You stated that before I came into your establishment the customers were playing with your pet. Etc. When my wife and I arrived, we stood at the door for about 3 or 4 minutes from 12 mid day, trying to gain access, because the door was locked. The sign said closed. You then saw us and came and unlocked the door. There were no customers until we arrived. It was the lady, who served me with the second lemonade. Also, I look out for pet friendly signs, and avoid those premises like the plague, because I am allergic to pets and become extremely uncomfortable. It’s not a question of dislike, more of survival. If you had had a sign saying dog friendly, then you would not have seen me for dust.

Honestly did not enjoy the food was excited to try due to reviews food was bland quite tasteless false advertising missing items overpriced and drinks were not very good either did not provide everything as specified on menu would avoid can't take critism well either. Items missing no black pudding as advertised toast was not done properly mash tastes and looked microwaved could buy better in lidls poorly cut roast potatoes. Chips overdone got asked whether I wanted as was not included with burger. Bacon was missing from breakfast as well as other items had to ask to get them bought out. Bill was presented on scrap of paper worked out wrong tried to overcharge us should I go on.

I can not believe all the positive reviews. Food is over priced and substandard. All day breakfast with no bacon or black pudding. £750 for a basic burger without chips or salad. The Roast dinners were not worth the price. Service was slow considering there was only 2 other customers. If you want a good Sunday lunch stay clear of this place and go to the Crook Hotel.

The food was good on the past two occasions, and the female staff were efficient and friendly. That said I, I no longer patronise anywhere that have pet pugs patted, petted and given free rein to padding the dining and kitchen areas of any eating establishment, but having sat down and ordered I felt inclined to leave the fat waddling thing to its theomeny. However, prior to the arrival of food, the man who had picked up and fondly fondled the pug, handed me my glass of lemonade. Not only had he not gone through any handwashing process, but he held the glass by the rim, where I would have drunk from. Nil points for hygiene. Needless to say I waited for the genuine trained staff to accommodate a clean glass and drink. I hope they change their habits. Sadly I won’t go back to find out. The sad thing is that he didn’t even know he was hygienically incompetent.

We went for valentines night. Fantastic food - we had the samosas for starters and lamb tagine and mixed grill for main. Great atmosphere, cosy and friendly staff. We definitely going back.

We've just had our second meal here since discovering this lovely little place. A varied menu with a lot of things we hadn't tried before. We had a platter for two and the flavours were fantastic and both left feeling full. Everything tastes home cooked and the the place feels cosy, the family who run it are friendly and attentive. We'll be back again in the near future to try a few more things from the menu.

It’s a lovely little restaurant. Friendly and very different. Definitely a positive addition to Crook. I will definitely come back - so much on the menu to try. Had the beef Durban Curry. Exquisite taste and the sweet potatoes were fantastic. My only slight gripe was that there wasn’t enough beef and a bit too much potato in the dish.

Good food. Friendly and efficient staff. Interesting background music played at a convivial volume. Comfortable surroundings. This is now an off-shoot of Cape-to-Cairo in Shildon.

Dinner at Cape to Cairo in Crook (in the old Butcher's Tap). Cosy and inviting on a cold January night. Food was lovely - dhal and samosa for starters, fresh, homemade, delicious. Peri peri chicken and chicken with peanut, lime and spices with jollof rice and pit beans for main course - tender chicken, nicely spiced, altogether tasty. Bill was very reasonable including drinks, staff were friendly and welcoming but not intrusive. A grand evening - lovely to have such a great place in Crook.

Absolutely disgusting place, my wife and I called in here on Friday night to find only four customers in the bar, they were all very drunk or high on drugs, swearing breaking wind and shouting at the tops of their voices, the woman behind the bar presumably the licencee continued to serve them with double vodkas and lemonade despite them being very drunk and obnoxious, we left without finishing our drinks we were so disgusted by the lack of management, and we won't be going back and would advise others not to bother.

We were really looking forward to the Christmas fayre at the Butchers Tap. I became a follower in Facebook thru lockdown and have always admired the food. Staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. Food unfortunately was not unpleasant but also nothing special. Garlic mushrooms were bordering on cold. Main course was nothing special, turkey roulade was just some ends of turkey with a bit of stuffing. Roasts and veg again barely warm and certainly nothing special. Cheeseboard however was delicious and lovely staff got some ice cream especially for one of our little girls! I hate giving less favourable reviews but unfortunately we were all disappointed. Next time will try the tapas.

I ordered a gluten free platter from The Butchers Tap for a party. There was a good assortment of fillings in the wraps. Really pleased with it. I have had the cheese boards from them before and they are excellent.
