highly recommend.

We went in for a drink at 2:15pm on a Saturday. The place was near empty and had plenty of seats. Pretty rude waiter came up to us and told us to leave because it's food only. You're literally a pub on the Royal Mile, come on now

Came for dinner after arriving from Edinburgh an hour or so previously. Busy pub, but got a table straight away. My wife and I both had fish and chips. Servings were big and we could not finish them. Flavour was fine. Live music was good but loud so we asked for a table at the back

We were looking for some pub with live music and good food and beers.... and we found!! Suggested because is not so turistic and the good food meet the live music.

Very nice pub right on the main street Royal Mile, the dishes to choose from are not many but all typical and good. By pure chance we had the pleasure of attending the performance of a group playing traditional music

2nd time in a year - good food, patient staff, dog friendly - a few obnoxious german customers but live and let live..

What a little gem on The Royal Mile. The food was delicious and reasonable. As a matter of fact, it was so good we returned the next night. The staff were wonderful and the pub is seeped in atmosphere. On Wednesday night, a group of local musicians gather to practice and socialize. How lucky we were to experience this! We would definitely recommend this to anyone visiting Edinburgh.

Reallly good find on the Royal Mile, very homely and great atmosphere! They had live music the night i came. Really good bangers and mash, and the best sticky toffee pudding i’ve ever had! Which i don’t say lightly, 10/10 for me!

It wasn’t great , the prices were high and the food wasn’t really worth it . It was recommended by another publican tho we shouldnt have bothered . It didn’t have a great atmosphere and had mediocre food I wouldn’t recommend

Absolutely fantastic food and experience. Traveling from the U.S. As with all places in the UK, service is not as fast as America. But that's normal so don't complain. The food is fantastic. The service is great. Can't say enough. There was live music when we came on a Tuesday evening. Loved it! We grabbed lots of food and appetizers. So we spent a fair amount, but you could easily enjoy a meal for under £20.
