Very basic. Confused about its identity. No contact tracing being carried out, first place we’ve encountered this issue so far. Didn’t have faith in the cleanliness. Things go downhill when you go downstairs. Graffiti everywhere and general feeling of grubbiness. Staff member pleasant enough but will not be returning.

The Cafe is a stylish, welcoming and characterful place to spend an hour, with local artwork on the walls and local produce for sale. The menu is full of gorgeously tasty homemade meals, excellent vegan options and an array of beautiful cakes baked fresh every day and displayed abundantly on the counter. Service is friendly, personal amen quick, and there’s a sunny spot outside to sit and drink coffee and watch the world go by. Children and dogs all welcome. Couldn’t ask for better!! I keep going back.

A lovely vibrant cafe, newly redecorated and with local art on the walls. Reasonably priced and really delicious food and drinks. A great range of cakes homemade on site, with superb vegan and gluten free options. The carrot cake is excellent! And the millionaires shortbread, aptly named ‘billionaires’! They source their ingredients locally where possible, which I really appreciate. Charlie, the owner, is a delight to talk to! The comedy night is brilliant too!

I am sat here at the moment eating one of the least fussy but incredibly tasty burgers I’ve had for a long time. This cafe is great. A real feeling of community and heart - with climate change info around, leaflets for a forthcoming comedy night, a loo complete with marker pen to leave a message, and charming staff. I see lots of complaint about the cost. There is information around about careful sourcing of ingredients and it tells. For those that want to pay 50p less for something tasteless in a place completely lacking in social conscience or any atmosphere, there is a Costa opposite. Personally I think this place is doing a fantastic job. Right, now off so sample their cakes...

What is it with these places, trying to be hip and trendy? The Cafe is failing miserably. Uncomfortable, grubby seating area, dismal toilet down a very steep flight of concrete steps, right next to the kitchen! At our age we should have learned to ask the price of items. The chalkboard on the wall had some items priced, sandwiches were not! We ordered 2 sandwiches & tea for 2. Shop bought bread bog standard fillings. Upon asking for bill £14! No card payments! How do these places get away with such inflated prices? Lesson learned

Central to Brecon is the Café which does the usual soups, sandwiches and snacks. Quite enjoyed my pork pie plough-mans with strong cheddar and Caerphilly too, pickle, salad fresh brown bread and side salad dressing. My wife enjoyed her scrambled eggs too on the same fresh brown bread, but toasted. Café originally half full at 12.40 by 1.15 we were half of the occupants. A good rating would have been given but for two things; the bitter flat white, or was it stale coffee beans[?], and the sole toilet being covered, including the loo seat, with graffiti -very strange and a bit sad.

Needing to eat gluten free in Brecon and and was lucky to find The Cafe, owners took time to discuss the menu with me and prepared the most delicious Swedish meatballs (in a mushroom sauce) I have had. Also had one of Charlie’s special gluten free scones with cranberries, absolutely fantastic. Definitely recommended if coeliac (or if not) and want to eat in Brecon.

Found one or two pretentious and fussy cafes in Brecon which were busy. Here ‘The Cafe’ is not fussy or pretentious. It does a varied menu for lunch but simple. The cakes were delicious as was the ploughman’s. It is a little gem really-the decor is interesting and atmosphere is extremely cosy and friendly. This is in no small part down to the owner who has a great way with people. She was lovely and funny (in a good way) making the whole place feel relaxed. She is a very interesting person too. Ask to read her poetry. I would definitely go there again. Don’t go if you’re looking for fancy and fussy. You go here to eat and drink in relaxing surroundings for a very good price.

Visited here at lunchtime and had the Welsh Cawl which was recommended to us by waitress. It was ok but nothing special. Cafe was quiet. Good location in the centre of town. The place was clean staff were friendly and price was reasonable but think we would have enjoyed something like a sandwich and coffee much more. Staff were pushing a comedy night. Just think the place had a bit of a confusing identity. Would go back and try an evening maybe it is more geared up for that vibe but for a quick snack and drink it was average. Needs to be more cosy for a daytime crowd, probably idea for an evening bar vibe more than a cafe.

Very disappointed with the breakfast here. There was a plateful of toast, two slices of bacon, half a tomato and scrambled eggs. Where was the sausage, fried egg, baked beans, hash brown, mushrooms?? We had decided to have lunch out and were so disappointed and felt we had wasted our money. We can't speak for the other items on the menu which may be very nice but I am afraid, once was enough.

I visit Wales monthly and no visit is complete without a trip to Brecon and lunch or coffee & cake (or one of the delicious scones) Charlie is invariably rushed off her feet but amazingly remembered my name from my previous visit (very impressed). Food is consistently good and specials are varied. I am currently immersed in a book written by Charlie’s partner and which is on sale in the cafe - do buy a copy, it’s a cracking good read. Looking forward to my next visit. If you want coffee and bland muffins there is a Costa round the corner but if you fancy tea or coffee with home made cakes or home cooked lunches served by a quirky ( and sometimes harried) Charlie with her fantastic sense of humour give this Cafe a try - you won’t regret it.

I visited by myself quite apprehensively as I rarely eat alone and I was made to feel so welcome by Charlie. Although she was busy serving other customers she made wonderful conversation with me and was so quirky and interesting. I had a smoked salmon sandwich and a scone which were both lovely and arrived promptly. I overheard her explaining to another customer that most of the cakes she had on display were homemade by herself and the scone that I had was local. Charlie gave me a flyer advertising a comedy night she was hosting and I wish I could’ve attended as the atmosphere there is lovely.

A small modern cafe in the centre of Aberhonddu (Brecon) The welcome was lovely, with smiles all round. We took a seat by a window and an open door and the breeze was welcomed as it was at least 24°. We ordered cold drinks, a pot of tea and a mug of coffee. We also ordered a Ploughman’s. The drinks came immediately and the ploughman’s soon followed, and it was delicious. There was 3 slices of wonderful local bread, a medium piece of cheese (would have preferred more cheese), 3 pieces of small pork pie (really delicious), chutney, pickled onions and side salad. It was also well presented. We both enjoyed or meal, and I would definitely visit again if ever I’m in the area.

The cafe is situated in the centre of town on the High Street. We stopped primarily to get out of the sun and have a sit down. The bright coloured seating in the shade looked inviting however the tables outside were all stained so we decided to go in and have a seat. The first room is the counter and serving area and there are a number of tables at the rear there’s a smaller room and this must be popular with dog lovers as there were a number of water bowls. The lady who served us was quite pleasant and they did have a number of cakes and pastries available. We decided to have toasted tea cake and a pot of tea which came to £8. The cafe is a period building which has been renovated to a minimalist environment with modern art decor. Nothing spectacular but average.

We really liked the sound of the Ploughman’s lunch so thought we would pop in for bite to eat, support local produce etc or as we thought......not the local ALDI!! The wine on the shelf had ALDI written all over it! This had us worried! We shop regularly in ALDI so could even tell that the burgers, rolls, baguettes, ham etc was from ALDI we hoped the cheese was Welsh Cheddar as described but who knows! The pork pies were good I will say that and not ALDI. So 2 Ploughman’s (if you can call it that!) a baguette, a bacon burger (no extras), 2 teas, apple juice and a CAN of Pepsi for the grand total of £36!! Yes you heard right £36!

When we walked in we were greeted by air that was acrid with burnt bacon, and no atmosphere. Everyone was sat around like it was a funeral wake. My suspicions were aroused when the table next to us had to cancel part of their order because the kitchen had run out of some food even though part of their order had already been delivered to the table. After we saw dirty dishes piled high on the countertop we decided to cancel our order and leave. Clearly they were having a bad day.

Our order was taken quickly .We noticed a significant amount of washing up was stacked on the counter at the front of the cafe ....There was even more by the time we left...none of it had been cleared. We ordered baguettes and coffees. What arrived was not a baguette but a portion of a french stick, which clearly wasnt fresh that day, with two lettuce leaves a piece if tomato and slice of cucumber .While we were there a family group of french visitors arrived with 2 children in buggies. They were sent away ,politely enough , saying the rear part of the cafe seated 11 and there were 12 of them (2 the toddlers in buggies) ...what an awful impression to give foreign tourists rather then moving the lightweight furniture around a bit to accommodate them. Not somewhere we will go again or recommend

Visited for a quick lunch recently and first impressions were that it was a nice little cafe with home made food, the cakes looked delicious!! Unfortunately after nearly 15 minutes at our table (we over heard another party being told to take a seat and they would be served) no one had even acknowledged us. I'd love to find an excuse for this but we were sitting right in front of the counter, the closest table to the lady running the cafe!! After some time she said she would be right with us, then another 5-10 minutes passed and then finally we were able to place our order. Frankly had it not been for another member of my family I would have already left by then. We ordered 3 sandwiches and a scone (there were 4 of us). What then arrived was just the 3 sandwiches. We enquired about the scone which she confessed to have forgotten and by the time it came the sandwiches were finished so one of us ate on our own. The sandwiches were freshly made and ok overall. The scone was dry, the jam was basic hartleys jam which I don't mind but surely Brecon has someone who could supply a decent homemade jam, the cream had been whipped and left out so was warm, runny and watery and to be honest pretty disgusting. We had 4 hot drinks, the coffee was good, the tea good in taste but in those dreaded service station metal tea pots that leak without fail!! The lady running the cafe worked extremely hard the whole time we were there as did the lady making the sandwiches but they are clearly busy enough to warrant another pair of hands. It's not normal to wait 30 minutes to be served in a cafe, anyone popping in during a lunch hour would never be fed in time and frankly it's just a bit rude to not even say hello to people when they arrive. You might think this a little harsh but the cafe is very small and the lady walked passed us multiple times...it was almost as though she didn't want to say hello in case we asked to order and so she just ignored us instead!! I'd also add, the cafe was only two thirds full at the time! Very odd behaviour for what's clearly a little private cafe. Anyway as I said at the beginning...they had lovely looking homemade cakes on show, only due to the mammoth time to get served our sandwiches we couldn't bear the thought of waiting for cake so we will never know if they were as tasty as they looked which is a real shame! There is a costa coffee right around the corner from here and I'd always prefer to give my money to a cafe like this over a chain like that but when the food is average, service terrible and prices about the same it's difficult to keep up my moral reasons for wanting to recommend this cafe I'm afraid.

The menu and cakes all looked good on first impression, however we had a very long wait for our order to be taken . My partner attempted to order at the counter, to be told the order would be taken at the table. There was a very long wait for this to happen! When it arrived the coffee and tea cakes were nice the Chelsea bun a little dry. The real issue came when we came to pay. My partner only had a £50 note or a card . The owner refused to take the note saying she could not check if it was a fake.Fair enough but surely a sign up indicating this and the fact that cards are not accepted would not be too much trouble. This cafe is excellent! The service was amazing and speedy, the food delicious and the waitresses very nice! I advise you not to listen to the bad comments as they are highly over exaggerated and rude. This cafe is by far one of the best in Brecon, if not Powys, if not WALES! I dont normally use trip advisor but the service was so good and the food so scrumptios that i couldnt bear not writing a great rewiew. The manager feels passionately about her job, making the best experience for her costomers (eventhough some rewiews have not displayed this). The staff are wonderful, of all ages.I go to this cafe practically every day and have never been disapointed! OK, there might have been 1 or 2 eggshells along the way, but its just proving that its all home made, ITS NOT GOING TO KILL YOU! In fact, i was there on the day of the "Dont go here, go to costa!"mishap and this person who wrote the comment was clearly over exaggerating. In my point of view this person was in a bad mood or something because my fiance ALSO had the lemon mirange and she said it was delicious! I had the coffee and it was very nice! Not at all how the moody person who wrote the over exaggerated review stated as "dirty dish water" WHAT?! We also ordered a ham and cheese toastie wich did take some time to come but i overlooked this as the cafe was extreemly busy. The waitresses dealed with this lady very well until the lady made a right state, practically pulling her hair out , when the waitress went down the steps to get her manager. About a minute later, the manager came and dealt with the lady. The lady rudley demanded a refund and asked how people work in "this horrible enviroment" wich is beyond rude. Then she said that the coffee that she drank was terrible. The manager got out some of her coffee grains and showed them to the angry costumer. Then she said,"do these look terrible? Tell you what, go to COSTA and ask them to show you THEIR coffee grains, you will see that these are much better, now if you will excuse me i have some work to do" then she walked down the stairs leaving the costomer fuming and people cheering!SO ... my conclusion is that this cafe can get very busy but the food is excellent, dont listen to the bad reviews, they are over exaggerated and rude. Come to this cafe, you wont regret it.I am now looking down in the corner of this box, i have used 2381 charachters, NONE of which are over exaggerated, rude, untrue, or argumentative. I have written this review whole heartedly, soooooooo.....COME TO THE CAFE!!!!

Waitress simply wasn't interested and didn't engage. She wrote down our order, but forgot to bring 2 of the items ordered, an orange juice and a hot chocolate. Both were written on her list.Conversely, one of the breakfasts brought was something we hadn't ordered. With all these mix ups, there was no apology. Never did see my orange juice.Had to order ketchup 3 times for our family because each bottle was empty.Couldn't pay the £49 bill by card, because there's no card machine. Would have been handy to know that before we sat down.Had to find a cash point.Don't bother!

I was enjoying a lovely fresh coffee with my husband which had arrived in a reasonable time, the cafe did seem to be very busy before hand due to the dishes on the counter! When a customer made a complaint the one waitress was very calm and collected even though the woman was very rude. As the complaining customer made more of a scene the waitress went downstairs to get her manager, the other two waitress stayed and continued washing up and seeing to others customers. When the manager arrived, she was very offended by the comments and could've dealt with the matter calmly. The customer was very rude and insulted the waitresses which was unnecessary. All three waitresses apologized to all customers and resumed with the clearing up. Apart from this, our experience at the cafe was very lovely.

The title of my review is something I Never thought id say, however our visit to The Cafe was a disaster. We chose this cafe as it is positioned well in the centre of Brecon. On arrival I approached the counter where three young waitresses stood chatting & more interest in there iPhones than the fact they had two customers I front of them and a mountain (this is not an exaggeration, there was a mountain of dirty cups, plates and half eaten food) I imagined they'd had a busy lunchtime so over looked this.Ordered two Americarnos(milk on the side) , lemon meringue pie & a slice of chocolate cake. (£10.40) the cakes arrived after around 15minutes of waiting, the coffees which the ' slow 'waitress described as. Filter coffee.......arrived 5 minutes later without milk. It was like dirty dish water, I almost did a quick dash to costa for a takeaway just to have a proper coffee. The lemon meringue had shell in it & had a curdled texture to it. The chocolate cake was strangely cut from a half of what had been on display. Both our plates, cups, saucers were chipped and grubby. I felt I needed to quietly complaint, however as. I explained our disappointment. Expecting at thevery least a replacement and perhaps an apology...I was bombarded by the ageing Owner with her insistence that this is what I paid for. I was told to go to Costa which we did... No refund no replacement..All I can say is what a real shame that this Cafe can not hold on to customers. A big shame that the big coffee chains will take your business as you can not achieve a decent standard. Someone open a new cafe in Brecon please........

Good home cooked local produce with some interesting dishes. A great place for a light lunch or cream tea with good service and a tasty selection - home made soup, great sandwiches, jacket potatoes, interesting salads and frittata. Well worth a visit - and judging by the number of local ladies meeting there - a popular spot.

Visited Mon.29 June 2015. My wife wanted Filter coffee with cream - No cream available, What no cream in a cafe? Service was slow because only one person serving, and all tables in use. I had latte, good quality. Cheese cake nice though. One toilet for all, down a flight of curved STONE steps with a rope screwed to the wall left hand side going down. not suitable for old or disabled persons. Quite expensive, and the Olde World charm of the toilet in the dungeon left a little to be desired. Been there once, won't go again.

Stopped for lunch today and both sandwiches we ordered were really stunning. Good coffee and cup of tea so was happy with the decision to stop there.

Bought a black coffee and toasted teacake.... only got served three quarters of my teacake. It was toasted, cut in half and then cut in half again... only three pieces served up on my plate... it wasn't cut awkwardly or missed shaped... it was evident that a big 1/4 wedge of my beautiful teacake was missing. In hindsight I should have complained... but in true British style... I paid up and walked out never to return again on the strength of paying for a full teacake but missing a quarter.Coffee was spot on.

Кафешка с полудюжиной столиков в центре Брекона, где можно перекусить тостом или кусочком торта с чаем/кофе. Цены не самые маленькие для провинциального городка. Приветливый персонал.

Stopped for a quick lunch today. The sandwiches were fresh, tasty and made to order. The menu was simple, but what they do, they do very well. Love Brecon and will definitely pop in here again for a pot of English Breakfast tea and a BLT :) (the bacon is to die for!)

Four of us popped in for hearty sandwiches served also as baguettes. Prompt service and reasonably priced, though the cakes were a little pricey in comparison to their competitors, Coriad cupcakes across the road! Servings of scrambled egg & bacon with copious amounts of toast for other customers looked very tasty.Beware no payment cards taken; cash only.

Always an issue when the server is wrapped up in an overcoat, ignoring the cold, asked for lightly scrambled eggs since apparently poached was too much of a technical stretch for them. Well the toast was OK but how difficult is it to scramble an egg? dry, hard and completely devoid of seasoning made it totally inedable. And the cold server - Cold

Unfortunately rather an unpleasant experience. Initially waited for quite a while to put in our order which is of course understandable when the place is busy. No toasted teacakes and run out of scones. A little unfortunate but hardly the crime of the century. My wife ordered the apple and almond cake. All was well until about half way through when it transpired that the cake had egg shell in. Again, we are reasonable people, these things happen. Sadly this was the point when it all got a bit unpleasant. I brought the cake up to the counter and politely explained that the cake had egg shell in. She took one look at the assembled pieces of shell on the outer aspect of the plate and said, "It's a tiny bit of egg shell. These things are homemade. It'll do you no harm." I calmly explained that my wife had crunched through some of the shell and didn't really want the remainder. At this stage the lady at the counter snatched the plate from me and poured the contents into the bin repeating "Fine.". Her frustration then appeared to be taken out on neighbouring crockery in a somewhat alarming manner. At the same time she repeated to the member of staff that we had returned the cake due to a 'tiny piece of egg shell' all the while shaking her head vociferously. I mentioned again that it just wasn't particularly nice to crunch through egg shell. We had a moment of faint agreement when she concurred that other people probably wouldn't want that either but then proceeded to raise her voice whilst insisting that it would do us no harm and that the size of the offending article was so minimal. Given her treatment of the crockery, it seemed prudent to refrain from mentioning the fact that a significant proportion of the egg shell was still somewhere in my wife's mouth and that there was clearly an unknown quantity within the rest of the cake lurking on the counter. Anyway the point is that egg shell in a cake is not a big deal but the way you handle a reasonable complaint is. The lady simply had to say 'Sorry about that, would you like another slice or something different' and the problem is resolved. Instead we were almost shouted at and made to feel most unwelcome. Worse than this was that the lady in question almost appeared to enjoy confrontation. Couldn't possibly recommend this cafe due to this. Under a thin veneer of cordiality I'm afraid this particular staff member was really quite unpleasant.

We stopped here for a second year in a row en route to Tenby for our family holiday. We all had some lovely sandwiches, tea and cake and felt suitably refueled for the rest of our trip. Best BLT sandwich ever! Lemon meringue wasn't too bad either! Would definitely recommend a visit if in Brecon.

Good food, good service. I enjoyed my full welsh and price was reasonable. Coffee a bit weak despite asking for double shot which is where they lose one star. Visited twice and happy both times.

While visiting Brecon we called in quite late in the afternoon. We ordered coffee and asked for a ham and tomato sandwich and a BLT. The bread was really fresh and the ham and bacon were really delicious. Pleasant staff and did not have to wait long to be served. We enjoyed our visit and will call in again when next in the area to try their cakes. Not over pricey.

Had to wait 45mins for a only just lukewarm tuna jacket potatoe and ham baguette one couple actually walked out and were met with verbal abuse from staff. Very overpriced claims to be fully licensed but very poor selection of cheap wine and cans of lager. Would not recommend to anyone staff very unfriendly and we will not go back

A welcome break for tired feet and empty bellies for the whole family. Very friendly people and lovely, fresh homemade food. The owner says she makes all the cakes herself and they are simply amazing! Best cafe in town by far

Nice sandwich, reasonably priced. However will not be going back here as the staff did not take kindly to my 6 month old making even a tiny whimper. We were thrown horrified looks at any noise and made to feel quite uncomfortable. And they don't take cards?!

The coffee was OK and the beef sandwich I had was good if not pricey, but the staff made us feel very unwelcome. We had two babies with us, one of which spent most of the time fast asleep in his pushchair. There was the odd noise - as you would expect with babies, but neither were screaming or crying yet we were glared at, talked about and spoken to quite rudely. They clearly had a problem with us being with two babies and we were made to feel uncomfortable. The cakes did look good but with that kind of attitude we didn't want to stay around to try them.

Friendly greeting in a really nice cafe. Food was excellent - sandwiches and soups at a reasonable price. Sadly I didn't have any room left to try the selection of very homemade looking cakes on the counter. Would definitely go back.

Found this little pink pearl of a cafe in the heart of the town.Super tea and coffee BUT home made cakes to die for.We enjoyed on our first visit beautifully filled baguettes followed by the obligatory, when on a break, cakey. We were not disappointed when we tasted the best Coffee and Walnut Cake EVER ! So much so, we returned for a "sweet lunch" the following day as we felt it was our duty to sample the other offerings before our return home. Again....satisfied grins of delight spread across our faces, and we hope we were good advertisements for the Cafe as we sat bathed in a post cakey glow in the window...having sampled Victoria Sponge,Date and Prune Slice and Chocolate and Orange Cake . All praise to all staff, particularly the Chef.

I regularly pop into this cafe for a coffee and a piece of cake. Staff are always friendly and service is quick. Cakes are fresh and always tasty..... and a portion size big enough to share. The outside seats are a sun trap (on those days when it's not raining!!)

We had lunch here during a quick drive around the Brecon Beacons whilst my husband's passport was being renewed in Newport. My tomato soup was delicious and obviously home-made, and my husband's smoked salmon and scrambled egg, equally so. I then had the most ginormous slice of Victoria sandwich cake full of strawberry jam and cream. The other cakes looked amazing too! The staff were lovely and friendly and I would definitely recommend this place. If we go back to Wales, which I think we shall as it was beautiful, we shall go back for more!

We stayed here for bed and breakfast while enjoying walking in the National Park. Rooms are spacious and clean, if nt a little dated. Friendly service from staff and a fabulous breakfast. A nice chilled atmosphere to the hotel. All reasonably priced, and we look forward to returning again.

We stayed here a few months back and found the place to be excellent again! Last time the breakfast service was poor due to a member of staff, this time the complete opposite ! The pub is amazing and has a nice atmosphere, the restaurant is lovely and the food excellent ! The staff are all really eager to please, the breakfast as I mentioned was excellent with great service ! Room 12 is a challenge for a 6’2 person but comfortable ! The bath should be replaced with a shower cubicle really but can’t fault the place overall and will always come back even if in room 12 :-)
