We had a wonderful family reunion at the Bulls Head last Saturday lunchtime. We were given a very warm welcome by landlady Chloe and her staff My hummus starter was amazing Our 12 mains all arrived together piping hot and were totally delicious. I can’t recommend this pub enough. A relaxing atmosphere, great menu, attentive staff, brilliant chef, definitely 5 stars all the way Thankyou Chloe and Matt for making our day special, we will be back

The Bull’s Head, Wilson, Derbyshire, is a lovely, traditional ( mind your head! ) English village pub close to Donington Park and East Midlands Airport. The menu is not extensive ( and changes depending on the availability of local produce ) but it is varied and interesting, and the food is freshly cooked, the portions are very generous and it tastes delicious! ( excellent home made pies and fish dishes usually available, plus vegetarian options ). Good service and nice table layout too. Matthew, Chloe and their team provide a very warm welcome with a selection of wines and local ales to accompany your food. Melbourne Hall, Calke Abbey and Beedon on the Hill Priory are local attractions worth visiting. I’ve now eaten here 5 times and always had a good experience. Do book in advance for dinner. Highly recommended.

MORE AT Google

A lovely, old country pub that retains all it's character with great service and friendly staff. It has a really good selection of drinks and the food menu had enough to choose from, but it's another old country pub that's been ruined by the fad that seems to be sweeping the nation of turning old pubs into 'gastro' pubs. Unfortunately for me, the food doesn't go with the surroundings. If you are going to retain the character of an old local/ farmers pub, then I'd liked to be served wholesome, home cooked style food. It was nice enough, though not for the prices being charged. For starters we had the hummus, which came in a large dish with enough to share between 2, which was very tasty, seemed fresh and moist, but several whole olives had been hidden inside it! Plenty of Mediterranean style bread or pitta to mop it up was needed, but that's not what it came with. 2 small slices of toasted baguette, which even the servers, when placing it in front of us, asked if we wanted more bread. It was definitely needed, but what came out was 3 large slices of focaccia style bread that was soft, warm and tasty, which it should have been served with in the first place. A ploy to get you to buy more bread? I didn't see the bill. So, back to the hummus and the olives. A very strange way to serve olives and hummus. You either had to roll the olives onto the bread and hope you'd put enough hummus with it to make it stick to the bread without rolling off before reaching your mouth, which it did. Or, pick them out with a fork, covered in hummus! Definitely not seen whole olives served like that before, hopefully never again! Nice enough, but if you're going to go gastro and charge gastro prices, do it properly, olives on the side in some garlic oil and some Mediterranean style breads please. I had the steak and ale pie for main, which came as a nice, large, round shortcut pie, served placed on a halved carrot and a bed of green beans. Unfortunately this was then surrounded by a brown watery liquid that had no taste. The whole thing came served with a side mug of homemade chips, which were good and an extra jug of the brown watery tasteless gravy, which I wouldn't recommend. The veg was cooked well, a nice bite to the carrot and beans. The pie was a little disappointing. The short crust pastry was tasty and well cooked and the meat was gorgeous, well cooked, very tender and large chunks, which is what you want in a steak pie, but it was very dry. Hardly any of the meaty, ale gravy you would expect in a steak and ale pie, so there was only the watery, tasteless jug of gravy to add to it to stop the meat and pastry drying your mouth out. I always want a nice, meaty gravy that you can mop up with the pastry and meat, but it just wasn't there. Shame, as it would have been an excellent pie if it hadn't been so dry. My wife had the Mediterranean style roasted cauliflower which came with a dish of cous cous. She only ate half. She just said it was ok but wouldn't have it again. Serving it with a side of what looked like plain cous cous didn't really add anything to it. There was a large group of us and mostly we all enjoyed our meals and had a great evening. But for me, the food wasn't quite good enough for the prices charged and just didn't go with the surroundings. If it had been farmhouse style meals, but gastro style, then maybe that would work? But we all have different tastes and expectations and I'd definitely recommend a visit as it's a lovely, warm welcoming and friendly old country pub, and I love these old pubs, which has a decent menu, but just not for me at those prices.

The menu offered some pub food staples, but this isn't your average pub. There were also meditteranean inspired dishes with delicious flatbreads and houmous. Went to the Bull’s Head on Christmas Eve, which was a Sunday. I’m not normally a fan of Christmas lunches out but, having had superb roasts here before, I thought I’d give it a go and was not disappointed! The roast turkey was not the normal thin sliced affair but a stuffed turkey breast wrapped in bacon and served with all the trimmings; the best that I’ve had out! My partner had the mushroom bread pudding which, despite being a confirmed carnivore, was delightful. Ambience and service was impeccable as ever.

We came for a drink and was really impressed with the beer selection on offer. A really good pint and the pub itself was nicely decorated and the vendors were friendly, a nice independent pub! My only negative would be it was a little cold and more of a bar area is needed as it’s very large tables in the bar, I feel smaller tables would make it feel cosy and warmer. We will 100% be visiting again though and look forward to coming for some food

Went yesterday for Sunday lunch after hearing it was top rated. Whilst the beef and pork and Yorkshire was excellent the roast potatoes were poor, just seemed to have been lightly put into a fryer and the veg portion and gravy was a bit small. The main problem we had was that the pub was freezing cold for our entire visit, very glad I had a jumper on but poor husband ended up hunched up trying to keep warm until food arrived. Staff very quick to bring food and clear plates but never got offered a wine list and they didn't seem to have any knowledge of what the house red was, prices seemed a bit steep for what we had plus the 8% service charge on top.

What a wonderful pub. We came across it by accident but a very happy accident. The owners are a really nice couple who did all they could to make us welcome. The staff are quite young but very mature in their customer service and so very polite and helpful. We ate in the evening and had very nice food. A huge piece of fish and an enormous burger. The only complaint, for us, was that the burger came on a board not on a plate but I know not everyone is in the 'bring back the plate' campaign. I'd say the prices are mid-range; not cheap but not so expensive that food or drink is prohibitive. We parked our motor home in the pub car park for two nights. This was for free but, of course, it is only polite to, at least, buy a couple of drinks. I managed to leave my handbag in the pub overnight! I telephoned in the morning and it turned out the lady cleaner found my bag and handed in to the kitchen staff where I then collected. Everything was still in the bag as I left it and I think this probably says it all about the pub, managers, staff, etc. They are just so nice, professional, kind and honest!

I was looking for a venue for a family lunch and I remembered the Bull’s Head as a good food pub from another era. So I checked the website, it is still in business and it ticked all the boxes. People coming from Bristol and Leeds so easy access from the motorway – tick. Due to some mobility issues needed to be 30 mins or less from Nottingham – tick. Good reviews for Sunday Lunch – tick. The whole experience could not have been better. We were eight adults and four youngsters and the menu suited everyone. The roasts of chicken, pork, beef or a combination were really enjoyed by the majority. The meat was so good, really nice Yorkshire puds and roast potatoes with a generous bowl of veg to share. Ditto the beef ‘mini main’ (another tick because one of the adults in the party is poorly and prefers small meals). I had the ‘not Sunday Lunch’ option - Indian style fishcake with green beans and a spicy sauce. That was so good! I’m sure there was some crunchy samphire in the sauce, which really raised the game! Two of the ‘juniors’ chose linguine with tomato sauce and garlic bread. They loved it and ate it all, so that was a lot less messy than expected! Actually every plate went back with no leftovers! We had deserts, which everyone enjoyed. I think my orange sorbet was exceptionally good – so l did have to share it with my partner. As we left the next wave were arriving for later lunch. I think it’s popularity is well justified. Summary: The staff are great, friendly, efficient and not flustered by a busy Sunday lunchtime. The service is excellent and we all spent a very relaxed couple of hours enjoying food, company and laughter in a great place. Best Sunday Lunch ever? That’s what the WhatsApp feedback from the family is saying.

Genuinely lovely food, albeit expensive - unfortunately we went on Mother's Day (appreciate it was very busy), but as soon as we sat down we were told that we needed to be finished by a certain time and reminded of this throughout our meal. This completely ruined our experience and we were rushed and treated as a real inconvenience even though we had 2 courses and were not slow in eating our meals. Had to question the integrity of the establishment to make money and their ability to schedule - as opposed to ensuring a positive dining and celebration experience. They also hit us with 2 lots of cover charges - whatever that was supposed to be - so check your bill carefully as there were a few diners around us with incorrect bills and stealth charges.

Came in for food the other week and was served by 2 waitresses (Jess and Lucy are their respective names). They were both very attentive and their attitude during work is the best I’ve seen for a while so kudos to them!! #starworkers #happycustomer
