The Cafe in Exeter

Stayed in Topsham for a week and discovered this cafe towards the end of our stay. We liked it so much we went there 2 days in a row. Portions are generous and service is relatively quick. Loved their smashed avocado on toast. I asked for it with a fried egg and it came with 2.. was extremely full afterwards :) Deceptively spacious as there is a side room and also an outside eating area I think. The only niggle is that on one of our visits we were sat by the kitchen we came out smelling of food! Would be good if the extraction was better.

My wife, my brother and myself are currently holidaying in Devon and this afternoon we had Afternoon Tea at The Cafe in the lovely town of Topsham.- easily found on the High Street. It is a bigger property than it looks from the street and - as such - we were able to find a nice table at the far end of the restaurant. Service was prompt and we soon placed our orders for two Devon Cream Teas (one Savoury and the other with fruit and plain scones). Everything was not only delicious but cost friendly and we would certainly be more than happy to pay a return visit.

As ever, the coffee is excellent, and the wide choice of cakes likewise. Service is prompt and very friendly, and the prices are reasonable for the standard of the fare. I'm not sure if there is anywhere else for coffee and cake in Topsham, as The Cafe is always the place I go.

If you judge a place by its toilets – don’t go! there is only one toilet and the facility is in desperate need of an upgrade. When we arrive today – Sunday – we asked if the scones were made that day and were told that they “probably were’! My scone was quite dry and was small and misshapen – just 3/4 of a scone I feel! Tea was fine and my husband’s coffee was good. One couple left before their food arrived saying that they couldn’t wait any longer for it. Maybe a Sunday management issue?

Great little cafe servicing excellent home made cakes and good coffee and tea. This place is also good for a late breakfast or brunch. It also has a very interesting libnrary of second-hand books which are for sale. Well worth a visit.

There is only one loo in the cafe and is used by both male and female customers. It is tiny. There is no lock on the door to the toilet. Unbelievable! I complained to the manager, she seemed unconcerned and advised there was a lock on the entrance door, this is not where you expect to find the lock. Disgusting.

Went here today , very poor but very expensive. Coffee was cold which I had to send back. we also had two scones that were along way from fresh. The staff are also very poor five members of staff all hanging around the till eating cakes and drinking, when the tables are not clean and people are waiting to order , One member of staff left when we were there and shouted from one end of the cafe to the other bye see you next week , not very professional if you are charging top money, its not much to expect top service top food and hot drinks is it ?

Visited mid morning, v busy, friendly staff, excellent coffee, good cakes and huge and tasty tea cake, Would revisit.

We had lunch here on a short visit to the area. The staff were friendly and welcoming and there was a nice atmosphere in the cafe. Our food and drinks were soon served and all were delicious! We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend this cafe.

Popped in with my family and some friends for coffee and cake. The place was so busy there was a queue for seating so we opted to get takeaway and walk down to the river with it. Staff were not very attentive to new customers but in their defence they seemed to be serving the seated customers well. We ordered a selection of cakes and drinks and received a variety of quality. Stand out favourite was the coffee and walnut brownie. That was absolutely delicious. The carrot cake, chocolate cake and coffees were all fairly good. The chocolate chip milkshake was a massive let down though. It cost £3.50 I think and it was just a Nesquik milkshake, that’s what it tasted like. Overall it wasn’t bad enough that I’d never go back but certainly wasn’t good enough for me to go out of my way to.

Friendly and affordable. The staff were very accommodating and food was lovely. Would definitely visit again.

The person who "greeted" us yesterday was offhand and unfriendly. We then waited ages to be served although there seemed to be plenty of staff not doing anything. We ordered coffee and cake but they forgot the cake until we reminded them. The toilet was horrible- only one and it seemed rather dilapidated. We will never go there again.

Called in for a light lunch whilst visiting Topsham. Lovely service and great food. Well worth a visit and recommended.

This is a blink and you may miss it place as it does not stand out as an eatery from the street. Inside it is decked almost like a loft apartment. Only the inside floor area is accessible though and therefore people with mobility issues may not be able to access the courtyard area. The choice of food is good but not huge. Prices are in line with expectations of the area and the quality of the food is very good. It is not table service, so order at the till but strangely pay when you leave. Competent staff.

I love this cafe but today it was busy and I ended up in the back room. The food was as good as always but the back room was hot and smelled really strongly of hot oil - hence 4 stars and not 5.

I forget how long I've been periodically dropping in to the Cafe in Topsham for a Saturday all day breakfast treat - it must be years, yet it never changes . . . always consistently superb, beautifully cooked, tastey and with top quality ingredients. Very covid aware, spaced out tables, cleaned immediately anyone leaves, staff keeping a respectful distance, very friendly and unfailingly attentive. In an uncertain, ever changing world it's lovely to enjoy the security and comfort of such rare places - even if is only just for an hour!

Entramos en The Cafe durante una tarde húmeda en Topsham. Estaba cerca del hotel en el que nos estábamos quedando. Es una cafetería muy agradable y tiene un interior grande que significa que es posible el distanciamiento social. La exhibición de pasteles caseros fue realmente impresionante y hace que elegir sea muy difícil. El personal era muy amable y servicial. Regresaremos más tarde para probar su oferta de almuerzo. Nos encantó la obra de arte y todo el ambiente, lo recomiendo encarecidamente.

Los batidos (vainilla) eran una leche con sabor barata. Cuatro pasteles diferentes, todos sabían raro, no rancios pero no frescos. Nadie de nuestro grupo podía comerlos. era un pedido para llevar y lo tiramos todo. Nunca antes había tenido una experiencia como esta. ¡Evitar!

Topsham es un bonito pueblo para dar un agradable paseo: bonitas tiendas pequeñas que incluyen una librería de segunda mano, una tienda de delicatessen portuguesa y una tienda de vinos. Luego puede caminar hasta el muelle. Paramos en este agradable café para una selección de pasteles, todos estaban muy sabrosos y a buen precio. Este parecía un buen lugar para una selección de picnic, además de tener bastantes mesas adentro y afuera.

Visité para almorzar, a mi esposo le encantó su té de la tarde con bollos calientes y mucha mermelada y crema, tuve una deliciosa papa asada, hay un pequeño patio en la parte de atrás y muchas mesas en el interior, la selección de pasteles y rebanadas tiene algo para todos , también ofrecen comida para llevar.

This cafe always delivers lovely cake and a good cup of coffee. The atmosphere is friendly and staff helpful. The food I'd never disappointing. A lovely place to go with a friend if you visit this lovely little town.

And great snacks, good service and comfortable - what more could you need. Interesting internal space with outside if the weather suits.

No puedo recordar los detalles de lo que comimos como era en abril; La revisión está bastante atrasada, ¡pero solo quería grabar lo bueno que era! My daughter would walk over hot coals to get to the Apple Crumble cake. The cafe itself is really comfortable and you never feel rushed. You can sit on big squashy sofas, or at tables. Or grab what you want to go.

Lots of lovely home cooking. High ceilinged airy room, plus little garden area at the back. I prefer these two areas to the side room but everyone's their favourite place! There are a couple of squishy sofas. The cake selection is exceptional. There is a specials board, always home made soup and a frittata or savoury tart/quiche. plus jackets, toasted sandwiches etc. My favourites are the baked goats cheese salad with crusty baguette and I can recommend the avocado bacon and brie jacket potato! The staff are very friendly. The tables are always wiped clean. I really enjoy popping in for lunch

The service was good, the decor is white painted brick with exposed wood, very relaxed atmosphere, we had 1 scone each with enough cream and jam for 2, full cream tea £5.50 ( 2 scones ) good value note they do not accept cards. Topsham is a nice place to look around

Called here for breakfast, on our visit to the town. Good first choice, friendly, good food , reasonably priced and doc friendly which is an added bonus.

Hooray, back on form. We called in for a light evening meal, and ordered some delightful paprika’d popcorn and sunblushed tomato nibbles to start. I wasn’t particularly hungry so I decided on just a warm Camembert starter with bread, and my companion chose local sausages with chips. I was only expecting a small wedge of cheese, but it came in its own round container along with four chunky slices of bread and a little pot of onion marmalade and was delicious - a complete meal. I’m told the sausages were also excellent. Glad to give a good report again.

Only dropped in for coffee but we were tempted to try the delicious home made cakes - just like my Mum used to bake. Pleasant friendly cafe which doubles up as a second hand book shop - ideal combination in my view!

We have been coming here for years and in all that time have never been let down with the coffee. Scones and cakes too are above the usual fare in coffee shops.

We had breakfast here two days running whilst staying in Topsham. It was excellent on both occasions. No wonder it is busy, the atmosphere, staff and food was wonderful.

Tuve un plato de sopa y pan de ajo, la sopa caliente era casera y mi marido tenía un tocino queso y champiñones baguette - muy abundante y agradable. La decoración de la cafetería es muy agradable, el personal es eficiente, pero muy Stern - ni sonrisas a los clientes en general, la acogida de palabra está por encima de la puerta, pero no te da bienvenida cuando entras, simplemente grita en tomar un asiento y llegaremos a usted! El estar alrededor del hasta riendo, bromeando entre sí pero tan pronto como regresen a los clientes que se van - cómo extraño, así que no le dimos propina de nosotros hoy señoras - y estamos bien basculadores! Su pérdida.

El servicio en este establecimiento es chocante teniendo en cuenta el número de empleados en los locales. La chaqueta patatas pedí fue duro, y no había ninguna disculpa. Me preguntó si quería algo más. Tal vez cocinar el papa adecuadamente habría sido agradable. sobrevalorado y demasiado caro!

Frecuentemente entrad en la cafetería ya que puede estar seguro de un sabroso, bien comida preparada o una merienda. Además su excelente selección de pasteles son una delicia. El desayuno caliente es una de las preferidas. Excelente relación calidad-precio, un plato completo incluyendo gran salchichas interminable y té o café. Ambiente agradable y atento personal. Un lugar favorito de los habitantes de la zona.

Good choice of menu, rustic feel in a light and airy room. Small sheltered courtyard. Very good service and no rush. Daily papers available to read. Situated next to a bookshop.

We go to this cafe on a regular basis and have been doing it for more than five years. Nice sandwiches and salads. Lovely cakes. Only downside is that there's only one toilet and being with small children it's difficult to make them wait when it's busy.

Full English Breakfast is grilled, healthy and amazing! Also love most of the other dishes which I will continue to work my way through!!
