Passage House Inn in Exeter

Love this pub - we are locals and come here relatively often for drinks. Great location and the staff are great. Went for dinner on a Friday afternoon at 5pm. Pub quite busy but not overly. We were sat in the bottom room which seemed set up for food but there was a table of workmen next to us who had clearly just knocked off and were VERY excited for the weekend f-ing and blinding and getting more and more rowdy - it became a bit too much. Maybe separate the diners from the drinkers? Starters - shell-on king prawns - gorgeous but no finger bowl should’ve asked really but thought I’d get some abuse from the workmen for being posh (they commented on every plate that came out) - wife’s breaded chicken was somehow slimey?? Mains - sirloin steak ordered medium - was over cooked - wife’s steak pie was nice but the mashed potatoes were sooooo salty I couldn’t feel my teeth after trying them! All veggies and salads were lovely and fresh and service was great. Disappointing food experience but we do love the pub….

Good points first…. Great location, staff were lovely… bad points I think the chef accidentally let the top of the salt cellar drop off, my food had so much salt in it! Especially the mash potato! Going to be so dehydrated tomorrow! We also had a group of workmen next to us , who were only drinking beer in the dining room f..ing and blinding, which ruined our meal. We will return but only for drinks and the view.

We enjoyed lunch and a few pints sat overlooking the estuary. Lovely proper pub 😊

Located right on the riverside in Topsham, has lots of outdoor tables across the road as space is limited inside it seems. Food options were mainly seafood based, low beams and a well themed interior. Didn't have any food so couldn't rate

Beautiful setting on the Exe. Indoors and outdoors seating . Great food and selection of beer. Fast service and very friendly waitresses.

Great selection of real ale otter and jail good wine and great place to sit in the sun by the river. Just been again this morning for a lovely coffee sat I'm the sun overlooking the river.

Topsham is lovely . The pub is right on the river it's generally busy .

Travelled to Topsham and the Passage House Inn for a family lunch. Great food, reasonable beer options a nice atmosphere and views. Thanks to the staff for the wonderful service.

Pre booked an early evening outside table overlooking the River Exe Estuary, which looked stunning in the beautiful summer sun. The pub was crowded with a fabulous atmosphere. We shared a starter of cod cheeks, followed by seafood tagliatelle and moules frites. Despite being so busy, the food came out promptly and was served by very efficient, friendly staff. Everything was delicious and the moules were especially good. Would thoroughly recommend the pub and food!

The venue and surroundings are beautiful, especially on a summers evening. However, for us last night thats where the magic ended! Our table was booked for 6:45npm, we arrived 5mins early,the bar was packed and when we ordered our food we were told it would be about 30mins. not a problem at all as we enjoyed the outside atmosphere, after all its was a special night for my husband and I. The bread & Olives arrived shortly after. The mains took atleast an hour and a half to arrive after chasing them up twice!!!!! Eventually our meals arrived, so by 8:40Pm , although we were pleased to see the food we had some what gone passed it bt then. On leaving i asked to speak with the Manager, who was unapologising and arrogant! He blamed his staff for not clearing the order!! When i said i may write a review, He told me not to threaten him with Trip Adviser. to which i said i wasn't threatening at all....... The rest of the young staff were lovely and felt bad not leaving them a tip, something i would always do as i work in a simular industry. We really got the feeeling that he was resting on the surrounding/venue he has and not at all for the Service he supplied?1?111

Had the most amazing time , Zoe was fantastic and very informative about food and drinks, so we shall be coming tomorrow for lunch . This place is amazing, the view is spectacular.

Had lunch here was really nice nice pub we sat out because it was beatiful weather .

Called in for Monday lunch, busy but space outside overlooking river, huge menu with 6+ specials, we ate monkfish tail tacos and fish finger sandwiches, well presented, v tasty and large portions. Thank you for an excellent lunch. We will revisit for a main meal.

A brilliant riverside pub. Excellent food and fantastic service.

Topsham has a lot of public houses. Ten at my last count. The Passage House is worth a compliment. Situated right by the vast bull rushes beds on the river Exe. Perfect for an evening drink to watch the sunset and murmuration of the roosting starlings.

Great old place nicely decorated with local art on the walls . A lovely lovely spot for a pub, overlooking the estuary with big skies + sunsets. The whole of Topsham has history and character, it's looked after & loved.

Loved this pub! Really great location overlooking the river, I could spend hours just sitting, watching the boats, and drinking! Visited on a Friday evening - it was packed! Great atmosphere and quirky layout. Managed to get a table (there was 4 of us) and ordered some food. Had the fish & chips, very tasty fish, homemade mushy peas, was let down by the chips. They could have been hand cut, not frozen. That was the only negative thing really. Mussels and nachos looked good too! Would definitely go back!

Lovely pub and very polite staff. Food very poor. Cauliflower Tacos were uninspiring cold and cauliflower was hard. Maybe just choose the wrong thing.

A great spot by the river for lunch or drinks It was busy and we had expected a long wait for our lunch…but it came promptly and with cheery service Highlight was the “fishfinger sandwiches” - a large ciabatta roll filled with 2 fillets of fish covered in a fresh beer batter. Superb Definitely recommend

I had a pork roast. The only reason the food didn't get 5* was the potatoes didn't really taste of anything so had to have loads of gravy to eat them and worst of all the Yorkshire pudding was really really really dry. It didn't even absorb any gravy and I had to hack into it. Service was good though as the waiters were attentive. The atmosphere was average pub and you could smell the toilets whilst seated.

Cosy little pub with a good selection of ales. The vegan food offers looked great but it was really busy do didn't get chance to sample. Will go back for a taster session. Great views from the beer garden

The food here is fantastic, I had the fish pie and it was hands down the best I’ve ever had! The staff were so friendly too and we had an amazing view of the estuary whilst we were eating!

The food was pretty bang average, especially for the price. The service was less than avg.

My friend and I visited this inn for dinner twice in little more than a week. On both occasions we experienced excellent service from an attentive and friendly waiter. In addition the meals were excellent; the steak was cooked to perfection as per our requests. The fish and chips were excellent. I would thoroughly recommend coming here for dinner.

Mains arrived 40 mins after order placed. Plates cold, vegetables cold on pie order. Pasta on other order dry ( supposed to be creamy) and variable in temperature. Quality of pasta dish poor. Disappointing , have had bar meals here on my own in the summer and always good ..... What's gone wrong ? Take my partner for first time and it is a disaster !

Tried to book but fully booked 😕 so just went for a drink hoping to get a table. After 10 minutes waiting the lovely helpful ladies got us a table 😋 Was very busy we ordered and food wasn't long,and was very good food to. Definitely recommend you try going . So thankyou again ladies .

A beautiful area, characterful Inn and pleasant staff, unfortunately the sirloin steak was indelibly tough. A word with the waitress elicited the response that it was of course sirloin not fillet. She did offer to swap it over, but we hadn't the time, so she took it away. No adjustment to the bill was made though.

We were staying in Topsham for New Year and, knowing how busy places can get at this time of year, booked a table for the 30th December. Fully expecting to be bounced out of our table after eating, we were delighted to be warmly welcomed and informed that we could stay as long as we liked. Service and food were both excellent, so much so that we booked for tonight, 2nd January, before leaving and had an equally enjoyable evening. Really good food at more than reasonable prices and superb service. An excellent pub in a lovely little town, which we shall look forward to revisiting.

Fabulous lunch , lovely staff that couldn’t have been more attentive and the food delicious , fresh caught fish and the dishes of the day were difficult to choose from . Will definitely return when we are next here. Happy new year to you !

We ate at the Passage House recently for dinner. All good, friendly welcome at the bar, good real ale choices, a very friendly helpful young man looked after us in the restaurant. Food was very good, service excellent, and a nice atmosphere, so we will return for sure when next in Topsham

We were a party of 11 and booked only 24 hours in advance. No problem at all! We needed gluten free options and they provided an excellent selection. The staff were welcoming polite and friendly and the food was great. We all enjoyed it especially the carvery, the pie of the day and the cheesecake. The menu was varied and the location down on the river was lovely, so many birds around including a kingfisher! We thoroughly recommend this restaurant and will become a regular for us whenever we are in the area. Thank you for a great time.

Found this pub by chance whilst down in Devon on holiday, best meal we’ve had all week. Superb freshly cooked food, excellent choice with a good variety. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. Would definitely return if we were in the area again.

We had a great lunch at The Passage House Topsham. The Scotch Egg starter was very tasty, we shared the Sea Food Platter, which was huge, very tasty with the dips/sauces and bread board made it a meal to remember. We hardly touched bread, think we didn't need the starter.

Great place to have a nice lunchtime meal. The food is excellent, good choice of beer and helpful staff. Good value considering how good the quality of the food is. I have been quite a few times, and it's constantly good.

Lovely pub & food Had a funny run in with the landlord, we cycled to the pub, went through some estuary mud & clogged the mudguards with mud. The landlord would not let us use his well placed garden hose, to clean them off, even when when we offered to pay for the water.

This was a lovely lunch. Tempting menu and friendly efficient staff. My fish special was delicious. I’ll definitely return

This is a great pub with friendly staff and service. Unfortunately our lunch was poor for the price. The fish pie was tiny and a bit over cooked. Masses of batter on a small piece of fish. The chips were gorgeous. Ciabatta toastie stingily filled and way overpriced. It’s a shame as Topsham has some great places to eat and we felt let down by our food yesterday.

We were recommended to try here and were so pleased we did. The place of Topsham is a beautiful village a 20 minute drive from Exeter. We sat outside overlooking the estuary and had an excellent lunch. Get there early if u want to sit outside and have a chance to try the mussels !

We came across this place whilst exploring Topsham. We stopped for a drink and decided to come back for dinner. The service was exemplary with super friendly staff and a fabulous, well priced menu. We would highly recommend 👌!

We have had an evening meal here and all 4 of us had something different so we had a good selection of the various food items on offer from the dinner menu. From Curry to fish dishes all the food was excellent and good value for money. We also had the Sunday lunchtime carvery and this was super. The decor in the Inn has been improved after many years of looking tired and dated. So good to see the upgrade. Only minor complaint no moules as a special at present. My wife had the mussels in pasta which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Just had Lunch at the Passage and it was very good Fish pie was superb Fish Finger Sandwich got a thumbs up from my husband .Burger looked very good Nephew was very happy . Service was excellent the lovely girl had only been there two weeks who served us well done sorry should have taken her name. It’s also Dog Friendly.

We had the pleasure of dining at the Passage House Inn at Topsham Devon yesterday evening. We were a party of 8, and we called in at very short notice hoping to find a table to accommodate us. Henry was the first staff member that we met. Not only did he manage to fit us in, but he all the staff went above and beyond to ensure our evening was unforgettable. The food and service was first class. If you are ever in Topsham, the Passage House Inn is definitely worth a visit. Thank you for a lovey evening.

Bit expensive, but very nice on a warm evening

A disappointing visit. Chilli squid starter was way more batter than squid, and only 1 small sea bass fillet for my £22.00 main course, with undercooked potatoes, 3 small asparagus spears, and a bit of salad & tomatoes. Such a disappointing meal and so different from the 7 other times we have enjoyed this pub restaurant so far this year. Hope things change for the better...

Nice location by the river. Pleasant and prompt service. Food pretty pricey though and not a huge selection.

A cosy pub on the riverfront with ample seating outside, which is ideal on a sunny day (uncovered though). Good food with the specials being the highlight for us. A nice place for a drink or a relaxed meal.

Went in at 1615 lady at the bar told us to sit down and it would be table service. 15 minutes later no one has come over and 4/5 team members chatting not doing anything. Not even or a sorry when we walked out. Just everyone staring wandering why we are leaving.

A beautiful hot sunny day when we popped to The Passage for an early dinner. It was packed there due to the weather and great river views. We both had Fish n Chips which were huge and beautifully cooked as always. The staff were busy due to the number of people there, but they were always smiling and cheerful and regularly checked if everything was okay. Couldn’t have a nicer Pub family on our doorstep.

Delicious Ale (Otter) and a very cosy interior. Unfortunately it was raining and we couldn't enjoy the view from the beautiful terrace.

Only had time for a pint was staying in the hotel nice outdoor seating area, can't belive I got the wrong one again, there are two called Passage House about 20 miles apart, the staff were really helpful and the food looked amazing that they were serving outside 🤣

Lovely pub/restaurant with super friendly and welcoming staff. We were given a slightly larger table as an extra friend joined us unexpectedly. The service was exceptional, the Cider was the best & there was so much choice on the menu and specials board which was all excellent. We chose Ham Carbonara & Garlic Bread, it came served beautifully. As we were eating, it became apparent the pasta was also joined by very lightly cooked white onions & loads of them. They were masked by the pasta, so we tried to remove them, we then had half the amount of food but were onion free. Both of us have an intolerance to that amount of Raw onion, (most people would) I’ve eaten all over the world and never heard of Onions in Carbonara, we let the lovely waitress know when she collected the plates but she made no comment. We paid our bill, once home I emailed the owners and let them know, I received an email thanking me for the visit and email but saying sadly it was too late to do anything about this and I should have said we had intolerances beforehand, which we don’t normally have just this amount of onion didn’t go with a creamy carbonara. I would go back but Topsham has many other eating options so I’d rather try others and learn from this.

Lovely place, staff were a delight, food was amazing, good size portions. Atmosphere was great, lovely view made enjoyable by all the lovely ( well behaved ) dogs. Would defiantly recommend

We were very impressed by the welcome, care and attention we recieved in this lovely pub. The food was brilliant. I had the mackerel and it was with a wonderful mojo sauce. Tha service was impeccable. Highly recommended.
