Came for dinner after arriving from Edinburgh an hour or so previously. Busy pub, but got a table straight away. My wife and I both had fish and chips. Servings were big and we could not finish them. Flavour was fine. Live music was good but loud so we asked for a table at the back

We had lunch here. It was phenomenal. Great atmosphere. And the food was delicious. Highly recommended.

We were looking for some pub with live music and good food and beers.... and we found!! Suggested because is not so turistic and the good food meet the live music.

2nd time in a year - good food, patient staff, dog friendly - a few obnoxious german customers but live and let live..

Very nice pub right on the main street Royal Mile, the dishes to choose from are not many but all typical and good. By pure chance we had the pleasure of attending the performance of a group playing traditional music

What a little gem on The Royal Mile. The food was delicious and reasonable. As a matter of fact, it was so good we returned the next night. The staff were wonderful and the pub is seeped in atmosphere. On Wednesday night, a group of local musicians gather to practice and socialize. How lucky we were to experience this! We would definitely recommend this to anyone visiting Edinburgh.

Reallly good find on the Royal Mile, very homely and great atmosphere! They had live music the night i came. Really good bangers and mash, and the best sticky toffee pudding i’ve ever had! Which i don’t say lightly, 10/10 for me!

It wasn’t great , the prices were high and the food wasn’t really worth it . It was recommended by another publican tho we shouldnt have bothered . It didn’t have a great atmosphere and had mediocre food I wouldn’t recommend

Absolutely fantastic food and experience. Traveling from the U.S. As with all places in the UK, service is not as fast as America. But that's normal so don't complain. The food is fantastic. The service is great. Can't say enough. There was live music when we came on a Tuesday evening. Loved it! We grabbed lots of food and appetizers. So we spent a fair amount, but you could easily enjoy a meal for under £20.

If you are not seated by “host” they will not serve you. Went to the bar to ask if we could get service. Girl brought us water said she would be back to take order and never came back to our table after waiting 20 minutes for her. She walked around and was chatting with her coworkers. The pub was not packed. Very rude! We walked out!

This is what a Scottish pub should be like! Loving atmosphere. The furnishings are quaint and extremely comfortable! Large selection of whiskeys and gins etc, super friendly staff! Compliment. We “escaped” here during a rain shower and had a drink at the bar. Because we liked the food that was brought past, we came back a few hours later and it was great! The starter - wee taste of Haggis - super delicious, the main courses - Bangers & Mash and Fish & Chips - terrific!!! Absolute tip. Be there early, otherwise the place will be packed

They have mac 'n cheese with haggis! The cheesecake and the fried chocolate bar are highly recommended. It was very tasty.

Nice place and friendly service. The meals have been fine. The beer was very good, especially the idea to get 3x1/3 pint of different kinds and have a changing "guest" ale.

Great pub on the Royal Mile further down from madness of the top end.

Very good option for bar and food. The Scottish salmon was excellent. They have an extensive list of whiskey.

Absolutely brilliant loading. The staff is great and always nice no matter how busy it is. The cocktails are amazing and the food is delicious and always fresh. In total we were here 3 or 4 times in one week. Highly recommended.

Has 'interesting' Gluten Free Menu INCLUDING GF beer on tap. Sadly, IPA, not a Stout. Nachos were OK. My idea of Chicken Nachos has a LOT more chicken on them. And, a WHOLE LOT more cheese. But, I'm not in my kitchen preparing 'home made.' So satisfying, and feel safe eating here. Always a good thing!

Great food, the staff was very nice and the prices are affordable We also tried the fried mars, which was very interesting, totally worth a visit and a try!

The typical pub. Very curious for the observant tourist. We ordered soup of the day and cullen skink. The 2 soups were quite good, although the cullen was too loaded with large pieces of potato and little fish. What they don't do very well there is fish and chips, the batter has too much hard crust. They bring you the bill with the 10% tip added

Interesting to read others found staff here rude. One barman with blue hair in particular had a big chip on his shoulders. After he missed serving me three times I put my hand up to draw his attention and he yelled at me saying I was being rude so wouldn’t serve me. I was so shocked and speechless as was not expecting that. An other staff member said they would come to my table to take my order as I wanted to order diner also. When he came to take my order he apologised for his colleagues behaviour and said they regularly have issues with him. Another woman who was serving us was fabulous and when she asked if everything was ok I let her know what happened with the barman with the blue hair and said it was a pretty awful experience. She was very apologetic and said they have a lot of problems with him so I don’t know how he’s holding down his job, perhaps he owns it and judging from all the other comments about this pub, it appears that’s the culture. Food was very average. There are many pubs to choose from so do yourself a favour and skip this one and go somewhere where you’re welcomed.

My girlfriend and I were there last night to get some food and we were impressed! We were looking for a nice traditional pub in the centre of Edinburgh and this was one of the first places that came up. Lovely pints of Tennent’s (£5.50) which paired perfectly with the Haggies, Neeps and Tatties we got for dinner. Surprisingly, they also have a very good amount of vegetarian alternatives, such as the aforementioned. Food and drinks are reasonably priced, our total came out at around £48. Staff were really nice, especially the lady that served us which went above and beyond to make sure everything was right.

A charming traditional pub/restaurant with a great basic menu of popular and traditional Scottish dishes and the last of the Edinburgh festival fringe Royal mike venues near to the Hollywood palace and Scottish parliament building.

Great food, friendly, friendly, attentive staff. Good selection of beers. Although we arrived late in the evening, we were still made welcome.

Called in off chance. Greeted with enthusiasm and friendly attitude. Very good food menu but an amazing drinks list. Young waitress was very attentive, friendly and helpful. One slight moan, a pie is not a stew with a separate puff lid, however it was an excellent dish. The chips here are to die for. Excellent meal all round.

Lots of food choices and everything we had was lovely - haggis, steak pie and Caesar salad. The sticky toffee puddings were delicious too. Friendly and efficient service despite it being really busy. Thoroughly recommend.

Might just be because we are foreigners, but this place was amazing. Food was good, atmosphere great but the best thing was really the service. We will be back the next time we visit Edinburgh for sure! Price was 25£ per person (approx.)

Attending Fringe show which was entertaining but found the staff behind the bar extremely rude and abrupt. They must have been having a bad day😐. Won't be going again.

Poor when my choice of vegan options had run out, so had the uninspiring and unimaginative burger option. Still automatically added 10% service charge until I queried the bill and they then knocked it off.

One of the more typical pubs in the centre of the tourist routes. Young, fun, cool and above all friendly staff. We used it for a little break from the hustle and bustle and to top up our liquid balance. Real pub atmosphere inside, great for people-watching outside.

Nice location, good food. Had the steak pie and the puff pastry on it was great—buttery and crisp and flaky. They also had fried Mars bar on the menu which I didn’t try but was happy to see!

A piece of hospitality advise to the miserable girl in baggy jeans. When a party walk and approach the bar with someone who MAY need to show ID don’t ask the man in the group ‘DOES SHE HAVE ID’ ask the person who you are concerned about. Maybe even ask ‘Hi, could I see your ID please’. THEN WHEN TOU SEE THE ID don’t walk away and let people stand for ten minutes while you ignore them. Just a bit rubbish. Manners and an education go a long way in the hospitality sector. Tonight there were neither….

Very original and friendly young people in service. You can sit outside and watch the flow of people and you can order hearty pub food and eat it outside or inside.

We had a fantastic experience at the Canon's Gait this evening. I had the meat pie and it was delicious. We followed dinner with the deep fried Mars bar. I highly recommend this place for the quality of food, excellent service and great atmosphere!

Nice bar, but we sat directly at the bar, 3 waitresses behind the bar but no one to come and serve us for 10 minutes, we finally called and were told that if we didn't come to eat we couldn't have a drink drink because we were accompanied by an 11 year old child....in short we went elsewhere...

Went in for lunch. Was busy, but tables available. Got seated quickly. Great choice on menu catering for all tastes, i.e., vegetarian/vegan. Great drink selection as well. Food and drink came fairly quickly. Pub has a very good atmosphere. Definitely will go back🙂

Excellent service on a busy day. The homemade tomato soup was delicious, as was everything our party of four ordered. Highly recommend walking a little farther from the castle to get to this spot. You’ll avoid the frantic, crowded tourist spots & have a nice lunch here.

Elizabeth was our bartender. She EXCELLENT! She was from the US but knew the culture in Scotland well. It had great Scotish music ! Thumbs up ! We just had a couple beers. Didn't eat but looked amazing.

We really enjoyed this pub. Great food and beer. I was going to rate it 5/5 for sure but I had to go with 4 stars eventually because they charge you 10% fee on their own without telling you. I planned to give 10% myself and I also did. But I wouldnt if I noticed they do it for you! Good pubs shouldn't do this. It’s a pitty because this one other than that really good is. But why should I pay 20% extra? I don't know but it spoiled my experience a bit.

A very cozy English tavern with excellent service

We wanted to try this pub which we had seen on the first evening but found it full. Typical Scottish pub atmosphere, we decided to try the mac&cheese with added bacon for me and bacon and chicken for my boyfriend. Delicious dish accompanied by garlic toast, plentiful and cooked perfectly. Very good Caledonia Scottish beer at an affordable price. We were right, luckily we found a place on the second evening.

We entered by chance, the kitchens close very early in Edinburgh. They served us 10, delicious food, normal price.

Great pub! We really enjoyed our meals and our food came out less than 10 mins after ordering. They are dog friendly too. Our dog was invited in and they gave us a water dish for her. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience here.

One of the best Pubs on the Royal Mile. A regular spot for me whenever in Edinburgh. Food didn't live up to its usual standard this time but atmosphere is great and staff are friendly.

I recommend the Wee Taste of Haggis! Salt and pepper the neeps to taste. The beef and ale pie was very good and enough to split. After a few days here, this was truly one of the best indoor seating locations we had the pleasure of experiencing. The staff was prompt and friendly!

One of the best pubs that I visited in Edinburgh! The food was amazing and the portions were very large. I had the Veggie Pastie which was incredible. The atmosphere was perfect and our server, Elizabet, was the kindest and funniest person! Highly recommend this pub!
