The Canbury Arms in Kingston upon Thames

We really used to enjoy the Canbury arms but the last few visits have been disappointing, with our most recent visit concluding that it has to drop off our list for a while. We ordered garlic mushrooms, and were confused as the mushrooms were cold. They were actually so cold we assumed that they were intended to be served that way, so we didn’t say anything at the time. Only to our disappointment did our roast dinners come out with several elements on the plate being fridge cold. The gravy had curdled and was congealed in lumps over the veg and potatoes. We don’t normally complain/send things back but all of our plates had to be sent back for the gravy to be replaced and for reheating. They came back lukewarm - a slight improvement, rendering them just about edible, but our disappointment remained. Even the Yorkshire could be snapped in half like a stale biscuit. Honestly, it’s such a shame that this potentially lovely place is resorting to poorly reheating food that clearly has been sitting around far too long. Please get someone competent in your kitchen!! It’s such a waste, and over very silly and very avoidable mistakes :-(. Money down the drain…

Food and service were all good. Coffees were only lukewarm. A further cup was offered.

Lovely local! We've been going there for many years. On this bank holiday Monday occasion we just felt the service staff, although they tried thrif best, was very poorly trained in basic skills. The plant burger was good, just very small and the red onions should be cut into finer rings than what we had. Good decision to have really great chips and not fries with it! Could not locate a beef burger on the menu? The mushroom gnocchi looked and tasted lovely, however had an enormous amount of oily residue in the bottom of the plate which caused slight concern and followed by slight nausea later in the evening. Fish & chips absolutely spot on! Still loving the Canbury Arms though!

Love this place. Great food and service. Super friendly and plenty of space for the four legged friends.

Sadly no draught Guinness on this occasion! And only other grumble was that the kitchen needed to have changed the washing machine water, rinse aid and or softener, everything was stained and smeared, otherwise, staff wear polite and reasonably attentive on what had clearly been a busy Easter holiday weekend. If you want to escape always worth checking out the dinning room upstairs (if not booked) with its open fire ‘cosy’!

Organised an area in the bar for some drinks for my Husbands birthday and we had a great time. Only negatives were a member of staff behind the bar served myself and friend our drinks but when we asked him for a bowl to just put some crisps in he replied with "where would I get a bowl from?? I don't even work here!" Which we thought was extremely odd & abit rude but other than the young man behind the bar, other staff members were friendly! The atmosphere was very lively with the rugby on which added to our day & will definitely return in the future

A lovely place for a Sunday roast, we had a great meal today to celebrate Mother's Day. The food was excellent and the service was really good. Joseph, Lara and Bruce looked after us very well and it was good to see Alex, one of the chefs, come into the dining room to see how things were. Would definitely recommend.

We were a large group of friends meeting up prior to going to watch International Rugby, at Twickenham. We were made to feel welcome with very good service, good food and drinks.

Stunning mothers day lunch. On a day when places are packed and normally service suffers, the Canbury maintained the highest standards. Great food... Like really great, good service and good value. Thumbs up!

went for a sunday roast and was the best one we’ve had in a while!

Delicious Sunday lunch in a warm and friendly atmosphere. A perfect venue for a 40th birthday celebration with 10 of us, ranging from 14 months to 80 years old! Service was a little slow as the venue was very busy but the staff were always helpful and accommodating and the food was excellent.

Great food and drinks for our party of 12. They were short staffed due to call-offs but still had great service. It was not fast, as expected for our size of party. Highly recommend the Chicken Supreme.

The beef within the roast was fantastic; I would definitely get that again there. The roast as a whole was great too, including the texture of the potatoes (crispy coating, soft in the middle, and easy to cut through) albeit I'd have liked the potatoes to have been more seasoned. There was a great amount of gravy as well, albeit a little thicker would have been best. Great atmosphere & decor inside the pub, with friendly & helpful service.

We visited on a dull, wet Wednesday evening and were disappointed by the ambiance and the food. We are locals and visit regularly, but our experience this time was not as good as we have enjoyed in the past. The bar area was almost empty and the restaurant, where we were seated, was quiet with the exception of a party of 10 and 2 other diners. So it was surprising that we had to signal to say that we needed to order drinks and again when we needed to order food. We shared anchovies for a stater and these were very good. Unfortunately the mains were very disappointing. I ordered the courgette risotto, which came with the option of adding a chicken supreme, which I did. My parter had the fish cakes. When the food arrived, the risotto was barely warm and was missing the chicken, but was surrounded, inexplicably, by vegetable crisps. We waited a while to signal this omission to the server, but no one seemed to be around so I resolved to eat my risotto as it was going cold. The fish cakes were ok, but seemed to have been deep fried. This lack of attention to the order, the cold food, the bizarre garnish all seems so out of character for the Canbury that I came away thinking that either there has been a change in management or that a quiet Wednesday evening isn’t the right time to visit this place. Either way, we came away disappointed and not fully satisfied.

Attractive looking pub. Good choice of draught beer and lagers. Spacious and welcoming. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Had to wait too long for our main courses though.

The Canbury has to be one of my most favourite establishments. The building in itself is just so special and ooze's charm, warmth and character in whichever season you choose to visit. As a family of 5, we enjoyed the most tastiest of Sunday lunch’s yesterday, coupled with the most friendliest of staff. Thank you to everyone for a wonderful afternoon. Sarah

The food is really nice and the service was excellent. One of my group didn't realise there would be a bit too much fat in the pork belly for her, but staff kindly brought her an extra slice. Thank you.

First time visiting and was impressed by the look and feel of the pub, we arrived 20 mins early but were seated within 5 mins - we were asked if we wanted water for the table which we did, we didn't realise and it wasn't stated that this would be £5, we were then left for 20 minutes without being asked for our order- we eventually caught someone's eye and ordered - the food and drinks arrived at the same time - really quickly - however the Yorkshire pudding was stone cold and was sent back (to be replaced by a luke warm one) the roast was tasty but we were disappointed by the small portion. We also felt that the 12.5% service charge added to the bill was a bit cheeky!!

Went for my daughter's birthday because she fancied a pub lunch roast. Her dad, herself and I chose the roast beef, which took forever to arrive. I'll give that it was prettily plated, but that's about as good as it gets. Let's break it down: beef - cooked ok for me, probably a bit rare for most people. And two very small slices. Potatoes and Yorkshire's had probably been sitting around for a while as they were rather hard. The Yorkshire was more disappointing because I was hoping for a crispy, fluffy delight and didn't get it. The carrot was nice - although a little over cooked. The cabbage (Savoy) was slightly more al dente than I like, but better than over cooked. Most disappointing, however, was that it all arrived tepid. Even the gravy, which has got to be the easiest thing to keep warm. The atmosphere was nice and the dining room was attractive. The staff were polite, but rather absent.

Food was cold, ordered food and drink that didn't get delivered, out of various basics such as lime cordial. We did get a discount which was good, but would have much preferred good food and service

Had a Saturday lunch there with friends. Only one other table occupied, but we were our own party, so a great time was had. Good food, drink and service.

First time visiting today, and I can’t wait to come back! The food was lovely didn’t wait long at all, the staff were very helpful and made sure to ask about dietary requirements, which I think is brilliant! We had the roast dinners and chocolate brownie desert absolutely delicious!!!!

Honestly regret coming here. The service is not great and the food took over an hour to come and they had hardly any tables. For the size and quality - I don’t understand how it took so long. Would definitely not recommend and come back! Feedback - please warn customers the food will take over an hour. Honestly shocked!

The salad was lovely but a very small portion for a main course. There was no-one there to greet us when we arrived. We had to seek somebody out and then push two tables together ourselves - they didn’t seem to have prepared for our booking of 6.

The Canbury always serves me and my wife really well. They’re always welcoming and accommodating and have done us some great meals in the past. They also gave us a fantastic anniversary lunch this weekend. The food’s well cooked and the menu’s nice and varied though portions of certain dishes (steak, fish) could be a lot bigger- they’re not the most generous! On the whole though, a great pub.

Firstly order a soda and fresh lime but received a Cider and fresh lime (a first). Once issue raised then received a lime cordial (not fresh lime) and soda which I drank because I’d already lost all faith in the competence of our waitress. Then my wife & I both ordered roasts at £21 & £20 what we received was shocking. Beef that was once pink but had clearly been reheated from a previous day, dry pork belly that was reheated, stale Yorkshire puddings nothing was good or fresh. Don’t offer an expensive roast in a Bank Holiday Monday if the food is not fresh. It was a complete rip off. Our waitress then proceeded to get our desert order wrong and charged us extra on the bill. We checked the bill as there had been so many issues and it was corrected. Overall not the experience that we had hoped from an over £70 meal. Not what we expected from a pub that is rated 4.5 stars on Google and could have potentially been our new local.

Six of us spent a very quiet (perhaps too quiet?) New Year's Eve in the Canbury, but the service, food and price were really impressive. Between us we had smoked salmon, venison, sea bass, steak, four bottles of wine, all served with a smile, and it came in at £50 a head, including service. All things considered, I'm not sure that we could have got a better package than this anywhere I know locally.

We were there for New Year’s Eve, the food was lovely, good service. The only disappointment was that the DJ hadn’t started when we left. We were there last year and enjoyed it.

The roast beef Sunday lunch was disappointing. The two slices of beef were very well done with a lot of fat. Two small roast potatoes and some veg. Not great value for money.

We attended Canbury Arms on Christmas day for the pre-booked 3 course set menu dinner. Fantastic service and atmosphere during the day. The starters and dessert were great and tasty, but the main course could definitely be improved. It was slightly bland and didn't seem fresh.

Really disappointed on my last trip here. Ordered the pan fried plaice; it was virtually inedible. Full of bones and no fish. Paid £21.00 for it, not worth it. If it wasn't Christmas time would have sent it back. Friend of mine ordered the same...

Excellent Christmas meal with friends. Clear communication with the Christmas event organiser. Very easy to book 3 courses plus any add-ons through the computer system they provided me a link to. Service on the day was superb. Great atmosphere in the pub and thoroughly enjoyed...

The Canbury Arms is a lovely place with consistently good food. We went for our Christmas meal though being a Monday it was a little quiet, hence 4 stars for atmosphere. The main course turkey and all trimmings was delicious. I have given 4 stars though as puddings we felt were not up to scratch. Not a great crumble and the tiniest slices of bakewell tart I have ever seen. They weren't especially tasty either. Staff were lovely and we were served by Lily who was very attentive. Overall A lovely evening, cocktails were great.

We booked the private room for a family birthday and it was wonderful. The room was cosy and warm and was beautifully decorated, the food was great and the service was fantastic. There was nothing to complain about. We had a relaxing and lovely afternoon. Will definitely be back. Oh I need toention they had a lovely selection of alcohol free beers and a sparkling. This was very much appreciated!

Food was great and fast. I also asked for a quiet table next to a window as my son is autistic and they accommodated us very well. Thank you for making it possible for my son to celebrate my mums birthday.

The old part of the pub has a Cosy feel with two real fires and a mixture of armchairs and old pine tables & chairs. The main eating area is a conservatory which although more modern, is appealing And well laid out with candles on...

We had our church Christmas lunch on Sunday 26th November 22 in numbers in the private room. From booking with Yovela right through to the day great correspondence and service. Eve the manager was brilliant she went over and beyond to make sure our Christmas lunch was a memorable occasion. The room was decorated beautifully the food was tasty and good portion sizes. We all had a marvellous time and would highly recommend.

We have been to this pub many times over the last 10 years and were extremely disappointed on this occasion. Bar staff were rude, disinterested and service was very slow.

Went in for a roast with the family couple Sundays back. Was served by the manager Alex who was lovely and looked after us all afternoon. Ordered two roast chickens with pigs and blankets and a kids fish and chips. Unfortunately after paying was Informed that they had no pigs and blankets left. Was offered a couple of drinks and something else from the menu with no hastle at all. Food portions could have been bigger but the service was great 👍

Sunday Roast was totally overpriced and not worth the money. Half a carrot, three potatoes and hardly any gravy. Also forgot my side so for a refund. Staff were pleasant though!

Great typical pub, located at a stone throw from Kingston Station in a quiet street. If you are in the area, it is definitely worth a stop for some food and drink.

Sadly we did not stay for food. The cost for meals has increased hugely and the choice isnt tempting any more. It used to be my favorite choice before it changed hands.

Terrible experience. Had to get our drinks from the bar as waitress too busy clearing tables to be bothered to ask. Waited 45 mins for fish and chips and when the food came it was awful. Manager made the excuse that there was a party upstairs. There was hardly any body in the restaurant. Pretty shoddy and poor all round.

Had a family get together for Sunday lunch and this was in walking distance of my daughter’s house. The pub is very nicely decorated and the atmosphere was very inviting. Lunch was delicious as were the puddings. I really hoped they would have apple crumble and their pear crumble was sold out and they had replaced it with apple! I was very happy. Will go again definitely.

We arrived for a family celebration at 12 and were greeted with a smile. Nothing was too much bother, cranberry juice suggested for granddaughters request for watermelon juice. A jug of water for the flowers. Excellent info on what was available and if not now when. Good selection of drinks as well. A lovely lunch at a great place

We were there to celebrate a friend’s birthday in their upstairs dining/function room. The staff did a great job in aiding us setting up the room and in serving the food to the 24 people sitting. They couldn’t have been more helpful and the food and drinks were great. A super place to celebrate!

This is a great pub/restaurant. The staff are on the ball, knowledgable and have just the right approach to the customer. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Mot my first visit and will be back again soon

Reserved a table for a Sunday roast at 2:45pm, ordered, waited 35 minutes for the food to be served which we ended up being so disappointed with. The portions were tiny, potatoes unedible and cost higher than normal for a Sunday roast. On each plate a total of 4 little tiny potatoes which must have been recooked at least 5 times since they started serving Sunday roasts (the skin was incredibly hard to cut and chew), accompanied by half sliced carrot and one broccoli. The meat was good though and tender. I came to this place for lunch before the pandemic and it was divine, so incredibly disappointed after dining there on Sunday, unfortunately I am not recommeding the sunday roast here
